"Voice of Joseph Campbell" from Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth.
For more on the Hero's Journey and its influence on Star Wars ►► • Star Wars and The Hero...
In 2011, the character of Miles Morales was introduced to Marvel Comics. But it wasn't until 2018 that the character gained widespread appeal through the release of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse - which went on to win the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
Aside from being a wonderful addition to the Marvel pantheon, this modern incarnation of Spider-Man is also an excellent example of the Hero's Journey, a storytelling structure written about by Joseph Campbell in his 1949 book "The Hero with a Thousand Faces". This mythic structure has been instrumental in the success of many major comic books and Hollywood adventures - including Star Wars.
In this video, we break down how Miles Morales's Hero's Journey takes shape.

While I grew up with Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man, I've enjoyed every iteration for what they offer. However, none has stolen the spotlight quite like Miles Morales, who I feel is a worthy successor to the web-slinging throne.
What do you think? Who's your favorite Spider-Man? Let me know in the comments below!

I’m unfamiliar with Patreon but would love to support your channel. What are “creations”? Example $50 is 11 creations.
As an actor and writer I want to make sure I’m understanding things fully and would be extremely happy to pay you for an hour phone call. You’re an amazing teacher and the only place I know to find a few simple answers.
My questions simply involve understanding the shadow and the mentor roles better. I try to dissect other films myself and feel as though I don’t fully understand the roles.
Odd examples... Mean Girls. Is Rachel’s character the shadow? Can the antagonist be the shadow? In Die Hard is the cop on the walkie the shadow or the mentor?
I’d love to pay you for your time so I can get this straight in my mind. I’m writing a film about the Seminole Wars and want to give it my best.
The Seminoles are the only tribe to never sign a treaty and be sovereign, the war left them down to 300 hiding in the swamp, now the tribe is worth billions because they never surrendered during the Seminole Wars... which was also the largest slave rebellion in American history,
Regardless, thanks for the amazing content!

Hi Mark. Thanks for your interest in supporting my work!
Patreon is a great crowdfunding site that lets you choose how much you'd like to contribute *per creation*. This means that whatever tier you contribute at ($1, $5, etc) that's how much you will be charged every time I release a video. Patreon lets you set monthly limits, so if I decide to go crazy and release a dozen videos a month, you only get charged up to the limit you set. :)
All of my Patreon reward tiers give you access to a community that would be the perfect spot to explore questions like the ones you asked. I'm on there almost every day discussing current events, latest releases, and industry trends. It's a pretty cool place where you can chat with artists who make frequent contributions to Off Screen, people actively working in the game and film industries, and other professionals I've connected with over the years!
It's constantly evolving, and I'm always open to new ideas.
In the meantime, I can highly recommend the following books:
      1) The Hero with a Thousand Faces by Joseph Campbell
      2) King, Warrior, Magician, Lover by Robert Moore & Douglas Gillette
Both are easy to read and may help with learning how to identify different Jungian archetypes.
There are a lot of fantastic content creators exploring the Shadow as well. I'm sure a TH-cam search will get you some good results, but here's one that may start you down the right path:
      th-cam.com/video/SFXAeCsRCpE/w-d-xo.html
      Cheers!

Very rarely movies I watch get to invoke so many emotions but this one was different when the og spiderman died even tho I knew he had to die in order for miles to take his place it really saddened me close to tears. Seeing your favourite character die so that a new one had to be formed really pains you emotionally. The second very favourite moment was the leap of faith. That very moment was literally a life and death situation coz in order for miles to know if hes ready he had to be willing to risk his life for something that he believed in and that truly was one of the best scenes I have ever seen in a spiderman movie. Not only the way it was portrayed but how it looked overall. Hands down one of the best spiderman origin story movies.

Cool. I haven't seen the hero's journey in Spider-verse explained in such detail and clarity before. Hope to see more from you! Small criticism: the flashes of Star Wars were distracting while adding little imo.

    • @OffScreen
      @OffScreen  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Thank you for your feedback! Because of the "glitch" effect in Spider-verse, it was the only film I felt I could get away with such edits to tie back into my Star Wars analysis video and demonstrate that all Hero's Journeys are ultimately the same.
There's plenty more content and Hero's Journey breakdowns coming in the future! With less jarring edits. 😉

You know, I was thinking about this movie a lot ever since I watched Spider-Man - No way home. While I like that new movie, I do not love it the way I love 'Into the spiderverse'. I think you pinpointed the reason for this, at least for me. The moment Peter gains his mentors during 'No way home' comes far too late into the narrative and is played more as a fan-service reveal more than a turning point.
This is shown by the contrast in 'Into the spiderverse' - Miles has time to learn from his mentors, learn about their values, acknowledge them as his teachers - there is a genuine bond between them. When they say they understand his pain after uncle Arron dies, you feel his words do mean something to him, because he respects and admires these other spider-people.
By contrast, in 'No Way Home', we actually start from other Spideys expressing sympathy to him, and only AFTER that he has time to learn about them. The scene when the express sympathy works only if you know these guys from the other movies and has fond memories of them. I do not think I like that.
Still, that only confirms, that 'Into the spiderverse' is a really thought-out movie.
