Now you'll experience what vapor lock means by doing this. My old Timemaster leaked fuel each time with the old version. Toro put that in for a reason.
Thank you, literally just bought a timemaster and have not even put fuel into it, and I'm going to pull that foam thing out. Glad to hear someone else did and it caused no issues.
I have had the newest Toro TM with the 223cc now for 4 years. At the start of this mowing season I started experiencing engine problems, the engine started surging when the blades were not engaged, and it would cut off about every fifteen minutes. I changed the spark plug, fuel filter, and just the other day the gas cap thinking maybe it was not venting properly. Today hoping that I finally solved the issue, the mower again cut out at the 10-15 minute mark with no fuel in the fuel filter, so I knew the issue was fuel tank related. So with no other way to inspect the inside of the gas tank I finally pulled the blue foam out, and behold I was able to finish the remainder of my yard with any further problems. After I finished mowing I ran the remainder of the fuel from the fuel tank so I could properly inspect the inside. I did find quite a bit of debris that could have been settling on the dome screen on the inside of the tank, so I cleaned that out. I know that Briggs and Stratton put the blue foam in the tank to keep it from sloshing around while mowing and this is in part to an improperly sized O ring that they place on these gas caps. I would highly recommend that anyone that owns this this mower remove the foam but you must to put a slightly larger O ring on the gas cap to prevent leakage. I went to my local Lowes and purchased an assorted O ring set from Danco for about $3 (plumbing section), the largest ring in the set works perfectly.
I am on season 5 with my machine and have had no issues with the exception of the personal pace drive which was covered under warranty. I removed the foam from my tank last year and I dogeza a very small amount of fuel leaking from the cap, but only when the tank is filled to the top. I will use your suggestion of replacing the Oring.
I purchased a toro time master in 2013. I had it 10 years but I used it enough for 20 years of cutting. Mine did not have foam. I'm personal lawn is hilly. I found my motor did start cutting out and dying with the fuel level would get low. I now have a 2024 toro time master with the foam. I've used it for one month. So far it has made a difference.
ended up junking that POS Briggs engine, after 5 yrs it was toast, low compression, took entire thing apart to no avail. Bought a Kohler Command and its so much better, luving it
Yanked it out with forceps because of the same refueling issues you have. Much much better now! Wasn’t Toro that engineered that it was B&S. They also engineered that piss pour fuel cap. Worst cap I’ve ever experienced on a small engine.
You did PERFECT THINGS 👍👍👍👍👍👍✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️I HAVE IN THIS BUSINESS FOR 50 👍👍👍👍I DO NOT UNDERSTAND 😡😡😡😡WHY THEY PUT FOAM or SPONGE 😡😡😡😡😡IT WILL DETERIORATE 😡😡😡😡AFTER A WHILE
Hey thanks for doing this. I always wondered how big the foam was and was surprised it did not take up but a 2 oz space. Your yard would look great with the stripper attatchment on that Toro. I know it makes my yard look awesome.
I mow lawns daily with my Toro Timemaster. The foam does nothing important. The sloshing isn't a problem, and I get more gas in the tank and spill less without the dumb foam.
You may not have a problem now but I have no doubt this thing will begin to leak like Niagara Falls with that foam removed -- Two time Timemaster owner despite this flaw.
dont take the foam out! its a splash guard, fuel will start to leak out the top as the gas caps are faulty after a few years, trust me, I know, I regretted taking the foam out. the problem is with the gas caps, they're terrible. had mine for 4yrs, finally found a replacement tank and a better vented cap that screws down, so much better!
Been running this mower five years. When they increased the engine size they did not increase the tank size. My only nit when I started using this mower was run time and you always ... ALWAYS get lots of overflow when filling. Fuel hits the flat ceiling and boom overflow. Flat ceiling + short neck = overflow. Engineers? HaHaHa The foam is absolute BS. I was fueling way too often till I finally removed the foam. Vapor lock? Folks how many mowers are there with no foam and no vapor lock? You've seen the evidence of what DC bureaucrats do to look smart and in charge. Now use your own common sense.
Water is more hydrophobic than gas, aka water clings to stuff easier than gas. Your displacement test wasn't accurate using water in your measuring cup
Yank it out! I'm not refueling 4 times just to mow my yard when on my old one I could mow the whole yard on 1 tank. No brainer! It serves no real purpose.

I’m still impressed by how well you care for your equipment. Your TimeMaster still looks new.
Took the foam out of mine a long time ago and it has not caused any problems at all. Much easier to see when adding fuel !

I did as soon as i got mine
Foam needs to be in there. Anyone removing it is an absolute goof.
No valad reason why you would make a statement like that... removing the foam causes NO problem at all. @@TheSaw410

Hell no! That most likely would be the absolute last thing causing your problems.

Stripper attachment?..sounds interesting.

I never thought of taking it out. I thought it was there as a filter but seeing all the comments i guess it's not
It's a baffle to keep fuel still in the tank. It serves a purpose. Like ever vehicle on the road has on its fuel pump... let's remove those next! 😂
It’s there because the gas tank is so shallow when people would refuel it would spill out instead of fill the tank quick enough.

Link to replacement?
Agree, I replaced my fuel cap and the replacement may have been worse. The cap would actually vibrate off.
Thanks for that information,appreciate it.

I thought the foam is to help vent the gas fumes? Maybe im wrong!?
So let me ask you something before i buy one so isn't the same size a regular as a 22 inche toro selfporple the gas tank as the toro time4
I have no experience with the 22 inch Toro mower and cannot say which fuel tank it would have.
It's worth it to have a much bigger cutting width.. Just fuel up before each job and you'll be good to go
maybe it can be used for a air filter 🤔

Leave the foam in. No true advantage in removing it.

Yea that 2 oz of gas really makes a difference eh. LOL
Are you pushmowing an acre or what???..I call bullshit.
223 cc = 14.87 HP
233 cc = 6 HP/ Mower Weighs 135 lbs.
I think 233 cc = nearly 16 hp.
@@briangallant5973 Mower seems underpowered to me. Bogs down easily in wet 6" grass (and clogs up very easily.) A 16 hp would cut it like butter.
