That isn’t a sanding thingy. It’s a hold wood near a blade thingy. Kinda like a push stick, but not for corners. I’ve seen them used a bunch on jointers. They protect you from blades as well as kickback.

We made men's rings out of steel nuts in 8th grade metal shop just using files and sandpaper. If you leave one side flat you can make it a signet ring, by scratching or etching a design on it.

Congratulations on your engagement box's...... and your engagement!!! I've only just found your channel but I love that you'd go to all those steps just to pop the question, then go ring shopping afterwards!
To make the wedding bands, you could buy 2 gold ring blanks, with the correct internal size (go for a size or 2 smaller then you need so you can polish it to the right size), then pray like crap that you don't slip and trash one! Also there are lathe mounted ring holders, which are a little step up from the wooden dowel but could still be made by you. And a dremel with various polishing attachments would also help a LOT. I'd probably practice on a few more nuts first but it is possible. 👍👍👍👍👍

As somebody who worked as a jeweller, I would say if you have the wax forms it's & tools it's easier to make the whole Ring yourself from Gold and such as the whole oddeal you did.
Sure, you wont have a melting pot and if you start from scratch it's always kinda difficult to first get your wax Form (or a material which is comparable easy to melt out of a gypsum/caster), especially if you wanna make it fancy with cool forms and such.
But the actually art of being a jeweller (Well, if you create / make your own stuff) is actually puttin' Jewls in it without breaking them (It's actually pretty easy to "break" a Diamond for an example), repair pieces (soldering Gold is kinda difficult due to his high melting point, Silver is kinda ok especially because you use a differen tool for that which is in my opinion easier to controll) and actually creating pieces from scratch which are really beautifull.
Long story short: If you know a Jeweller, try to befriend him - Maybe he will let you use his tools / show you some stuff. It could be come handy for some Christmas Gifts and Jeweller - at least in my expierence - love custom made workstations and the standard ones already really expensive to buy.
So maybe it would be mutual beneficial for both.

Congrats! Those boxes look great. Last summer I had a similar plan and made my own engagement ring and box as well. I made my fiance's ring out of some half round sterling silver wire (8 or 10 ga.) and a pre-made 4 prong setting. It was my first attempt at jewelry making and for what I had in mind was pretty straight forward. it only required the wire and setting, 3 grades of silver solder, flux, a pick, a flower pot plate, and a MAP gas torch. the plate was used as a work surface to solder on, ceramic helps keep the heat in the metal. you also need a crock pot, salt, and vinegar to make a jewelers' pickle to remove any oxidation and fire scale. Most of what you don't have laying around the shop can be purchased from a jewelry supply store for about $30. All in all, it took me about two hours to produce a passable ring in my first attempt. I'd recommend you give it a shot.

    Nice!
I made a ring box myself... Well, not exactly a "box", but something a bit like the Faberge egs. Even if comparing my handy work to the masterpieces of art made in the Faberge shop... My ring box is more like a vaguely egg shaped piece of wood that is cut into two pieces and does have a small cavity inside, to fit a ring in it.
For decoration i made a set of copper hearts, and added some glitter and other fancy'ish stuff on it... Even if my work compares quite poorly to the master jewelers of the russian royals, it is one of the finest works I have managed to accomplish so far.

Gold plating problem...the plating will last for a very short time with constant wearing. I have plated hundreds of items with many of them being rings. It just is not made to last. Epoxies and other coating won't wear well either but can extend the life a bit. If you really want a plating that might last a while, try rhodium or platinum. Yes, I have used both of these too.
