    Holy cow, DJ, not only do you maintain a high level of quality you also consistently up the game and take it to a higher level. I can only imagine the amount of preparation, planning, time, and energy this took to put together and edit. As always, genuinely impressive work, sir.
    Also, I REALLY appreciate your minimal use of background music, it's an excellent choice in music and it's just lightly there in the background unlike SO MANY other channels that use such obnoxious or overly loud music and you can't hardly hear what they are even saying...which I assume is the point of their video, lol. Anyway, this was perfect.

    ❤ I share these videos with my mom's cadet corps in Lachute, QC. I find DJ so informative and entertaining that I send these types of videos as ideas for the commanding officer to review and make into activities for his bushcrafting excursions.
    I'm hoping that if they amass enough kids, that they'll set up a relay with an amalgamation of activities picked from these videos that will encourage even more kids to join as new recruits.

    Best TH-cam video I've seen in a long time! I was raised in the suburbs of Chicago, and we used to burn our leaves in the street along the curb, tossing a potato in the fire and retrieving it when the fire and embers subsided. Delicious!

    I can’t believe that for all the camping, survival, and fishing videos I’m subscribed to, this is the first time your channel wound up in my recommendations. 1.18 million subscribers and I’m just getting this now? There’s something terribly wrong with the algorithm.
    I’ve camped all over the country, from Wisconsin to California, Arizona, and for decades in Hawaii. I’m 61, so for most my life there was no such thing as the internet or TH-cam. Now I’m hooked on it after disregarding it for so long. Your channel is incredible. I’ve known all my knots since my kid days and sailing around the South Pacific and rigged all sorts of tarps and shelters, even made hammocks out of old fishing nets that drifted on desolate beaches. But, I’ve never made an automatic rotisserie that was designed by Leonardo DeVinci. That’s just so cool, man. The principal is genius and you made it happen with some sticks and paracord and a knife. Oh, and a rock for the counter weight. This is basically how an old grandfather clock works. And you cooked a chicken with it. Way more useful than knowing the exact time in the woods, for sure.
    You’re a resourceful and entertaining dude. Just subscribed.

    I'd probably keep my fire just to the side of the rotisserie and drag coals underneath the chicken just to get a slow roast and keep the flames at bay. I love tweaking my fires to get just the right amount of heat for my application.

  • @PKAdventures
    @PKAdventures 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    awesome video!
    i have a question about the rotisserie.
    did you ever have any trouble with the part between the 2 sticks getting caught up? it looks like that rock goes pretty crazy sometimes and might swing up over the top of the frame, or the top of the rope, causing it to get stuck and stop the whole process.
    maybe a heavier rock on that part, so it can't swing so wildly, or a lighter rock as the main weight up the tree would make it turn slower so it doesn't swing so wildly?
    actually as i write that, i think that reducing the size of the main weight would be the best option.
    because it would most likely reduce the chances of the small rock getting tangled up, slow down the rotation so you get more even turning, and as the note in the video said, it would increase the time before the device needs to be reset.
    so ya, seems like a smaller weight would greatly improve the build.
    i'll definitely have to give this a try sometime

    • @TheBearEssentials
      @TheBearEssentials  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Oh it really only did that viscous swing when I had the heavy rock on there. Which only lasted 4 mins (i didn’t show changing it up, bc it was just a bit of a boring scene) but I did change to a lighter rock and at the end you can see it slows down significantly.
      So your thoughts are exactly right!!
      Well done! And thx for watching :)

      @PKAdventures 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TheBearEssentials that's awesome!
      if doing that had the effect i thought it would, then there's a solid chance that the few other things i have considered tweaking might just work how i'm thinking too.
      now i'm definitely gonna have to give this a go on my next big trip

      @@TheBearEssentials thanks, it looks really good, the high grind on puukkos makes them really good for carving and small bushcraft tasks

    Hey by the way my friend any edible mushrooms you pick you can take all of it since the stuff you see is only the reproductive organ and it will grow more there. BUT if you want it to spread around the area like its supposed to you can just give the top a little smack to spread the spores just lightly it will also keep the inside of your carry bags clean of spores to lol.

    Okay, but how do you prevent the rock from passing over the thread at the moment of rotation and getting stuck, preventing it from unwinding like in the first demonstration?

    Ok not gonna lie I want a bucksaw, if they are never coming back do you have a backup suggestion. I like how small it packs plus the case that can hold an axe as well.

    In 34 years of existence on this planet, I've never heard of anyone using a square knot for there shoes.

    • @TheBearEssentials
      @TheBearEssentials  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Well, it’s a slipped square knot technically. You know when you pull the two loops? (Bunny ears) If you pulled those all the way through it’s a square knot.
