  • How To Explain Being Fired In A Job Interview - Sample Answers and Examples to “Why did you leave your last job?” question. Good answers if you were fired or if your contract has been terminated. Did you know that the vast majority of employees have been fired at least once in their career? If your employment has been terminated, you will most likely need to explain this situation to your potential employers. And without having a strategy behind your answer, this part of the job interview is very intimidating. In this video I will give you a 4 step strategy of how to explain your termination during the interview. And if you stick with me till the end, I also give examples of responses for different situations of being fired, which will help you formulate your own interview answer.
    1.Don’t be embarrassed or scared to talk about it. It’s easier say rather than do it. But just think for a second, you have already gone through this probably traumatic experience. And beating yourself up due to being fired or doubting yourself will NOT let you move forward. It will keep reviving those negative memories and feelings.Everyone deserves a job they love. And you deserve your chance to be happy at work. You can’t let the past prevent you from this.
    Own it, having been fired or terminated experience and be natural about it. The interviewer will feel exactly how YOU feel about being fired.
    2. Focus on positive aspects and on what you’ve learned. Your termination has been a learning experience. Instead of focusing on how difficult and negative this experience has been, be positive about the fact that you made through this challenge. And you did it the best you possibly could. Remember all the good things you have learned at this job and mention them. Including a “lesson learned” sentence in your answer will show your awareness and adaptability. And turning something negative into an asset will demonstrate your sincerity and maturity...

      We indeed can say whatever we feel like saying, but being truthful about it is important. The world is actually very small, especially in certain industries, they can eventually find out through "backdoor" references and building a solid professional relationship requires honesty. Also for one's peace of mind!
      If you use something along the line to the examples I give, you don't exactly say that you've been fired, but you are not telling a lie either. But of course it's down to everyone's concrete situation! Thanks for your feedback!

    My most recent employment ended even when I was getting the work done and correctly. The my past employer decided I would be a better fit for another industry. He sort of gave me an explanation that didn't make much sense. A few days after I left he advertised for someone more experienced. I'm an entry level employee and I wasn't getting much training from there. The job only lasted 2 months, so I'm nervous going into interviews and explaining why I left.

      You should not be worried at all. Every employee has been fired from work at least once, just get your "reason" straight and stick to it during interviews. Even if you say that the position wasn't the right fit for you, most hiring managers would understand and wouldn't dig further.

      I wouldn't go very much into details, unless they've seen your record and insist on finding out more. What was the context of "falsifying documents"? Even if I don't know the full story, it could have been something which you've been pressured to do by the upper management.

    How do you handle an interviewer who wants to spend more than a minute on a job termination? I tried to move on based on a similar response you provided in your video and she wouldn't let it go.

    • @myemmotion
      @myemmotion  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Did you feel comfortable during her questions? Was she pushing too hard? It's obvious that she didn't find the answer sufficient and depending on what your impressions on them were, you can decide if you tell them more or not. If they come across understanding that's good, but most of the times such noisy interviewers are not a good sign.

Im given bad equipment to work with and told ive got to do what the others are doing with better equipment and she says that i am just making up excuses. I have felt so low. Im using these feelings to develop my resume rather than when the sh.....t hits the fan. Im 66 and have never been fired it will effect my pension that i can draw in 5 months and prevent me paying my debts so i can retire. I know i cant achieve what my toxic boss expects. Perhaps on Wednesday when i find out what is going to happen i will go to her boss. I wont have anything to lose. I have told her im not happy with her screaming at me, i feel disrespected and it would have helped if she had notified me that things had changed. She just reflect on what she had said and told me all the managers are in agreement with her. What ever do these people get out of being like this? Yes why would i even want to be there. • @myemmotion
      @myemmotion  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Anu! You know the first thing to keep in mind during job interviews is that you are not there to open up about your personal life. Any personal issues which you have gone through should remain personal, unless you've already known these people for a while and they already have a clear image of you as a professional.
      You don't have to be fake at all. But an hour job interview is all what you have to build a certain image of yourself as a professional, in the eyes of your interviewers. I'd always suggest focusing mostly on professional aspects of your profile. And when you are explaining the gaps be completely natural and genuine, but don't lower your guard. You are not there to make friends (not during the first time you see them), later on you can always explain all the personal aspects you'd like to explain, once they get to know you!

As you mentioned to be positive and donot tell much about the firing process, I followed your advice during my interviews. These are great answers, but none of them really work for me situation. I was fired from my only full-time job after 15 years. I can’t say that I’m used to something else or that from Day 1 the fit wasn’t right, because if it’s my only job I can’t be used to anything else, and if the fit wasn’t right the next question becomes, “Why did you stay for 15 years?” Any suggestions on how I can phrase my response for that? If it helps, technically I wasn’t fired, my position was eliminated as a “Reduction In Force,” but as my boss once told me, there are never any real RIF’s. I don’t know why I was fired, and to my face they told me it was nothing personal, just part of a departmental reorganization. They also said they’d give me a reference if I need one, but I prefer not to use a reference from someone who fired me if I can possibly help it.

    So ... I'm supposed to tell potential employers that I got fired from my previous job? Why would I want to do that?

    I asked you acquestion on another account, I have one more. Do you recommend putting these responses in the application or leaving that as a discussion point if you are sure for a phone interview? I do not wish to "lie" on the application. Thoughts? Thanks again for the great content!

      Hi there! I really wouldn't advice you leaving this written, it's always better explaining it during the interview or any other direct conversation with an employer. This isn't the easiest part of the interview to address, so trying to do so in a written form makes it even more complicated. You are very welcome by the way, thanks for your kind feedback.
      There is another video where I address how to explain "why did you leave your last job" question, it might also be helpful: th-cam.com/video/Ls6-lG-YNLc/w-d-xo.html
