I think there's a Scandinavian country that it's confusing how many kings they had with a certain name because there were so many and some of the ordinal numbers got skipped.

The book "The Disappearing Spoon" (Sam Kean) offers in chapter 13 an interesting insight into King Midas: the tin mines in his kingdom had a higher-than-typical concentration of zinc. Thus, while he was a Bronze Age king, the metal in his kingdom would have been a material not seen elsewhere--brass. It's not hard to imagine that some travelers who saw peasants using gold-colored tools could have thought that the kingdom had a limitless supply of gold.

I started reading a comic recently called The Masked Fables and it has a prophetic hitlist of evil spirits ruining fairy tales and myths in it where Midas seems to be a potential future character (the line in the prophecy refers to "The Ruler with a king who reigns with bountiful hands") so this is pretty great atm.
In case anyone is curious, it has already concluded its first story arc with Snow White, next up is confirmed to be Peter Pan. The full prophecy is:
The Lover with a maiden who traded her heart
The Explorer with a wanderer who constantly chases a new start.
The Orphan with a boy who is forever lost
The Scholar with a pupil who seeks knowledge at any cost
The Child with a son who can not tell a lie
The Sage with a hero who refuses to die
The Caretaker with a soul who's voice is forsaken
The Artist with a craftsmen whoes eyes have been taken
The Rebel with a lord who is resolute where he stands
The Ruler with a king who reigns with bountiful hands
The Jester with an idler whose smile must never cease
And the Warrior with a killer who will never find peace

    • @rickypedia999
      @rickypedia999 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Some popular guesses so far:
A son who can not tell a lie: Pinocchio
A soul who's voice is forsaken: Little Mermaid
A king who reigns with bountiful hands: Midas
An idler who's smile must never cease: Alice in Wonderland (I don't think so, though, I'm going with a more obscure Russian tale called Emelya and the Magic Fish)
Hero who refuses to die: Rumplestitskin (or rather, the maiden in the story)
A pupil who seeks knowledge at any cost: Merlin
A killer who will never find peace: the Huntsman (already a character in Snow White and appears here as an antagonist)

I've had a theory since the first time I heard the Midas Touch story. What if Midas had lost his hands and needed prosthetics? Being a very wealthy king of a gold rich territory, he would have had them made in ostentatious fashion. The story of Midas Goldhands could easily have changed into a legend about a king whose touch to changed everything to gold within a few tellings. That is assuming that there is even a grain truth to his existence.

In one kids' adaptation of Greek myths I read in elementary school, the two Midas myths were tied together rather neatly. Midas' golden touch wasn't granted by Dionysus, but by Apollo in a sort of "be-careful-what-you-wish-for" deal. You see, Midas had scorned Apollo's careless scattering of gold (that is, the sun's rays) over all the earth, and wished that he had the ability to turn everything he touched to gold--he wouldn't be so foolish and wasteful as Apollo. So Apollo granted his wish, and the usual version of the myth (golden princess and all) went on from there. When he begged the gods to remove the golden touch, Apollo appeared before him to rebuke him for his blasphemy. He removed the curse, but didn't let Midas off that easily...since Midas had been so stubborn and foolish to blaspheme the son of Zeus, he would bear the ears of a mule. So the other part of the myth went the same way....but in this version, once Midas realized how his secret had been revealed, he forgave his servant and publicly confessed his blasphemy and its consequences, and the mule's ears vanished now that Midas had shown proper respect for the gods.

Origins of Eris from Greek mythology. Btw, I watched your Aphrodite episode earlier and noticed you said Eris was the goddess of disagreement. That's incorrect, as she's the goddess of chaos. Hope to see some Sinbad footage of course.

King midas is also referenced in the movie "Siegfried and Roy: masters of the impossible". He has a daughter called Estella and a son called Mallory. The Midas curse is given to king Midas by the deadly sin named, Avarice, the iniquity of greed. Estella falls to the curse of the golden touch that with every touch, gold is taken from the earth and used to coat the thing Midas touched. Mallory is controlled by Marzot, the personification of envy due to him being envious of his father, because he wanted his father's kingdom. The river pactolus was used a the lair for Medusa which Siegfried and Roy go to, to get some of it's water to use on Midas to cure him of the golden touch curse and to free Midas from the entity, greed.

His collection of stories, under the titles of "A Wonder Book" and "Tanglewood Tales" was my introduction to ancient Greek mythology at a very early age. The first one I read, "The Chimera", is still my favorite of them.

In Star Wars there is a scene in which Han Solo shot an enemy underneath a table (killing him) with a hidden gun, however when Disney took over the Star Wars franchise they edited it in order to make it appear as although the enemy shot first and Han was merely defending himself, which upset Star Wars fans, in turn forming the phrase Han Shot First.
