Dundee Pond was drained again in June 2024, 35 years after its last draining. My grandfather often said I might never witness it again in my lifetime; I wish he were here to see it with us

In 1989, my grandfather narrated this video showcasing Dundee Pond in Windham, Maine, devoid of water. This rare view of the pond occurred when the town drained it to perform repairs on the Dundee Pond dam. Dundee Pond, a man-made lake, is created by the Dundee Dam on the Presumpscot River, just downstream of where it exits Sebago Lake and North Gorham Pond.
Dundee Pond is a substantial lake when the dam is operational. However, when the dam is not functioning, the water drains back into the Presumpscot River, revealing its true nature. The Presumpscot River, flowing from Sebago Lake to the Atlantic Ocean, has been altered by multiple human-constructed dams, including the Dundee Pond Dam, which create man-made lakes along its course.
When repairs are necessary, the water from these artificial lakes, such as Dundee Pond, is released back into the Presumpscot River, flowing downstream toward the Atlantic Ocean. Before the construction of the Dundee Pond Dam, farmhouses dotted the landscape along the river where the pond now lies.
Draining Dundee Pond unveils remnants of its past, including old tree stumps from former forests and foundations of houses that once stood there. Human artifacts and debris are also scattered throughout the exposed mud.
The Presumpscot River runs from Sebago Lake to the Atlantic Ocean at Casco Bay. Many people recognize the river where it intersects with Route 295 between Portland and Falmouth, Maine. However, this video was filmed much further inland, near Sebago Lake.
My grandparents' and parents' homes were located on Dundee Pond 20 years ago, and I have vivid memories of playing in the mud when the pond was last drained in 1989, right in our backyard.
