Exo is known as the 3rd generation group but they actually debuted in 2012 which is between the time of 2nd and 3rd generation. So the kpop groups that you see now, exo actually played a great role in paving the way for them.
-Exo has been active since 2011. They debuted with 12 members in 2012, divided into 2 units, both consisting of 6 members, one Korean and one Chinese. They would sing songs in 3 languages- Korean, Chinese and mandarin.
- the fandom name for Exo is EXO-L . The 2 units at first was EXO-K (Korean) AND EXO-M (Chinese), so they decided to name the fandom EXO-L which also means EXO-LOVE.
- Out of 4 Chinese members, 3 left due to mistreatment and disagreement with the company and last Chinese member Lay's contract with the company SM ended but he's still part of the group. Now there's a total of 8 active members, although in a few videos you'll notice 1/2 members missing due to their mandatory military service.
- Exo is known as the vocal kings of the whole K-pop industry and they're selected as the Nation's pick of Korea. They are multi talented artists who don't only sing and dance, they are also song writers, composer, producer, professional dancers, DJ, can play multiple instruments, model and brand ambassadors for big brands like Gucci, Dior,Prada, Valentino etc. All the members have soothing to shocking vocals and all of em can low-key rap too. And guess what, all are actors and musical actors as well.
- Exo was the first group to actually have a fixed storyline which they follow throughout their every song. Exo is basically a group of ALIENS who came to earth after an evil red force destroyed their planet which is known as EXO-PLANET. All 9 members have alien powers such as fire,water, healing,thunder, light, frost, strength, wind and teleportation. You'll see em applying these in all their MV even in solo songs. - Exo has the strongest vocal line in kpop. There are 3 main vocalists in Exo and they are among the top vocalists in kpop. The guy who hit the high note that you liked, he's the best of the bests in the industry. People say he's got a golden voice. There's one main rapper and one lead rapper. Other members can also rap if they're given the lines. There's two main dancers who are known as dancing machine. Their main dancer Kai was chosen as the best dancer of kpop. They're also known for kings of live performance. One of their concert was awarded as the best concert in 2017.
- Exo broke the drought of 12 years in kpop album sales by becoming a million seller group in 2013. Main vocalist Baekhyun was the one to sell million copies of his album in 19 years in the kpop industry. Still they don't fail to sell million copies each time.
- Exo always releases their group albums on the day of solar eclipse because it's related to their storyline.
- Exo is known for their rnb vibes.. they're actually kings of rnb. But they can try any genre and make a masterpiece out of it. They have a bunch of songs of different genres and vibes. Just ask EXO-Ls (Exo fandom name) what type you want, they'll suggest you everything.
- EXO were the first kpop group to perform in the closing ceremony of the Olympics, first to have their song played in the world's tallest tower Burj khalifa. First kpop group to invent Bluetooth lightsticks that changes colours.
- Exo holds the record of the fastest concert tickets sold out in the whole world. They achieved this by selling out 67k concert tickets within just 0.2 seconds breaking their own record of being sold out in 0.4 seconds. Even their fanmeeting tickets get sold out in seconds or a few minutes.

Actually what got Exo famous was their song “Growl” it’s actually the country’s National pick up song. They’ve been around for about 11 years and have been making records the whole time. They are trend setters and role models to other idols.
They have the title "Vocals King of Kpop" and "Nation's Pick". One of the living legends in kpop. Well known for their live performances so much better than studio version and also for their versatility to sing many kinds of genres, you can see their discography (insane and consists of many genres).
Undoubtedly holds the best discography in kpop
EXO were one of the legends, if not THE LEGEND, that built kpop to what it is now. A lot of idols these days, from groups like SKZ, Ateez, SVNTN and such refer to some of the artists from exo as their inspiration. They're not called Kings of KPOP for nothing :)

I would actually like to suggest that before anything, please please please just react to Exo Killing voice on Dingo. They recently performed live there. You'll know what they sound like in different types of songs.
And for MVS..... Please react to Monster, Let me in and Ko ko bop. These 3 have totally different vibes. Dark, soft & sad and a summer party song.

They are LEGENDS, very highly respected, and deemed as Idols of the idols. They are not promoted outside Asia, thus, most western peeps never heard of them. Despite that, there were the most awarded artist in Korean industry prior to their military enlistment era that started in 2019- present. They also hold the record for the all time fastest selling concert in the world (at .02 secs beating thier own record). In 2022 it's reported that EXO is the richest Korean artist). All of them have individual careers as tv/ movie/ musical theatre actors, solo artist, luxury brand ambassadors, businessmen etc. EXO is also the pioneer of Kpop concepts. Their concept since debut is that they are aliens with superpowers from an EXOPLANET; hence, the group name EXO.
Exo has been around since 2012 and they’re all between the ages of 29-32 & everyone in the call me baby music video apart from one are still in the group.
They are extremely multitalented and can pretty much do everything. They have some of the strongest vocalists, dancers and rappers in kpop and have had a massive influence over groups that came after them. Kai is a massive role model for so many idol dancers in kpop (including ateez)

Believe me exo discography is insaaaaane i got into kpop because of them and they are still my number one no one do it like them because they are the vocal kings of kpop and they are one of the biggest group that made kpop history
EXO never disappoints. You could click on any EXO video and have a good time. They have recently gone on a program called Killing Voice where they performed a medley of some of their more popular songs, which I highly suggest watching. But if I have to suggest 3 songs from different genres, they are Monster, Hear Me Out, and MAMA (their debut song) because they have extremely different vibes.

What you saw in the "Obsession" MV was that EXO's doppelgangers were actually their alter ego clones and they were using their superpowers, such as Chanyeol with his fire power, Sehun uses his wind power to deflect the arrows, Baekhyun uses his power of light as a saber in the fencing battle, and Suho (the one with red hair) controls water in the room with all the pictures of water, etc. to fight their other selves. You see the planet on fire in the end of the MV because it's supposed to show how the world is coming to an end as EXO (the good guys in all black) and X-EXO (the evil ones in the colorful outfits with crazy hair and makeup) battle for control, etc. (Each of the members are playing 2 different characters -- there are only 6 people in this MV.)
X-EXO has been created by the evil Red Force and EXO and X-EXO are fighting each other. EXO are trying to prevent X-EXO from taking over and corrupting humanity and X-EXO are trying to stop EXO from finding the Tree of Life and putting the two halves back together and restoring peace, etc.
To truly understand EXO, you need to be aware that EXO debuted in 2012. "Mama" is EXO's debut song and MV and it is how EXO was introduced to the world and it explains the group's concept -- and since then, everything SM does branches off from that storyline. From day one, EXO's concept is that they are aliens from planet Exo and they came to Earth with superpowers to protect the Tree of Life from the Red Forces. Each of the members has a superpower that is unique to them and almost every MV will have at least one, if not all of them, using their powers.
Now you also need to know that In the beginning there was 12 members and they were split up into 2 groups EXO-K and EXO-M. EXO-K sang and performed their songs in Korean and EXO-M sang and performed those same songs in Mandarin Chinese. EXO-K had 6 Korean members and EXO-M had 4 Chinese members and 2 Korean members. So to really understand their full origin story, you have to watch both the K and the M version of "Mama", because the EXO-K version focuses on the K members and their powers and the EXO-M version focuses on the M members and their powers.
However, since then, 3 of the 4 Chinese members have left the group -- short answer to focus on their solo work back in China -- but there is still one Chinese member left, Lay. (Any performances or MVs you watch that took place prior to May 2014 you will see all 12 members.) However, now -- because they no longer have enough Chinese members -- they no longer do separate promotions, but they still produce almost all of their MVs and main songs in both Korean and Mandarin, they just now promote all as one group EXO with 9 members. However, in the "Obsession" MV there are only 6 members -- Suho, Baekhyun, Chen, Chanyeol, Kai and Sehun -- because 2 of the members -- D.O. and Xiumin -- are on hiatus during this comeback as they serve in the military; and due to the political issues between the Korean and Chinese government, Lay -- their Chinese member -- was unable to participate in activities with the group.
So, each new MV or project from EXO tells another part of the story, and over the years we fans have started to create a timeline and idea of what we think each part of the story is telling us. However, the introduction of "Obsession's" part of the story really threw all of our theories for a loop, and it has made us question everything we previously have ever thought was happening in EXO's storyline.
The MV starts out with the red and blue light because it's supposed to represent how EXO are currently battling with X-EXO and the Red Force for control. In EXO's MVs when you see red light or anything that is red, this represents the Red Force, and when you see blue light or anything that is blue, this is thought to represent EXO. Therefore, when you see red and blue in one scene or purple -- red and blue mixed together make purple -- this is showing how the line between the two sides is being blurred and they are fighting each other, etc.
Since "Obsession," some think maybe EXO has been trapped somewhere from the very beginning and it has been X-EXO that we have been following all along. But I think it's still even more complex than that. I think at times we have been watching EXO, and at times we have been watching X-EXO -- with the release of "Obsession" we have only just discovered that the story hasn't necessarily been showing EXO the whole time.
With the new information provided to us through "Obsession," it also makes me question how Lay fits within the X-EXO/EXO storyline. Maybe he is one of the members who has been able to break free or avoid the Red Forces' control. In Lay's solo MV for "Sheep," the Allen Walker relift version, we see everything burning outside as if an apocalypse is happening. Maybe "Sheep" is showing us the planet burning from Lay's viewpoint, like we see the world burning at the end of the "Obsession" MV.
Also, I believe that the storyline in "Obsession" is connected to SuperM's debut "Jopping" MV storyline. If you pay attention to what Baekhyun and Kai were wearing in "Obsession," those outfits are very similar to the black outfits that Baekhyun and Kai are wearing in the "Jopping" MV. Kai is even wearing the same backpack parachute in both MVs. Which seems to be SM Entertainment's way of making sure we see the connection between those MVs.
Therefore, it is thought that, as part of SuperM's storyline, Baekhyun and Kai have gathered the best of the best of SM's groups -- Taemin from SHINee, Taeyong and Mark from NCT, Ten from WayV and Lucas who is a former member of WayV -- to help them battle the Red Force, and maybe, eventually, take down X-EXO. Just like the Marvel Avengers come together as individual superheroes with their own storylines to create the Avengers and to fight evil, it is thought that SuperM is coming together to create the ultimate supergroup to help EXO fight the evil and corruption inflicted on humanity by the Red Force.
Unfortunately, to make it even more difficult to understand, each part of the story is not necessarily in chronological order, so we as EXO-L (EXO fans) have to become detectives and analyze every aspect of all of their teasers, MVs, song lyrics, albums, concert VCRs, choreography and even live performances and piece it all together to understand the story behind it all. And not only are EXO's and SuperM's MVs and storylines connected, but pretty much all of SM's groups have storylines and concepts that connect together, which is designed to become part of one giant graphic novel or movie in the SM Culture Universe.
To help you pinpoint the powers being used in EXO's MVs and live performances, here is a list of the members and what their special power is.
EXO-K
💦 Suho (Kim JunMyeon) is the leader of the group and he is a lead vocalist -- his power is the ability to control water (Fun fact: Suho in Korean means guardian, as in the guardian of EXO. That's why as the leader of EXO, his stage name is Suho.)
💡Baekhyun is a main vocalist and his superpower is the ability to control light
🔥Chanyeol is the main rapper and lead vocalist -- his power is the ability to control fire and his spirit animal is the phoenix.
🌏D.O. (Do KyungSoo) is a main vocalist and his power is the ability to control earth (dirt), which gives him super strength/force
☄Kai (Kim JongIn) is a main dancer, lead vocalist and sub-rapper and his power is teleportation (Kai means opening as in a door or gateway, so his stage name is meant to symbolize his role in the group.)
🌪Sehun is the youngest member of the group and he is a lead rapper, lead dancer and a vocalist -- his power is the ability to control wind
EXO-M
❄Xiumin (Kim MinSeok) is the oldest member of the group and he is a lead vocalist and lead rapper and his power is the ability to control snow/ice (frost)
🦄 Lay (Zhang Yixing) is the Chinese member of the group, he is a main dancer, lead vocalist and rapper -- his power is the ability to heal anything.
🌩 Chen (Kim JongDae) is a main vocalist and his power is the ability to control thunder/lightning/electricity
(As you can see, Xiumin and Chen were given stage names that sounded more Chinese so they would fit in better in EXO-M because they are the Korean members of the Chinese group.)
The Chinese members who are no longer part of the group, but are still an important part of EXO's storyline:
🐉 Kris was the leader of EXO-M he was a main rapper and vocalist -- his power was the ability to fly and his spirit animal was a dragon (Kris left the group in April 2014.)
💭 Luhan was a main vocalist and his power was telekinesis (The ability to control things with his mind) (Luhan left the group in October 2014.)
⏰Tao (Z.Tao) was a lead rapper and vocalist and the martial artist of the group, so he did the flips and stunts in the group's routines. His power was the ability to control time (Tao ended activities with EXO in August 2015.)
EXO's most recent comeback is a good showing of their range~ They released two pre-release songs with MVs for both: Let Me In & Hear Me Out
- Let Me In: a more tender R&B ballad dedicated to fans that really shows off EXO's vocal skills (also with a sneaky inclusion of an unique style of rap from the rappers)
- Hear Me Out: It's a fun song & mv!~^.^ Another R&B song but more old school style that really lets the lead vocals shine also (one of EXO's many strengths is that while they have three official main vocals, their lead vocals are of the caliber to be main vocals in any other group, and even their rappers are trained vocalists)
And then there's the title track Cream Soda which is classic EXO/kpop sexy summer song that stills lets EXO flex their unique vocal prowess~~~ It has a great dance/dance practice, too^.^
Missing from all this, tho, is one member. Lay (Zhang Yixing) is EXO's Chinese member. Political conflicts between China and South Korea keep him from promoting with EXO a lot, but he's still considered an EXO member (even tho he did not resign with the label EXO is under, SM). A good taste for you of the work Lay does would be either: LIT or VEIL~~~
In EXO's "Call Me Baby" MV there are 10 members of the original 12 member group. This MV came out in 2015 and it was the first MV after 2 of EXO's Chinese members left -- Kris left right after their "Overdose" MV came out and Luhan left about 6 months later in 2014. This also was the last MV were we see Tao, the third Chinese member that left the group. Tao (The tall, blond with the orange shoes, who is the youngest member of EXO-M) left the group shortly after "Call Me Baby." Since then, EXO has been a 9 member group, and they are all going strong and still very much a part of the group.
EXO just had their most recent comeback last month with their new songs "Let Me In", "Hear Me Out" and "Cream Soda."
EXO debuted in April 2012, and are considered the group that started the 3rd generation, so this year is their 11th anniversary. The oldest member, Xiumin, is currently 33 and the youngest members, Kai and Sehun, are 29. They may look young, but they aren't that young. During their "Call Me Baby" era, they were 25-21 years old.
First generation is anyone who debuted from 1996-2000, 2nd gen. is anyone who debuted from about 2001-2011, 3rd gen. is anyone who debuted from 2012-2018 and 4th gen. began around 2019 to present. A generation is about a decade, give or take a year or so.
If you liked this song, you should also check out the EXO-M Mandarin Chinese version of "Call Me Baby." If you watch the two versions side by side, you will see that the members that are featured in each part are different and even in the dance sections where you might think "it looks the same" there are different members doing different parts. The two versions of their MVs may look similar, but that's only because they filmed the MV twice and deliberately made the scenes look the same. Also if you really pay attention, the scenes may look the same, but the members who sing the parts are different depending on the version that you watch.
For example, in the Mandarin version you will see the EXO-M (Chinese) members featured more (Lay, Xiumin, Chen and Tao) and they sing the main parts, and in the Korean version the EXO-K members (D.O., Baekhyun, Chanyeol, Sehun, Suho and Kai) sing those same parts. In the Korean version a lot of the main parts were sung by D.O., but if you watch the mandarin version you will see that Lay sings those parts, and in the Mandarin version the rap was done by Tao and Xiumin, where in the Korean version it's Chanyeol and Sehun, etc. Also, if you watch the Mandarin version, you will be able to see a different sports car with Tao driving the car instead of Kai.
Fun fact: Leading up to the release of the "Call Me Baby" MV, there were 10 Pathcode teasers that were released over several weeks. There was a short teaser video for each of the members, and combined with clues from an SM Entertainment twitter account, we had to piece together the story and solve the mystery to reveal the release date and title of EXO's new song, which ended up being "Call Me Baby." If you notice, there are 10 letters in the title "Call Me Baby," so there was one letter per EXO member. If you want to watch their Pathcode teasers just search the SMTown TH-cam channel. They are all there. The stories in the teasers also connect to EXO's larger storyline as well, and it is thought that they not only show clues to "Call Me Baby," but they also reveal more clues to EXO's storyline and tell a little more of EXO's story. The Pathcode videos are super interesting and very mysterious, just like everything EXO does.

I’m always little surprised when people don’t know EXO but I think newer kpop fans come in with 4th generation groups (like Ateez) and don’t always hear about the 3rd gens, even ones as big as EXO. In 2013, a year after their debut, EXO was the first group in 12 years to sell over a million physical copies of an album. They hold numerous industry records and almost 200 awards. (Call Me Baby on its own won 18 music show awards.) One of their concerts sold out 65,000+ tickets in 0.4 seconds, then they beat their own record with 65k+ tickets in 0.2 seconds. They’ve been called the vocal kings and the nation’s pick. In other words, they’re not just your everyday kpop group!
Their breakthrough song was Growl in 2013. It was such a huge hit that people have called it South Korea’s second national anthem. Give it a try. It will seem very retro!
SM Artists are vocal power houses. EXO is probably the best in that regard but that company really finds great vocalists and for whatever reason every single group sounds awesome, especially when they all sing together. Harmonies are on fire in that company.
EXO is known to be one of the best vocal groups in the whole industry and Chen (one of the members) is by the industry itself considered to be one of the best vocalists. He really is pleasant for the ears.
For my personal taste Chens and Baekhyuns voices are just chefs kiss.
About their ages...well they are all in their early 30s and very late 20s.
Korean idols , or Koreans in general seem to look younger than they are. 3rd gen idols are more or less in their mid 20s to early 30s.

Little information for you, EXO is THE GROUP.. and they Blueprint for every group that you listen to today. They are known as the Vocal Kings of K-Pop and have held that title for 11 years.
Definitely check out their debut song Mama. Sets the pace ...overdose...monster...don't mess up my tempo (great Acapella section)...end with Cream Soda. If you love R&B, SWEET LIES IS IT. all their B Sides deserve a listen. .

Call Me Baby came out in their 4th year and it was a huge hit that year - probably the song that got them a lot more international fans (although Growl was their first Huge hit). The sound is a throwback to 1990s R&B - in particular New Jack Swing. Teddy Riley, who was one of the big producers at SM (their music company), helped create the New Jack Swing sound (in fact he was one of the persons who helped Michael Jackson with his Dangerous album) - and he kind of steered the company into this 90s and early 2000s R&B sound. At this point there are 10 members (Exo started with 12 but 2 Chinese members left after suing the company). Since then a third member - Tao - left Exo right after this - and a fourth - Lay, who is Chinese - doesn't really promote with them anymore because of the political situation between China and Korea. Exo is really down to 8 members since 2016. Btw, the choreo is by Napoleon and Tabitha, better known as NappyTabs, who were a big part of So You Think You Can Dance.

EXO is my #1 Kpop group .. so diverse, so much discography! Known as Vocal Kings. Their live performances are the best in the industry. If I’m not mistaken, they started out as 12 members in 2011 which divided into two subunits, EXO-K the Korean group and EXO-M the Chinese group. But then 3 members left the Chinese group in 2014 due to unfair contracts and bad treatment from the company so the remaining members merged to become just one group, EXO

Call Me Baby wasn't the song that blew them up honestly 😆 EXO has been around for 11 years and their title track from their 1st Full Allbum called GROWL in 2013 (1 year into their carrer) was the one that make them Nation's Pick and the song itself is like SK's national anthem up til now.

Their entire discography and all of their solos deserve a deep dive. The eve (only has a dance practice), let me in, and monster are three completely different style of song.

Just like you I discovered them pretty late, during Covid in 2020, when they’ve been active since 2012! Their company never really cared about promoting them abroad I think, unfortunately for us… I regret not knowing them before and I had a lot to catch but better late than never I guess !

One member is Chinese and is currently not participating due to tensions between China and Korea because he is an ambassador for Chinese youth.

They all can sing amazingly and that is why they are considered the Vocal Kings. They have only amazing songs, great songs and good songs. They really never miss. Once you listen more to them you will get hooked. Also the solo projects of the members are absolutely fire. Don't miss out on them.

If you want some different suggestion for EXO musics, I bet every EXO-L (EXO fans) will give you various choices since EXO discography is very vast and diverse. However, for a start I would recommend:
- MAMA (debut song, some gregorian/metal/choir song). 12 (complete) members.
- Miracles in December (winter release, full ballad song). 12 members but only 3 main vocals sing.
- Kokobop (summer release, some pop electronic/reggae song). 8 members.
And may I suggest one more song?
- Tempo (a total masterpiece, pop dance, R&B with acapella). 9 members.

The reason why you're finding out about EXO late is partly because EXO is at the stage in their career where the members have to go their mandatory military training. For the last couple of years, the group has been pretty quiet since many members were doing their military training...there's now two members who still need to complete, but the rest have finished it. The other thing is, EXO doesn't release music as often as other groups. Most k-pop groups release at least two albums (or ep, or mini-album) a year. EXO doesn't release an album every year. They were the most popular k-pop group prior to 2016 (after 2016 BTS became more popular) and with their type of success, they didn't need to constantly promote themselves with new music.

EXO are legends and very well known for their amazing live vocals. The live performances are even better than their CDs. They debut in 2012. Unfortunately, their company only promotes them in Asia. They're now between the ages of 29 - 33. It's pronounced XO but they use E.X.O. for adlibs or to hype the fans during concerts. EXO is the only kpop group I like. I'm still not a fan kpop LOL! The one with the high pitch voice is Chen, one of the main vocalists and you would see him the high notes in Killing Voice.
I think you may not have heard of them because SM (the controlling red flag of companies) decided to push them in the Asian market, where BTS was pushed over seas in the USA, so alot of people in the West missed out of the first few years of EXO. I only found them 5 years ago. Try Monster/Growl/Sing for you as a combo...or Cream Soda/The Eve/Smile on my Face...Tempo, 24/7, love me right....also there is a great dingo live vocals video, and a acoustic stage medley...and a stage verison of mama, wolf, and monster that might gwt blocked but the japan one is the best
