    You should look into old Boston bulldogs if you're lookin for a small working bulldog

      Too drivey but I have looked into them. Nathaniel Rutan bred for different type dogs than what I’m looking for but I really appreciate the suggestion. I like hearing suggestions from people because I always hear about new people and breeding programs from them.

    Modern breeders are obsessed with SIZE. You see this in the vast majority of working breeds in the USA. i.e. German Shepard's are much smaller in Germany than in the USA. Why - because breeders in the USA have little to no practical experience with working dogs. Regarding Southern Bulldog's - AB's or Alapaha Bulldog breeders (with the exception of White English) have ever actually lived on a farm - where they work a dog. 1. Natural guardianship of property 2. Natural guardianship of the livestock 3. Working the livestock 4. rodent control etc. Some are using their dogs in wild pig hunting which I applaud, as this was a "traditional function" of working bulldogs in the South. Feel you are doing an honest assessment of the breed, and really applaud you for wanting to work the dogs AND keep its southern working heritage alive. Was thinking as a possible breeding???? - Colby APBT - if you can find a real breeder of this line...and who is willing to collaborate with you on your efforts. Keep up the great work brother!

    Have you thought of amstaff or bull terrier mix. Some Victorian bulldog might produce what you are looking. My American was the runt. At 2 years only 20 inches at the withers and 80 lbs. Haven't seen a dog more muscular or bulldog with more drive. Will sleep in my arms all day, just as happily run the fields for hours. Either way you don't get into my home without his say or leave without kisses if he likes you

      I haven’t really, just Staffordshire Bull Terrier because I’ve seen what ours can do and how he acts around our animals. With that being all good and his size being small I think that’s the route I’ll try first. Other than him I’ve only considered the White English Bulldogs

    The impact these dogs had on early American cannot be underrated. I wonder if we didn’t have them what the country would look like.

      I believe they we’re definitely essential in the development of this country for sure and I also believe it was a vital role.

    Bringing home a French bulldog pup today. All black male my buddy imported the parents from Serbia so I’m hyped to have something different than what I’m seeing in the market currently.

    I could kinda tell that’s the direction you were goin into. Everyone is so obsessed with making these giant dogs. Bigger isn’t better from my experience. I think downsizing with the staff would be a great idea.

    Would it be possible , that you might use olde English bulldoge. Just an idea, though it might help.

      Thanks for asking but they have no functional muzzle in my opinion. They wouldn’t be a good fit for what I’m looking for. I believe I’ve narrowed it down to the Staffordshire Bull Terrier if I use anything outside of the American Bulldog. I’ve done some extensive research on this subject. Nothing at all wrong with throwing out suggestions though, I definitely appreciate it.

      Have you checked Bruce Huffmaster’s kennel out? If not this ma be of interest to you, he has his old blood line from generations of his family’s working dogs.

      @@johnparog5434 - I know Bruce very well and he does not have any of his family’s old Blood. He had to get completely new dogs because his family’s dogs were not papered. He’s been working on his own family of dogs for a while now but his dogs are also big and I’m looking for smaller dogs.

    Mr Mathews just had a couple of litters of bull dogs. where they too big for your liking? I have a mom who still is active but shes 75 years old, would a black hybrid bulldog from you or Mr Mathews be too big for her?

      I had a dog from Don off of his dog Son. He was the biggest dog I’ve ever owned he was 90+ lbs. He had a decent temperament on him but wasn’t what I was looking for. I want dogs around the 50lb mark. I’ve had a couple around that size and it’s what I’ve grown to like.

    What would you think of an English bull terrier. Very similar to the staff but stands more the size your looking for

    • @prideofthesouthlandkennels
      @prideofthesouthlandkennels  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Size is closer to what I’m looking for but still not there and if I breed to American Bulldog I don’t believe I will get small enough dogs. All of that aside if it wasn’t for that horrible mutated skull of theirs I might consider it if the temperament was there.
      Also, if it wasn’t for our SBT showing the temperament and behavior I’m looking for I don’t believe they would’ve ever been on my radar. Really they are too small of dogs for what I’m looking for but I’m hoping that when bred to one of my American Bulldog productions it will give me something around 50lbs on the first breeding in which I hope I could take and breed back to my original American Bulldog Neyland (69lbs). I’m also in search of genetic diversity which an outcross gives me so I can breed back tight to my Bulldogs. I know a talk a lot about the size but it’s not the only thing I’m looking for in an outcross but it is an important one to me.
      Nice suggestion though my friend 👍🏻

      @pskamericanbulldogsandfarm True the skulls are horrible but I would like to see what the bulldog could do to there stop.
      Temperament wise they are very much like staffies but a bit better with other animals tho can be bad tail chasers for some reason,
      Your staff looks sound I have no doubt you'll have some pups you can use off first breeding.

    I think its going to be hard to find those smaller type bulldogs. What you are doing now is coming close to those smaller oldskool bulldogs.
    Seeing them as puppies on your channel I did not think they would be so "massive" for a standard.
    They really look great and how are they functioning as a allround farm dog?

      @@prideofthesouthlandkennels I think the oldtimers still remember the early Irish staffys that came over to the US. If you outcross them with the Irish staffy you should get a smaller size dog off course but with a lot of drive. I dont think that is what you want in an allround farmdog. If you go for the show type I think you could really get that farmdog you are looking for.

  • @streetrossi937
    @streetrossi937 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    So why don't you go to more of a show line with the american bulldog

    • @prideofthesouthlandkennels
      @prideofthesouthlandkennels  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I don’t want big dogs, and even the standard type dogs that I’ve acquired out of show champions are still very drivey. It’s a misconception of some show dogs inside real working breeds. They are still about that life even though they’re in the show ring.
