Thanks so much!
Lot of serious wisdom in here! Thank you! When I was starting out, I knew I had to play up the neck, but I didn't know anything, so I would just wrestle and wrestle and wrestle until something sounded decent. This was very helpful!
Happy to help!

Right?? Thanks for watching. 😊
Thanks for this! I went back and figured out some simple up the neck breaks for the songs I knew. Was lots of fun and forces you to be creative! And yes, it gets easier to figure some out on the fly!

Jim you are the man! You got me started on the banjo and I love your videos. If you ever perform in the Destin Beach area in Florida could you sign my Deering Rustic Wreath, we don't have to tell Recording King
Maybe one day!
That. 1 2 1 5 roll was one of the hardest for me to learn many moon ago , you’d think it’s simple but to me it wasn’t , I had one of those books “how to play banjo” by Doug Dillard , Doug used that more than any banjo player ever ! Dooley , Doug’s tune , I heard Doug do it on the Bells of St Mary ! As I’m typing this your talking bout the Dillard roll 😂😂 but you’ve gave me MANY ideas while typing this , I can hear what your doing on all these other tunes ! Keep on keeping on Jim ! I’ll see you agin in the future , loved jamming with ya 25 yrs ago or longer ! We’re getting old
I remember when I learned that roll I forgot how to do the reverse roll for Home Sweet Home. 🤣
Know EXACTLY what your saying
I need to hear an example of it. It's not a smooth roll
Thanks for the tips, Jim! As the end of the video was approaching, I was almost sure you would draw Blackberry Blossom out of the hat as another possible example (the version that you taught in your 10-lesson beginners course draws pretty much from these up-the-neck positions)! 😛
Glad you figured that out. 😊
Good video Jim.
Thanks!
Hey Jim. Your videos help me a whole lot for learning new tunes! I was wondering if you might be able to do a bluegrass version tutorial video for either the Dixieland song or Battle Hymn of the Republic? I cant be the only one wanting one! Thanks!
I have been struggling with the X and Y chord shapes. My fingers are just not going to be able to do it. I love this method! Maybe my answer to playing backup. The census is that you have to be able to play the X and Y chord shapes to play backup. I have been just playing the chord shape minus the low D String (Ring finger). Thanks for this Jim, I'm going to start working on it!
Chord shapes are certainly valuable to know and be able to do.
Woo! YEAH! AWESOME VIDEO
Thanks!!
Do you think you could do a lesson on panhandle rag? I really like the way it sounds on the banjo.
Dig it!
Thanks
Thanks for the videos, leaving a comment for the wiener dawg and the algoritme !
Enjoy!!
Can you do a video about how to play "Plastic Jesus" from Cool Hand Luke?
I second this
Hey Jim, I was wondering if you could do a video with some tips on how to do a 3 to 2 pull off with a follow up note on the b string. I've practiced this a lot and can't seem to make it sound right no matter what I do. Or maybe suggest a video that could help me with this. Thanks
G-Lick with a 3-2 Pull-Off - Lesson - Tip

The main thing is a lot of practice.
I’m kind of new to learning the banjo again I started about 15yrs ago and in 2011 I lost interest in it bc of going through a divorce now I been remarried to old high school girl friend for 9 yrs and got back wanting to learn on banjo my problem is keeping the rolls going to sound good as a lot of people I have watched playing the banjo what could I do to make it sound good like it should i have got the it basically down to play cripple creek but it’s like I got hesitation in it bad what could I do to make it sound like it’s suppose to thanks god bless
Jeff cole
Go slow. Make sure everything is there and in the right place before adding speed.
Hi Jim, this is cool! This makes me think like you're doing a harmonized G scale on the first string, but restricting to only harmonizing with G, C, or D outlines. I see Ricky Mier do something similar, only he outlines with the "full set" of triads (G, Am, Bm, C, D, Em, F#o, G). What are some hints about choosing how to harmonize against what the band is doing? Just use the old ear?
I guess you could also modify this excercise by harmonizing with the melody on the second string, moving the harmony string to the first string. I guess then you could use the foggy mountain roll, since it rhythmically emphasizes the second string. Rinse and repeat - maybe now harmonize with the third, second and first, melody on the third string, and now do forward rolls. Am I getting it?
Using your ear, but also looking for notes within the chord that you're playing against.
Yes! You can totally move the melody to the second string and use the FMB or forward roll!
Hey Jim, long time Patreon supporter. Have you ever thought about doing a banjo version of Froggie-Went-A-Courtin I know it is a frailing style song normally but I think it would be cool in Scruggs style. My niece is going to be 3 this year and I would love to play that song for her. I know she would love it but I am not good at old style. Thanks for the videos man. I started playing banjo because of your videos.
Go check out the Mama Don’t Allow video I posted. It’s the same basic melody and chords.
@@JimPankey You're awesome, thanks man
Jim, silly question. I watched all your "find all the major, minor 7th, chords with 3 shapes videos. Is knowing where to find the notes on only the first 2 strings just partial shapes based off of the full shapes from those other videos?
Yes! 😀
@@JimPankey thanks so much. Best banjo channel on the net!!!
Hey Jim, I’m coming from being a long time guitar player and I’m sort of finding it difficult to go from using one pick with the guitar to using multiple fingers. Do you have any advice on how to make this a little smoother?
I’m pretty sure you know the answer. It’s just a matter of practice.
@@JimPankey yea it does seem pretty obvious lol, thanks for the reply!
jim what is the best way to hold a banjo when you are an fat person ?
Guess it depends, but a strap will be essential.
I am a beginner clawhammer player, and this works for that too?
Absolutely
Dillard roll is weird
One word of advice from someone who started learning very late in life.
DO NOT learn with tab. Stay away from tab. It’s a crutch that limits your learning abilities in my opinion.
Tab can be helpful, but too many times beginners struggle to break free...
1215… MIMT…
Go work on that. I mean just stop video right here. lol. Come back later.
😎
Yo Jim! You really helped me get started out, and the rolls I use in my band today are ones I've picked up here. Just upgraded from an Ibanez banjo to a Gold Tone OB-300. I'm back to pickin thru these videos, thanks for the inspiration and all you do!
@redschoolrecords
Thanks. 😊
Thanks!
Oh, thank you so much ☺️
