  • @thecaveofthedead
    @thecaveofthedead 3 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    Fender, it's time to revisit single amp modelling pedals. The tech is there now. I'd buy a Super Reverb pedal with a direct out (if it can take third party IRs). I'm not in the market for these tonemasters since my gigging tube amp is already pretty much the same weight and has great attenuation. But I'd sure go for a backup/alternative rig with a single Fender amp model - Super or '59 Bassman - that I could send straight to the PA and a floor wedge.

    • @droliver
      @droliver 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't that you could fit this into a single pedal form factor right now. Would probably require a pedal amp size box

    • @brandonlesko3126
      @brandonlesko3126 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Original SansAmp pedal or try the Behringer GDI21 clone. I have the pedal version and it is a sweet little unit. Having the DI out might be an option for you.

    • @thecaveofthedead
      @thecaveofthedead 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@droliver It doesn't need an amp if it's going straight into the PA. And I'm guessing the Class D power amp is making up the bulk of the circuitry. I'm pretty sure the tech would fit in a stompbox.

    • @thecaveofthedead
      @thecaveofthedead 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@brandonlesko3126 The old analogue units may sound good in themselves, but they are simply not up to the task of accurately sounding like a particular vintage tube amp and mimicking it's behaviour at different settings.

    • @thecaveofthedead
      @thecaveofthedead 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@wabisabi6802 These are good units, no doubt. But not quite the single vintage amp in a stompbox that you can confidently plug into the PA. The WA has a lot of options, and of course is limited to the usual Deluxe Reverb, Vox, and Marshall - not my fave Fenders like the '59 Bassman and Super Reverb.
      The Revival Drive seems to need some extra bits and bobs to go straight into the PA with a third party IR.
      I think there's still a market for a one amp replacement/backup for a tube amp that's really just a plug-'n-play, set-and-forget replacement for a classic vintage amp.

    Great demo of a great amp. My first amp was a 1964 Super Reverb, and this Tone Master sounds better than the tube version I had. Plus the Tone Master has additional great features. John, I loved your story of your first entire band playing through a Super Reverb. Great review and i'm seriously tempted to buy one. But why didn't Fender take the opportunity to add an FX loop? It's a digital amp, they could add that without any impact to the tone.

    • @jilljill6542
      @jilljill6542 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      An effects loop would require ADC to preamp simulation then DAC to FX loop, then another ADC to power amp simulation then second DAC to the power amp and speaker. Without the loop, it removes the need for split DSP and reduces the ADC-DAC requirement to a single set of conversions.

Nobody in the audience is going to care anyway. I love the power scaling/attenuation, the light weight, and the XLR cab sim out. Makes so much sense for these modern times.

      Exactly me response. They have all the vibe of their tube counterparts and if even not exact they are great in their own way. These amps are only digital for having the technology. That’s it. they woudnt do that or make a princeton tonemaster - those amps are already lightweight plus the blues jr is already at an entry price point for a tube amp. The concept behind the tonemaster is to make their 'heavier' amps lighter and a little cheaper for gigs.

      Exactly, although I’m not exactly sure that they won’t do a Princeton Reverb at some point. However, without a doubt there is no way they will do a Blues Jr version because it would cost more than the tube version.

    Alright so a question for all of you seasoned guitar gigging vets out there who have played through one of these as well as a normal Super: should I just go for this one, or is there really a marked difference in the sound and touch sensitivity (like so many solid state or digital amps out there have a problem with) between a Tonemaster and regular Super? If there is a general consensus among live players that the Tonemaster really doesn't live up to its tube-powered big brother, I will probably just try to get a real Super instead. However, I really do absolutely love the features on this amp, especially the built-in attenuator and light weight, so if this amp actually is the real deal, according to more experienced players than I, I have no issue with buying one to use live. Any advice on this topic, and how to get the most out of Supers in general, is welcome.

      I play my vintage Supers clean. That means 2.5 at home and 3.5 on stage. Dirt comes from pedals and it’s a thing of beauty. The problem is the weight. I’m too old now to lug that thing around. I’ve switched to a Bandmaster Reverb for out of the house. Essentially a Super in head format (different transformer at 4 ohms instead of 2, so really a Pro Reverb with a mid control).
      Other players like it to be breaking up. That means volume at 5 or more which is just… LOUD.
      I haven’t played the new Tonemaster version, but the DR Tonemaster has a solid reputation as capturing the vintage tone well but solving the two big issues: volume and weight. Now, I don’t expect these to be around in 50 years, because repairs won’t be feasible in the long run. But as a far more flexible platform for these classic sounds, these seem very attractive.
      And I’ve always been a fan of the Super over the far more popular Deluxe. Four 10’s is magical.

      @@jeffdixon847 Thanks for the info! I have been playing a 1x12 40w tweed Blues Deluxe Reissue with my band up to this point, and can get away with running it around 5 on the master volume if I'm playing outdoors, which does give some pretty good natural breakup, but I generally run a tube screamer with it to get it to the level I like. It has a drive channel built in as well, but it really doesn't sound very good to my ears and I mainly run it on the clean channel.
      My biggest reason for starting to want a Super to begin with is that I really just don't push enough air with my 1x12 Blues Deluxe, compared to the amps my bandmates use, so the 4x10s on a Super seems like it would be amazing to have. 1x12 speaker, even in a 40w amp, just feels weak up onstage.
      Another question: how does a 4x10 cab sound compared to a 2x12 like on a Twin? Is there really much difference that's noticeable there?
      All in all, my experience with the Blues Deluxe has always kinda been 50/50 liking my tone and not really liking my tone. With that amp, if I drop the volume below 4 or so it just sounds kinda bland and dead to me. No real character to the amp at all unless it's turned way up. I have used a power soak with it before, but it really just boils down to it being a mid-range, decent-sounding amp. Not bad, but also not great to my ears.
      I see so many people lauding the Super as being like a magical tone machine used by so many of my favorite players, so I am just naturally drawn to it. I wish there was some way to be able to try the amp out myself either with my band or at least try running it at band-level volume to see how it really performs in my situation, but that would probably get me kicked out of a Guitar Center real quick if I went in and really cranked one lol, so I just have to rely on videos like this and info like you've given, so thanks again!

      @@STSGuitar16 By comparison, my 1968 Bandmaster Reverb (40w, and modded to black panel specs), came with a closed back 2x12 cab. That thing sounded huge, with a lot of bass. I built an open-back 2x12 with a pair of 1967 Jensens, and it was a lot punchier than the closed back. I now run a 1x15 and it’s pretty amazing - covers a lot of sonic spectrum. Nicely balanced and big sound.
      The 4x10 are kind of their own thing. I have a PRRI with 1x10. And it’s nice, but never as full sounding to my ear as a 1x12 or 2x12. The 4x10 kind of fixes all that. It’s got the bright treble of 10” speakers that can give a really in-your-face sound, but the four speakers together somehow fills out the bass that some find lacking in a single 10”. But still different from a 12”.
      There are some really good comparisons on YT that I recommend you check out.
      When I’m having a lot of fun at home, I set up a Wet-Dry-Wet config with a 1x13 Dr Z Maz Jr for my dry - very straight ahead rock and roll sound. And the Bandmaster Reverb (1x15) and Super Reverb (4x10) as the wet amps. Best of all worlds (unless you want Marshall crunch… but that’s not really my style).
      Again, though, understand first if you want your Fender on the edge of breakup so that a TS will push it over the top. That’s also not my style, so I can keep my volume lower, and they still sound great. If that is your style, you’ll definitely be pushing air through those 4x10’s when the amp hits breakup!!!

    Great demo John! You said in the video that the XLR is for silent operation, so does that mean that the 4 speakers are muted completely? That could be a deal breaker because I had much rather hear the amp speakers than hear the emulated sound through a stage monitor.

      @@Shinerbokable I checked the manuals for the others in the series (this one isn’t up yet online at Fender)…the XLR output will work while you get sound through the speakers OR you can hit the mute switch which will mute the speakers but not the XLR/DI thing. Hence, sounds good for live use on a stage (assuming it’s the same as the others, which would make sense).
