Why Some Cops Think They're The Punisher

  • This is a brief video on why cops are wearing The Punisher's logo. I had wanted to go into a few other things, such as how a certain right wing militia also used the logo, though I was worried it would have gotten a bit off track.
For the record, I do enjoy The Punisher as a character in limited amounts, but I've always found the fandom around the character to be problematic. Some of the comments from police and military personnel in particular were worrying. I only shared a few in this video, but far too many people see this morally grey (at best) character as some ultimate arbiter of right and wrong. The idea of a deeply flawed man somehow being perfect at dispensing final justice seems like wish fulfillment in a lot of ways, so I can understand why someone would want to believe that. I think it would be better for people to raise their aspirations a little higher though, looking at character who reshape the world, instead of transforming themselves into something above it all.
For such a short video, this one sure has a lot of links.

As the past few weeks proved, the U.S. military is not the police, and both National Guard and active duty let that be known. Our military is not perfect, but this is not their mess, and they wont fix it like the sociopath cops and politicians wanted them to by using military grade lethal force which is the only mode the military has.

    • @JackOKnives
      @JackOKnives 4 ปีที่แล้ว +20

@@Scooter_Alice It's a little more complicated than that. The official stance of the police in every precinct is that the Punisher is a murderous psychopath who needs to be locked away in a very dark hole. As far back as I've been reading the character though, there have been cops that root for Frank and willfully turn a blind eye or drag their feet in investigating his actions. This gets even more complicated by the fact that people like Nick Fury tacitly endorse his actions every time they decide he's a useful violent psychopath and sic him on some international criminal in the name of creating plausible deniability for SHIELD. The Punisher is basically an action movie protagonist in a superhero setting, so the narrative contrives to make his actions justified in the moment, but his battle is as never-ending as Superman's (and much more prone to spark street wars).

Policing as an institution was founded upon hunting down freed slaves. “Civil servant” is the line they came up with to justify sticking around once that job became obsolete-they continued hunting down black people and enslaving them, just in prisons instead of plantations. A person who knows only personal sacrifice for the benefit of the greater good that he’ll never get to see. This is why it resonates with military and cops. It’s a direct correlation. Characters that resonate with us do because of experiences. I don’t believe most people who don the skull have ever read the punisher, they take the surface of what he is and adopt it. Giving the state a monopoly on violence was the best decision to limit violent crime our society has ever made, if people attempted to revenge themselves (like the hole point of the Punisher) there would be escalation and perpetuation. A lot of laws are attempting to prevent victimless crimes so that’s stupid but poo pooing the whole situation is woefully ungrateful to the state of affairs we’re experiencing

See the 2015 German movie "Look whose back" where Hitler time travels from WW2. The movie is satirical but I thought that the fasch would embrace it because It sort of glorified Hitler from time to time and made it seem like his worldview is exactly what Germany needs to succeed. Later the youtube comment sections proved my dread. It's probably cult classic in the alt right circles right now. So I don't think racist comedies work no matter what because the ethno-nationalists can't comprehend satire and will use it as propaganda to recruit kids. There is also black face and lots of anti muslim stuff there, and the imaginary Hitler calls them pests -_-

As in the character? He doesn't care, he ay offer up that kind of rationalization, but at the end of the day he's a man who feels a *need* to fight a war because it's all he knows, all he cares about and it's what he's good at, what he's *best* at - he just has an easily written off, morally dubious target for his psycopathy which is criminal wrongdoers but don't get it twisted, he's basically a serial killer. The thing is, I think darker fiction that captures the imagination like The Punisher clearly does is fine, exploration of that level of the dark side of humanity is wonderful - *as long as it's left fictional* , for example No Country for Old Men is a great movie and I'm glad it exists, but do I want cops to emblazon themselves with a coin in an attempt to be more like Anton? Hell no. Darkness, evil, depravity - all should be able to be explored in media, but that's because media should be an alternative to real world darkness and I think for most people who consume dark media it is, in either way, which is good because it helps or should help cut down on the real life cases of these things happening and statistically, it's true, it does. But I worry that, if The Punisher who is someone who is clearly not meant to be emulated is being so then... they're clearly not understanding what Frank does is wrong and how fucked up he is. Or maybe they are and they don't care. I don't honestly know which is worse.

You're right that Frank Castle's quest is fundamentally unachievable, as in the mindset of the conservatives he appeals to, crime is an inevitability, something that can't be changed any more than the weather can. All that can be done is to punish those who break those laws to signify to the rest of society that they are wrong actions. The Punisher appeals to an individualistic mindset wherein police departments are fine, the military is fine, and society is fine. Bad things are done by bad people; eliminate bad individuals, and whatever's left is necessarily good.
This is why conservatives resist addressing things like systemic racism or widespread sexual assault; because they view these as individual crimes done by individual people, none of which are connected. If all problems are solved by murdering the guilty, what happens when racism exists in society itself? It makes us all guilty. It's this extreme binary that makes the Punisher mindset almost impossible to reason with. It's never allowed to be more complicated than "Find bad, get rid of it."

Widespread sexual assault of women partly takes place because society gives men tacit permission to behave like animals; we say things like, "The average man thinks about sex every 6 seconds" or "men only want one thing" or "when my little girl gets in high school, I'm chopping off peepees!" These are jokes we tell in many forms, and they all have the same message: "Men and boys cannot control their sexual urges." This means it isn't a teenage boy's fault when his girlfriend gets pregnant; it's her fault. When a man makes unwanted advances in a bar, it's the woman's duty to "just leave" rather than the man's duty to stop acting like a dog. It doesn't mean that we are all collectively guilty of every rape ever committed, but it does mean that - by treating men as if they have no control over their own desires - we have created an environment where women are thought of as more responsible for sex than men.

These guys forget the Punisher isnt traking down "bad guys", he's traking down the people that killed his familly in the only way he was trained to. In one of his tours in was in a special unit where he literally witnessed the torture and murder of civilians, so his entire charcter after is just a reflection of how horrible and corrupt the justice system has become. Coudnt be more antithetical to what the police is suposed to do.

The town I live in is very conservative and that shows in the general view to the protests. The local newspaper ran a story about potentially defunding the police, and they said that if that happened there would be "anarchy" and that society would be so much more unsafe. I am so worried that the people here will refuse to change and instead there will just be so much more anti-black sentiment than there already is.

The Punisher's skull is memento mori or "remember death". A bit ironic if I may say, the skull was there not only to remind the criminals that death is inevitable, it was also to remind Frank that his life-style would eventually lead to his death. He knew that well, he was a man who had nothing to live for except death -- hence "no one escapes death." Very ironic indeed when you see the skull worn by the police. :)

That depends, if you are talking of the comics of course, if you are speaking of the Nolan Batman, he and Bane does more justice for Gotham than Batman ever did, because he only focus on the mobster, but never exposed or captured a corporate criminals, only a foreign one, typical, not even Earle from his own company that was doing shady dealings, he come out without any consequences whatsoever. Hell, even in Arkham Origins and Batman The Animated Series there was corporate and industrialist criminals.

@@TheKeyser94 No Joker nor Bane had any "point" in the Nolan movies. Joker was a mass serial killer who was willing to blow up boats of people just to prove some morality statement and Bane was an actual terrorist whose plan was to nuke Gotham. What of that is "justice" if I were to ask?
Not to mention both were proven to be wrong. Joker when the boasts don't blow each other up despite his ultimatium and Bane when those of Gotham rose up with Batman even after he "broke" their spirit.

The dangerous part of The Punisher is, ultimately, he's cool. And it's easy to ignore someone being wrong or broken or evil or misguided when they are cool. All this talk about how 'admirable' he is for being strong and protecting the weak is just flowery way of saying 'he's cool and I want to be like him'. I think when people are honest many of us want to be that cool hero that protects the weak and defeats the bad guy. But it's just a fantasy. You can't be a 'cowboy' and save the day. Saving the day starts well before the day is in danger. It's not cool to be a social worker, but they save the day far more than any cop or vigilante.

Like, if it wasn't *BRAD PITT* saying these things and looking like a chiseled Greek God, then pretty much everything he's saying is the stuff of dangerous, psychotic anarchists(in the TRULY bad sense, not in the way that modern anarchists view themselves).
And if it wasn't Brad Pitt being awesome, the message falls flat on it's face, too.
And to be *FRANK* , the movie itself touches on this idea.

Nice comment. But I wouldn’t agree. I don’t think it’s a flowery way of saying something else. I have captain America’s shield as my profile pic. I do because the value set that the character has deeply resonates with me and are traits I wish to reflect in my own day to day life. The admirability of the punisher in righting wrongs despite the amount of suffering and personal sacrifice it has require resonate with people not just in law enforcement and the military. It’s okay to adopt these messages the writers convey in any occupational setting. We can each internet the character differently and that’s what’s great about it.

@@antonjackson9934 Yeah, but the whole point of the Punisher is that he *kills crooked cops* and sleazy criminals that the law can't touch.
That's what a *murderous vigilante* does.
So, it's been profoundly ironic that the very symbol of anarchy and violent resistance to an unethical system when the system fails us...
Is now being unironically used by the very people who are violently supporting the system.

    • @EvilGuacamoleGaming

@@antonjackson9934 Frank is a sad and broken man, desperately clinging to what little he knows- violence- as a means of dealing with the loss of everything he cares about. He is a vigilante because he's got nothing to lose and can't find any other way to have purpose in his life. He is a tragedy. There's no more sense in wanting to emulate him than there is in wanting to emulate Romeo and Juliet.
Rogers, however, is not a broken man. Depending on version, of course; but he doesn't just fight evil or wrong doers, he fights with the aim of a better world. His weapon is a shield, and while he uses it offensively it is rather emblematic of his general goals. He isn't out there viewing criminals as a cancer to be removed but as a sign that there is something bigger that is wrong.
Coming back to this at this point I'm not sure I agree entirely with how I said this, but I still would say there isn't anything to admire in the Punisher. I say this as a person who likes the character quite a bit.
