  • It's time to listen to MANY metal voices join together, and what better way to analyze all of them than to invite the master of grunts and gurgles (Mark, from Kardavox Academy) to join?
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff and metalhead/pro vocal coach Mark Garrett, as they both listen to Van Canto for the first time (featuring Grave Digger!), in their music video "Rebellion."

first time I heard them I also thought it was a bit sad it wasn't full acapella because of the drums... and I'm glad she also mentioned that too. I understand it is almost impossible for a beatboxer to perform a metal drummer... but... what about 2 beatboxers playing together? I always thought that might be an interesting solution for it :)

Seen Van Canto performing live twice, Can confirm they do do the "guitar" solos with their voices

  •  3 ปีที่แล้ว +32

Regarding the question, why they decided to use drummer. This is from FAQ on their website:
"Why do you use drums, an a-capella-band usually doesn’t have a drummer?
Well, we tried some guys imitating a double-bassdrum only with their voices, but they all collapsed after 2 minutes of “Lifetime”."
    😂
But anyway, Van Canto is awesome! I like their original songs more than covers. I really love their album Voices of Fire, and it's even accompanied by a fantasy book!
And seeing this guys live was one of the best live experiences! They are even better live than in studio. 😍

Great to see you reacting to this!
Grave Digger is one of those underrated German power metal bands from the 80's. (In my personal opinion at least. I love them, but can see why Chris' voice may not be for everyone.:))
Van Canto is also one of those hidden gems, which I personally didn't discover until just a few years ago. Lots of interesting stuff going on, although they aren't technically all acapella.
All that said, this isn't exactly the best song to showcase the latter of them (though it's one of Grave Digger's most famous). Hope you take some time to check out a few more songs with Van Canto after listening to this one! :)

For the pronunciation of Van Canto, imagine how a German would say the name (the band is German, after all), but in this case, the V is still a V [v] sound, not an F [f]. So the pronunciation would turn out as “vahn cahnto.” The current lineup for the band are two lead vocals, high guitar, low guitar, two basses, and drums. In this Rebellion video, the lineup consisted of two lead singers (male and female), high guitar, low guitar, bass, and drums. As a few people have already said, they did try using a beat boxer, but the people they auditioned didn’t have the stamina necessary for metal drumming, which demands a lot more than what beat boxers may normally do in an a cappella group.
I think their song “Lost Forever” is a better representation of the Van Canto sound, but I’m glad you gave them a listen nonetheless. I do recommend reacting to “Lost Forever” as well. They also have a GREAT cover of Metallica’s “Master of Puppets,” but there is no music video nor a good live video (bad sound mixing) for that song. The guys singing the guitar parts add a bit of grit to their sound (one of the band members describes it as a “crunch”) to better mimic the distortion of a guitar. The guy who sings the lower guitar part also sings the guitar solos, and he uses electronic distortion during those solos.
They also have a great cover of “The Final Countdown,” come to think of it. I think you’d really enjoy it.

@@TheCharismaticVoice Yes, Lost Forever would be my recommendation as well. Rebellion is a nice tune and great cover but not representative. As you noticed in the reaction it sounded like it Power Metal coming up but then it wasn't exactly Power Metal. That's because their originals usually are Power Metal but this cover is not. So for full display of their vocal abilities checkout an original. Also, a few years ago their male lead singer quit and the new one has a pretty different voice. Which I just can't get into, unfortunately. So I recommend the older stuff generally, ie. older then the last album. :)

They chose real drums for two reasons:

I read a bit a few years ago saying they use a drum kit because they couldn't find anyone who could sing extended kick blast parts for a full song without passing put before the end.
As for the "guitar" solo, I'm absolutely not a singer so it was probably a terrible way of doing it but the closest I've managed to approximate while driving and listening was sort of humming with a weird bit of distortion thrown in, but they show the singer doing it in one of the metallica cover videos they did

I love this! Karavox is one of the 3 reaction channels I follow along with yours, and it's so nice to see you two doing a collab!
I haven't done this before, so I hope you still consider recommendations from your comments....But every time I have commented you have read it so I hope you read this!! I would really like to hear what you think of the vocals for Dissona. Unfortunately, they are a very small prog metal band and don't have many videos up. The one I personally think (based on your past videos) you would get a lot to talk about in vocally and compositionally is Dissona - Another Sky (Guitar Playthrough), but the video itself is only of the guitarist. Another song that is a full band playthrough and shows some nice profile shots of the singer is Dissona - Lysis (Full Band Playthrough), but he showcases less of his range and dexterity there.
    Thanks!

Thanks for reacting to Van Canto, and the technique discussions, you and Mark worked pretty well together :) Rebellion is a very fun song, but there are others that show off what they can do a lot better, especially Inga Scharf, their female singer:-
    Wishmaster (Nightwish)
    - there's a live version of this at Wacken with Tarja, though the sound quality isn't great
    Master of Puppets (Metallica)
Fear of the Dark (Iron Maiden)
Speed of Light (their own song)

Thanks for featuring this band to react to. I've been waiting quite a while time for someone to provide some solid insights, and I really appreciate it. Each one is a great vocalist on their own and while some can't get get the idea of heavy a capella, I was pretty impressed. I believe the solo was done by plugging a microphone into a mixer before plugging into to a guitar amp and having Stef sing the notes.
I'm hoping this won't be your last reaction to this band, the female vocalist is quite impressive. Their covers of "Wishmaster" or "Fear of the Dark" definitely give their vocalists a bit more time to shine. I did manage to find a decent "Fear of the Dark" rendition live.

  • @FrauKreuzweise

The guitar sound is produced through singing amplified through a guitar-amp with distortion - whole 'secret' :) and Van Canto explain it themselves in one of their 'how to sing Metal A Capella' - Videos (have a look, not hard to find)!

Having seen Van Canto live I was extremely amazed how great they sound live. I totally expected the whole thing to be lackluster as hell and that there was a huge amount of post production needed to make the guitars sound so lifelike. But they 100% crushed it and delivered a really amazing show.

The reason they have a drummer rather than a beatboxer was because a lot of metal songs require very fast drums that go on for a long time. They tried different beatboxers when starting the band but people would pass out during try-outs. So they went for a real drummer instead.
