The song talks about the dark side in every human being, or in other words, the bad thoughts that exist within people, and this idea was embodied in the video in the form of two different personalities for each member, and this is noticed in the dress and makeup and even in the facial expressions. The concept was expressed as EXO and X-EXO. In the same album, there is another song called Jekyll, which is considered a sequel or another version of the Obsession song. This concept is different and unique in K-pop and has been embodied in an impressive artistic way. Thank you .
This is one aspect. When we keep with the main story started 10 years ago: these shiny brothers are EXO clones manufactured by the red eye to replace the legends who secured the “tree of life”. Yeah I know. But it’s the fact.

All of the theories mentioned are correct. They all carry some truths to the puzzle. When it came out it was considered brave because no one group or soloist has ever come out so boldly. There were originally many negative reviews in the sense that it was a departure from their original style. Reactors were trying to classify it as rap but found the melodic elements especially those sung by Chen, out of place. Well time has proven all the nay sayers wrong. Obsession has become a big hit and is still a piece of EXO work that is still being analyzed and discussed.

Welcome to *"EXO-planet"* , actually they are one of the biggest band in Kpop, if all the other groups are talented, EXO are monsters, they got every thing specially vocals (all the members are vocally amazing, the vocalist can Rapp and the main rapper sing crazy, they have the best vicalist and the best dancers in kpop), EXO's *Chen* has 4 octave vocal range can hit 5 female key, they sing all music styles, but officially they are kings of RnB, also as you see all of them are superb dancer,
PS: Korean Government Officially Awarded EXO With The Title *“The Nation’s Pick”* , they are the most awarded band in Kpop and 4th in the world (till last year - even when they boycotted all awards shows since 2017 - this year they may have lost this position) kings of vocals, not well know in western country lack of promotion.

EXO has 2 rappers Chanyeol and Sehun,they are both very good
in the mv there are 2 types of exo. Good ones and a bad ones (bad ones have very colorful outfits and very strong makeups) they have a massive concept basically they are aliens from EXO planet and each member have their superpowers and their enemy/villain is called Red Force and it almost appears in every mv (appears as cameras with red lights etc) and the bad exos are called x-exo and they are clones of exo (red force made the bad exo) etc THEIR CONCEPT IS SO MIND BLOWING
Ngl, i like EXO's music and i did not know about the concept until now but it's cringe af. Clone aliens, red force, this is the clichè story that only a 8y old can create. Maybe the story is cooler than it sounds, so i'll go and check it...

@@KARIAP sometimes when we see the world in a normal way just like common people, it becomes difficult and stupid for us to understand the thoughts of people who see the world in a very unique and different way. Every human being used to see the world in their own unique perspective way as a kid but as we grow up we change according to the common boring world, where people expect us to behave normal cause we are "ADULTS". But some people doesn't grow up mentally, they remain the same, they don't care about the expectations of common people (moreover I'm talking about the inner child). They don't feel awkward to share their unique thoughts which may sound "cringe" but it's just how they see the world.

Unique thoughts are not cringe, a story about aliens and red force can be cringe. A story about dragons & faires, for example, can be cool or cringe as well. It depends on how the story goes but if the story is just about aliens without explaining why they exist, why they fight, et cetera, then it's just a clichè. Even the name "Red Force" is clichè, there's no originality at all. But i shouldn't expect anything in the first place, their job is just making music, after all + i do not know anything about the story. Btw, your last phrase doesn't make sense. There are absolutely no unique thoughts sice we're talking about clichè and this isn't about how they see the world, it's about a story that's overused to the point it became embarassing. Aliens are used everywhere nowadays: cartoons, games, movies and now music?

What you saw in the "Obsession" MV was that EXO's doppelgangers were actually their alter ego clones and they were using their superpowers, such as Chanyeol with his fire power, Sehun uses his wind power to deflect the arrows, Baekhyun uses his power of light as a saber in the fencing battle, and Suho (the one with red hair) controls water in the room with all the pictures of water, etc. to fight their other selves. You see the planet on fire in the end of the MV because it's supposed to show how the world is coming to an end as EXO (the good guys in all black) and X-EXO (the evil ones in the colorful outfits with crazy hair and makeup) battle for control, etc. (Each of the members are playing 2 different characters -- there are only 6 people in this MV.)
X-EXO has been created by the evil Red Force and EXO and X-EXO are fighting each other. EXO are trying to prevent X-EXO from taking over and corrupting humanity and X-EXO are trying to stop EXO from finding the Tree of Life and putting the two halves back together and restoring peace, etc.
To truly understand EXO you need to understand that EXO debuted in 2012. "Mama" is EXO's debut song and MV and it is how EXO was introduced to the world and it explains the group's concept -- and since then, everything SM does branches off from that storyline. From day one, EXO's concept is that they are aliens from planet Exo and they came to Earth with superpowers to protect the Tree of Life from the Red Forces. Each of the members has a superpower that is unique to them and almost every MV will have at least one, if not all of them, using their powers.
Now you also need to know that In the beginning there was 12 members and they were split up into 2 groups EXO-K and EXO-M. EXO-K sang and performed their songs in Korean and EXO-M sang and performed those same songs in Mandarin Chinese. EXO-K had 6 Korean members and EXO-M had 4 Chinese members and 2 Korean members. So to really understand their full origin story you have to watch both the K and the M version of "Mama", because the EXO-K version focuses on the K members and their powers and the EXO-M version focuses on the M members and their powers.
However, since then, 3 of the 4 Chinese members have left the group (short answer to focus on their solo work back in China) but there is still one Chinese member left, Lay. (Any performances or MVs you watch that took place prior to May 2014 you will see all 12 members.) However, now -- because they no longer have enough Chinese members -- they no longer do separate promotions, but they still produce almost all of their MVs and main songs in both Korean and Mandarin they just now promote all as one big group EXO with 9 members. However, in the "Obsession" MV there are only 6 members -- Suho, Baekhyun, Chen, Chanyeol, Kai and Sehun -- because 2 of the members -- D.O. and Xiumin -- are on hiatus during this comeback as they serve in the military; and due to the political issues between the Korean and Chinese government, Lay -- their Chinese member -- was unable to participate in activities with the group.
So each new MV or project from EXO tells another part of the story, and over the years we fans have started to create a timeline and idea of what we think each part of the story is telling us. However, the introduction of "Obsession's" part of the story really threw all of our theories for a loop and it has made us question everything we have ever thought was happening in EXO's storyline.
The MV starts out with the red and blue light because it's supposed to represent how EXO are currently battling with X-EXO and the Red Force for control. In EXO's MVs when you see red light or anything that is red, this represents the Red Force, and when you see blue light or anything that is blue, this is thought to represent EXO. Therefore, when you see red and blue in one scene or purple -- red and blue mixed together make purple -- this is showing how the line between the two sides is being blurred and they are fighting each other, etc.
Since "Obsession" some think maybe EXO has been trapped somewhere from the very beginning and it has been X-EXO that we have been following all along. But I think it's still even more complex than that. I think at times we have been watching EXO and at times we have been watching X-EXO -- with the release of "Obsession" we have only just discovering that the story hasn't necessarily been showing EXO the whole time.
With the new information provided to us through "Obsession," it also makes me question how Lay fits within the X-EXO/EXO storyline. Maybe he is one of the members who has been able to break free or avoid the Red Forces' control. In Lay's solo MV for "Sheep," the Allen Walker relift version, we see everything burning outside as if an apocalypse is happening. Maybe "Sheep" is showing us the planet burning from Lay's viewpoint, like we see the world burning at the end of the "Obsession" MV.
Also, I believe that the storyline in "Obsession" is connected to SuperM's debut "Jopping" MV storyline. If you pay attention to what Baekhyun and Kai were wearing in "Obsession," those outfits are very similar to the black outfits that Baekhyun and Kai are wearing in the "Jopping" MV. Kai is even wearing the same backpack parachute in both MVs. Which seems to be SM Entertainment's way of making sure we see the connection between those MVs. So it is thought that, as part of SuperM's storyline, EXO has gathered the best of the best of SM's groups -- EXO, Taemin/SHINee, NCT/WayV -- to help them battle the Red Force and maybe eventually take down X-EXO. Just like the Marvel Avengers come together as individual superheroes with their own storylines to create the Avengers and to fight evil, it is thought that SuperM is coming together to create the ultimate supergroup to help EXO fight the evil and corruption inflicted on humanity by the Red Force.
Unfortunately, to make it even more difficult to understand, each part of the story is not necessarily in chronological order, so we as EXO-L (EXO fans) have to become detectives and analyze every aspect of all of their teasers, MVs, song lyrics, albums, concert VCRs, choreography and even live performances and piece it all together to understand the story behind it all. And not only are EXO's and SuperM's MVs and storylines connected, but pretty much all of SM's groups have storylines and concepts that connect together, which is designed to become part of one giant graphic novel or movie in the SM Culture Universe.
To help you pinpoint the powers being used in EXO's MVs and live performances, here is a list of the members and what their special power is.
EXO-K
💦 Suho (Kim JunMyeon) is the leader of the group and he is a lead vocalist -- his power is the ability to control water (Fun fact: Suho in Korean means guardian, as in the guardian of EXO. That's why as the leader of EXO, his stage name is Suho.)
💡Baekhyun is a main vocalist and his superpower is the ability to control light
🔥Chanyeol is the main rapper and lead vocalist -- his power is the ability to control fire and his spirit animal is the phoenix.
🌏D.O. (Do KyungSoo) is a main vocalist and his power is the ability to control earth (dirt) which gives him strength/force
☄Kai (Kim JongIn) is a main dancer, lead vocalist and sub-rapper and his power is teleportation (Kai means opening as in a door or gateway, so his stage name is meant to symbolize his role in the group.)
🌪Sehun is the youngest member of the group and he is a lead rapper, lead dancer and a vocalist -- his power is the ability to control wind
EXO-M
❄Xiumin (Kim MinSeok) is the oldest member of the group and he is a lead vocalist and lead rapper and his power is the ability to control snow/ice (frost)
🦄 Lay (Zhang Yixing) is the Chinese member of the group, he is a main dancer, lead vocalist and rapper -- his power is the ability to heal anything.
🌩 Chen (Kim JongDae) is a main vocalist and his power is the ability to control thunder/lightning/electricity
(As you can see, Xiumin and Chen were given stage names that sounded more Chinese so they would fit in better in EXO-M because they are the Korean members of the Chinese group)
The Chinese members who are no longer part of the group, but are still an important part of EXO's storyline:
🐉 Kris was the leader of EXO-M he was a main rapper and vocalist -- his power was the ability to fly and his spirit animal was a dragon (Kris left the group in April 2014.)
💭 Luhan was a main vocalist and his power was telekinesis (The ability to control things with his mind) (Luhan left the group in October 2014.)
⏰Tao (Z.Tao) was a lead rapper and vocalist and the martial artist of the group, so he did the flips and stunts in the group's routines. His power was the ability to control time (Tao ended activities with EXO in August 2015.)

Personally, I take the lyrics as them telling saesangs or alternitively, intrusive thoughts, to GET LOST.
The concept of the MV is then fighting their dark alter ego's. Which also fits the lyrics. ;)

Actually there are 9 members in EXO. But currently they're enlisting one by one and one member Lay, he's chinese, due to the bad relationship between SK and China, and he's one of the most respected artist and have big influence there, he couldn't participate in EXO promotion for years and only promote as solo artist (but he still EXO member). In this obsession album only 6 members participated, but they still slayin. They have been hiatus since 2020 if I'm not mistaken and will be back after all members done enlisting (maybe until 2025). But last year they release a special album for their fans, EXOL, which is an unpromoted album since they're still on hiatus. Only 7 members participated in this album. One of the best part of this album is that Lay participated in this album after years. This recent album called Don't Fight The Feeling and is ALSO A BOP!! They really flexing their vocals in this album. HIGHLY REQUEST you to react to this album too (not only the title track. Seriously make a long video of reacting to EXO whole album and we'd still watch it) ☺️
If all kpop groups are great, then exo is the monster! Their quality is another level. Exo is the standard and trendsetter in kpop. Almost all kpop idols want to be like exo, exo is the idol of idols.
They debuted in 2012 as the opening of the 3rd generation of kpop. They are the only group that can compete and become number 1 at the end of the 2nd generation, become kings in the 3rd generation, and are able to stay at the top tier in the 4th generation.
Senior kpop prides on exo as their junior, and junior idols adore and make exo a role model as their top senior. Istg, no one can beat their quality! Exo is the most prestigious group/as member in many categories (music, state *Even being a guest at the closing ceremony of the 2018 olympic. Baekhyun sang the national anthem at an international event in Seoul which was attended by many presidents and state officials from various countries, he also sang the national anthem at the opening of the soccer ball in Korea, becoming the first group to be named the nation pick from the president, became the group to receive the first award from the country because of the hallyu wave, became the ambassador of friendship between Korea and China, etc.*, world fashion, film, and other entertainment sectors). 3 former exo members are the best actors and talents in China. Whereas 9 exo members are now great individually, 6/9 exo members are successful soloists with million sellers, 2/9 have their solo concerts, 9 of them play movies, dramas, musical theater. They become individual brand ambassadors for global brands such as Gucci, Dior, LV, Burberry, BVLGARI, Calvin Klein, Berluty, Tommy H. etc. And don't forget that they are still the group with the most awards, which is more than 500 awards in all fields of entertainment.
One thing that is unfortunate, exo is not a group that gets massive promotion facilities. Their target market is only in Asia, they have never promoted in the West (That's why the company rejected many offers from the west in 2015-2016, such as refusing offers to collab with Clean Bandit, invitations for billboard interviews, etc). EXO never collaborated with any artist, exo grew by itself. Even the famous thing is exo got very little promotion, also had to go through the fandom regeneration phase by his company to save other groups in the company.

Exo are amazing. Hate people pitting them against other groups, all groups are great individually and have their own sound. Exo have been in the industry longer than most and are considered kpop royalty. Amazing discography, have very successful soloists and actors and are amazing dancers. They’re well rounded. I'm so happy you finally got to EXO. I was EXO-L before I became ARMY and I love both groups, they are amazing!
Now, about what this song is about and the video, they're 2 different things. EXO has a very unique and special story line and concept. It's a very complicated and long story to tell here, but you could probably check out that in another video. I'll focous on the song itself. This is for all the obsessive "fans", better known in South Korea as sassaengs. EXO, as many other idol groups have faced a SH!T TON of privacy invation by these people. They have snuck in their dorms/hotel rooms and stolen personal stuff, even taken pictures of them while they where sleeping and such. They constantly harrass their families and expose personal information, as well as call them constantly on their personal phones. It's really bad, so they decided to release this song. They have asked a bunch of times (respectfully) to stop this, but that obviously didn't happen. As a result, this was to show that they've had enough of this and they won't keep quiet nor be "nice" about it anymore.
Baekhyun, one of the members (the one with white hair doing the fencing) exposed one of them, he recorded a phone call he recived by a sassaeng harrasing and threating him, so he exposed her in return. It's really sick what these people do to artist in S.K., it's too much information to share in one comment post, but I hope this brings a bit of light on the matter. This song is amazing, and the visuals as well.

Yes, that's the concept in the video according to their story line (X EXO vs EXO). I know and agree to that. But the actual meaning behind the song goes further than the video concept. Take into consideration that this was released around the time of Chen's announcement and we all know what happened during that time.

While listening to EXO songs, one thing I've noticed, so far, is that... they don't have a song dedicated for their haters or someone who don't like or look down on them They only released songs about them or their fans, or songs that inspires everyone. Except for Chanyeol's rap dissing Mnet, which is super cool. Not sure if they have any, I only got to know them since last year.. I'm still digging into their world. Hihi
So yeah, this song is all about themselves [x-exo]. And i'm sure they're not that obssessed to released a song about being obssessed on either Ranks/results or their music career. They're always humble and they're enjoying their job.

When they were still attending the awards shows the VCRs before their performances were a part of that too

That's why at the end they're saying "it's me looking at myself in the mirror".
