Perry has such an opportunity to get other black writers/directors/creatives off the ground to tell DIFFERENT stories in the black experience. Being reduced to trauma is exhausting at this point.
My god is that so true! He could’ve been the black equivalent of Walt Disney and handled the producer /businessman role, while recruiting new and old talent to tell innovative black stories/films. Now he’s being overshadowed by the likes of Ryan Coogler and Jordan Peele (and many more talented black directors), when in a different timeline, if he had played his cards right, those directors could’ve been making films under HIS production.
He been trying to put them in the fat front. But they constantly want to be equal to him or want to humble him. So he said f it and continue doing his thing
Another thing that really pissed me off about Temptation was the fact that Judith’s first time with Harley was completely nonconsensual. She told him “no” several times and he refused to take it for an answer. I got the sense that she recognized she was attracted to him, but didn’t really plan to act on it, at least not during the plane ride. I think the way she crashed out later was a result of guilt and confusion from the assault.
Right, and it was only when *he* wanted, he stopped and said "Stop it! Stop it! Now you can say you resisted", after you pushed up all on her and got her confused. And even then she didn't give a direct answer.
I had to argue with my Grandma about this. She argued that Harley was right and Judith just wanted to save face/have an excuse. Uh, no. He coerced her into sleeping with him, proved that he won’t take no for an answer, and he is in a position of power over her. That was r*pe.
Literally...but in the play...they stay together and she doesn't get hiv...they pray to basically stay together, and their parents wants them to stay together.
@@MalliPeacethey don’t stay together in the movie she gets hiv and her business and she ends with telling another lady her story to save her marriage and he moves on with a new family owning the pharmacy she gets her medicine from
@@jazuhknee Yes I am aware. The original commenter was giving their take on what Tyler Perry's intention of the film was. Or are we talking about the other comment describing the plot of the play??? My bad, the comments never line up right on my phone lol
I think Kimberly Elise should have at least been Oscar nominated for her performance in diary of a mad Black woman. She was phenomenal to say the least in that performance
Kimberly Elise should be wayyyyy bigger than what she is. I hate that she’s not in more roles bc mama is TALENTED. She portrays e v e r y role like the rent is due.
Brenda did not fold under pressure when Charles was shot. She was a gold digger and wanted to inherit his money. That’s why she drained his bank account and got ghost. Brenda was not his only mistress, she just happened to be the one with the biggest finesse. She was willing to become his baby mother while he’s married. Charles is so arrogant that he doesn’t realize this woman is only after him for his money. She would’ve never looked his way if he wasn’t rich and powerful. I believe that possibly Helen reminded him of his past when he used to be broke. That’s why some older women say not to build with certain men because they will always even if subconsciously associate YOU with struggle. It doesn’t help that Brenda is a racially ambiguous woman who stands in direct contrast with Helen.
Acrimony felt like they were punishing the character for deciding that enough was enough of letting this man use her and now she can't get entirety of the blessings that she helped if not worked for
@@itaflamingodoe863because she was mentally ill like you literally can’t be like oh yay money over someone who wasted so much time of your life like it’s the equivalent of spending 40 years in jail for something you didn’t do but get 10 million after wards like what do you do with that anger? The life that you lost and can never get that time back. Yeah she’s angry that’s the entire point of talking about her borderline personality disorder and he’s literally trash like in the beginning first 10 mins of the movie it talks about how he took advantage of her sadness by sleeping with her after her mothers funeral. Like there is no “she’s right he’s wrong” about this he’s a trash man and that so why type can write lame movies bc mfs literally go “yeah woman wrong” like imagine how tired everyone is
@@itaflamingodoe863 all the money in the world and it’s still couldn’t fix her reproductive system🤔💀🤌🏽🤷🏽♀️ like y’all bitches need to think smarter and not harder!?? HELLO?
Robert was an opportunist he watched Melinda spend her whole inheritance on him for 18 years without helping her with anything I don’t think he rlly cared for her other than the fact that she was supporting him in everything and what proves this is when she bought him a $20,000 car he then ghosted her and cheated on her with Diana
I agree all the take aways for his movies were terrible. Like he keeps telling black women to settle or stay in situations that make us struggle. Never ever telling men to do better like wtf
I think TP's comments on "high brow negroes" perfectly encapsulates his weaknesses as a writer/director. He cannot fathom that regardless of subject matter, his execution is way off. The egregious part is that he hasn't become a better filmmaker after 20 years of financial success. He's gotten worse. There are plenty of directors that have genres/themes throughout their films. However, you can see the effort and care put into that vision. His focus is on churning out product and he proudly says so. I don't watch his tv shows but I can't imagine they are much different. Now he's onto streaming and its an unholy union.
The shows are somehow way worse, I don't watch them but some of my friends do. He doesn't care at all about his work because he knows he's got his faithful following who will see it all no matter what. Very little actual logic and thinking goes into his scripts and it never fails to be a glaring issue with each movie/show.
It sometimes feels like TP punishes the women characters who get with the bad guy and ignores the nice guys in his films. Judith, Grace, Megan goods character, Melinda… it’s like it’s his way of punishing women for not choosing him IRL. And I wonder if his dad is dark skin. He’s got issues and he shows it in his work
Been saying it for years…him making money off black trauma and having zero other kinds of stories told in all these years is crazy and the stories he’s told have been told based in colorism and black woman pain…then the hair for anybody that’s not madea they can care less about them…I’m glad you put all of my thoughts in a video
Totally agree, Tyler Perry is the most like evangelical christian traditionalist view of love and relationships especially for black woman, essentially no matter what your partner does to you you should never leave them and be a martyr and miserable and forfeit your life.
@ I think acrimony was the biggest one, for like 15 years, the husband is out of work, trying to get this business idea off the ground, his wife is working multiple jobs, completely supporting him even sells her childhood home goes into debt for him and at the end of this story he actually makes it big just after she leaves him and then the ideas like oh see like you should’ve stayed. he literally wrote like the most implausible scenario possible where the woman gets treated like trash in order to support the guys dream to push the theme on us that you should stay with your deadbeat husband and support him forever because he might do something maybe possibly
@@bascal133 We must have had two very different viewing experiences because for me it was a cautionary tale to not be the come up woman because he would find some other woman and giver her the life you worked so hard for while you get left behind. But to each their own, I guess.
@@aaliyaheverett2601I completely agree. This was my takeaway too. Some men will settle for you only to please their ex partner in the end. Never sacrifice for someone who is not willing to sacrifice for you.
I really can't help shake the impression that Acrimony was Tyler Perry airing particular personal grievances after becoming rich, because it's kind of a story about this guy who looks like a total screw up that seems to have a complete pipe dream nobody believes in, but eventually becomes super-rich from it (like Tyler Perry), so he has his self-insert be this nice guy who tries to make amends, he has all those former acquaintances that are fundamentally villains that feel entitled to a piece of him. He doesn't have to be sympathetic to the wife anymore, he can make it about himself (more than usual).
I will always say it was completely unfair to Judith to live that sad ass life after her diagnosis. Yes her affair was wrong, but she didn’t deserve that!
Which is very shifty considering in the play while they still split she never got hiv. The play ended with them both apologizing and going their separate ways
Those early Madea movies are entertaining but that’s about it. Especially seeing how they aged from 15-20 years ago, there isn’t much at all that you should take away. You gotta see thru the brainwashing and just enjoy the movie for what it is. For example The family reunion scene from Madeas family reunion invoked that nostalgic African American family vibe that’s slowly dying out. That’s probably my favorite part of Tyler Perry’s movies, but I can’t do the colorism and bad wigs
The fact that i’m listening to this in the gym, trying to hit a workout, gasping at every sentence is ridiculous! I didn’t know they got down like that in Tyler Perry movies 🫢 I thought it was always silly haha Madea so crazy!
now if we just looked at his made movies from a comedy perspective then sure, i can see it. but even as a non black person i dont really understand how his “theme” of movies is supposed to help black ppl ? like sure, trauma is real in black ppl and other non white groups, like trauma is so prevalent in our lives as minorities, but to see us as only that is kinda … despairing. like as an asian trans guy, i have a lot of parental issues, as a lot of ppl my age who are also asian can relate too, but idk me personally im tired of crying over movies w asian culture and families and characters that involve healing bonds between parents and children that have very different ideologies about how to live life
Thank you so much for sharing❤! I definitely get what you mean. I do tend to cling on to black comedies and romance. It's uplifting to see yourself represented in media in a positive light. With Tyler Perry, I understand him writing from his life experiences but conceptually, some of his stories are just really problematic. I can respect that his movie genre is "drama", its his thought process and the take away of his stories that I find especially irritating lol.
I think that for Bryce... Honestly Judith didnt need to communicate that much on the s*x thing. Men know what women want, when she start kissing on him, and literally telling him to hit. He basically showed her that he wasnt that into her..they were just having s*x cause it was something they were supposed to do. I think its very much implied that Bryce wants to be a traditional man..but he didnt have the funds to be that at the time. And Judith was never interested in being a traditional wife...she wanted to career, the business, etc...
I despise Temptation. So much. Just when I think i hate any of his later movies, I remember Temptation and get angry all over again. While i dont know anyone who has HIV/AIDS, i still sympathize with the stigma surrounding them. To treat their condition as a punishment is to condemn people who contract it through other means and basically saying that the ones who do get it through sex (in any context) deserve to suffer as a lesson to those without. Its sick and cruel.
the reason why she cheated is bcc T.P. wanted to "punish" a woman for cheating, basically the rhetoric is that if she didn't all of those things wouldn't have happened to her. YES THAT IS DISGUSTING.
It's disgusting for a writer to punish someone for cheating? Also, I think he might have heard our complaints on this because he fixes this with I Do Want To Do Wrong and Madea Class Reunion (even though that play was bad) and technically I Can Do Bad All By Myself, the movie (April was a mistress and was cheating with a married man). I think his bigger sin is having the worst thing a woman can do is cheat. The worst thing a man can do is be a manipulative, abusive sociopath... who also cheats. A man who just cheats can be forgiven but a with a woman, eh, maybe, if she deserves it and is really sorry and if the husband feels like forgiving her. He's not obligated like the woman is. That, to me, is more problematic. He should have a movie/play where the man is at least left solely because he cheated, and that's all. There doesn't have to be another reason.
37:36 Robert was over Melinda after they first hooked up, he was already starting to ghost her before she bought the car. Then he cheated on her. I’m of the belief he always wanted Diana and settled for Melinda because she was a pushover for him.
I love the video but I feel like you glossed over the biggest problem with Temptation: Harley raped Judy. She had repeatedly rejected his advances and she said “No!” multiple times when he crawled on top of her, after he got her alone on a plane. When Judy got home after being raped on a private plane, looking tired and disheveled, both her own mother and husband immediately jump down her throat for going on a business trip. Bryce the space cadet wasn’t going to listen to her and her mom was disappointed she wasn’t being the ideal Christian wife. Her affair isn’t defensible but I can see why she went back to the guy who raped her because he was the only one that listened to her (atp anyway).
This is such an important take. I am not sure if its because the movie itself brushes past this and everything that follows after is such chaos but, after reading your comment, I literally had to run to Netflix and fastforward to that scene. This is my issue with some "dark romance" themes. I've seen so many movies and have read so many books that romanticize a woman "succumbing" to a man's advances. After rereading your comment and rewatching the scene, it definitely feels so much more sinister, and honestly... it kind of freaks me out that I didn't receive it that way the first time. Even with the private plane scene, I don't think TP wants the audience to sympathize with Judith. When I did this video, I watched the behind the scenes for some of the movies, including this one, and he describes the progression of Judith and Harley as a result of Judith's "own choices and her own decisions". Which I already knew his MO with the plot of the movie and what his "moral of the story" was but considering the private plane scene, it makes his ideology SIGNIFICANTLY worst and concerning. I've talked about this movie with sooo many people and not once has anyone described the private plane scene in the way you did. I think that is also telling of how maybe some of us should rethink sa and sa victims. Regardless of Judith's attraction to Harley and the context that we receive leading up to this scene and the scenes that follow after, she sure as hell did say no MULTIPLE TIMES. Thank you so much for your comment!
@ I’m glad I found another review channel, especially one critical of TP. I will say TP has a habit of sending very problematic messages about domestic and sexual violence, which is why I wish he’d stop trying to write about it from *his* perspective 🙄. I’m looking forward to see more of your opinions in your videos. 👍👍
@JJ-mr4vv Thank you 🙂. As long as its done so respectfully, I'll always encourage perspectives that may differ from mine or points that I may have missed!❤
In the second movie, it sounds like the lesson should have been "communicate with your partner your needs, if you cannot satisfy each other either find a solution or part ways instead of endangering yourself by running off thoughtlessly with someone who could very possibly ruin your life in a way that can't be undone" and I still think the ending would have been dramatic.
49:29 You forgot about how Tyler Perry had her out right clowning him after they were divorced like saying he stink and stuff lol. He absolutely wanted to make him the victim when he was one of the catalysts for the problem. I say one of because there was a whole second story here in this film that Tyler Perry completely neglected dealing with her potentially having an internal mental situation that her mother also had, it was a throw away line early in the film. I can't stand how he doesn't give his work the care it deserves.
can we talk about “ a jazzman’s blues” it’s the one movie where i feel like tyler perry went out his comfort zone & didn’t make the light skin man the savior rather the villain
Imma be so honest Tyler Perry’s movies gave me a terrible view of the black community. Based on what was happening at home and what was depicted in black movies growing up it was always the black women getting abused by the black man I completely wanted to detach from my black side. When I was 9 I promised myself that I would never get married to a black man. Up until this year I was never attracted to a black man. These movies while they are entertaining shouldn’t be movies we should be promoting to our community let alone our kids.
Speak on it. Thank you so much for sharing. I kind of know what you mean, growing up I had a skewed perception of the black community as a whole, especially black men 😭. It took me going to an HBCU for me to see that black people are so diverse and come from all walks of life. Til this day, I say going to an HBCU was the best decision I’ve ever made in terms of feeling connected and embraced by our community. The reality is there’s good and bad with every race/ethnicity. I’ve come to know and love some really amazing black men. It feels like sometimes media is set up specifically for us to demonize one another. ❤️❤️❤️
I think that happened to me to,not sure if it was Tyler specifically. I only stopped after realizing even whites are annoying and bad to each other. Also I started liking black men but more light skin for now but hopefully it will grow
I had a friend lose his life defending his woman from some dude talking shit. Now he dead and she happy. That taught me to learn how to de-escalate instead of trying to be tough. My life is more important than words. Now if they are physically putting their hands on her then that's different
Wait, what about The Family that Preys?? We have to give him his tens on that one. It's one of his best movies he only has a few good ones. But I definitely agree with your view points.
I feel Acrimony would have been a great movie to dive into mental illness in the black community and how it carries to the children undetected. In the movie the sisters mention their father had the same temperament. And possibly he had angry issues as well as some underlying mental health issues that were not addressed. And his daughter unfortunately had what he had. I feel if the movie ended with of course her being held accountable for her actions and then getting psychiatric help and learning to love herself, deal with her mother's passing and sister's neglect, as well as her mental illness and coming out on the other end healed or at least healing it would have been more powerful .
I haven’t seen Acrimony, but I think the take away was that sometimes you just had to let some stuff go. No matter how much it hurt you because if you keep holding onto your anger resentment than it would eventually lead to your downfall.
That’s what the movie was supposed to be, just based on the definition of “acrimony”. I think the intended concept got lost in the plot 😭. Thank you for sharing!🥰❤️❤️❤️
i actually dont mind his films. And my family really loves them all. But A Medea Halloween was one that stood out to me because the issue in the film is that Medea's nephew or something wont hit his kids and now his daughters become a bit of a delinquent. But then the film goes on to explain the reason as to why in a "joke" scene. Turns out Medea and the others traumatized him and went way too far on several occasions with one instance leaving one of his family jewels punctured.... Its no wonder he's scared to hit anyone now but Medea and co just laugh it off and can only respond with "but did you die?" Also theres some odd inappropriate jokes in there but mostly the traumatized father bit stood out since his refusal to dicipline his daughter was the main in-lore problem in the movie
i think that’s the point of the title. when they call us angry black women it’s almost never unjustified, they just try to gaslight us into thinking that.
Anybody who constantly watches his movies can tell Tyler Perry was sexually abused at a young age since he almost always adds a rape backstory in all his movies to forcefully sadden the moment.
Yeah I feel not a lot of people know thus. When I watched a interview about his life and how he was mo÷ested by a women a black one I'm telling you everything came together in my head. The movies made sense and I can sense a little hatred
There is something I really find annoying in Tyler perry movies and that's the fact that there are so many lose ends that don't get wrapped up thought the story. In Diary of a Mad Black Woman for example When the ex-husband gets shot and his wife comes back to torture him. we never see his light skinned side chick or her children ever again after the first few scenes in the movie. What happened to her? Did she leave him? I haven't watched the movie in a while, but I don't remember it being explained why he lived alone tbh.
When Helen goes back to "help/torture" Charles lol, she mentions that Brenda emptied out his bank account and left. I have noticed that with some of his movies as well. Where the ending feels a bit rushed.
In temptation I know a lot of ladies do not like this story. But In marriage when there are problems you have to communicate. Judith would state a want with no follow through. You have to teach people especially your partner how to treat you. I still think Bryson should’ve been more hands on but our partners cannot read our minds. I just think they could’ve solved issues with more long intimate and proactive conversations. With Bryson he was definitely disconnected, neglectful, and passive. He should take accountability for that and recognize where he might’ve went wrong so he doesn’t repeat it in another relationship. However, none of this is reason to cheat. Now on to Harley, I believe he is a complex villain with a terrifying history of neglect and abuse. It was so shitty for him to drag her out of the house but it was also shitty for her to bring up his history of abuse to humiliate him. Not to mention when he promoted her to make a decision about him she threw wine and food at him. I’m sorry but that is not how to communicate with people not your husband or your side piece. Judith was definitely a flawed character and not as much as a victim as I previously thought. Honestly, this is a story with no heroes. In life we can and will hurt the ones we love and most of the time it’s unintentional, but the road to hell is paved with good intentions. We need to be more active and accountable to move forward.
I agree in terms of Judith and Bryce, they most definitely could've cordially resolved their issues by either continuing their marriage or getting a divorce. Relationships definitely take work, and I do not think that was something either of them were prepared for 😭. Now, I will say I do have a different perception of Harley and Judith's interaction from when I first made the video. Someone pointed out that although Judith may have began emotionally cheating on Bryce, and was physically attracted to Harely, that their first sexual interaction was not as black as white as I initially perceived (I'm referencing the private plane scene when Judith and Harely went on their business trip). I had to go back and watch it after reading a comment that pointed this out. Harley's character was indeed sinister. Thank you so much for sharing!! I'm enjoying reading your takes ❤❤❤
@@MalliPeace thank you, yes my partner and I discussed that private jet scene today and him and I agree that their first sexual encounter was sexual assault or sexual manipulation.
I think in acrimony it’s not as much about making Robert the victim as it is highlighting the complexity of human nature and distorted perception. We all want to believe that people are either good or evil but most people are a combination of both.
I think it was more so about carrying or being consumed by resentment "acrimony". The movie definitely displays all of the things you mentioned. I don't think the movie was about making Robert into the victim but I do think Tyler Perry wrote his character as a victim to further his perception of acrimony. Making Melinda's character unjust. Which to an extent she definitely is unjust not with her feelings per se but how she chose to express them throughout the movie. Thank you for sharing!!❤
Yea his films are pretty bad but fun to turn your brain off & be entertained lol. Thanks for making this video. Hot take but “Witness Protection Program”, “Good Deeds”, & “Acrimony” are his worst films 😂
Just found your channel. I really like the way you break down stories it's really relaxing to listen to while I draw and do chores around the house. Subbed ❤
I agree with your take on Confessions Of A Marriage Counselor. FYI a person who rides a bike is a cyclist while a biker is a person who rides a motorcycle.
I wish Tyler would hire different writers/directors to tackle different genres with more Black and other characters, like fantasy, action, musical, etc. Just to really expand beyond trauma/drama while elevating Black actors.
I always wanted to make a video on this. I think it's because there's not a lot of known black directors that can be up to his level(maybe Spike). Tyler does movies and tv,his shows and movies were the only time I saw someone look like me. I feel lots of the older actors are moving on though which is good
28:07 my parents are counselors, and they have been happily married for over 40 years, but some of their counselor colleagues and friends are terrible cheaters. And in fact, one of the things they run into when training new counselors is really having to hammer home that you cannot have relations with people who are your clients, especially when you are a marriage counselor for effs sake. Anyway, so my point is it’s actually pretty realistic to have someone who wants to be a marriage counselor be clueless about marriage and a functioning relationship.
What’s more frustrating is that his first few movies were so good, then he got his billions and just started churning out the same lazy schlop (I don’t know if that’s a word) with the same plot line and bad wigs, lines that sound like they were AI written and rushed. Also, for a man to have that much money for production, viewers should not be noticing haphazardly placed microphones in various scenes😑.
I appreciate this video you’ve made. I’m a white dude who never really got the appeal of Tyler Perry movies, in fact they seem to be bad, but I’m aware I’m not the target audience so I was always curious if I was just missing something. I appreciate someone breaking down his work critically so I can have a broader view of it.
Rewatched Diary... its good, even when she toss him in the tub!! I never watched Confessions... but my mom and I saw Acrimony in theaters and we enjoyed it, but thinking too hard, it was definitely questionable lol. Gonna subscribe!!
24:28 I disagree with your description of toxic masculinity as a man I constantly see women just throw that term around anger is not a masculine trait it is just anger in an extreme angry reaction doesn't elicit masculinity both genders can and has exhibited the same trait of anger and or anger issues typically and statistically speaking women are more passive aggressive and that is how women exude their own level of aggression but no one would call women masculine for being passive aggressive nor will it be deemed as toxic masculinity either
I honestly feel like Perry's main problem is that his views are generally outdated, stagnant, and lack creativity or nuance and he's too arrogant to make changes that would benefit his productions as a whole. I had to hang it up after Acrimony when I realized for most of his movie, the actors are carrying the entire experience even when the writing is bad. I can always say there's a good scene as opposed to a good movie. To this day, I think he's only made 2 or 3 movies that were actually good that I can return to. For me, most of his content has no replay value as a complete body of work. The older I get, the worse his movies are in my opinion.
41:23 omg why did you say that when i said it, so weird but true!!!!!! like wtf *i’ve watched the movie countless times and never understood why Tyler seemed to had wanted to teach women a “lesson” by writing that Micheal gets a million dollar offer after the facts.. like huh? lol😭*
The self defense thing with Harley and Bryce was completely different. With Bryce there was a group of guys talking to Judith and with Harley there was a normal guy on a bicycle. I know that Harley wouldn’t have done anything if he was in the same situation as Bryce.
I loved how Brice the husband walked away from those rude guys on the street because who gives a fuck what they are saying, as long as they don’t put hands on you. Just walk away because it can go from 0 to 100 real quick And honestly if she wanted to try something new like why couldn’t she just tell him and try to explain it to him? Like where is the communication? And the birthday thing, when it’s his birthday does she do anything for him? Cause I feel like I’d understand more if she does things for his birthday but he doesn’t for her.
I’m Latina and I loved his first couple movies. His last ones are pretty cringe, especially the homecoming. The Madea boo movies were very cheesy. The movie, the diary of a black woman, is very relatable even if you weren’t black. How many women are there in the world haven’t been left for a younger woman? I really think her anger was justified whether she was black or not.
I always feel his characters are 1D which leads to so many problems. Like isn't so black and white but he sure tries to present it that way in his movies
29:34 taking responsibility for choosing that man knowing that about him after ignoring signs and leaving her whole husband. She knew it wasn't right to be with him but it felt good and she acknowledges the consequences from it all.
I think there might be some confusion, I was not speaking about Judith's character but Melinda's character (Harley's ex). Melinda was not married when she met Harley they were in a committed relationship/college sweethearts, he cheated and gave her an STD. Thank you for sharing!
I love his Medea movies but I can't get behind shaming the victim of abuse to their abusive family members. That one mother that pimped her daughter out to a man to stay and give money
What I don’t like about Tyler Perry because he has the opportunity to give up and coming black creators an opportunity to show what they can do, with his production company. Imagine how many POCs could’ve benefited from that. Instead what he cares about is purely the profit coming in and nothing else. So he recycles the same crap.
I dislike most Tyler Perry movies. He has some type of hatred towards black women. Each plot has to have the black woman suffer or die. Also the colorism too.
I agree! Honestly IMO it’s because Tyler is gay and has mommy issues and takes it out on black women! He also makes black men look like trash!! Recently some of his male black actors have accused him of sexual harassment and possibly worst!
I hate that the black woman is ALWAYS the bad guy. Even when black men are bad it is somehow a black woman's fault. Man grapes girl? cuz the mom let him type ish.
I can't really put it on the man Melinda and Robert both made unhealthy choices in their relationship and marriage. Also the disrespect that Melinda allowed to come from her sisters was uncalled for. She basically allowed everyone to get in their head without rationally think things through.
Definitely let people talk to her husband all crazy and then hype her up for an divorce why she get a divorce when she already came this long say I feel like she should have taken that money and dipped that man begged her to stay yesh he wasn’t a saint he definitely was a user ut he made it and payed her back she owed her 1 million he made her 10 million plus the house and mortgage

The fact that the boondocks episode still holds true for most of his films tells me all I need to know
"seriously man can i just get some azz?" -boondocks perry
"Cross dress for Christ!" The Boondocks killed it with that
Perry has such an opportunity to get other black writers/directors/creatives off the ground to tell DIFFERENT stories in the black experience. Being reduced to trauma is exhausting at this point.
My god is that so true! He could’ve been the black equivalent of Walt Disney and handled the producer
/businessman role, while recruiting new and old talent to tell innovative black stories/films.
Now he’s being overshadowed by the likes of Ryan Coogler and Jordan Peele (and many more talented black directors), when in a different timeline, if he had played his cards right, those directors could’ve been making films under HIS production.
Basically exploitation
Perry prefers to be the smartest one in the room and in control.
He been trying to put them in the fat front. But they constantly want to be equal to him or want to humble him. So he said f it and continue doing his thing
His movies remind me of plots you see on Lifetime.
Nicely Said
I had to argue with my Grandma about this.
She argued that Harley was right and Judith just wanted to save face/have an excuse.
Uh, no. He coerced her into sleeping with him, proved that he won’t take no for an answer, and he is in a position of power over her. That was r*pe.
Tyler Perry's Temptation Moral of the Story:
Stay with your boring, emotionally-detached spouse or else you'll die alone with HIV.
Loll really though! There was so much opportunity with this plot and that's what he decided to go with???
Literally...but in the play...they stay together and she doesn't get hiv...they pray to basically stay together, and their parents wants them to stay together.
@@MalliPeacethey don’t stay together in the movie she gets hiv and her business and she ends with telling another lady her story to save her marriage and he moves on with a new family owning the pharmacy she gets her medicine from

I think Kimberly Elise should have at least been Oscar nominated for her performance in diary of a mad Black woman. She was phenomenal to say the least in that performance
Have you seen her in Women who art thou loosed? She absolutely killed it, carried the whole movie
@@angelofthe2000s yes I did! She was amazing in that one too! And she was amazing in For Colored Girls as well. She's long overdue for an Oscar

Kimberly Elise should be wayyyyy bigger than what she is. I hate that she’s not in more roles bc mama is TALENTED. She portrays e v e r y role like the rent is due.
Absolutely 😭😭
Tyler Perry's thoughts on therapy and therapists is pretty clear if you look at his movies.
Acrimony felt like they were punishing the character for deciding that enough was enough of letting this man use her and now she can't get entirety of the blessings that she helped if not worked for

I agree all the take aways for his movies were terrible. Like he keeps telling black women to settle or stay in situations that make us struggle. Never ever telling men to do better like wtf
Exactly. I feel like the “hold your man down” trope is pushed onto bw wayyy too often in his films.
Or ever ever telling men to do THE SAME!!! Tf
Struggle? Charles had Helen in a 30 Bedroom mansion!
One of the reasons he couldn't get a job was because he was a felon, which of course he didn't tell her before she was invested in him.
10 million would’ve been enough for me to never think about him again
Right... what's the point of having that beautiful studio if he's just gonna keep it to himself and put out shitty material
It sometimes feels like TP punishes the women characters who get with the bad guy and ignores the nice guys in his films. Judith, Grace, Megan goods character, Melinda… it’s like it’s his way of punishing women for not choosing him IRL. And I wonder if his dad is dark skin. He’s got issues and he shows it in his work
Don't forget Mea
Been saying it for years…him making money off black trauma and having zero other kinds of stories told in all these years is crazy and the stories he’s told have been told based in colorism and black woman pain…then the hair for anybody that’s not madea they can care less about them…I’m glad you put all of my thoughts in a video
Totally agree, Tyler Perry is the most like evangelical christian traditionalist view of love and relationships especially for black woman, essentially no matter what your partner does to you you should never leave them and be a martyr and miserable and forfeit your life.
Wait, what movie/play this was where the message was this?
Perry's takeaway from Tempation should've been "communicate with your spouse and/or dont fall into a comfortable loop with your spouse"
Lmaooo 😭😭😭 yes! Some of his drama films are insane 😮💨
That Cardi B voice over for the wigs was so good 😂
I didn’t see that part yet but I know exactly what voice over you’re talking about.
now if we just looked at his made movies from a comedy perspective then sure, i can see it. but even as a non black person i dont really understand how his “theme” of movies is supposed to help black ppl ? like sure, trauma is real in black ppl and other non white groups, like trauma is so prevalent in our lives as minorities, but to see us as only that is kinda … despairing. like as an asian trans guy, i have a lot of parental issues, as a lot of ppl my age who are also asian can relate too, but idk me personally im tired of crying over movies w asian culture and families and characters that involve healing bonds between parents and children that have very different ideologies about how to live life
Thank you so much for sharing❤!
I love the video but I feel like you glossed over the biggest problem with Temptation:
Harley raped Judy.

I talked about it when I initially recorded the video but had to cut it out because it ran too long 😭😩💔

The main message for me was: Never be the come up woman. Never let a man drain you in the spirit of "holding him down."
I was definitely congested while recording so apologies in advance lol. 😩😭
No
i think that’s the point of the title. when they call us angry black women it’s almost never unjustified, they just try to gaslight us into thinking that.
I can't stand his movies, I get pissed off every time i see one come on tv
I agree. TP has the resources to show positive aspects of Black culture. He chooses to go for the drama.
@MalliPeace oh okay

Sometimes I be wondering what Tyler Perry did to get respected black actors and actresses to make appearances in his ridiculous movies
I always wanted to make a video on this. I think it's because there's not a lot of known black directors that can be up to his level(maybe Spike). Tyler does movies and tv,his shows and movies were the only time I saw someone look like me. I feel lots of the older actors are moving on though which is good
Something about Tyler Perry’s viewpoint gives internal racism
He was abused by a black women
28:07 my parents are counselors, and they have been happily married for over 40 years, but some of their counselor colleagues and friends are terrible cheaters. And in fact, one of the things they run into when training new counselors is really having to hammer home that you cannot have relations with people who are your clients, especially when you are a marriage counselor for effs sake. Anyway, so my point is it’s actually pretty realistic to have someone who wants to be a marriage counselor be clueless about marriage and a functioning relationship.
I love temptation. Judith wasn't mature enough to be married. Too many women confuse consistency with monotony.

The writers PUNISHED Judy for being written as a cut and dry villain. Something Tyler has a bad habit of doing.
41:23 omg why did you say that when i said it, so weird but true!!!!!! like wtf
*i’ve watched the movie countless times and never understood why Tyler seemed to had wanted to teach women a “lesson” by writing that Micheal gets a million dollar offer after the facts.. like huh? lol😭*
Yessss, like the concept of "acrimony" could have been done so much better but he put too much emphasis on his underlying message 😭
Ain't no husband forgetting his wife's birthday two years in a row that's part of that bullshit that we be talking about with Tyler Perry
21:14 Facts Facts Facts!!!
Dang the way you explain things you would think you've been married for at least 20years 😂
The self defense thing with Harley and Bryce was completely different.
Just walk away because it can go from 0 to 100 real quick
And honestly if she wanted to try something new like why couldn’t she just tell him and try to explain it to him? Like where is the communication?
And the birthday thing, when it’s his birthday does she do anything for him? Cause I feel like I’d understand more if she does things for his birthday but he doesn’t for her.
Tyler Perry does thee most!!!!!!!
Thee UPMOST. The beginning of Divorce in the Black was soooo unserious. The whole movie was but the beginning had me so pissed lollll
Ngl the madea movies are top tier
I know they're cheesy AF with all the damn tik tokers and youtubers but Boo! A Madea Halloween (1 and 2) are on my television every Halloween 😩 lol
7:07 my girl said there will be some slow singing and flower bring. Dude gonna end up on a T-shirt.
Amazing grace…
29:34 taking responsibility for choosing that man knowing that about him after ignoring signs and leaving her whole husband. She knew it wasn't right to be with him but it felt good and she acknowledges the consequences from it all.
I think there might be some confusion, I was not speaking about Judith's character but Melinda's character (Harley's ex). Melinda was not married when she met Harley they were in a committed relationship/college sweethearts, he cheated and gave her an STD. Thank you for sharing!
this title 😂😂😂
10 million.... Robert who?? Lol
Lolll exactlyyy buy a new Robert 😭💀
Right?? The way I would have took that 10 million and ran off to start a random Parisan romance with some European man is crazy.
All of em...
😂😂😂
I have Daphne 😂😂
Lolll and she is a true menace 😩
ok algorithm ❤
@@EclecticPotpourri 🥰❤️❤️
Oh girl, it is 5° here 🫡
Ooh that would RUIN my anemic ass omg 🥶😰 lol we barely got into the 50s this week!
