Very happy to see this clash. Just wanted to give you an FYI the owner of paper cut patterns was going through a cancer diagnosis pretty recently and had slowed down the business due to this. That could be why they have not released the larger size range.
Oh, that's really sad to hear. I definitely wasn't aware of this, but I wish they had said something about health problems delaying the size expansion on their website. I certainly wouldn't want to be insensitive.
Super plans. Love the look of the Dorian, and feeling prompted to make another pair of Pietras in my current size. I do love the shorts version of the Nellie's for a similar reason. I think the owner of Papercut patterns had a stage 4 breast cancer diagnosis in the midst of the pattern sizing expansion, which is why some have been graded up and some not. Looking forward to this series, although Yorkshiredoesnt seem blessed with many shorts wearing days atm !😊
Thank you, Debs! I've been wanting this kind of shorts in my wardrobe for a while. I wasn't aware of the very sad health problems that the papercut patterns owner is going through. I'm really sorry to hear that.
This will be fun to watch! Looking forward to your trials of these patterns 😁I've not tried that Papercut pattern, but love their pants patterns that I have made. Have fun! I've just finished my first Pietra pants (tapered leg) and have been loving them! You will love the construction of that waistband/facing combo, it's very clever 😁 With any new garment that has gathers, I steam down the gathered area or throw it in the dryer with a damp towel to closer simulate how it will look after laundering; mine didn't have much poof, but this tames it 😉
I have recently made the Pietra shorts and slim leg pants. The shorts are super comfortable- I love them. Lovely construction, these will be made again for sure. Yes they are high waisted but I find that perfect for me. I ended up going down a size as they do come up big. Good luck and I can’t wait for the next episode ❤️
These series are always so interesting. I'm sure I've said it to you before, but I still want to thank you for making it a particular point to advocate for more size inclusivity and for making it an important part of the patterns you choose for yourself. It really means a lot.
Thanks, I always feel conflicted when pattern companies don't have the best size range. I felt like this company has a good history of extending their sizes, so I'm hoping that it will happen.
Always love your Clash of the Patterns. I'd have thought that all three would start out in the same position, otherwise if there were obvious negatives, with all the shorts patterns in the world, maybe I wouldn't pick them. I love all the colors you chose, especially that navy which is a great summer choice. As a stain magnet (am I the only one sitting on a bench who gets dirty all the time?), I do love a darker bottom color. So sorry to hear from these other commenters that the Paper Cut Designer has been very ill. I wish her all the best. xo
I always feel like from the looks of it there are certain patterns that appeal to me more. I also know that the reality isn't always quite how it seems. I'm really sad to hear, as well, about the health problems of the papercut pattern designer. 💔
I'm really excited about this series! I've made the Emerson shorts before and I like them but I need more shorts in my wardrobe and keen to try a different pattern. I love the design of the pocket on the Palisades.
I’m looking forward to this series. The Pietra shirts are on my list of makes this summer. I can’t wait to hear your thoughts and see your progress and final makes.
Yay! I love your Clash of the Patterns series. I’ve made the Pietra several times and have planned to make the Palisades. So, I’m excited to see your results. I recently made the Belize shorts from Itch to Stitch, which have a partially elasticated waistband. I love them!
I feel like you’ve created this series for me 😅 as I’ve been researching flat fronted/elastic back shorts & settled on both the Dorian & Pietras recently so I will be watching these vlogs with keen interest. My stomach is not flat (I’m an apple shape) & lots of people have recommended the Pietras to me. They seem like they are really popular 😊
Oh, yay, I love when you do these! I haven't made any of these patterns, and honestly I don't wear shorts, but I LOVE the look of those cool pockets on the Palisade pattern. Maybe I'll try the pants if the pattern works out well for you... Of course, although I generally wear a size (AU) 14 pants in ready to wear, I'm only a couple of inches inside the size range... Yikes!
I already have a favorite short, and it’s in this challenge, but I am here for this! ❤ I love how these three pattern are similar but still stylistically different.
Love these videos and cannot wait to see how these patterns work out for you. I’ve made the Pietra a while ago and found they were REALLY high waisted (like all the way up to my bust) but I do have a relatively short rise in the front. They were really fun to make though (those pockets especially). I have a Seamwork subscription so I’ll be very interested to see where the Dorian end up on your leaderboard! 😊
I'm really looking forward to this series! I have loved all of your pattern battle series, and I cannot wait for the detailed, informative, and constructive feedback on your experiences with all three patterns, and especially the Pietras, which I have been meaning to try!
Thanks, I always appreciate when people watch the series even when they're not interested in the patterns. And of course, you could always make pants... 😉
@LostMyThread True, but I'm going to be focusing on self-drafted trousers for the next little while, so this is just going to be a spectator sport for me. 🍿
I decided last May 1st to wear shorts and nothing else on the bottom. This is great as I have looked at two of the patterns and wondered. This will help me decide.
clash of the patterns is my favourite!!! SSS. can't wait to see your shorts. and also that floral shirt you have on is beautiful. i love the idea of brightly coloured shorts - I have almost no shorts that are not athletic shorts or shorts to wear under dresses in my wardrobe and think that maybe I could go for a smart summer short - maybe for next summer!
I make the closet core pietra shorts and trousers all the time, for myself and my daughter. I am usually a size 16 but make a size 12, for my daughter I make a size 10 front and size 8 back, this way no bagging on the bottom ❤
Oh wow, that's really interesting to hear. I do have a pretty big hip to waist ratio though, and I worry about being able to get them on if I size down. We will have to see!
Love this! Can’t wait to see the finished garments. I’ve made the Pietra’s but only in the trouser version so will be great to see how they turn out as shorts. Good luck 🎉
I just made a pair of Pietra shorts and I found the construction so satisfying. I really like them but I need to shorten the rise next time, which I worry will be a pain with the pocket and the front facing.
I love the sound of a satisfying construction! I did notice a useful diagram in the instructions that tell you how you need to shorten each piece, so I think it's totally doable!
I know what you mean with shorts and pants and the elastic issue. I’m very curvy with a full belly. I made the Weston shorts by Seamwork and I really love the cut of them. They don’t have elastic or pockets but you could add patch pockets easily and if elastic was very important, you could modify the pattern to include a length of elastic in the back or sides.
I’ve made 2 of these 3 patterns - Palisade and Pietra (although as shorts, only the Pietra, made in advance of doing them as long wide legs in a beautiful fabric), and I have very similar concerns about the diaper butt issue. I actually made fairly extensive mods to both patterns to go around this. I removed quite a lot of fabric (3”+) from the back waistband, both by angling the side seam and adding darts, and then added the side zip. Huge difference in the look and comfort. Similarly for Palisade, removed even more (3.5”+), plus the back darts, and then added a fly front closure. I also modified the “saddle” line of the crotch to fit more closely to my butt. This is a very long way of saying that I have come to accept that pants just don’t fit me out of the package, and that’s okay. Super interested in this matchup!
Ooooh this is so exciting! I've only made the Pietras, back in my super beginner days, and I really like them! They really have that sleek look you described. I have a Seamwork membership but haven't made these... So curious to see how they turn out.
One quick thing about the Pietras that I remember is that the pocket piece looks very similar on the bottom and top (there are prob notches but can't remember exactly) and I ended up sewing it incorrectly, so keep an eye out! Might have just been a beginner error tho 😬
Well, that's fun to hear. Having looked at the pattern pieces, there are notches, but I could totally see a beginner getting mixed up with that. You should definitely revisit it, though!
I'm interested to see how this video turns out as I have looked at the Pietra pants and I also have the seamwork pattern. I have a similar body to you although currently struggling with a changing shape due to perimenopause. On a different subject, I love your blouse. What pattern is it please?
Totally with you on the changing shape, which is making the elastic waist so much more appealing. It sounds like you are definitely on the same wavelength with the style. I always put what I'm wearing in the description box, and this is the Lemont Top by Itch to Stitch in a floral cotton dobby from Sew Me Sunshine
I’ve made both the Pietra’s and Palisades, and I definitely prefer the Palisades. I’m two sizes between waist and hip, but the Pietra’s are SO difficult to take on and off, but I hate invisible zippers, so I probably won’t make them again. Sounds like you probably won’t have that problem though.
If you have never made the Palisade pants/shorts before, you may want to toile them. I am also pear-shaped, and regardless of the elastic, they have a lot of bulk around the hip area because you end up with 3 or 4 layers of fabric around the pockets. I like them, but something to think about.
That's definitely an interesting point. I guess that might be more of an issue if you have thicker or more structured fabrics. I'll have to see how these go!
I own the Pietra but I haven't yet made any. I am curious about the Dorian shorts. I love the Palisade pockets too. I have some palazzo pants I made and converted the gathered waist to a flat front similar to the Palisade and it does look fine. The waist elastic runs through the waistband (anchored center back) so I can adjust the gathers. They are a full pant though so I don't know if the comparison would be similar.
I've made the Palisade pants & shorts before. I found the double pockets too bulky so I modified them when making shorts so they have just one set of the slanted pockets which was better. The rise was also too high on me (I have a short torso.) but not hard to modify. I've always been curious about the differences between the Palisade and the Pietra patterns so I'll be interested in hearing your comparison. I did not find the gathering very much at all on the Palisade, so I don't think you'll have any bulk, especially in the fabrics you're using which are similar to what I made my shorts out of. Thanks for sharing!
I’m eager to see the rest of this smackdown. I enjoy making the eucalyptus shorts by mood fabric but I’m looking for a shorts pattern that has an elastic waist.
Shorts are not on my summer makes plans. I have only made fully elastic waist ones and wasn't fond of the finished look on me. Also found the pockets weren't practical. I look forward to the results of this series and may add shorts to next year's plans.
I'm trying to pick a Smart shorts pattern. I'm less concerned with my waistband. I am trying to figure out where I want the hem to fall (length) and circumference at the hem. I want something straightish but coming over my hips and tummy, there is a lot of width Upon your observation, ill try 4-4.5 inseam on my next pair
While I am all for being inclusice, given the fact that you yourself are concerned about how the fullness of certain of the patterns may not look good for your body type, does it then make sense to have an extended size range for all the patterns? It may be not a bad idea to disuade certain sizes from making certain patterns?
I think it's more a question of body shape rather than size. When I look at the fuller sized models wearing the patterns that do come in an extended size, I think they look awesome!
I know you are following the patterns for this challenge, but did out darts and an invisible zipper in the pietra shorts. I too worried about all the bulk.
I do get it, but I'm hoping that I can find something that doesn't require an invisible zipper. I find those very awkward to do up, especially when my bust gets in the way. 🙈

Oh wow, those are such great tips! Thank you! And I do love a satisfying construction. I'm looking forward to putting all of these together!
Excited to see this clash of the patterns, I'm also hesitant about elasticated back pants and it looking like a diaper. Looking forward to this one.
Crossing my fingers! 🤞
I have recently made the Pietra shorts and slim leg pants. The shorts are super comfortable- I love them. Lovely construction, these will be made again for sure. Thank you Theresa, I really enjoy your Clash of the Pattern series. Looking forward to the next video.
Thank you, I really enjoy them too!
I'm excited to see your review of these shorts.
Got to hear! I hope you enjoy.
Interesting idea for a series. As a fellow pear shape I’m particularly excited to see what difference if any comes from the different patterns.
Awesome! I hope it turns out to be useful for you.

Thanks for your strategic approach and sharing this series.
It's definitely the way my mind works!
I always love your clash of the patterns series! So although my shorts-wearing days are behind me, I'm looking forward to watching these videos 😊
Hey, these can all be made into pants too! 😉
Fabrics are beautiful..... good luck 😊
Thank you! I feel like I sent a pretty good chance out of these...
Oooh I’m so excited for this such a great video idea 🙌
Awesome, happy to hear it!
All over this clash! Thanks so much for putting these together … watching with interest 🩳

Oooh love these vids! Thanks for making them!
Yay, thanks!
So far, My favorite of this type uses the I2S Belize shorts.
Oh no, not another one! 😂 I definitely can't add another to this list, but I will be checking that one out, for sure.
I already have a favorite short, and it’s in this challenge, but I am here for this! ❤ I love how these three pattern are similar but still stylistically different.
Yeah, they really had a lot in common. It will be interesting to see how they compare.
Excited to see this as I have the Pietra and the palisade pants
Oh, cool! I hope I give some useful information!
Love these videos and cannot wait to see how these patterns work out for you. Awesome! I'm curious to see how they come out. I tend to have a high waist, and usually have to lengthen the rise on mine. We will see!
Beautiful shade of yellow/green!
Totally agree!
I'm with you about the waistband....I'm not a kid anymore and have had two big babies, high waisted please!
I only recently realized the joys of high-waisted. I'm in the process of getting more high-waisted things into my wardrobe!
I'm really looking forward to this series! I have loved all of your pattern battle series, and I cannot wait for the detailed, informative, and constructive feedback on your experiences with all three patterns, and especially the Pietras, which I have been meaning to try!
Thanks, Fatmata! I'm sure I'll find a winner out of this lot.

I’ve made 2 of these 3 patterns - Palisade and Pietra (although as shorts, only the Pietra, made in advance of doing them as long wide legs in a beautiful fabric), and I have very similar concerns about the diaper butt issue. It's so true. The initial pattern can be a launching off point. I definitely won't write them off if I don't love them out of the box!

Excellent! I'm hoping that this will give you some alternatives.
Shorts are not on my summer makes plans. I have only made fully elastic waist ones and wasn't fond of the finished look on me. Also found the pockets weren't practical. I look forward to the results of this series and may add shorts to next year's plans.
