      @@Burndown I'm not much for body work, but if the machine shop can hurry it up I'll do my best to blow the doors off somebody then.

    So helpful. Instead of switch a really really bad door for a bad door the skinning looks like a good route. Thanks for showing us!!

      A door skin has its place. If the damage is severe and takes up half the old skin its easier to do a skin. Problem with a skin is the structure of the door can be toast so you run into more metal work before you can re attach the new skin. I got lucky this time for once.

    I 'm 66 and body and paint guy for 44 years, we grind the panel edge till it falls, off then replace the skin ,then put the door on = line up the edges, then tape it , remove door , roll a few edges and spot them, then finish rolling and spot tacking , clean welds, prime , sand , reprime, then seam sealer. No problems in 44 years and about 200 skins.

      Thanks for the advice! Skins are the way to go really.

    Love that chisel trick to let you know when to stop grinding. Thank you!

    • @Burndown
      @Burndown  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah anything will work. I use that to get started and then you can just put a glove on and pull up on the loose flap with one hand and grind with the other and it will come up as you go. Thats what I did in the time lapse if you really look you can see me doing that.

    Hi Dane, awesome video, that looked like a very nice door skin, wishing I had some of your heat it’s Tuesday morning and 47 degrees up here in Montana, thanks for the video, can’t wait to see it painted. Have a great day.

      Yeah 47 is a bit on the cool side. It gets down to freezing over night every once in a while but most of the time were above that even in the winter. Im hoping to prime it soon and then im gonna switch gears a little and see if we can stuff a little more meat on the rear before we paint. That way I dont have to worry about the new paint work when im cutting things out of the back of the car.

    • @Burndown
      @Burndown  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah its intimidating when you take the skin off and it looks like you ruined it. 🤣 If I had taken all the old skin off and drilled or removed all the old pinch welds it takes a bit more effort.

    cool i need to do this to my 65 el camino but to the driver side quarter panel.

    • @Burndown
      @Burndown  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you can get the whole panel do it. It will take longer to cut the old one off then it will to install the new one. Just take your time you'll be good!

    Excellent repair it will be the only true metal straight panel on that Chevrolet. I can see and feel the frustration . Ive been there body and mechanical messes I’ve had to sort out and restore . Gonna be a cool track car , thank you for posting the video. Peace friend

    • @Burndown
      @Burndown  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah man. I did put some dings in it when I was working on it. Probably form flipping it onto the skin side down the hammer the edge over. Still straighter than the rest of it 🤣 Im getting excited to paint the thing but I have a ways to go still.

    Lookin good Dane. That was way faster than repairing and body working that other skin by far.

    • @Burndown
      @Burndown  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah. I spent quite a bit of time stripping that other skin before I gave up too. 😅

  • @dandorris8531

    Nice work, I’ve been told those skins are labor intensive.

    • @Burndown
      @Burndown  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think its more of a pain to take all the glass and everything out then it is to put the skin on. This was all shot in one afternoon after work. I put the glass in and put it back on the car the next afternoon so it could be done in a day if your door is not rotten and your just slamming it on like I did. 😆

    • @Burndown
      @Burndown  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Flux core is tricky but it can be done. Im running a 220 mig with gas. Best thing you can do is get some shielding gas. Will make your life easier if your trying to do sheet metal.

    • @Burndown
      @Burndown  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I build classic cars one at a time form the ground up. Im probably gonna change things up a little next year depending on how life goes and get more into doing just the LS swap portion of the builds and taper off on the full build side of things. We will see
