I think Maury Muehleisen, the young guitarist that with his beautiful tones coloured Croces songs, also deserves credit. He died with Jim Croce at that fateful airplanecrash in 1973.

If you zero in on Maury's playing you can see this guy was an extraordinary guitarist. What a loss of two great talents..R.I.P Maury and Jim.

I thought that was the best line in the song, because it showed his appreciation to the operator, and that he was going to move on.

He was inspired to write this because of the Dear John letters his buddies were getting when he was in the army. Such a kind and talented man lost too soon.

One thing that sets you apart in the field of music reactors is your sophisticated appreciation for excellent lyrics. You're right about these lyrics, and on relisten you will see how every phrase in the chorus reveals the push-pull in his mind between the story he wants to tell himself (he's getting over her) and the reality (he's not.) I love your Joni Mitchell reactions for the same reason. Thank you.

I was almost 7 when he died & I remember where I was when my sister told me he died. She was a teenager & I used to listen to his songs with her. Time in a Bottle is a song he wrote when he found out his wife was pregnant with his son AJ. AJ sings it now... If that doesn't make you cry, you're not human. "I'll Have to Say I Love You in a Song" is incredible.

Jim was a master storyteller. He brings out the emotions of the songs; love, longing, nostalgia. He also had a great sense of humor and wrote songs about funny characters: Bad, Bad, Leroy Brown (based on someone he knew), Rapid Roy (That Stock Car Boy), You Don't Mess Around With Jim, Roller Derby Queen (my favorite), etc. He left us way too soon, but he left us so many great songs. RIP, Jim. September 30, 2024 will be 51 years since he passed away and he is still very much missed and thought about.

Jim Croce was one of a kind. His lyrics are so well written, as if you can see yourself saying it just that way. Or wish you could. He touched on things that the everyman could identify with, from experience, and so his songs always hit home. And such wonderful melodies, the vocal arrangements with Maury on those amazing harmonies, just the perfect embellishment to Jim's lead. They seemed so effortless, yet so perfectly performed. I remember the day we lost Jim and Maury, on my way to Jr. high school in the morning and listening to the radio. He had become such an icon in that short time upon achieving chart success, we were all in shock. He worked so many years to get to that breakthrough, then was gone so quickly. Imagine what his legacy could have been had he been writing and performing for a few more decades!

During the time that this was written, most operators didn't actually sit at a circuit board physically moving plugs/cords. They ran the switching systems with electronic control systems while wearing headsets. They were assigned to regions, rather than localities as the early operators were assigned. They served the same function, but on a larger and faster scale, with much of it semi-automated.

Jim was an amazing storyteller. Some of his songs were upbeat and funny, but some are so heartbreaking. I cried the day he died. There will never be another like him.😢

My favorites from Jim are One Less Set of Footsteps, an upbeat breakup song, the Chuck Barry-esk Rapid Roy, and Lover's Cross, about retaining dignity and sense as the reason for breaking up. So many of his songs charted after he died, the list goes on.🧓🎭🎸🪕🎻🏆💖

Everyone is asking you to react to Time in a bottle. All I’m going to say is that you have tissues close at hand. I was around 12 years old when he came on the scene, and I fell in love with his singing, writing and musical presentation. Approximately a year and a half later he was gone. They played this song and TIAB on the FM radio for hours; I laid in my bed listening to the tribute, in tears, until I finally fell asleep. I was an instant admirer of his talent. I’ll be 65 this year and still remember my complete adoration for that man and his music. Thanks for the memories.

I was told as a little kid of the early 70s that Operators were ringing Jim's phone off the hook, when this song was released, because they were so touched. He had to get an unlisted number. Operators were typically female, and it's said this song won a lot of their hearts. I've been wondering for about 50 years now if that story was true.

The most incredible lyric in 'Operator' is "You can keep the dime." It leaves you thinking there should be more to the lyric until you realize there just isn't anything else to say. That brilliance was just plain snuffed out. In MHO, he didn't write or perform a bad song and most were brilliant! 😒⛅😶‍🌫

Look how much meaning you've extracted just from the first verse and one chorus. That's Croce's songwriting genius! Very natural-sounding lines, something you can imagine someone saying, yet they convey so much in such little space!

Jim Croce was the ultimate storyteller! In addition to the beautiful songs already mentioned there's a whole list of "character" stories: Rapid Roy, Roller Derby Queen, Speed Ball Tucker, Hardtime Losin' man, A Good Time Man, Top Hat Bar& Grill, Workin' at the Car Wash Blues & a couple others that slip my mind after 50 years! Check some of them out!
