Ten years or more ago, I had traffic stopping (literally) beautiful 3b perfect blond curls. For unknown reasons, my hair is now 2b at best. I miss my pretty curls and it took me awhile to come to terms with my 'loss', but I'm ok now with it. My hair is not damaged and has not been for years, but it was back when I had tighter curls. The only thing I can think of is hormone changes, but I'm not certain.
Gena Marie yes it definitely took longer then I had liked. Though It's likely because it takes so long for hair to become long enough to be noticed. The difference I feel was most noticeable around a year, year and a half. For my hairline, it was noticed faster. With new growth and smaller baby hairs.
@@quinnalameI really feel you, I've personally almost always had an iron deficiency. Now, I'm researching more and more how food can be used to treat iron deficiency.
@@quinnalameSome tips I have 1) consume more iron rich foods (red meat, spinach, tofu, etc.) 2) don't drink tea or coffee right after a meal or with a meal. Allow 1-2 hours after the meal because the tanins in coffee and tea reduce iron consumption. 3) Pair iron-rich foods with beta carotene foods. 4) vitamin C helps with iron absorption (you can either drink some juice or have a piece of fruit after having a meal that contains iron).
Thank you for bringing attention to this! I definitely had thicker hair when I was younger. I had a serious hormone issue and I think that really had an effect on my hair. I am now learning to deal with my lower density curls. I've also learned that certain products really reduce the curls and just flatten out the roots. Again thank you for all of your incredibly helpful info!
Great video - changes to hair over time are so common. There's a real bias in the curly community where curly = healthy, so curlier = healthier. My curls are tightest when my hair is unhealthy and overly dry, for example I have tighter curls in winter when I'm spending lots of time in heated indoor spaces. And hormones definitely impact: I had almost straight hair until puberty, then curly, and so far menopause has made it curlier but lower density.
I love this topic, since I have had two hair texture changes in my life. And my sister has mastered this phenomenon about 5 times. 😂 Once seemed to have happened overnight. My sister and niece swore they believed I got a perm and wouldn’t believe me when I said I noticed my hair changing so I bought a styler and BOOM! 3a/3b3/c curl explosion. It was Aussie Dewplex, I bought it in bulk since I had thin/ low density stick straight never hold a curl hair for my early life then a wavy, weird not straight and not curly, just enough to ruin hairstyles hair. I was ecstatic to pick a lane. Here is something that has also changed is color. I don’t want to make this so long BUT. I grey early and didn’t realize until hindsight it was my thyroid and stress. I had to have surgeries due to this problem and every surgery I would come out with new patch of grey. I was in my 30’s and no one on either side grey early. At 40 I had more grey than my mother who was 63 at the time. 😮 so now my hair falls out a lot and this creates more grey 🎉🎉🎉 but the grey stays on top because it never gets a chance to get to the end before I have another hair drop. 😭 I have always loved my grey because I have dark hair but the half and half hair is harder to love. I edited to added this because you mentioned health issues, I researched years ago and I think I found that grey hair was caused by hyperthyroidism. (?) or just thyroid hormone imbalances. I noticed the change in your hair, you mentioned think it is weird you hair is much healthier and curls are larger. I just watched another curly hair creator that said the diameter of her curl is bigger, when she cut off and grew out the colored hair her hair is healthier and the smaller tighter curls were due to the damage. She said her hair is very soft and she has big bouncy curls. She is a very educated and well researched cosmetologist. I will look for the episode to make sure I am relaying correct info 😂 I love your hair, it looks so much healthier. You hair will continue to grow in healthier. 🎉
I really was frustrated with my curl pattern when I switched gels. I ran out of one product and wanted to try a different one that turns out wasn’t a match for my hair. I switched to a strong hold gel when the sales hit, and I can’t believe the difference in my curls. Thanks for all your reviews and how-to’s! I follow a few curly influencers and appreciate having input from different hair and scalp types to help me filter through all the products that are available. I feel so much more prepared when I’m shopping and diagnosing my own needs!
@@ma5953 Not Your Mother’s Curl Talk Hard Hold Hair gel is what I’m using atm. I don’t think it will be my Holy Grail, but it is giving me much better results. My curls have held and lasted over a week, but the finish is kinda dull even after breaking the cast with an oil. I would buy it again since the hold is awesome and it’s very affordable. I also bought the Ouidad Advanced Climate Control Heat and Humidity Stronger Hold Gel and Curlsmith In-Shower Style Fixer while they were on sale, but I haven’t tried them yet.
Thyroid condition was a HUGE factor for me on top of Anemia! Once I started taking Levothyroxine for my thyroid daily my density tripped within a year it’s so insane! Hope this helps someone out there! ❤
My hair texture has changed a few times over my 34 years. It was straight when I was young. Wavy as a kid, loose spirals as a young adult, and now it’s back to very very loose beach waves lol. I just go with it. I’ve also noticed that when I dyed my hair, it would thin my hair out, and cause a different texture. When I stoped dying my hair, my strands thickened and thus was heavier, making my hair curls/waves looser
Hormones absolutely change curls! Entering puberty, pregnancy, birth control pills or hormone replacement, menopause, chemo (puts you into early menopause)...even the amount of fats vs sugar you eat (because insulin is a hormone lever: limit sugar but increase good fats like avocado and olives to see what I mean). That's why so many people talk about pregnancy hair and chemo curls.
I am so glad I came across this video. I really thought I was the only one who was experiencing this. My curls used to be tighter in my late teens, early 20s (3b all over) and now i have more of 3a in the crown and 3b underneath and at the nape of my neck (i am now 27). My hair is virgin so I thought it would bring my hair back to that tighter pattern. unfortunately it hasn’t. External and internal factors definitely play a part in the hair. 100% agree with gena when she said we shouldn’t strive to have a curl pattern we don’t have anymore. let’s embrace our curls!
I have a 4 year old and a 1 year old and each time my hair went from 3c to 3b. It takes a long time to grow it out. The first time I was pregnant, I cut it all off after 8 months from giving birth. This time I am trying to keep the length but having bad hair days all the time is not easy. Thanks so much for this video based on science.
If you are wanting topics for future videos, I would love to know more details about how specific hormones impact your curl pattern. My hair got much more curly after my first baby, and has been more wavy after my second. It was more damaged then from highlighting, so maybe the damage was impacting my curl pattern, since the increased porosity allowed it to soak up products better for a stronger hold? I don't know, but I miss my curls. In the winter, it almost isn't worth the trouble to style my hair curly, because it's a gamble whether it will look good or not.
I never knew how to take care of my hair , it was frizzy and really looked bad. Now I have curls and waves I never knew I had. You and a few others I have found, you all have helped me so very much!!! Thank you
Chemotherapy a year ago made my straight hair curly, 2b/c. Thanks to your channel I am learning to take care of them and hope they stay. Thank you for sharing all information.
I had very coily curly hair as a child, then it loosened to just wavy as a teen, got kindof coily again as a young adult, then almost straightened out and got very thin after having kids. I am 49 now, was very sick last year and didnt eat hardly anything for about 3 weeks. Then i had bariatric surgery a month later and started losing weight. So, due to diet (even with all of the vitamins and protein) i lost most of my hair down to a wispy mullet (because of it breaking off above my ears too). Then, to my surprise, it is growing back in as super coily curls allover like when i was a child. Not thick, but super curly. I am baffled but hope these curls last a while at least👍. Love and appreciate all of your videos- take care! 🧡👍🧡👍
Thank you for making this video! I used to have 3A hair w/ medium strand thickness & high density, but over the past couple of years, it became 2B-2C & fine, still high density. I first noticed when I got a haircut & grew it out & noticed that my ponytail wasn’t as thick as it used to be & it wasn’t growing out as curly as it was before. I was so confused bc I was thinking, “Did a haircut really change my hair?” However, I’ve recently learned that I moved to an area with very hard water. Also, around that time, I changed birth control pills, so that may be a factor, too. I used to just be able to put mousse in my hair & call it a day & it would dry up so curly. Now, I have pretty long routine, but I’m really happy with my hair at this moment. It has come a long way since it changed. :)
Same thing happened to me, minus the birth control switch! I have no idea what caused mine because so many factors were changing at that time. It could have been emotional and physical stress, taking biotin, using vitamins more regularly. No clue! But it all started with my haircut 🤷🏻♀️
I ditched birth control pills when I was 27. Due to some changes in my body that caused some unwelcome effects, my doctor increased the strength of my pills. The increased synthetic progesterone caused an increase in hair loss, so I stopped the pill, for good. My hair did grow back, but it was scary, at the time. Synthetic hormones cannot be good for our bodies. Besides the dangers of putting synthetic chemicals into our bodies on a daily basis, they compete with the body's natural rhythms. I learned natural family planning and never looked back! I got more energy, my hair grew back, and my body felt lighter after discontinuing the pill and letting my body do naturally what it was meant to do all along!
@@rebeccabagnall6522 I just installed a filter shower head, but with the cold, dry weather, I’m not getting much curl, so don’t know what my hair will look like in our normal humidity. For sure, there is less calcium staining my shower.
Yep. I moved almost 4 years ago from MI to CA and my curls haven’t been quite the same since. I have fine curly hair and my curls used to be tighter (probably because of the humidity), but my top layer especially has definitely relaxed some since moving. I still have some tighter curls underneath, but it’s been a struggle for me to adjust (I’ve tried haircuts, different products, and I try to take good care of my hair so it remains healthy), though I probably just need to accept it for what it is.
Sun damage plays a huge part but we don’t always hear about it. My top layer of hair is rough, and I attribute some of that to UV exposure. I try to cover it now, but that isn’t always possible.
I notice after I let my gray curls alone has been growing nicely and healthy! I have very fine hair I do dry detangle with some oil, and a denman brush in area that is needed. On my bangs finger coiling it works best. Love your tutorial! I've learned to love my hair❤
My hair was 3c/4a before going through chemo. Now it's more 3b/3a. I thought it would eventually go back to the tighter curls, but it'll be 4 years in March since my last treatment, so I guess this is it.
Great video, Gena! I grew up having straight hair. I don't think it was just an instance of my hair being treated like it was straight because there was no frizz or poofiness or anything. When I would just let my hair air dry naturally without touching it, it would dry straight and smooth. My grandmother was a hair stylist back then, and she even gave me some perms, which I don't think she would have needed to do if my hair had any sort of texture to it. I only first noticed changes in my hair once I hit my 30's. It's possible my hair changed texture sooner, but I spent my 20's constantly bleaching my hair so it was very damaged. Once Covid hit and the salons closed up, I could no longer go get my hair bleached again. As my hair was growing out, that's when I noticed some wave to it. I began looking up information on the wavy and curly subreddit's as well as looking up youtube videos. I believe that's how I initially found your channel. I started doing wavy/curly routines and when the salons opened back up, I went and had all the damaged parts cut off. Almost two years later, and my hair is much healthier now. Not only that, but I am still shocked at how curly it has become. My curl pattern is a little bit looser than yours, but it's still pretty close. My mom has straight hair, but my dad has wavy/curly hair, so I know I have the gene. I think like you mentioned in this video, some internal factor must have activated it. I recently had some doctors appointments and he believes I might have a hormonal disorder (which I still have to have a follow up appointment about). Not only that, but my gynecologist also mentioned that she believes my body is now in the perimenopause cycle. So these hormonal changes likely could have caused the change to my hair texture.
Had wavy hair until puberty when it became beautifully curly (3b). Pregnancy, occurring 4 times between 30 and 37 years old, killed my gorgeous hair. It was back to the slightly wavy hair of my youth. Well! Along comes menopause and my gorgeous curls have returned! Then last week I had foil highlights, and the lighter "curl" clumps are now straight! Crazy!
I love your very informative videos. Many thanks! My hair was falling out and getting so thin I had to wear hair toppers and wigs. Several doctors later, I finally found one that understood hormones. Once he was able to balance my hormones correctly, my hair started growing in like crazy! I’m 63 and done dying my roots, now it’s time for this grandma to embrace her grey/silver curls, my curls have never been so healthy and bouncy. Less chemicals and more natural is always the best internally and externally👏🏼
If you had known your hair would be healthier/more curly without dying it would you have stopped sooner? I ask bc my hair started turning grey and white in my mid 20s and i have dyed it since then. I always told myself i would stop dying it when i turned 40 bc how can the chemicals be good for your hair? I am a few years away but am sick of the hassle and wonder if maybe i should just take the plunge and go grey?
I read Suzanne Somers books about bio-identical hormones and learned so much. My previous hormone dr. had me on DHEA (helps with vaginal dryness and it’s over the counter), estrogen (hot flashes and night sweats), progesterone (sleeping) and testosterone (libido). My new hormone dr. after seeing my lad work, immediately took me off testosterone! He said, that’s why you’re losing your hair! That’s a male hormone, you’re a woman and women don’t need it! He was right. As soon as I stopped it, my hair grew back beautifully. I love my new hormone doctor, he really gets it and knows what he’s doing.
I admit to spending way too much energy missing the "perfect" straight hair I had into my thirties. It was gorgeous, thick, and low-maintenance; air-drying and a quick brush and I looked like I had a blowout. My hair immediately got curlier when I got pregnant at 33- there was literally a horizontal line in my hair, below which was pretty straight and above was wavy. I had finally gotten used to styling it when COVID stress hit (at 43). Suddenly my hair became unpredictable and unruly. Not only was it way thinner, I went from 2a-b to 2c-3a. I'm still experimenting, but can get nice clumpy results except on wash day (weird, I know - my hair just likes being a little dirty, I think). I have minimal grey and never color my hair, and use heat a few times a month. I'm in early perimenopause, but I'm already on de facto hormone replacement so who knows what's next? 🤷♀️
Some ten years ago I had curly hair mostly 3b, bright, higher density and medium thickness. In my case, the no/low poo destroyed it. It became 2b/2c/3a, fine, opaque and it fell... a lot. I ignored the changes for 7 years until my friends started asking what was wrong. In 2019, I left the method and went back to sulfate/silicones/washing everyday. Since then, my hair has recovered (save for curling from root). Now it is changing again but due to menopause approaching (I think). It is more 3a than 3b.
Has your curl pattern changed? Please share your story in the comments! Thank you to everyone who submitted photos for this video!! All the info is summarized on my blog here: genamarie.co/2022/12/why-curl-patterns-change-over-time/
I did not have curly hair growing up, it was straight, due to hormone changes beginning in my 30’s it is now curly. I am now 54 and it gets curlier every year!! Crazy!!
I think I’ve finally realized what is going on with my ‘trouble spot’. I was burned years ago. My front temple section was burned severely. That section tends to be less curly, it curls in the wrong direction and oddly the texture is different I find it difficult to get a gel cast on that section. It’s not damaged for almost 2 years I’ve been doing CG, mostly curlsmith products which is how I found you. The follicle must have been scarred changing its natural shape when I was burned, lucky any grew back I suppose. CG Enlightenment! Thanks Gena Marie!
I had the typical Asian hair from birth until high school/college. I straightened my hair for 20 years and didn’t embrace my natural waves/curls until last year. I haven’t met anyone else that who had straight hair turn curly.🤷🏻♀️ side note: my grandma, dad, and aunt have naturally wavy hair too.
happened to me, mine was hormonal-- surgical menopause early then natural meno about age 51-53 ish.... I had straight fine hair all my life then it turned wavy/curly.
I'm not Asian but when I was younger, I had exactly that type of hair. In fact, my stylist at the time had worked in California with a lot of Asian clients told me that! It started to change slowly after menopause but really speeded up after a couple of surgeries to the point of becoming unmanageable. Then being denied professional cuts & color for several months, I started to let it air dry and realized that I had a pronounced wave. When I returned to my stylist, she cut it to enhance the wave and recommend certain products. I've never looked back - the time it takes to do my hair is a fraction of what it was.
Even though your curls used to be "tighter", they weren't as ringlet shaped as they are now, they were only really forming ringlets at the bottom (the best that I could tell, anyways). IMO they definitely had more of a damaged look. I think your curls are absolutely beautiful now!
First, I want to say how beautiful your hair is!! I really love your videos! I love that you understand everyone's hair is unique. When I embarked on my curly hair journey, one of your videos was the first curly hair video I watched. 😊 When I was very young, I had curly hair. When I was about 4, my hair changed and was mostly straight. It stayed that way for the next 54 years. On a side note, my hair did not change with menopause. I've always had thick hair. Last year, I got pneumonia. I ended up losing over 3/4 of my hair over several months from telogen effluvium. It grew back a little thicker than before, plus, it grew back curly. It has been a learning curve, because before I lost my hair, I could get up in the morning and not brush my hair all day, and you couldn't tell because my hair just fell into place. I have been so in love with my new curls! But I'm not sure if they are going to stay. I guess my hair could still grow back like it was before. I have ringlet curls and some looser cork screw type curls, and many of the curl clumps seem to be starting much farther from the root than yours do. I do have slightly hard water, so that may have something to do with it. I still have some straight hair that didn't fall out that shadows the curls underneath. The curls that have grown out have been strong enough to grab the straight hair and make it curl, as well. The problem has been that the curls are shorter than the longer straight hair, so even styling my hair and diffusing doesn't help the straight hair curl or wave very much, for that matter. Sometimes, I take my hair wand and curl the straight, but that only lasts a few hours. My hair dresser and I decided not to cut it all out all at once so my hair wouldn't be too short. It will take a couple more trims to get all the straight out. Incidentally, before I went to my hairdresser to do something with my hair, I didn't realize, until she told me, that the frizz and poofiness was because my hair had grown out curly. I was brushing all the curl out, everyday. 😂 It will disappoint me if I lose my beautiful curls, but it took me 50 years to accept the hair I had and love it when it was straight. I will still love my hair, no matter how it turns out!
I have a method I use to tighten my curl pattern. For some reason in the fall and winter when there is less humidity my curls just don’t want to spring up to the diameter that they do in the summer. I have 3B/3C curls, but they will dry like 3A. It occurred to me that when I would go to humid areas like parts of Florida my hair always curled up in its tightest formation, so I decided to try hot steam. So now after I blow dry, and I have to make sure to put enough styling product on it so that it doesn't get crazy frizzy, using a hand held fabric steamer I steam all of my hair from roots to tip. I bend my head left, right and forward to make sure the steam hits every part. Its important to be careful not to burn oneself with the hot steam (which I did by accident in the beginning) so I keep the steamer constantly moving while I gently move my hair around to allow for better penetration. It is also important to make sure you get enough steam to touch all of the hair for it to work the best, in the beginning I stopped too early and the curls didn't curl up as much. Once I got the routine down now all of my curls curl up perfectly, and the steam has the added benefit of moisturizing the hair as well. I often then finish with a light application of oil to seal in the moisture on the ends. This also works excellently as a refresher in between washings, so when I take my hair down from the high loose ponytail during sleep I allow the hair to settle a little bit and then use the steamer, and it looks like it was just washed. The steam also re-activates the styling products so you don’t likely need to add more, and this can be done everyday until you wash again. I highly recommend this method, and with a portable steamer it can be taken anywhere and used easily 🙂
You are right about not dwelling about old photos bc I get so sad when I see how different my hair was. I abused it so much with heat and bleach and keratin and in 2019 when I decided to wear it curly one day it wasn’t curling at all. Since then I’ve been just being super careful with it no straightening it and I’m finally starting to see some ringlets come back. I used to literally have people stop me on the street to ask me what I was using for my hair (one product only it was the Paul Mitchell Super Sculpt) there wasn’t any curly hair tutorials I had to figure out on my own what worked for my hair.
I had more medium density and a tighter curl pattern just last year. When I learned of the Denman brush and brush styling, I gave it a try and liked how it looked. However, this year I've definitely noticed my density was reduced and my hair is actually refusing to curl up in spots. I am almost certain that brush styling is to blame, however, I don't think all brushes do this. Specifically looking at the Denman brush, it causes tension on the hair by pulling it and causing it to bounce back. Basically, it straightens the hair. Over time this constant tugging and tension on the hair is most likely what cause this drops in density and loosening of curl pattern. I don't think we need to give up brush styling, I think the best action would be to obtain a brush or even a wide tooth comb that does not apply as much pulling on the hair. I've also noticed that when I use a wide tooth comb to style my curls, I feel like I get more density and over time I think being a lot gentler in my styling routine will help my curls come back.
Yes, I believe that constantly using a brush that applies high amounts of tension on your hair, like the denman, will lead to damage. This was sadly the case with me and my curls.

I had effortless curls back in high school. Throughout my 30s, poor diet/hormones and color damage really took a toll. But since switching my diet to more animal fats and cut out sugar it's getting healthy again. I think the secret is eating eggs everyday🙂
I grew up with straight hair...at least so. My hair started turning curly when I turned 30. I'm now 57, stumbled upon these videos and started following the CG methods for about 6 months and my curls are beautiful and getting better. For years, I put it in a ponytail or styled it straight simply because I had no clue what to do with curly hair. I got rid of all my heat styling products and absolutely love my curls! One myth I found to be untrue is that it's easier to have curl. Nope! 😆
Great information, thank you. I lost most of my hair, following covid. Now, one year later, my curls are slowly getting healthy again. My curl pattern changes regularly since it stopped falling out. It is like getting used to someone else's hair, learning not only how to style very short thin, low density curls but what products to use. I now have very dense medium to coarse strands. I also am post menopause. One good thing is that I use my fingers to style and it has never been easier on wash days. Health and stress and what you eat all play into your hair.
Wow, thats so crazy that covid effected it so much. I've also heard that. It could be due to the impact it has on our immune system and an overall shock to our system.
@@GenaMarie exactly. Telegen effluvium is what it is called. Severe illness, surgery, high stress can cause it. It's a big thing since covid. So many people are affected.
Thank you for this video!!! Ive been going through some changes like density and its been driving me crazy but my hair is also healthier, so this has brought me some relief!
My hair has been wavy my whole life but when I was nine I got cancer and after treatment when my hair grew back it grew back so so curly and I was aware that they probably wouldn’t last and they did for probably like three years and now I have pretty wavy loose curly hair and I’m happy but sometimes I do miss my chemo curls haha
There is some research that puberty can change hair type. That happen for me and for my daughter. I also know several women who when they got pregnant had very different hair after all those hormones. I also know that chemotherapy can change the hair color or texture when it regrows. Great topic for a video!
Started shedding more than normal and my texture also changed. It turns out that is a side effect from COVID on some instances. Two to three months after getting COVID and I am dealing with this. Hopefully it grows back.
Great video! My hair was course until I started coloring my hair and after having covid losing a ton of hair. I don't color my hair any longer working on building my curl pattern back to the way it use to be. Slow process. Monthly clarifying and deep conditioning helps.
Yeah, I just had a bod cut and my curls spring up. Your right about the weight. I seem to struggle still with incorporating protein in my routine to not get straw like feel of curls. Since iv reduced protiens and clarify more often my head sheds less and also breaks less. Good tips Gina 👍
When you move to different places, the water can also affect your hair. When I lived up North, my hair was super soft and moisturized. Moved South and my hair become drier, frizzier. I connected my hair symptoms to the water. Now, it's some years later and my hair has adjusted.
Hi Gena, great video! You covered just about everything that's happened with my hair. My curl pattern was much like yours when I was younger and now it's barely wavy I think mine is do from menopause and age as well as I lived right near the beach and we had perfect water Now I live where it's hot and dry and also have very hard water. The thinning is what bothers me the most as it's very hard to get it looking half way decent 😒
Very interesting video, thanks for your research! My hair has changed a lot as well, I had a lot of hair when I was younger and it did not need much styling (that was pre-TH-cam and I didn't have much pocket money at hand, so I used my older sister's cleansing gel for definition - and it worked! 😋). After some hormonal issues during my 20ies, my hair got a lot thinner and less curly, I often struggle to find the right balance between light products and enough hold. It just shows that we should never take our or anybody else's hair for granted.
used to be 2a/2b with some random ringlets, hormonal shifts in my 30s had lost tons of volume, now its growing back straighter with minoxidil + peppermint oil treatments!
I also believe companies are changing their products too! I know certain products I used back then are not the same nowadays since they are focusing on fast production 😭😭😭
I’ve been waiting for this video!! So happy you made it!! My theory has always been, the damage makes it frizzier, hence curlier! Along with the intermittent straightening. I’m happy you are giving up brush styling, or at least reducing it. It really isn’t good to brush your hair wet at all with tension other than for lightly removing the loose hairs. As far as the iron thing goes, you’re right, it does take a long time to rebuild. You have to be diligent about it, good to take Vitamin C, plant stem cells and trace minerals and I recommend a collagen powder like the one Jennifer Aniston hawks, but organic. If you can afford it, a Capillus laser cap works too. Here’s another tip, use rosemary leaf extract, a few drops in your shampoo, it thickens the hair temporarily. I’m in my 60s so I have age related hair loss, just on the top and the Professional version of Viviscal worked for me along with Rogaine 5% foam for women.
I've always had lots of fine thick hair which was curly wavy with a fairly straight crown. I didn't know it though and had perms in the 80's which seemed to last forever but it was really just my natural curls coming through. Crazy. Now in my early 60's and having done CGM for 5 years or so I love my hair texture. Yes it's gotten less dense it seems and the stress of covid gave me a case of telegen effluvium but some of that loss is growing back and I'm pleased to say that my hair still grows very fast and will hit my waist sometime in 2023. I'm also one of those who has to avoid cutting it short to get more curl spring. If I do that I'll just have straight hair. I really need to try a chelating shampoo for the hard water here but I do have a shower filter to remove chlorine which is good for your hair. Thanks for your videos and your willingness to be vulnerable with your experience which helps us all understand our hair better.
Thanks so much for this video! When I was in puberty I had like 3b curls which turned more into 3a curls in my early to mid twenties. But now, in my end 20s my hair turned completely wavy and it takes ao much effort to just get them a little bit curlier although they were always natural to form by themselves… it was only when I realised that this drastic change occurred when I started taking the birth control pill. 5 years and now I’m finally off of it. I really wonder if my hair will become more curly again now after a few years… :(
Due to aging I switched from 3b/3c hair to 2b/2c. I miss the curls a lot, even tho I also look good with waves. Also it is a lot healthier now than it was 6 years ago, so I will try the leave-it-alone technique you mentioned. But it‘s hard to accept when the curls are gone I had all my life. But that‘s the way it is I guess
When I was little I had pretty little ringlets. After I reached puberty my hair changed to have extremely messy curls. Some are more wavy while others are coils. Some are small while others are large. It’s frustratingly bizarre. I’m now 30 and still don’t know how to deal with it.
Very interesting! Thank you. I had no idea about the difference in follicles in relation to curliness. And I have a diffuser, but I usually air dry -- I would have thought the opposite was true about which encourages curls.
Lately I had been using a wet brush to help distribute product in my hair, but I think that just stretches my hair too much. Ive gone back to my trusty wide toothed comb and have learned my lesson. My hair turns out so much better now. For reference, I have long, low density (thank you menopause😒) 2b/2c fine, medium and coarse hair. I’ve been experimenting with mousses, gels, detangling sprays, leave-ins etc etc. Haven’t quite found the perfect combo or product yet.
I only started looking after my curly hair after I moved to a hard water area - I'd love to see what it looks like in a softer water area (hoping to move soon)
Puberty can change your hair texture totally. I've known people who had stick straight hair until their preteen years and then it basically went curly overnight.
My hair was always stick straight until about 10 years ago when a medication I was taking for mental health made it curly. I stopped the meds several years ago & now it's more loose waves.
Hey I just came across this video and I subscribed instantly!! I had pin straight hair my whole childhood and then around 13 may hair started getting wavy and frizzy. I had no idea what to do with my new hair since I never had curly hair before so I would just blow dry it or straighten it out for years I did that. Then I decided to try and use products to help my curly hair and over time my hair has gotten curlier especially when I get my hair cut in layers to help the curls bounce up and look fuller and thicker. Thanks for this video, it is interesting that I am not the only one that has changes in their hair. I didn't realize that hormones could change your hair.
When I was little, I always had almost straight (2A) hair. But when I was 11 (right around when I got my first period), my hair suddenly got curly, probably because of the estrogen. When I was 12 to 13, it looked like the top half of my hair had 2B waves and the bottom that was still growing out was 2A, and all of it was a frizzy mess because I was treating it like it was straight. My morning hair routine at that time was to brush it out with a boar bristle brush and then put about a nickel-sized amount of argan oil to my whole head of long hair. No one in my family has or has ever had hair quite as curly as mine, so no one could help me take care of or style my hair. When I was almost 15, my mom let me get my hair cut to about shoulder length, and that allowed me to get sort of a fresh start and learn how to take care of my hair (it still wasn't good, but it was a whole lot better). I kept my hair about that length or shorter throughout the rest of high school until, in my first year of college, I decided I was bored with it and I wanted to grow it out and donate it. I had planned to get it cut the summer of 2020, but it didn't pan out for obvious reasons, so I was stuck with super long hair (that I didn't want) with severe split ends (it didn't help that I still had an inch or two of highlights from two years before that I was growing out). Your videos really helped me learn how to actually take care of my hair and make my curls actually look good (or at least as good as they could look with how damaged they were lol). Finally, in 2021 (when I was 20), I donated my hair and got it cut to the short length you can see in my profile pic (the haircut I always wanted) and I have healthy and beautiful 3A curls. I probably won't have curly hair forever, based on how my mom's hair changed from wavy (probably 2B or C at its curliest) to barely wavy (I would guess 2A, but she blows it out and won't let me style her hair like curly hair even just for fun) when she went through menopause, but I'm making the most of my curls while I have them.
You can change your curl pattern by training. I have and I'm 44. Also, temperature helps. Looser curls add heat, tighter add cold. I would finger train my curls then put my head in the shower and add cold water and scrunch it. It went from 2c to 3c.
In the past I would comb my hair after washing it. Now I comb my hair through and get the knots out BEFORE washing my hair. Then gently towel dry and just leave it without combing. It gives me more curls. I noticed when I combed it through after washing it loosened them to more like waves. I don’t like to heat style and don’t like the weight and feel of products in my hair.
I grew up with pin straight hair. No curling iron, not even with products from the hairdresser (and styled by a hairdresser), could hold my hair in waves or curls for more than 1-2 hours. I was so sad that I couldn't have any waves since my mum has some beautiful curls (3A/3B). I guess when I was around 14-15-ish I started to see a change. One side started to puff out and felt frizzy and if I didn't comb it right after washing it would literally look like I licked a socket. I still treated it like straight hair since I believed my hair can't change patterns. That's also when I had to change from washing once every 1-2 weeks to daily, since it just got so oily so fast (after 8-12hrs it already started to look oily). I hated my hair. It looked oily and wasn't really straight anymore but something "weird". I also went to doctors (for my skin too), but noone could help me and/or made my problems worse. It probably were hormones changing my hair if I think about it. Now, at 28, I'm at 2B to 3A hair. It didn't change in a short time but over all the years. Every year my hair was a little bit more wavy until I had my first "real" curls. Also I "couldn't" wear my hair shorter because it just had a life on it's own. With long hair, I could maintain my straight hair for longer (probably because of the weight, if have fine but a lot of hair). For a long time I could comb my hair after washing and it would've stayed straight, then I needed some extra detangling products and oil and now I could blow it out straight and it will start to form waves up to curls after some time. Facinating how hair can change like that. 😄
mixed girl here. use to have super curly kinky hair. it was super crispy and I was bullied for it so I straightened it but stopped caring like a year later. I got the big chop and had right ringlets for that year and then all of a sudden it just went pin straight before I ever started bleaching and dying it...and since then it's been super straight from age 15 into my 30s. Maybe it was puberty? I have no idea. I take as best of care as I can. The only thing I can think is my hormones, aging and maybe my health issues as I have chronic stomach issues now and also stress 🙃
Very interesting video thank you for all the valuable information 😊 I suffer from a very severe iron deficiency for years but all Doctors I've been seing have no idea what the cause of it might be. May I ask what the cause of your iron deficiency was?
Uterine fibriods 😔 They cause heavy periods. I had major blood loss in early 2020 and then changed my birth control to treat them. It's now more stable but I think the new pill has caused more hair thinning.
When I was a kid I had pin straight hair. I got pregnant with my daughter when I was 25, my hair became wavy. I’m 43 and now as my hair is growing longer I am getting curls. Some of my hair is still super straight, but most of it is curly. It’s wild.
I had curly hair that everyone would tell me they wish they had .y hair..but I hated it... When I finally feel in love with my curly hair, I lost my curls and it became dry and brittle..plus I started to lose my hair and it became very thin. I was taking medicine and iv infusion as well and it think that is what caused my hair loss and it to lose my curls. Now , my health is getting better, and taking vitamins and also taking Briogeo B Well vitamins
I clicked on your video bc I've wanted to know why my bone straight hair started to curl. It's very odd. My hairdresser pointed it out to me about 2 years ago... showing me an underneath curl. It has only gotten curlier since then. And I have NO idea what to do with my hair now. 50 years of naturally very straight hair, now this! I'm having fun with the new curl, but just no idea what to do with it.
I’m pretty sure my curl problem is hormonal but it is so annoying. My hair has always been 3b curls however pregnancy would always loosen my curl to almost straight, my back story is my hair was pretty straight before puberty. Now I’m 46 and peri menopause and I have the 3b curls except now I have random straight pieces all over my head and right at my temple area. It doesn’t look very nice because it’s like I have all these long straight strands longer than my actual curls and they aren’t in chunks It’s bizarre. I’m considering just wearing it straight which I never do. I have tried so many different techniques and nothing has fixed the straightness issues. It just ends up looking messy. This all started about when I turned 40.
3A curls as a toddler, 4A as a kid, currently in my 18-24 stage of life- my hair covers the entire spectrum. My hair is straight, it is curly, it is kinky, and it is wavy. There is no heat damage & there isn't any product in it to weigh it down. My hair texture is very odd, and the more I grow it out, the more it seems to just do what it feels like doing. I'm very mixed, though, I just look light-brown from the outside. My hair genetics are just becoming a handful because instead of choosing one, it's opted to take every ethicity I'm mixed with & slapped it on top of my scalp. I like it because it's unique, but I can't go to hairdressers because they can never give me a style I'm comfortable with having. It's always 'just' ok (imo, as everyone else is always amazed & asks me who did my hair; very annoying). Does anyone else have these wildly varied hair textures? How do you manage it? I can't deal with this nest on my head. 🥲
Mine keeps falling out because of stress since 2018. It’s really hard because it was waist length, thick 3A/B curls. I’m still so heartbroken. I don’t know what to do anymore so I just live with it.
Great informative post!!! Can you speak a little more about iron deficiency and hair? I didn’t know this affects hair, and I think this is one of my issues.
Yes! Basically iron is essential to create red blood cells which carry oxygen throughout the body to vital organs and our hair follicles. Oxygen and blood flow is what you need for healthy hair growth.
Thanks Gena for this great video. I appreciate your insight. I had a totally unrelated question, do you get a Deva cut, ouidad cut it a different type? Thanks
I would have never considered that I had curly hair but 5 yrs ago I had multiple surgeries and lost a ton of hair. I started noticing that my hair was frizzy when I styled it my regular way, I couldn’t figure out what changed. I started taking a lot of vitamins and biotin to help with my hair loss, I was deficient in B12, D, zinc and iron. Then Covid happened, I was home everyday, not going anywhere, so after a shower I’d let my hair air dry, I noticed it was curly! I started following you and trying new products and I’m wearing it curly now. I still have a lot to learn, my hair is fine and curlier the longer I let it get but it’s thin also, so it doesn’t always look the best long. I appreciate all of your help, I’m totally embracing my curls!
Talk about changing curls ... this Grandma grew up in Michigan! In winter, with the furnace on and the air dry, my fine hair goes straight. Now, living in Florida with the humidity it curls .... BUT jump on a cruise to the Caribbean and you'd think those curl would be happy... NOPE ... the dehumidifiers on the ship have my hair limp again! Go figure 🤔
Five years ago i had 3b curls... then i got pregnant😄 in pregnancy my hair grows out straight. When i gave birth the hair grows curly again... i have been pregnant three times now... looks fun thou... i think its because these relaxing hormones witch make al the muscles and fascies soft
I come from a family of finer curly hair. I get so frustrated with it at times! After having a baby I lost lots of year during the post natal shedding and I still don’t feel it’s fully returned back to what it was 3 years later, even being pregnant again not excited for the fall out coming soon! 😢
I actually believe than is not just follicle shape that is responsible for curl pattern. I think curl pattern is made of follicle shape, thickness of strand and the sulfide bonds in the hair, here’s why! My curls are loose however at the root they can curl a lot and when the hair is better treated it curls a lot, but it doesn’t last, because my hair just isn’t strong (I describe It as lacking structure), it’s fine too. My hair looks like aging hair, it’s weaker and loose despite it’s actually pattern being probably in the type 4 category, I feel it lacks sulfur. The reason why I believe this is because I have random strands, which keep on multiplying, of very thick, dark Afro textured hair. When I have used some hair loss treatments some finer hairs started to grow like that and sometimes I see strands than shed whose ends are coily and thick and root is fine and loose. So yeah I believe the strength of our hair from the root plays a huge part in curl pattern and that’s also genetic or can be caused by smth. Like there’s people with the same follicle shape, who take care of their hair, but one shrinks more and the other is very curly still but naturally stretched, yk? That’s part of all the curl diversity Btw in my family we have a lot of different curl patterns, from Afro to loose, however I think we all have very curly hair just some have weak hair, because again it can curly A LOT a the roots and just naturally grow straighter. I always have a cousin than had wavy lightish hair until 16 and then her hair grew black and very curly and thick.
Yes, I read about this also! There seems to be research that supports both, so it could be both like you said. I also have random very coarse wiry hair is all over.
I had very tight curls all my life and then I started dying my hair blonde I'm not sure if that's what did it but now I have like beachy hair which I love. . Just odd. I have always taken very good care of my hair though and even though it was blonde I never used bleach on it.
My hair became curly about the time I became 60. Never had curly hair, maybe some waves. I have a difficult time styling it because I don’t really know what to do with this much curl.
I've found that using different types of gels. For example, using the Ouidad advanced climate vs a light hold gel like twist by ouidad, I have much better results with the Ouidad climate control. Better looking curls and ringlets with it. It's interesting to compare gels and how they can help enhance hair
Thank you so much for this video. I am still on the start of my journey, and it's been frustrating at times. I always hated my curls, and did anything to straighten or hide them in ponytails. Sadly, I'm still mainly in ponytails because my curls aren't quite glam-worthy yet. Any suggestions?
I used to have the most amazing ringlets, they would last for a whole week with no brush styling needed. They were so healthy and amazing! Maybe a year and a half ago I started noticing that I had to style my hair much more. My hair straightens out starting on day 2. It’s so fine, that even with strong hold gel I can’t make it last at all. I also have an outrageous amount of hair that falls out, like in clumps. Or it will just break off when I touch it. It makes me so sad. I try to embrace my new hair, but it feels completely wrong. I have never had to deal with such a drastic change in such a little time. I’m guessing it could be the birth control change that happened about 2 years ago. Probably time to talk to a doctor, cause these symptoms just seems weird.
My mom got her curls back after she quit Yasmin birth control, she had been on it so long she just thought it was thinning. It can absolutely be the medication.
i have high density thick 2b-2c hair and when i was younger it was more of a thicker 1c so my hair is getting more texture but whats also confusing is shorter pieces of hair that i have will spiral in some sort of 3b type pattern and it really looks weird because i do have shorter layers etc and they will just be spiralled while the rest of my hair is wavy
Thyroid meds !!!
@@janetmcgue2313 thyroid meds? What do you mean? Do they affect curl patterns?
@@janetmcgue2313 wait, really? Rats.
Me too! I don't know if it was when I had my kids or what.
I like more the less tight ones
As someone who also had a iron deficiency. Your hair is going to become so much fuller.
Did it take your hair a long time? That is so encouraging!
Gena Marie yes it definitely took longer then I had liked. Though It's likely because it takes so long for hair to become long enough to be noticed. The difference I feel was most noticeable around a year, year and a half. For my hairline, it was noticed faster. With new growth and smaller baby hairs.
@@rachellep2581what did u do to fix ur iron? i’ve been trying everything
Products like what flatten the hair? Thx❤
O
Can you give us the name of it?
@@dirtclassy tks 👍
Thyroid condition was a HUGE factor for me on top of Anemia! Once I started taking Levothyroxine for my thyroid daily my density tripped within a year it’s so insane! Hope this helps someone out there! ❤
Was it curly or straight before?
What was it like before thyroid and after thyroid pills?
So interesting!! Thanks for sharing! 💕
I also wanted to add that I have gotten a shower head filter since finding out about the hard water & I feel like it has helped so much!
I also changed birth control pills around the same time mine changed, so that's likely the biggest influence. Hormones are crazy!
You should get a shower water filter!
Chemo curls are usually temporary, though you may be one of the rare cases where it is permanent.
Wow, thats so crazy! Thank you for sharing. That just goes to show that hormonal changes can make hair either curly or straight, not just go straight.
Crazy!
My story is very similar! People who have known me all my life now say, I never knew you had curly hair! Neither did I!
How was it with homonal therapy? What kind of hormones?
Thanks
Thank you! That is so true! I should have mentioned that because I've noticed more spirals as well closer to the root.
First, I want to say how beautiful your hair is!! I really love your videos! I love that you understand everyone's hair is unique. When I embarked on my curly hair journey, one of your videos was the first curly hair video I watched. 😊
When I was very young, I had curly hair.
Growing up, I had curly hair but it was more on the 2b / 2c wavy now it’s more like a 3b / 3c.
And I had no curls at all. 😁 My waves came after the first pregnancy and increased after the second.
Does this mean the denman brush causes damage/breakage or did you not experience this with the brush?
Yes, I believe that constantly using a brush that applies high amounts of tension on your hair, like the denman, will lead to damage. This was sadly the case with me and my curls.

@@lilliantaber3619 damn okey thank you for the information!
My hair texture has changed back to when I was a child. I am taking better care of it and no wash and go
There is some research that puberty can change hair type.
I'm learning a lot! I'll have to watch this a few times.
The before and after photos of your hair are striking. Looks like completely different hair type.
Great video! My hair was course until I started coloring my hair and after having covid losing a ton of hair. I don't color my hair any longer working on building my curl pattern back to the way it use to be. Slow process. Monthly clarifying and deep conditioning helps.
We love these curl tips! 💕🙌
woah hello..🤐
My curl pattern was much like yours when I was younger and now it's barely wavy
I think mine is do from menopause and age as well as I lived right near the beach and we had perfect water
Now I live where it's hot and dry and also have very hard water. The thinning is what bothers me the most as it's very hard to get it looking half way decent 😒
Very informative. I appreciate all your videos.
Great video! Very educational, thank you!
used to be 2a/2b with some random ringlets, hormonal shifts in my 30s had lost tons of volume, now its growing back straighter with minoxidil + peppermint oil treatments!
I love this video. I had super curly hair as a baby. Stick straight hair from pike 4-13 and then variation waves since then. Its such a weird thing!
I really wonder if my hair will become more curly again now after a few years… :(
I truly loved this video!!! You let us see a lot of your personality and more !! Keep it up girl!!!! 😉
I’m also using the theradome and it has helped thicken my hair a little.
Thanks for subscribing! Happy to help you with your new curls 🥰
Your curls and hair color are 😍 lovely
Thank you!
I think it changed because of constant care and the pattern is styled daily. Also, some people change their hair because thinning or hormonal
Very interesting video thank you for all the valuable information 😊
I suffer from a very severe iron deficiency for years but all Doctors I've been seing have no idea what the cause of it might be.
Very informative video. Can you recommend a good hard water shampoo and bonding products for damaged hair? Thanks
Yep, I included product links in the video description box, below the video 😊
Actually Everyone's hair changes every seven years. I just learned that recently. And my head of different textures proves it.....🤗
Mine keeps falling out because of stress since 2018. It’s really hard because it was waist length, thick 3A/B curls. I’m still so heartbroken. I don’t know what to do anymore so I just live with it.
I noticed that my hair curls more when I go to a warmer country (I live in Canada) and I sometimes go to the south. It's all due to humidity levels.
Go figure 🤔
Do you color your hair? If so, please share the brand and color you use. Thank you. 😀
That’s part of all the curl diversity
Btw in my family we have a lot of different curl patterns, from Afro to loose, however I think we all have very curly hair just some have weak hair, because again it can curly A LOT a the roots and just naturally grow straighter.
It can absolutely be the medication.
it was 3b, i changed my hair routine and it turned to 2b, I discovered shea moisture and they r 3b again!
Gina is “ squish to condish” a real think ? Is really doing something good for ur hair, I am so confused about that
i have high density thick 2b-2c hair and when i was younger it was more of a thicker 1c so my hair is getting more texture but whats also confusing is shorter pieces of hair that i have will spiral in some sort of 3b type pattern and it really looks weird because i do have shorter layers etc and they will just be spiralled while the rest of my hair is wavy
I had beautiful wavy hair that was so manageable and now my hair is straight/waves in a few strands and unmanageable. I hate how my hair is now.
