Pastitsio is a comforting Greek lasagna with layers of pasta, a tantalizing cinnamon-spiked meat sauce, and creamy bechamel! In my Egyptian household, this casserole was known by a more literal name: macaroni béchamel. Who's trying it?!
Tonight I used your meat sauce portion of the recipe and basically made a goulash with spinach and feta tortellini and macaroni. It was just a “stuff we had in the house dinner”, and it was SO good. I added some oregano and didn’t have crushed tomatoes so I just used a can of diced and two cans of sauce. Writing it down so I can make it again. And this recipe is still on my list. Thank you!
ahhhhh, you gave me an idea, i cooked a tomato soup yeasertaday from scratch,( not from sauce or paste), plenty of left over. So your petstisio is perfect to use it up 😀🥰🥰🥰🥰
I’ve only used butter for the bechamel, and add a handful of Greek grated hard yellow cheese like Kaseri, Kefalogravgera, or Kefalotyri, if none available, Parmesan is a perfect substitute. Also, more cheese to cover the top for a beautiful golden color.
I made it twice this month. The second time, I made the bechamel with butter instead of Greek olive oil. Both times it come out great. I'd post a picture of it if I could.
Holy cow. I JUST made this from an American cookbook. Then I said to my self and my husband, you know there HAS to be an easier way to do this. I used two pans, 4 little bowls, 3 big bowls, 🤦♀️. So I look, and there you are. I just KNEW my friend’s mother didn’t jump through hoops lol. NEXT time… 🙈. Like I’ve always said, your site is the absolute best.
Printed easily findable like at end of video would be helpful.. I cook but still seeing the amounts of things like say the herbs would be easier.. At a glance to know if I have I hand or need to buy
Meat used for Pastitsio is :: Beef + Pork ... Lamb tastes just too gamey .... andd Greek Pastitsio s Béchamel is patended by #Tselementes, using nutmeg+ eggs,+ Kefalograviera! Wine is an absolute necessity;Mavrodafni is used:Otherwise it's NOT PASTITSIO 🧡
the moment I saw it's penne I know it's wrong 😭😭😭😭😭 I feel this shouldn't be labelled as Greek pastistio as it's misleading. we use the long hollow noodles. it may be more appropriate to refer to it as "your own pastitsio inspired version" of it.

Awesome! Enjoy!
I recently made Cincinnati chili which is eaten over pasta and has its origin in the Balkans. The spices have forever changed how I will make a sauce.

The trick to the béchamel, Greek way, is the addition of nutmeg, + Kefalograviera. Top w Semolina! Wine 4 sauce , should be MAVRODAFNI.
@@annavsmith1I’ve never heard of semolina on top. I just grate cheese on the top. Would it go before or after the cheese?
Love the pot and pan who makes them.
Heading out to the store now!
I love it! Enjoy!

If we don't use the red wine, what's a substitute? Stock, vinegar?
Balsamic vinegar is really good
We called past with bachamel in our country
HELPPPPP. I need a sous chef LMBO😅

Can’t lie; you boiled that meat! YUCK!! You should always brown the meat, no?

It's called bucatini macaroni pasta
You talk crap but don't know the name of the pasta... Come on dude
Do cooking food channels really need to show us how to boil pasta at this point?
Not traditional if the correct pasta isn't used....
My auntie is Greek and she uses penne as well.Of course you can use a different pasta. But my mother always used the original long thick macaroni🎉
