      Yes, it's extraordinary. Thank God for Britain and all it's done for the world. Of all the cultures I've visited around the planet, their history being read, British values, together with the founding of America and it's Constitution, is my favorite. Abolishment of slavery, modern democracy and parliamentarism, and sympathetic, gentlemanly attitudes, the Scottish and English Enlightenment, et c. In Victorian times the Empire was the conscience of the world introducing order, justice and progress. There are of course bad rumors, but they are highly politically motivated.

  • @bilindalaw-morley161
    @bilindalaw-morley161 2 ปีที่แล้ว +55

    Jumping in before I get completely immersed, just to say one of the many things I immediately appreciate is that the people responsible allowed Harriet to be as she is in the books. They didn’t ‘beautify’/ glamorise her, with bright red lipstick etc, or insist on a wardrobe not suitable to the literary character.
    Sir Edward Petherbridge was born to play this role, and his portrayal is admirable; his appearance, characteristics are faithful to the role. He’s such a natural, it’s a challenge sometimes to believe he’s acting at all! We feel his heart pain with him, desperately want to see his love openly returned, but the romance rejection doesn’t take over, and Lord Peter never descends to pathos, or self pity.
    Scripts follow the books quite well, all of the productions are faithful to the fiction, and extremely well done.
    I don’t disrespect Ian Carmichael’s acting, he just isn’t Wimsey for me.
    Thank you very much for this upload and the others. Your time and trouble are appreciated.

    It is crucial to the plot, that our good Lord was able to identify the owner (the first owner, that is) of the murder weapon. It is symptomatic of the way mysteries are dramatised, however, that large gaps are (unfortunately for the viewer) left in the plot, and there's no explanation of how he knew the owner or how to find him.

    • @voraciousreader3341
      @voraciousreader3341 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Laurence Fox??? I think he’d be completely wrong! For one thing, he’s too young, and Petherbridge was far too old when these were done; if he’d been 15 years younger he would have been much better. And “Bunter” is completely miscast, to the point that I can’t watch his major scenes and have to fast forward through them! Harriet Walter was excellent, I totally agree there.

    • @frances6940
      @frances6940 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@voraciousreader3341Laurence Fox is 45 ( as of 2023) and Edward Petheridge was 51 in 1987 when this was filmed. Lord Peter was 45 when he married Harriet so presumably he was early to mid forties during this story. So perhaps Edward Petheridge was slightly older than ideal (but he is still my favourite Lord Peter). The timeline in the books differs from the TV series because in the books the three stories covering the courtship were spread over about 5 years ( with other investigations interspersed) whereas, in the TV series, they appear to be one after the other. I think Laurence Fox would be very suitable if they did a remake: he has an interesting face but is not conventionally handsome in a Cary Grant kind of way. Lord Peter and Harriet are both survivors of difficult life experiences and I think this is what makes the story arc so wonderful and poignant: one knows that when she finally says yes they are mature people who are making a commitment to love and cherish each other.
