Street photography has become bogged down in its own self imposed rules, too many gatekeepers milking it. Urban drops all those stupid rules and liberates. #notstreetnono
@@Jonahc-u6h I, for one, get tired of this endless hair splitting that may be a hit in the philosophy class at the local community college, but really isn't relevant in the real world. If it's on the street and it is a photograph it IS street photography. One could pull at all sorts of ridiculous threads here. For instance, if it isn't street photography (according to people like you) and it is in a small town well, then, it is neither urban photography nor street photography. And how small does a city get before it is a small town. Now let's spend all day discussing the Sorites Paradox and determine just what removal of a grain of sand stops it from being a pile of sand. Or we could just go out and take more photographs. If a photo is striking does it really matter how people attempt to categorize it?
Labels do matter to many in photography it seems! I've been using the term urban for some time. I focus on form, light and colour...if I can include a person fine, but it's not as important.
Glad you enjoyed it Craig. I like to do different things from time to time and it's nice when people appreciate it. Thank you for watching and commenting
Well done, I did much the same last year while visiting my wife’s family who live in a small village near Grenoble. Up in the morning to wander and take photos. Very satisfying.
Great this time and a real shake up with some interesting topics. All very different Ralph, but for me it as to be the trams. Thank you for that keep up the good work.
Glad you enjoyed it John, I like to do something different to the conventional landscapes sometimes and always enjoy this kind of 'walk around' photography. I intended yo have some video to go with the tram images but didn't press record🤪. Thank you for watching and commenting
I like your use of the phrase Urban Photography. That pretty much sums up what most of my work is. I capture and document the areas in which we live in or use in every life. That could include buildings, streets, signs, or anything related to transportation. I never include people, so for that reason I don't call myself a street photographer. Street photography seem to be more of a city type. While Urban Photography can include everything from big cities to small towns. Good video, I'll have to catch to some of your older ones.
I'm glad you enjoyed it. I also rarely include people so don't consider what I do street photography. I am actually normally a landscape photography but have found myself drawn to some of the urban scenes recently (especially some of the old towns around here) and that is now a part of what I try to do. I hope you enjoy some of my other work. Thank you for watching and commenting
I recently enlarged my photographic genre from street (people in urban situations only) to urban photography. This offers a broader variety of shooting opportunities and is thematically still linked to the human condition of living.

A new first timer here. Agree with your title of Urban Photography. In a recent trip to Europe this summer, Urban Photography was what I strived to shoot. At times the Street Photography was let in if it added interest to my subject.
Awesome video Ralph, street is always fun, tried it a couple of times and heading out tomorrow for another try. Amazing images in this video 3.52 4.26 and 6.07 are my favorites.
Some nice shots there, and yes, it's urban no street, at least for me. I see street photography as having people in, urban landscapes is what I would call your shots.
Nice video Ralph. I really liked the, somewhat abstract, high contrast black and white photos of the buildings, in particular the X-shaped staircases..... The door was cool too. I could smell/feel Spain as you were walking through the streets. My wife and I are planning a trip to the South/Malaga region early next year.

A change is a s good as a rest as they say Ralph, and it was great to see you stretch your creative wings and look for new compositions in and around town. The stand out image for me was the plaza at 8.35. I loved the mood and the edit, as for urban vs street I don't think it matters (but I guess it might to come aficionados out there). Have a great week matey 🙏🙏🙏

Hey Ralph been a while since I caught up with your work. Enjoyed this episode some lovely shots in there. The door trio worked a treat. Keep em coming mate cheers XX
It’s too bad many photographers get caught up in labels, which can set them up for failure. Some feel that ‘street’ is only valid when you capture images of people, in large metropolitan cities, with exotic settings, and the best ones will tell a story. And if that’s all you’re after, cool. However If that criteria isn’t available to you, and you focus on contrast, color and composition, then if a conventional ‘street’ image shows up, good. But the rest may actually be better images, of urban landscape, rural landscape, portrait, etc, or whatever else you want to call it, makes for just a great unlabeled ‘photograph’ that you enjoy. Thanks for raising the conversation!
I'm not too hung up on labels either. I just like to photograph whatever grabs me. Glad you liked the topic. Thank you for watching and commenting George
Categorization is always touchy and maybe a bit silly but photographers love doing it. I think street photography is essentially photographing people in an urban environment. Urban (landscape) photography is when the city architecture, structures and location are the purpose of the photograph. If people are included it is like in landscape photography to give sense of scale and purpose. I personally don't care much about categorizations. I shoot what appeals to me at the time. However, I don't like shooting people so I have almost zero images of people in the 65 years that I have been shooting. So, I'm not big on "street photography" but I love urban photography.
I'm also not that bothered about categorisation but I know some people are plus it gave me a title for the video😀. Thank you for watching and commenting Erich

I beleive if the subject is not the people but the building, structure or even dor it is urban photography, if you are telling the story focusing on the people is definitely street photography, tell me if I'm wrong.
I think that is the generally accepted definition. I actually don't worry too much about labels (except for video titles of course 😀. Thank you for watching and commenting
