Ohhh how I miss Nippy. This film was such a beautiful experience for her. Whitney was a lonely soul, especially towards the end of her life. She had friends but they were the wrong kind of friends and deep down she knew it. Over the years she always kept in touch with Loretta and Lela, Angela too at times. She would always ask them to come see her and they would plan for the future but it was too late. True. Robin could've handled raising the baby on her own but at the same time, she could've gotten custody of the kid and have Russell's trifling behind pay a whopping $15k in child support.
If you read the book you would be shocked that the same things the women complained about in terms of the black community and dating still rings true 30+ years later. The book is slightly less pick me-ish. They toned down A LOT for this film.
I eventually want to read the book because I figured they mustve excluded alot for this film since they're following the lives of 4 women. Its alot to cram it all in an hour and 45 min.
I appreciate the fact that you spoke out about John’s personality. How he has self-hate issues and how he tried to pass on that attitude and mindset into their children, wanting them to think that “White is better.” That part made me upset the most tbh. Cuz that was just effin’ WRONG 🤬
Yes...cuz some ppl miss that..i.e John having a white mistress...working in a all white firm...living in a upper class probably all white neighborhood and the kids are the only BLK children in their school and neighborhood. That will lead to the daughter feeling like she has to act/date white ..have white friends or well off BLK girlfriends. The son then transform into the white boys "buddy" ...dates their white sister and is only accepted becuz his father has status.. connections and money. It's a domino effect when the father himself feels being black isn't a good thing. Colorism/self hate exist in men too
Wanting what's best for your children and for yourself is NOT having self-hate. If Black Women did this exact same thing, would you be saying the same thing?
@@gracekincade8775 I have seen it countless amounts of times and yet when I ask someone that same question, that's the only thing you all retort back with. It's NOT self-hate to date nor to marry outside of your race because if that's the case, Black Women have a SERIOUS issue on their hands.
I agree... savannah mom felt like as long as she stayed with that man until he left his unhappy marriage she and Savannah would be "well off" not seeing that her and Savannah been well off by themselves but the mother couldnt deal with being "alone"
Yessss, this is a movie for every woman who has fallen for the wrong man and got hurt badly but MATURED and grew from what they went through. That's why this movie will always be a classic. It teaches something.
Right! Savannah’s mom met will because she didn’t want her daughter to end up like her, alone but Kenneth wasn’t shit. Savannah’s didn’t need a man to make her happy and could do bad all by herself.
Nah...her mom is a typical ol skool mother that felt they could only survive by having a man...her mom did mean well...she didn't want savannah to be alone even if she had to be a side chick. Her mom just didn't realize woman can live well and be happy without a TRIFLING half axx man. I'd rather be alone too if I gotta deal with half a man@@DestinysChild-vn5hm
"Collard greens, some cornbread, some candy yams, a little potato salad, fried chicken, peach cobbler, few slices of ham." That's a Sunday meal. If all of that was leftovers, how long did Gloria have all of that food in her refrigerator?" I hope it wasn't leftovers from New Years. Gloria should have threw that out after two days.
The ages of each actress at the time of filming: Angela Bassett (Bernie) 36 Whitney Houston (Savannah) 31 Lela Rochon (Robin) 30 Loretta Devine (Gloria) 45 We know they made Whitney's character, Savannah, older, 33, but I feel that everyone else's ages were what they were in real life because it really fit for their situations/demeanors. It made sense that Gloria had a teenage son. It made sense that Bernie was in an 11-year marriage with pre-pubescent kids. Lastly, it made sense that Robin and Savannah were naive, dating around and childless. If she didn't have her own place, I would have believed Robin was 25 based on the decisions she made. But having a nice place and a dog made her real age of 30 make sense looking back.
This makes sense because Robin seemed to be youngerthan the girls based off her actions. I didnt know Loretta was 45, shes always looked good for her age. I though her and Angela were closer in age.
The writer, Ms. Terry McMillian is a #Libra, thus, I wouldn't be surprised if she weighed all of *that* out whilst typing the book. Libra rules the 7th House, that house governs relationships (among other items), hence why I was addicted to Ms. Terry's prose back then! I know, tmi. lol...
@forthenostalgia In the book, it’s mentioned that Robin and Savannah are both the same age but with Robin being a couple of months younger than Savannah.
Angela Bassett was absolutely STUNNING in “Waiting To Exhale”. Her hair and makeup was on point in every scene. I did like her better with the long hair but she looked just as beautiful with the short hair. That woman is a beauty. 😍😍😍
This movie still hits truth in the year 2024 and omg Angela Bassett deserved an Oscar for the scene she burned up his stuff. Every person who has ever been hurt in love felt her pain. I love this movie.
That "Boy if you don't get..." was hilarious. It describes most of the men in that film with the exception of Wesley Snipes and Gregory Hines characters.
Angela Bassett is, was and always will be my favorite actress. Every movie I see her in, (except Vampire in Brooklyn) she is a single parent, struggling, but always making it in the end. She reminds me of my mom. Angela Bassett is, was and always will be my hero❤❤. I love her line "I'm not worried. You on the other hand should be."😂😂 I use it myself. Michael made me laugh with Robin. Working up a sweat when he didn't even do anything. "Does he think he just did something. I could've had a V8." 😂😂 Such a classic.
I literally quote this movie all the time still to this day. “He’s a good man Savannah.” Also, I think this is one of my absolute favorite movie soundtracks of all time. ✨
I saw that symbolism too with **Robin, and also how she wouldn't be weak for Russell anymore, that THIS was the only way that SHE could be without him bringing her down...what would be different when the baby comes? she makes 10 times more money than what he makes..u can tell by her choice of men that she was the bread winner..so him being gone would do her and the baby a favor, he was never going to leave his wife... **Bernie cutting her hair..11 yrs of healthy thick hair and in a split just like her marriage..was cut. She had to let more than John and his clothes ..property go. **Gloria going from her big main house to the smaller pool house seeing that her lil son is no longer her baby ..he's a grown man ready to come into his grown self. And just cuz his father left her..by tyrik going to Spain does not mean he's leaving her too..but that he's also allowing his mother to just be Gloria again and have someone for herself instead of giving everything for her baby...hoping his father makes the right decision after 17 yrs. **Savannah finally standing up to her mother..and not letting her mom have so much control over her life ..meaning well but being overbearing all the time. I could relate to this movie 🤦🏾♀️❤️🩹👑🌸🎖️
@@toniidanaee7074 Yeah she did. She slept with the married dude from the club. You don't remember her telling Gloria she did it at the race? She said afterwards dude started coming to her house and her son answered the door.
Now that I’m an adult I can relate to Angela Bassett’s character. I build up my ex ( then boyfriend ), loaned him money when he lost his job, and supported him just for him to cheat on me with his “ best friend “ that he told me not to worry about.
Girl tell me about it bought this grown ass man a car and wasted four years of my life trying to get him to love me the right way only for him to cheat then get engaged to his coworker who he told me I was overreacting about
I’ve been with my husband for 11 years but when we first started dating, he would above and beyond for his female “friend”. He told me not to worry too but I knew something was up. Come to find out, she was an ex so I confronted her and told her to move on. Told him to move on too! He hasn’t had any female friends since. I don’t have guy friends. That would never pass with my man lol 😂
Bernie situation is scary. We expect that our husbands will protect and provide especially if we're being so supportive. I always cheer as shes burning his ish! I love this movie, and yesss the soundtrack is IT!!! And that is my favorite song too girl OMG! When I was younger my fathers girlfriend looked like Robin and her name was Robin lol and she could sing we used to sing that song all the time!!! Good memories!!
My mom and sister saw this when it first came out and they said EVERYONE in the theater screamed and cheered when Westley Snipes came on scene. Apparently no one knew he was in the movie till then. Oh the 90s!
Hey! Waiting to Exhale is one of my favorite books, and I have it damn near committed to memory, so I can give you a little more insight. SPOILERS AHEAD! So in the book, Savannah’s character is pretty accurate to how she’s portrayed by Whitney in the film. The only thing that’s left out, is that she has a fling in the book slightly after she’s decided to stop seeing Kenneth, but before she actually tells him. The man who she sleeps with is someone she meets at a conference in Las Vegas, and she quickly falls for him and his vulnerability, only for him to ghost her after it’s over. It’s that situation, plus Kenneth reaching out to her that cause her to end the relationship. That, and in the book, Lionel actually meets her in Denver, and drives with her to Phoenix so that she’s safe. He’s more of a scam artist than portrayed here. They delve a bit more into her family relationships and such, and she does get a promotion in the end, which proves that she did in fact have it in her to make it as a producer. Robin’s character in the book is also somewhat accurate, but her subplots including her shopping addiction, and her parents’ ill health really do make her much more sympathetic. Her father is suffering from end stage Alzheimer’s, and her mom is a breast cancer survivor who has to now care for him full time, and is also not well. Her father’s eventual passing is what makes her finally see that life was too short for her to be waiting around on Russell. Bernie actually does begin to date James in the book, as his wife dies shortly after their encounter. The book touches a lot more on her possible addiction to Xanax, and the mental toll her divorce takes, which leads to depression, and a bad experience with anti depressants. John is outwardly much more of an Oreo than in the movie, and he does marry Kathleen, which also really hurts Bernie. She also gets about $3 mil in her divorce settlement, decides to open her catering company called Bernadine’s Sweet Tooth, and instead of the girls going to the Grand Canyon on NYE, she offers to fly them all to Paris. Gloria’s character probably deviates the most from all the other characters in the source material. They talk A LOT about her weight, as she’s much heavier than what we see on screen, and why she’s gotten so big. They also discuss why her dating life is why it is, because she kept ending up with men who didn’t do right by her, and emotionally ate as a result. She also didn’t want to keep confusing Tarek, so she gained weight and shut herself off so that she could protect them both. Joseph (the male hairstylist that spills the tea on Bernie) has a much bigger role, and Marvin’s portrayal is pretty accurate. The biggest difference, is that she has a heart attack towards the end of the book and almost dies, but Marvin finds her and saves her, and that is what causes them to commit to each other, and Tarek leaves after this happens. Gloria commits to her weight loss, and Marvin reassures her that he still will love her regardless. Obviously the movie would be hella long had they included all of this, but I hope this gives a bit more insight!
@@theorderofthebees7308I have! I’m gonna be honest, I felt Terry’s bitterness throughout the second one. She put the ladies through unnecessary situations, and Robin’s storyline was completely unrealistic. The one that made me most upset was what she did to Bernie’s character, that was a lot for so little pay off.
Savannah's mom had no respect for her daughter not only that she was putting her daughters life in danger by setting her up WITH A MARRIED MAN. What happens if his wife found out? And lets not forget John has lost 1.5 mil to Bernidine does anyone think his lover is going to stick around after she learns about that? There's a book about what happens after this movie sad thing is Beridine got with a guy but he's sucking her dry financially.
Yep, the sequel, Getting To Happy. I listened to the audio book a couple years ago. Amazing how certain lives changed...especially that James dude Bernadine had met. He was a awful lying bastard!!!

It Hurts Like Hell was my favorite from the soundtrack. I listened to that song over and over when I separated from my husband. Aretha's voice is so hauntingly beautiful on that track. She conveyed so much emotion.

I have to say the fashions were iconic as well. I want Bernadine's fit in the garage sale scene! The sundress is sundressin'! My favorite song from the soundtrack was Brandy's Sittin' Up in My Room.
John hated the fact that because of her he made it so big and resented her for that. If there should be a sequel he would be worse off cause I doubt that woman he left her for is gonna further him like she did
@@TheRetroWoman80 I just read about that and I’m not pleased with how things go for the ladies. I was hoping they’d be happier, not sure why a black author would keep creating so much trauma for her characters
@@Sasha-vb3mh I have a theory it's because her own marriage fell apart, and she felt like she had to demolish her characters' joy & progress as a result. She slick predicted her own divorce w/Gloria's arc (which left her very openly bitter), and I guess if Terri doesn't get to have a happy ending, nobody does. Not even non-existent people. 😑
How could you call her baby was my jam. Lmao I loved this review. I didn’t realize how naive robin was. I used to think the heavyset guy was really into her and now I watched it and I can see he was totally selling her a dream. Whew Chile now im in my thirties and this movie hits so different. That song isnt talked about enough for me. Its still one of my faves. I thought he was too but as soon as he asked her whats her fantasy, my inner alarm went off. Some men ask you those type of questions so that they can mold themselves into what you want then after awhile, the mask falls. Thanks for watching and Im glad you enjoy my videos ☺️
It’s possible that Bernadine low-key knew that John and his Barbie doll were messing around, but didn’t think he was actually going to leave her for Kathleen.
Looking at this movie now that I'm older all 4 of them had to see the dirt in their lives to crossover to the light! It was major growth in all their characters

Having a favorite song from that soundtrack is impossible, they ALL are hits! Count on me, Sitting up in my room, Kissing you, and Let it flow are my top 4 from it. Watching this commentary, it’s crazy how the dating scene really hasn’t changed much. It’s actually worse. Anyways thank you for this, can’t wait to watch the next one 😊
My two favorite songs on the soundtrack is Brandy's "Sitting up in my room" and Mary J Blige "Not Gon' Cry." I STILL keep those two on heavy rotation on my playlist.
As an adult I definitely see myself in Robin. I’m def a hopeless romantic like Robin and would sometimes step out of what ik just to see how things would go and always seeing the good in bs men but thank God I always choose myself!
Such a good video. The scene where Michael was trying to put the condom on stuck out to me the last time I watched this movie because it was my 1st time really watching it as an adult. It seems to me that he was only pretending to put it on. If you pay attention, when he tries to get on top of Robin, you see him throw it off the side of the bed. It made me so mad to see it
They were all beautiful ❤️ women ....Loretta Devine has such a beautiful face. When she was younger she was STUNNING ( Dream girls). She should sing more often.
She's so underrated. She was in a movie with LL Cool J, Whoopi Goldberg, Toni Braxton, etc. called Kingdom Come. She was so funny. Jada Pinkett too, they had me dying.😂 She can do comedy, drama, etc. She deserves more recognition for sure.
The song "Count On Me" toward the end of the film touches me to the heart. It reminds me of my late cousin because she would always tell me when I'm down and needed to talk to her, I can always count on her.
In the sequel 15 years laterl: John came back to Bernadine with a pitiful mouth and full of "sorries". The White woman left him for a younger man and abandoned their daughter who took a liking to Bernadine; Savannah started dating and moved in with a White man who wanted to marry her. She kept stalling so he bade her adieu; Gloria married Marvin. Unfortunately, he was killed in a bank robbery. Needless to say she was afraid to move forward with her life. Tariq became a cop and was happily married with two kids; Bernadine if I remember correctly found someone else. Her daughter came home for college break to reveal she was LGBT and was sweet on her classmate. The girl spent Winter break with her and Bernadine. But they broke up; I forgot what happened with Lela Rochon's character. Book: "It's Not All Downhill From Here".
Actually The sequel to waiting exhale is called "Getting to Happy" and Bernadine married Wesley Snipes character and turns out his wife wasn't dying from cancer and he was still alive in another stated he was a bigamist
Well I’m four hours deep into these videos and loving it. Great perspectives and breakdowns. I was a child when I watched these and had no idea what I was really sing.
The soundtrack is a masterpiece! I love and miss this era. Black Cinema Soundtracks, during that time, were GOLD. Every song could relate to the movie. Each song automatically takes you back to a specific scene of said movie.
This video just randomly popped up in my feed. And I'm so grateful. The beginning breakdown on Bernadine's hurt????? I am in tears. That level of hurt and pain is unfathomable.
Not 12-year-old me screeching I'M NOT GON CRY, I'M NOT GONNA SHED NO TEARS at the top of my lungs every time this came on.....11 YEARS, I'VE SACRIFICE!! It hit middle school me too hard 🤣
For John, it was never about specifically hurting her, it was all a business move, and that makes his character a little bit more complex. He stayed ahead of her by putting everything under him while she funded without actual reimbursement. The move to a white wife is more than likely another business move. He probably doesn't even like her either. He's a successful businessman making too large of moves, leading to his downfall.
I disagree, he literally said that it was easy for him and that he was choosing the white woman. If he was thinking with his "business head", he would have kept Bernadine or at least phased her out (and gave her a job to make her own money) which would have also been wrong. John was a dog.
Yeah that's kinda what I thought about John too. Especially when it was known that he had a hold on all of his business matters. The thing about the kids and school I found to be more about getting his kids a good school, it might look good on college applications if they're in a private school (least that's what I thought they were judging by the outfits) despite the issues that might come up with them such as bullying, self hatred and low self esteem.

Even my not-so-great mother would not say crap like that with me or even my sisters if they were dating.
@@johnc.2683 You clearly haven’t paid close attention to the movie.
@@gracekincade8775 I have seen it countless amounts of times and yet when I ask someone that same question, that's the only thing you all retort back with. It's NOT self-hate to date nor to marry outside of your race because if that's the case, Black Women have a SERIOUS issue on their hands.
Favorite line of the whole movie "Get yo shit ! Get yo shit ! And Get Out !!!! " Miss Angela Bassett did that ! 💅🏾❤

Savannah mamma pushed her to be with Kenneth because she wanted to be rescued too.
That's deep. Never ever thought about that.
It was weird.
My mother would have strangled my neck for messing with a married man.
I agree... savannah mom felt like as long as she stayed with that man until he left his unhappy marriage she and Savannah would be "well off" not seeing that her and Savannah been well off by themselves but the mother couldnt deal with being "alone"
Yessss, this is a movie for every woman who has fallen for the wrong man and got hurt badly but MATURED and grew from what they went through. That's why this movie will always be a classic. It teaches something.
I’m glad savannah told her mom like it is because the mama is being too thirsty and mosey for her daughter to be with trifling Kenneth
Yes totally agree 👍
Right! Savannah’s mom met will because she didn’t want her daughter to end up like her, alone but Kenneth wasn’t shit. Savannah’s didn’t need a man to make her happy and could do bad all by herself.
Her mother had self esteem issues
Nah...her mom is a typical ol skool mother that felt they could only survive by having a man...her mom did mean well...she didn't want savannah to be alone even if she had to be a side chick. Her mom just didn't realize woman can live well and be happy without a TRIFLING half axx man. I'd rather be alone too if I gotta deal with half a man@@DestinysChild-vn5hm

I will FOREVER love that white dress Robyn is wearing when she is hanging out with Troy
YES! They dressed the girls in this movie 😍🥰
The ages of each actress at the time of filming:
Angela Bassett (Bernie) 36
Whitney Houston (Savannah) 31
Lela Rochon (Robin) 30
Loretta Devine (Gloria) 45
We know they made Whitney's character, Savannah, older, 33, but I feel that everyone else's ages were what they were in real life because it really fit for their situations/demeanors.
I know, tmi. lol...
I'm almost 36 and yeah as a kid I thought their ages were so old smh. My mom was about 41 when this movie came out.
@forthenostalgia In the book, it’s mentioned that Robin and Savannah are both the same age but with Robin being a couple of months younger than Savannah.
@@SexyButCurious My mother was 20 when the movie came out and was seventeen when the book was released.
Angela Bassett was absolutely STUNNING in “Waiting To Exhale”. Her hair and makeup was on point in every scene. I did like her better with the long hair but she looked just as beautiful with the short hair. That woman is a beauty. 😍😍😍
Not Kenya Moore haircare herself!!🤣🤣
She’s always had pretty hair 💜
Where?
This movie still hits truth in the year 2024 and omg Angela Bassett deserved an Oscar for the scene she burned up his stuff. Every person who has ever been hurt in love felt her pain. I love this movie.
Can we talk about what an amazing actress Whitney was? Goodness
Whitney was BEAUTIFUL!
“He’s a good man Savannah.”
Also, I think this is one of my absolute favorite movie soundtracks of all time. ✨

I think the dolls on Robin's shelf represent how naive she was and her future role as a mother.
She may not want the guy,but the child needs her father.
Yes! I love this comment, great symbolism. Robin was childish yet maternal 🪆
I love foreshadowing.

Now that I’m an adult I can relate to Angela Bassett’s character. I build up my ex ( then boyfriend ), loaned him money when he lost his job, and supported him just for him to cheat on me with his “ best friend “ that he told me not to worry about.
That sucks. People are just...ugh.

Thank you for this!! And thanks for watching 😊
That was an awesome run down of the book! ❤thank you!!
Have you read the sequel , I would curious to know what you think?
@@theorderofthebees7308I have! I’m gonna be honest, I felt Terry’s bitterness throughout the second one. In the sequel 15 years laterl: John came back to Bernadine with a pitiful mouth and full of "sorries". She kept stalling so he bade her adieu; Gloria married Marvin. Unfortunately, he was killed in a bank robbery. Needless to say she was afraid to move forward with her life. Tariq became a cop and was happily married with two kids; Bernadine if I remember correctly found someone else.
