  • Today I'm going over the steps I take to make an ACM sign. I don't like to do them but someone asked for the process and this was a good opportunity to make a sign because someone needed it for their new building.

Yes, there is a cleanup pass available with summa. But acm without lamination shouldn't leave a mess behind. You just need to play with router settings. Try to increase speed or change rotation. Maybe your vacuum is not working properly?

After cutting, run a second pass (its a clean up pass) it cleans A LOT of the mess - we do it on the Zunds and and Kongsberg

I'll give that a try next time... if there is one. I really don't like making the mess.

Hi, can you tell me the name of the company who do the signs in your area. who you would outsource to?

Daron, before you start your cut on the Summa, do you have to some sort of Z height calibration or do you just type in the thickness of the acm?

My summa has what's called an AMS. It measures the bits/blades and sets the height. They suggest you test it when you switch tools, but it's always worked at the default settings with the router.

I have a Canon tm 300. Everyone wants outdoor signs but I can only do banners and such. I want to outsource the signs but the customers act like they don't want me to be the middle man. Do you tell your customers that you are going to outsource it and how do you handle that? BTW you inspired me to open my own print shop!

I typically don't tell people how I make their stuff. I don't hide it but I also don't just tell them.

Call them a 'trade partner' rather than outsourcing. But if if you hide the fact and then you have quality/deadline problem you will get caught in the lie. You will get a better price than they would going direct.... and if the other company was the perfect solution for there problem they wouldn't be in conversation with you in the first place.

Wouldn't you make more if you did the installation too ?

Nope - when you pay sub-contractors to install. Add things like extra insurance costs the cost goes up massively, and if they screw up the install you are back to square one. Sell the sign and let the end user worry about the rest.

@@eddybulich3309 To each their own.. but we install most signs like this we do, and it is worth it (at least over the past 10+ years) 😉

Yes, I could make more money but it would require more time, more tools, and skills that I don't want to aquire. I prefer to do what I do best.

That's fine if you are a sign shop and have scissor lifts and other lifting equipment as well as the workforce. @@Novoworks
