    Watching this, you could easily make this an ongoing series, Brian. A monthly 'Sad Sack' entry of all the new and rare gems to bum us out that we might be missing. Or, Songs with Downer Lyrics You Can Dance To. This is all meant as a compliment of course! I used to play Rid Of Me a lot: 'Missed' was my fav track. 'Keep On Loving You' still holds up as a catchy slice of cheese. 😎🎶

      Ed, I might be typecast as a sad sack myself if I did a further instalment. One has to be careful not to gain a reputation around here! 🙂

    Holy crap! This thread was MADE for you. No one listens to more serious, joyless, depressing, void of fun, albums that Rolling Stone magazine says it’s cool to like, songs about rain, than Brian. So obviously you did a great Embryonic Robot type job. Leonard Cohen again!😁

      Brian, I was almost crying into my porridge, as you were reading those Joy Division lyrics!...genuinely bleak and fatalistic..another band I admire rather than really enjoy.
      What a fantastic choice with Enola Gay..I bought the single when it came out but I hadn't a clue what the lyrics really meant..I figured it was just a break up song!!..( I also thought Enola Gay was such an enigmatic name for a girlfriend..lol!).
      Leonard again..I must investigate more of his catalogue ( I only have his first 2 records).
      Great response.

    Excellent choices, Brian! Especially great is you did not use one of my ideas! I've not heard that Billy Bragg song, but I nearly wept when you read the lyrics. I hope to complete this tag over the weekend.

      I forgot to mention that Enola Gay has, for some time, been an anthem, of sorts, to the LGBT community. I just learned that very recently. I do wonder why, though!

    Hey Brian! Excellent response. I'm glad you were peer pressured into doing this. 😅 Nice twist on sad love song. I'm a big fan of BSS and related collective members. That said, I've never been that well versed in Metric or Emily Haines. I will definitely check out the album you've showcased here. La Bamba crushes me. Another movie I saw as a kid. This explains so much! I love that Do Make Say Think album. I only have two of theirs on vinyl, but that's one of them. I know Constellation keeps them in print. REO(h no!) Speedwagon. Glad you hopped on this. Cheers, man! ✌

    Hi Brian. Finally I get a shout out and it's for a sad bastard tag... how apropos 😊
    You know lyrics so well as demonstrated by your response. Amazing really.
    I'll have to go over the list again but it's a little cerebral for me 😅. I generally don't pay much attention to lyrics except maybe Floyd or FZ. Weird I know.

    “Let’s talk about a song that I genuinely never want to hear again”…”I was writing an essay or something”…Closer and Unknown Pleasures are top notch, but I don’t play those at parties. “People were probably thinking of more traditional love songs”…I need to explore more Broken Social Scene. “It’s a really weird one I’ve chosen from OMD”…”I don’t have a lot of country songs”.. the ending of La Bamba was terribly sad as you said. REO! I have my original copy I got in grade 8! ✌️

      }Closer and Unknown Pleasures are top notch, but I don’t play those at parties." Great quote 🙂 I tried to get the kids to watch La Bamba. They have no interest. Sad, but they hate everything that is old. Hopefully, that doesn't include me!

    Excellent choices. To me Joy Division are definitely a dark, morose band. That's why I've always preferred New Order! It'd be cool to do a thread about aggressive break up songs. Hole did one, maybe the first song on their debut, 'Violet'. At least the chorus seemed to be that way, not sure about the rest of it. I really like the Broken Social Scene so I'll check out that solo record by Emily Haines. I've yet to hear anything by Metric.

    • @EmbryonicRobot

      An aggressive break up songs thread is a great idea. I can only think of one or two. Great idea. Violet is a fantastic song. I'm streaming it now because I hadn't heard it in a long time! I like New Order, too, but not as much as JD 🙂

    I don’t think I can top Gary’s comment 😂 I don’t think you’re a sad bastard, but I know you have a record collection that may make people wonder. That’s my favourite Lenny record. I knew you’d have Ian. Great choice with Billy. I don’t know Emily’s solo stuff, but dig BSS & Metric…I hope she seeker out some help after that album 😳 No wonder Nick was so broken when PJ broke it off. OMD those perverse bastards. Is Control the La Bamba of today? You have a record player in your car 😂 REO Speedwagon may have written the ultimate power ballad. So much cheese. Nice thread & those are some big beats at the end!

    I'm feeling kind of sad bastardy as I have most of those records. I just realized that "My Old Friend The Blues" is on Sunshine On Leith but I had forgot as I haven't played that album in a while. It was the opposite for me as I first heard the song by Steve Earle and saw him do it in concert. I will have to pull out my CD and listen to the Proclaimers version again. Billy Bragg for the win. Cheers.

      @EmbryonicRobot  21 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Hi Randy, Wow, you must really be sad if you have all of those records. Don't listen to more than one in a day! I should really listen to Earle and the Proclaimers back-to-back to be sure 🙂 Sometimes, I am wrong about things...

    • @EmbryonicRobot

    It's really sad to see Celine struggling with so many medical issues. I always thought she over sang. "Closer" is a good choice. I think "The Smiths" is a great choice. There's a melancholy to all of Morrissey's work, which I find really appealing. "La Bamba" is a fantastic soundtrack, I agree.

    I actually have this one mapped out, I just haven't got to it yet. I wanted to do that Petty ranking for several weeks now, so I just had to fit it in there. My wife used to say that Cohen was sad bastard music, but now she loves most of his music. See, play it enough and they'll come to appreciate it. I haven't heard of the Emily Haines album, but it seems to be something I would like. I have this thing were depressing lyrics have a way of making me feel better, probably because it make my life seem brighter than what it could be maybe. It's like Porcupine Tree or Steven Wilson, I never realized his lyrics were that dark until someone said they were too depressing. Plus Wilson says that a song doesn't have to be loud to be evil. I've paid more attention to his lyrics, and they are very depressing. More joy for me I guess. Oh, Thanks for stealing La Bamba from me, I'll come up with something else. I love that "& Yet & Yet" album too, I don't have the vinyl, but I do have the CD/digital versions. When ever I see a crowd at a concert swishing their hands back and forth in the air, I think if only we could find a way to put dirty windows in front of them, give them a towel and viola, all of our dirty windows would be washed. Sorry, that's stupid, but I can't help having that visual every time LOL. Great response!

    • @EmbryonicRobot
      @EmbryonicRobot  21 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      And I never even really thought of ranking Tom Petty. Well, maybe it seemed too difficult for me. I have some Porcupine Tree but I have never paid any attention to the lyrics! How strange is that? Apologies about La Bamba 🙂 You must be an interesting person to take to a concert!
