I am someone who's also establishing my art career who's also in my 30s, I am also bothered by where our society is heading. I feel like people nowadays are not conscious of how many hours they're wasting just scrolling social media, adding absolutely nothing in their life, just unnecessary anxieties and negative emotion(I mean it can also inspire people, but it can also be a source of toxicity if too much). As someone who's goal is to be successful in art and who also started late, i will not waste my time further by being too addicted to social media.
Do not tack this on zoomers. Who the hell coded the algorithms that these things rely on and make these platforms addictive? It sure as hell wasn't boomers. So much for us millennials being better. We can still help though, but not by passing on the blame.

This endless scrolling is really scary. Its almost like a worldwide disease. Even in my household, people barely talk to each other and they just scroll on their phones the whole day. Thank you Tyler for spreading the word. You are one of the real ones out there in the art community.
So glad I'm a hobbyist. Balancing improving your art while thinking of outreach, social media, educational institution and later career position acceptance seems incredibly draining. Can just stay unseen, do my thing, keep on growing without distractions. Any art content consumed that are not in-depth lessons or worklows of artists is purely for the entertainment value
As someone who consistently looks for art content to learn from, I find TH-cam to be one of the better places, with a caveat. You are absolutely right that browsing TH-cam art creators should have a point, and it shouldn't be everything you do. What I find works is I find a lesson on a specific aspect of art that I want to know more about (lighting, color theory, etc) and then after the video ends (and sometimes with a rewatch) I go through my program and try to implement the theory in practice. I find the more I do this the more I internalize the lessons.

Thank you so much for that, You actually made me uninstall Tiktok. Having tons of saved short tutorials videos, that never been watched again or applied, hit so close to home. I've been lying to my self for the longest time, that watching these videos helps me improve, but thanks to you i started thinking about it and realised, that i'm not learning as much as i mindlessly scroll on Tiktok. I used to learn so much years ago on youtube or skillshare from longer videos made by actual professional. They teach one subject so i had to focus on one thing for weeks, improve, then move for a next subject. Nowadays i'm not as productive. I haven't learned much and I'm failing at my art school, just because i'm have no time to draw and my destroyed attention span is keeping me from focusing on it. It's destroying my mental health, without drawing daily I feel like I'm losing purpose. I'd like to add that art side of Tiktok is full of unnecessary drama, heavily edited videos and lately AI too. Sometimes it's a really toxic place for beginners.

It literally ruined everything.. we artists have to be good actors n entertainers now along with practicing our art. I m 32 n i started taking art seriously 2 years ago.. i want to be an independent artist n creator and I do it via my TH-cam channel sharing no bullshit art videos, timelapses, tutorials and all and I will continue to do so because I feel that there needs to be some of us who can actually do good art n pass it on to the next generation. I’ve bought Aaron Blaise classes as a high schooler and really took my animals art work above a beginner not entirely professional but you could look at it an instant say it was a good looking lion or wolf fast forward I now use Instagram and have stopped improving and I was angry like why am I not getting the same looking at this video it very clear I’m an artist that needs 40 minutes to an hour of a lesson to really absorb what I’m actually doing and should look for as an artist. thank you for bringing up this topic I’ve had something to think about and I feel much better as I look where I am in my art skills.
This is technically correct, the best kind of correct. I think it would be more accurate to say that tiktok is ruining people's ability to learn or focus on art by turning everything into edutainment, it's difficult to take the lessons seriously, it's more like background noise, constant reassurance or voice in your head that stabilizes your identity as an artist by adding things to your mental list of trivial facts and surface level information. FOMO adds to this effect as well as being out of the loop on the latest and greatest will make people insecure and the content pipeline feeds off of that feeling. A lot of people who are not secure in their position or confident in their ability or that they understand art as much as they should, there's an infinite amount of information that is meant to provide a solution to an infinite amount of hyper specific problems, perpetual student mindset might be hurting hobbyists the most as a result. Oh right, this reminds me of the hustle culture aspect that affects artists, you know the spiel, not earning from your work can take a toll on confidence and therefore the analysis paralysis persists. It would be much better if people could come up with their own solutions to specific problems so they're simulatenously learning and applying the technique. But the challenge comes from ability to perceive something about the process as a problem to solve. The programmer mindset always seeks problems to solve and optimize for efficiency and ease of use but in the end it feels like less work is actually being done and more time is spent on tinkering with the tools. It's hard to work out what lifestyle choices should everyone follow, hammer the technique or be inventive, not like we invented a way for passive learners to get the RIGHT information they actually need to solve their problems which they don't even know they have. Strange, isn't it? In my personal story, I am stuck in the beginner phase for my whole life up to this point because of my ADHD, I'm not just an artist who uses krita/CSP but also a game developer, music producer, 3D modeler, webdev, computer soft/hardware nerd and terminally online essayist as seen in this comment. This video wasn't really targeted towards me but it persisted at the top of my recommended for a short while before I finally induldged during my yet another day long video binging session, it is tangentially related to my problem in this case. I am painfully self-aware of habit and I haven't stumbled upon the right answer yet nor have I come up with my own solution yet, despite meditating on the subject occasionally. I wish best of luck to everyone else, including neurotypicals.
For all the people saying this is not a big deal (especially compared to ai) Think to yourself, is it better to have good artists than may be replaced, or having no good artists at all, that could potentially rise up against ai? I'm a classical painter/2D animator. And recently I've noticed this happening to most artists as well. Big thanks for pointing this out for more people 🙏 It's hard to accept at first, but people's taste is absolutely ruined (especially more young artist). It feels like people are trying to avoid learning art WHILE trying to learn art. I have a more old fashioned approach towards art (even tho I don't work in a classical environment), and I prefer to distance myself from what is going on the internet, and it surprises me each time how younger artists have no idea how to rate art quality. Most of the works out there are beginner quality art. And since this is usually the only type of art people are exposed to, it becomes the only standard. We have a small rule in classic art, "if it looks good, it doesn't mean it is good". A good view of an artwork is for the common viewers. If you're trying to be an artist, you need to question yourself more. It is especially important with the presence of AI, because it simply clarifies and increases the gap between real artists, with hardcore knowledge baggage on their back, and modern intermediate artists. This sounds harsh. I'm sorry if I made anyone mad or upset. But art is very disciplined and fluid. If you can't contain both, you simply lose your title as an "artist". And you become someone who simply draws well. But not, an artist. I really hope people will become more aware of this topic
It might be constructive to recommend HOW people can learn to rate good art, in your estimation, rather than speak in generalizations, and imply people who don't know what you know aren't artists lmao. Just some constructive feedback. People might be more willing to see your point of view if you have some immediately actionable things to learn. Rating art quality is VAGUE and people are likely to be unsure what exactly you think they should be doing.
Thank you for pointing this out. I predicted years ago this would happen, cause it already was in progress: the AI is going to surpass real artists and everyone else, not just because of it's own advancement, but because the states and supranational organizations are waging a mind war against humans on multiple levels, so AI is getting better, but WE are getting worse too! It's not just about controlling the output/offer (that's old totalitarianism), it's about controlling the input/demand. People like or care about their fellow humans less and less, and therefore they won't have issues in creating or accepting machines to replace them. Our art, culture, politics, philosophy, values, etc., are all decaying, and the artificial technocratic world of the future looks more enticing in contrast, or at least not so bad. And if people with heavy internet use continue to think that drawing cute anime chicks in social media or doing throwaway concept art work for mega-corporations to sell entertainment products is "real art" (as in ideal, or the best, or just as good as original fine arts), then the AI will have an easy job, and we'll also poison the taste and apreciation of future generations of humans. The victimization from the art world needs to stop or we're gonna defeat ourselves with it. Painters, singers, actors, writers, etc., can't just complain about competition forever, whether it's human or artificial, money based or fame based. We need to get our sh-t together, and do our best, and keep ourselves accountable, like real people with real free will.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts! This year, I've learned and finally realized that every time I face a challenge, my mind tries distract me from solving it by endless scrolling on tiktok. By the time I noticed what happened, I had already lost the energy, focus and motivation. This habit of running away from reality consumes almost every positive aspect of life. We should really reconsider the social media's place in our lives and always ask ourselves "What for?", before spending another hour on consuming junk food information.
Don't just reconsider social media, it can be anything from food, conversations, gaming, art research itself, streams, etc. I recommend you read books by Steven Pressfield, he talks a lot about this resistance you discovered.
I cant get behind tiktok. I had it once and it was a waste of time. I'm making a webcomic and always doing studies...i just don't have time to chase down trending sounds and editing snappy art videos. I'm documenting my progress here on youtube and have found it to be a better use of my time. But that's mostly it. My screen time has reduced significantly.
Fun fact: Since years I was saying the same thing about the TH-cam. Remember the Books? Those "tutorials" that took months, sometimes years to properly research and write. So only the true masters of the craft could afford to do it, often as their retirement job. Yeah, I miss them too 😂 Right now everyone can teach others on youtube and filtering out the good one's (like you) from bad ones' turns into a waste of precious time. This sadly happens in every craft, not only art. Properly researched and prepared coursebooks are being replaced by fragmentary tutorials made with feeding the algorithm in mind. I wonder how many artists actually started with Loomis like my generation of early internet used to.

Actually I never used TIKTOK, and 2 year back it was ban in India, anyway it good for us, I am reducing my time on social media, and trying to be productive in my work, as Software engineer and drawing as hobby, it quit amazing
I absolutely hate this era of short form video content and the endless scrolling. I want to see the art AS IS. not videos of trendy audio and the artist putting one stroke of paint on a painting that is basically finished already. I miss when sites were places to share your art not content to be consumed.
I do not take lessons if they do not contain the following elements: 1) basic geometry (straight lines and curves and their use in forming the silhouette); shaping body shapes through primitive geometric shapes. a) anatomy b) styling and design 2) Perspective 3) Lighting 4) Color and Color Hierarchy
I am feeling this so much just with instagram as well. I had 108k followers on instagram for my art but I just felt like having to be this consistent art machine posting the same content over and over was really stagnating my art growth. Now, I've started posting less and less but when I do post I feel it is more of substance and that my art is actually growing now from what I was just massproducing before. I took a massive hit to my engagement and am bleeding followers. I've lost 3k and expect to keep losing more and more. I just refuse to keep playing this game with social media that has only forced me to draw within this specific niche and never expand my skillset. It definitely sucks, especially because social media convinces you that followers mean everything, but I know this is better for my art in the long run.
I think what is scary is more and more the reliability of social media to the people hiring you and also (this one is scary) education. Many too many schools are starting to look up the following base of people applying and take that as a possible successful student. I want something else than social media to get me work but unfortunately its getting difficult unless youve got some networking and living in a place where art and culture have more presence.
I wrote a bit a number of years ago about "tutorial addiction" which I think is partially the problem with the short form video issue now. Not enough artists want to sit down for an in depth lesson thanks to what social media has done to us as a society. That said even some of the people going for the longer lessons never bother to actually do anything more than watch for the sake of entertainment.
I think what you are saying makes a lot of sense. I’m a Graphic Design student and can’t help but notice that the portfolio of the professionals I’ve met are not nearly as flashy as the work of my favorite social media influencers. This is definitely an important distinction to make as I traverse my creative journey. Do I want to be an influencer or do I want to work for a company. I can see the benefits of both.
I’m 25, and I recently (about 6 months ago at this point) got my first full time studio art job. I have never been on Tik Tok, and tbh I haven’t posted to social media (besides my own website) in 3+ years at this point. What I did instead, is I knuckled down, and focused on improving by studying the fundamentals and learning how to apply them. I’m so grateful I used my time to better my skills and portfolio rather than try and keep up with this new social media landscape. At this point, I’m not sure I’ll ever go back to posting my work online, unless we shift back away from the need to pump out constant entertainment rather than just art.
This is a great video Tyler! You've neatly summarised what I've been worried about for a while now. It's always tempting to sell my soul and make snappy instagram reels, even if I know they would make me miserable. I think I'll stick to my guns with some longer-form content.

I couldn't agree more with this video. Tiktok is great for figuring out short specific actions, for example, "how to extrude along normals in blender". Difficult concepts however are damn near impossible to learn in a 1-minute video
He touched upon the subject of ai yesterday in a livestream. The gist of was to not give up, and to embrace and use it to a degree (moral standards are important here). Otherwise we risk falling behind the rest of the world who will be making use of ai.

Even AI isn’t the largest issue. The whole mindset driving both points to the alienation of the public from the arts and art making in general. In some ways we’ve done this to ourselves as the artists of the past once insisted on the idea that art and creativity are some sort of mystical endeavor while also failing to teach basic art skills in a non-confusing way to younger generations, to the point there the average person who would otherwise say that everything takes hard work, is still convinced that art is only for the gifted. That didn’t come from them. That mentality came from artists who became esoteric about art. If we want better treatment, aside from fighting for our rights, we also have to put art back into the hands of the people, not just as a product but as an accessible skill no different than coding.
If someone doesn't know they're taking bad advice and learning things the wrong way, then whether or not they learn from TikTok or TH-cam or an art institute isn't going to make any difference at all. I work in kitchen design and some students I've seen come out of certified design schools make absolutely atrocious design concepts, and some people who have never opened a design textbook create stunning design concepts.
Saved posts or reels I have used some, mostly ones with pose references if pinterest ain't working, but not gonna lie yes for sure. A HUGE problem for me is having so much stimuli but having no clear direction of where to go, and also important the CONFIDENCE within myself to actually see and push myself in the direction of a job for someone else or for myself. A lot of it is consumption of ideas, observation is good, but not much in terms of production for myself and building my own self-esteem. It requires me to act upon those posts, but damn is it so unclear.
I love the highlight on grinding to level up. Social media polarizes this instant self made person..... no one is self made we learn on the hands of giants and the polarizingf social media doesnt help us learn and grow.
yes definitely! I don't learn from those type of videos. I need something that is more long form or it's useless. That is why I usually just break down and pay for courses, cause at the end of the day I need to make sure I am doing things that make me make progress. Otherwise what's the point. Great points.
I'm going to disagree partly and say that short form delivery is not inherently an antithesis to learning good art. To me it really depends on where you are in your art and what you're trying to learn. I've viewed quick tips multiple times where they point out a small anatomy mistakes, and I was instantly able to apply to my art for the better. Sometimes, long drawn out sessions where you dissect every little tid-bit can have the opposite effect of not being engaging enough. Enveloping your world with art is the biggest boon to doing more art. Sometimes that quick hit is what I need to give me the inspiration to pick up the pen. It makes art approachable. I can't dedicate hours every time I want to learn something, and I don't think the expectation is that all practice should be that way to progress. I currently have like 10 tabs open with hours long videos that I haven't been able to sit down with for weeks because it feels daunting. For someone that's been doing art for years and years, you already know a lot, so I think it's easy to forget that just getting started is fundamentally different. I think short form content can be the catalyst for learning more, easing people into the idea of diving deeper into learning what it takes to make the things they want to. I do agree, not all learning should be short form, and could create false impressions, but I don't really think many people do it that way. At least, not so many people that it would drastically change how the artworld as a whole functions. I don't think Tiktok trends will be ruining artists or art journeys, it's just simply another path that exists on the road to improvement.
I respect your channel. Good video as always! Really nice to watch your work. You have a very nice and neat Art technique at work. If I may share my opinion, you are right about Art skills and the direction that is recommended for Art beginners to go, but I think you are missing the "point of view" moment. This moment is key. A "point of view moment" is that pivotal moment separating our personal goals, views, and opinions from one another. But this moment is key and it determines the direction of the respective individual. For example, I think that example you give as bad example some kind Anime sketch form is not necessarily bad to be a goal for somebody. I think it's more about what students want to do. If they want them to use Art for sketches, basics comics drawings like, you know, thumbnails, storyboards, or quick design sketches, or children's doodles, that's their choice with such direction is good. But it's almost pointless for me to say it since you more or less said it, so yeah...just my first comment on your channel.😁
I love your tutorials and art talks. It contains so much useful information that I can use. I have a question how do you deal with stagnation in art, where it seems you are not improving in spite of all the exercises/ practices done.
If you are experiencing this you need good feedback. A fresh set of trained eyes can tell you exactly what you need to do more or less of. A good community or mentor would be the way work through this. Chances are you are making mistakes without knowing and they are turning into bad habits
I agreed with your points but i feel like Art has always been a popularity contest since the dawn of internet, the piece with the most view/share/engagement is always the one that had "content" in them (quick example would be fanart or short comic), Tiktok just happen to push that to the extreme. The problems i have is with these tutorials, there's always a "tips and tricks" to cover your weakness, Art aint no trick, you cant hide your weakness forever, i hate to sound old school but there's a lack of fundamental in art on social media , people end up stuck in there comfort zone and draw the same thing they are good at over and over and end up calling its their "style" instead of expand their skillset.
Checked out some art tiktoks and comments and now i do wanna say. As much as we worry about ai. There is value in this video. I am seeing a lot of impatient young people. People who can not sit through long form education because they just want simple answers handed to them on a spoon. Dont want to struggle dont want to google. So good video! Important lessons! Hopefully they watch this without asking chatgpt for summary 😂
At first it was a great way to keep me drawing regularly for my own projects and receiving feedback, though the content I want to make and the kind I ended up making for the platforms began to differ a bit. I think going forward, I'll be stepping back and focus more on honing career-relevant skills. I'll still post and share them though, it just won't be as much of a priority.
I love this video. I think you should never need to force your art or anything down peoples throats. If your art is loved by others they will come across it.
I think the root problem is the idea of being a "hybrid worker" or a "jack of all trades." People are to fixating on this concept makes it where most of the time, the actual craft doesnt matter anymore. A pastry chef no longer only need to make great pastries, but instead also need to know how to make "pretty package" , also need to know how to "decorate" their shop so that they can let people to come & take "pretty pictures," A book writer no longer just need to write compelling & interesting stories to attract more readers. Instead, they might also need to be a multilingual ventriloquist, or be an Oscar-level actor/actresses, etc. Same goes for artists/designers, the requirement of being better & better in crafts has become at the very bottom of the list. We might need to also be a great filmmaker, or be an expert psychologist, salesmen/marketer, or being able to accurately predict the next trends, algorithms, all these bs. It's good to have an extra skill & all, but as all the things go, more & more things are being expected & pressured on. Hell, including all the toxicities of social media & the "cancel culture" where someone can just rally up to cancel you for something they don't like. It's a complete hell hole This is not a "TikTok problem" or a "Social Media problem," it's a "Cultural & Knowledge" problem
i don't ever save art tricks or tips, I usually save information(like books or movies or shows to watch later) or content others have made that i would like to recreate for fun

Dear friends, the only thing that AI or any easy art programs can't contain is the amount of time, heart, and soul that go in completely self created art and productions. It won't compare...ever! Only people who are totally unaware of real art products will not care. They are not the ones to be afraid of. Be afraid of selling out cheap. I rather be an art work that took 80 hours than a piece that took 8 hours. Heart and soul. Always. ❤
Getting better at art is a never ending process. The quick Short/Tiktok tips on stuff can be useful but it will never be more useful than putting in the hours of work to get better.
There’s no such thing as an artist on social media. The only thing people on social media are interested in is attention. What ever they’re recording themselves doing is completely irrelevant. Camping for example: People who like camping *go camping.* Self-centered, socially-delayed children record an post “bushcraft” videos in an effort to impress the popular older boys. If a social media person stops getting “likes” for their “art,” they stop making “art,” and move on to the next thing, until they get the attention they want. Have you ever noticed, the only think you’re allowed to say about “art” on places like Reddit is “I love this!” There’s no such thing as an artist who doesn’t implicitly understand the importance of critique. On social media however, critique is a synonym for “bullying.”
I avoid tiktok like the plague. I honestly don't care if I never become popular or if my illustrations never sell. I keep my day job as a commercial artist while drawing and painting what I like as a hobby and share it with friends and those who find my job online and like it. My goal is self improvement and enjoyment not seek validation and instant gratification.
tutorial I save do help, mostly on youtube when time come in work when I need it for something specific etc, I don't even have tiktok, but some I saw around reuploaded on youtube, not really good and sometime misleading because of time, not enough information, lacking basic fundamental or just plain simple wrong like parrot repeating each other word and become bend copy after copy, like you do you, art is freedom, but for new artist, I really not recommending learning from shot video like tiktok.
Its ruining everything it touches. Theres not a single topic on it that doesnt lean torwards subverting peoples views torwards completely unhinged expectations and applications with no basis for any actual real life use that isnt either unhealthy or outright destructive.

Students should avoid it. It’s estimated 300 million jobs will be affected by it. It’s here we cannot stop the waves in the ocean so I will not waste any of my time fear mongering on it. I will just focus on efforts on myself . It’s a shame human creativity is being replaced by poor facsimiles. It devalues craft and skill, but I will keep on creating.

Art was always a pompous popularity contest. Artists always fought for attention... Successful artists tended to be entertainers, madman, outrageous, daring, semi-social, and of course, out there. Art is a competition for attention, and in the modern world, we all get to experience it live. TikTok ain't ruining anything, it's just fast food content for a fast food generation. All your points feel identical to points that were said during the 90's towards other types of platforms... This repeats itself often. At the end of the day, it's all just giving people something interesting to experience through various forms of art. The flash animation generation really proved how the only thing that matters, is just making something that brings intrigue in various forms. Salad fingers is a classic, becuase it was insane... Not due to some extremely special art skill, it was just morbid, unique, unexpected and creative, it was brought on a platform of free expression. There are no rules, just wave catching and momentum maintenance. As for learning art... Depends on which type of art the person wants to express with, and each has their own method of learning... The current generation certainly has attention issues. People that really want to learn high art, would end up finding the means to do it.

Hasn’t changed art in the slightest for me. I don’t look at tik tok. Thats what you should do. They don’t change anything if they don’t have an audience. So many people forget there is the option of not using technology if you don’t want to.

You say that TikTok is ruining art, but instagram has just the same effect - and so does youtube. If people think they can acquire a skill by watching 15 second clips about the topic then they will quickly find out that it isn't just that easy, but that's not just related to art. Hey Tyler, I have huge respect for you and for this video, but labeling one of the artist examples as inexperienced is plain wrong. The manga artist is Murata Yusuke and he is an excellent artist.
Honestly I disagree with you on a lot of these points. I think you’re holding a very old school view of the art industry, and to be clear, art has always been entertainment. That’s literally what it is. Just because the form of artwork we enjoy now is changing does not mean it’s a bad thing. It’s easier than ever to make a comfortable living as an independent artist today and I believe the day of the large studio is coming to an end, thanks to technology and these apps.
I disagree, that may be the case for a casual viewer or consumer but if you’re an artist trying to level up your skills, many of these highly edited Timelapses or tik tok short tips do not have enough content to actually show you how to do a specific technique that you would like to incorporate in your workflow. Quality over quantity has always been super important and folks like Tyler are the type that I would highly recommend if you want to see real meaningful progress in your artistic journey.

Because AI is the simply the expression of tiktok. The demoralization and ruining of art consumption and education is precisely about destroying you so that AI has it easier. Plus you have to think in terms of action and solutions, not just what the external world is doing to you. You can't control AI, but you can control your habits and efforts to a certain degree and put up a better fight.

I am someone who's also establishing my art career who's also in my 30s, I am also bothered by where our society is heading. I feel like people nowadays are not conscious of how many hours they're wasting just scrolling social media, adding absolutely nothing in their life, just unnecessary anxieties and negative emotion(I mean it can also inspire people, but it can also be a source of toxicity if too much). As someone who's goal is to be successful in art and who also started late, i will not waste my time further by being too addicted to social media.

So glad I'm a hobbyist. Balancing improving your art while thinking of outreach, social media, educational institution and later career position acceptance seems incredibly draining. Can just stay unseen, do my thing, keep on growing without distractions. Any art content consumed that are not in-depth lessons or worklows of artists is purely for the entertainment value

As someone who consistently looks for art content to learn from, I find TH-cam to be one of the better places, with a caveat. You are absolutely right that browsing TH-cam art creators should have a point, and it shouldn't be everything you do. What I find works is I find a lesson on a specific aspect of art that I want to know more about (lighting, color theory, etc) and then after the video ends (and sometimes with a rewatch) I go through my program and try to implement the theory in practice. I find the more I do this the more I internalize the lessons.

Having tons of saved short tutorials videos, that never been watched again or applied, hit so close to home. I've been lying to my self for the longest time, that watching these videos helps me improve, but thanks to you i started thinking about it and realised, that i'm not learning as much as i mindlessly scroll on Tiktok.
I used to learn so much years ago on youtube or skillshare from longer videos made by actual professional. They teach one subject so i had to focus on one thing for weeks, improve, then move for a next subject. Nowadays i'm not as productive. I haven't learned much and I'm failing at my art school, just because i'm have no time to draw and my destroyed attention span is keeping me from focusing on it. It's destroying my mental health, without drawing daily I feel like I'm losing purpose.
I'd like to add that art side of Tiktok is full of unnecessary drama, heavily edited videos and lately AI too. Sometimes it's a really toxic place for beginners.

I’ve bought Aaron Blaise classes as a high schooler and really took my animals art work above a beginner not entirely professional but you could look at it an instant say it was a good looking lion or wolf fast forward I now use Instagram and have stopped improving and I was angry like why am I not getting the same looking at this video it very clear I’m an artist that needs 40 minutes to an hour of a lesson to really absorb what I’m actually doing and should look for as an artist.

This is technically correct, the best kind of correct.
I think it would be more accurate to say that tiktok is ruining people's ability to learn or focus on art by turning everything into edutainment, it's difficult to take the lessons seriously, it's more like background noise, constant reassurance or voice in your head that stabilizes your identity as an artist by adding things to your mental list of trivial facts and surface level information.
FOMO adds to this effect as well as being out of the loop on the latest and greatest will make people insecure and the content pipeline feeds off of that feeling.
A lot of people who are not secure in their position or confident in their ability or that they understand art as much as they should, there's an infinite amount of information that is meant to provide a solution to an infinite amount of hyper specific problems, perpetual student mindset might be hurting hobbyists the most as a result.
Oh right, this reminds me of the hustle culture aspect that affects artists, you know the spiel, not earning from your work can take a toll on confidence and therefore the analysis paralysis persists.
It would be much better if people could come up with their own solutions to specific problems so they're simulatenously learning and applying the technique. But the challenge comes from ability to perceive something about the process as a problem to solve.
The programmer mindset always seeks problems to solve and optimize for efficiency and ease of use but in the end it feels like less work is actually being done and more time is spent on tinkering with the tools.
It's hard to work out what lifestyle choices should everyone follow, hammer the technique or be inventive, not like we invented a way for passive learners to get the RIGHT information they actually need to solve their problems which they don't even know they have. Strange, isn't it?
In my personal story, I am stuck in the beginner phase for my whole life up to this point because of my ADHD, I'm not just an artist who uses krita/CSP but also a game developer, music producer, 3D modeler, webdev, computer soft/hardware nerd and terminally online essayist as seen in this comment. This video wasn't really targeted towards me but it persisted at the top of my recommended for a short while before I finally induldged during my yet another day long video binging session, it is tangentially related to my problem in this case. I am painfully self-aware of habit and I haven't stumbled upon the right answer yet nor have I come up with my own solution yet, despite meditating on the subject occasionally. I wish best of luck to everyone else, including neurotypicals.

It's hard to accept at first, but people's taste is absolutely ruined (especially more young artist). It feels like people are trying to avoid learning art WHILE trying to learn art.
I have a more old fashioned approach towards art (even tho I don't work in a classical environment), and I prefer to distance myself from what is going on the internet, and it surprises me each time how younger artists have no idea how to rate art quality. Most of the works out there are beginner quality art. And since this is usually the only type of art people are exposed to, it becomes the only standard.
We have a small rule in classic art, "if it looks good, it doesn't mean it is good". A good view of an artwork is for the common viewers. If you're trying to be an artist, you need to question yourself more.
It is especially important with the presence of AI, because it simply clarifies and increases the gap between real artists, with hardcore knowledge baggage on their back, and modern intermediate artists.
This sounds harsh. I'm sorry if I made anyone mad or upset. But art is very disciplined and fluid. If you can't contain both, you simply lose your title as an "artist". And you become someone who simply draws well. But not, an artist.
I really hope people will become more aware of this topic

Just some constructive feedback. People might be more willing to see your point of view if you have some immediately actionable things to learn. Rating art quality is VAGUE and people are likely to be unsure what exactly you think they should be doing.

I predicted years ago this would happen, cause it already was in progress: the AI is going to surpass real artists and everyone else, not just because of it's own advancement, but because the states and supranational organizations are waging a mind war against humans on multiple levels, so AI is getting better, but WE are getting worse too!
It's not just about controlling the output/offer (that's old totalitarianism), it's about controlling the input/demand. People like or care about their fellow humans less and less, and therefore they won't have issues in creating or accepting machines to replace them.
Our art, culture, politics, philosophy, values, etc., are all decaying, and the artificial technocratic world of the future looks more enticing in contrast, or at least not so bad. And if people with heavy internet use continue to think that drawing cute anime chicks in social media or doing throwaway concept art work for mega-corporations to sell entertainment products is "real art" (as in ideal, or the best, or just as good as original fine arts), then the AI will have an easy job, and we'll also poison the taste and apreciation of future generations of humans.
The victimization from the art world needs to stop or we're gonna defeat ourselves with it. Painters, singers, actors, writers, etc., can't just complain about competition forever, whether it's human or artificial, money based or fame based. We need to get our sh-t together, and do our best, and keep ourselves accountable, like real people with real free will.

This year, I've learned and finally realized that every time I face a challenge, my mind tries distract me from solving it by endless scrolling on tiktok. By the time I noticed what happened, I had already lost the energy, focus and motivation. This habit of running away from reality consumes almost every positive aspect of life.
We should really reconsider the social media's place in our lives and always ask ourselves "What for?", before spending another hour on consuming junk food information.
Don't just reconsider social media, it can be anything from food, conversations, gaming, art research itself, streams, etc.
I recommend you read books by Steven Pressfield, he talks a lot about this resistance you discovered.
I cant get behind tiktok. I had it once and it was a waste of time. I'm making a webcomic and always doing studies...i just don't have time to chase down trending sounds and editing snappy art videos.
I'm documenting my progress here on youtube and have found it to be a better use of my time. But that's mostly it. My screen time has reduced significantly.
Fun fact: Since years I was saying the same thing about the TH-cam. Remember the Books? Those "tutorials" that took months, sometimes years to properly research and write. So only the true masters of the craft could afford to do it, often as their retirement job. Yeah, I miss them too 😂 Right now everyone can teach others on youtube and filtering out the good one's (like you) from bad ones' turns into a waste of precious time. This sadly happens in every craft, not only art. Properly researched and prepared coursebooks are being replaced by fragmentary tutorials made with feeding the algorithm in mind. I wonder how many artists actually started with Loomis like my generation of early internet used to.

Actually I never used TIKTOK, and 2 year back it was ban in India, anyway it good for us, I am reducing my time on social media, and trying to be productive in my work, as Software engineer and drawing as hobby, it quit amazing
I absolutely hate this era of short form video content and the endless scrolling. I want to see the art AS IS. not videos of trendy audio and the artist putting one stroke of paint on a painting that is basically finished already. I miss when sites were places to share your art not content to be consumed.
I do not take lessons if they do not contain the following elements:
1) basic geometry (straight lines and curves and their use in forming the silhouette); shaping body shapes through primitive geometric shapes.
a) anatomy
b) styling and design
2) Perspective
3) Lighting
4) Color and Color Hierarchy
I am feeling this so much just with instagram as well. I had 108k followers on instagram for my art but I just felt like having to be this consistent art machine posting the same content over and over was really stagnating my art growth. Now, I've started posting less and less but when I do post I feel it is more of substance and that my art is actually growing now from what I was just massproducing before. I took a massive hit to my engagement and am bleeding followers. I've lost 3k and expect to keep losing more and more. I just refuse to keep playing this game with social media that has only forced me to draw within this specific niche and never expand my skillset. It definitely sucks, especially because social media convinces you that followers mean everything, but I know this is better for my art in the long run.
I think what is scary is more and more the reliability of social media to the people hiring you and also (this one is scary) education. Many too many schools are starting to look up the following base of people applying and take that as a possible successful student. I want something else than social media to get me work but unfortunately its getting difficult unless youve got some networking and living in a place where art and culture have more presence.
I wrote a bit a number of years ago about "tutorial addiction" which I think is partially the problem with the short form video issue now. Not enough artists want to sit down for an in depth lesson thanks to what social media has done to us as a society. That said even some of the people going for the longer lessons never bother to actually do anything more than watch for the sake of entertainment.
I think what you are saying makes a lot of sense. I’m a Graphic Design student and can’t help but notice that the portfolio of the professionals I’ve met are not nearly as flashy as the work of my favorite social media influencers. This is definitely an important distinction to make as I traverse my creative journey. Do I want to be an influencer or do I want to work for a company. I can see the benefits of both.

I’m 25, and I recently (about 6 months ago at this point) got my first full time studio art job. I have never been on Tik Tok, and tbh I haven’t posted to social media (besides my own website) in 3+ years at this point. What I did instead, is I knuckled down, and focused on improving by studying the fundamentals and learning how to apply them. I’m so grateful I used my time to better my skills and portfolio rather than try and keep up with this new social media landscape. At this point, I’m not sure I’ll ever go back to posting my work online, unless we shift back away from the need to pump out constant entertainment rather than just art.

Even AI isn’t the largest issue. The whole mindset driving both points to the alienation of the public from the arts and art making in general. In some ways we’ve done this to ourselves as the artists of the past once insisted on the idea that art and creativity are some sort of mystical endeavor while also failing to teach basic art skills in a non-confusing way to younger generations, to the point there the average person who would otherwise say that everything takes hard work, is still convinced that art is only for the gifted. That didn’t come from them. That mentality came from artists who became esoteric about art. If we want better treatment, aside from fighting for our rights, we also have to put art back into the hands of the people, not just as a product but as an accessible skill no different than coding.
You can remove all those tutorials from your playlist except mine about character rotation.

If someone doesn't know they're taking bad advice and learning things the wrong way, then whether or not they learn from TikTok or TH-cam or an art institute isn't going to make any difference at all.
I work in kitchen design and some students I've seen come out of certified design schools make absolutely atrocious design concepts, and some people who have never opened a design textbook create stunning design concepts.
Saved posts or reels I have used some, mostly ones with pose references if pinterest ain't working, but not gonna lie yes for sure. A HUGE problem for me is having so much stimuli but having no clear direction of where to go, and also important the CONFIDENCE within myself to actually see and push myself in the direction of a job for someone else or for myself. A lot of it is consumption of ideas, observation is good, but not much in terms of production for myself and building my own self-esteem. It requires me to act upon those posts, but damn is it so unclear.

yes definitely! I don't learn from those type of videos. I need something that is more long form or it's useless. That is why I usually just break down and pay for courses, cause at the end of the day I need to make sure I am doing things that make me make progress. Otherwise what's the point. Great points.
I'm going to disagree partly and say that short form delivery is not inherently an antithesis to learning good art. To me it really depends on where you are in your art and what you're trying to learn. I've viewed quick tips multiple times where they point out a small anatomy mistakes, and I was instantly able to apply to my art for the better. Sometimes, long drawn out sessions where you dissect every little tid-bit can have the opposite effect of not being engaging enough.
Enveloping your world with art is the biggest boon to doing more art. Sometimes that quick hit is what I need to give me the inspiration to pick up the pen. It makes art approachable. I can't dedicate hours every time I want to learn something, and I don't think the expectation is that all practice should be that way to progress. I currently have like 10 tabs open with hours long videos that I haven't been able to sit down with for weeks because it feels daunting.
For someone that's been doing art for years and years, you already know a lot, so I think it's easy to forget that just getting started is fundamentally different. I think short form content can be the catalyst for learning more, easing people into the idea of diving deeper into learning what it takes to make the things they want to. I do agree, not all learning should be short form, and could create false impressions, but I don't really think many people do it that way. At least, not so many people that it would drastically change how the artworld as a whole functions. I don't think Tiktok trends will be ruining artists or art journeys, it's just simply another path that exists on the road to improvement.

If I may share my opinion, you are right about Art skills and the direction that is recommended for Art beginners to go, but I think you are missing the "point of view" moment. This moment is key. A "point of view moment" is that pivotal moment separating our personal goals, views, and opinions from one another. But this moment is key and it determines the direction of the respective individual.
For example, I think that example you give as bad example some kind Anime sketch form is not necessarily bad to be a goal for somebody.
I think it's more about what students want to do.
If they want them to use Art for sketches, basics comics drawings like, you know, thumbnails, storyboards, or quick design sketches, or children's doodles, that's their choice with such direction is good.
But it's almost pointless for me to say it since you more or less said it, so yeah...just my first comment on your channel.😁
My goal right now is learning how to draw the skull. Starting off with practicing drawing 3d shapes and perspective right now.
I love your tutorials and art talks. It contains so much useful information that I can use. I have a question how do you deal with stagnation in art, where it seems you are not improving in spite of all the exercises/ practices done.
If you are experiencing this you need good feedback. A fresh set of trained eyes can tell you exactly what you need to do more or less of. A good community or mentor would be the way work through this. Chances are you are making mistakes without knowing and they are turning into bad habits

I agreed with your points but i feel like Art has always been a popularity contest since the dawn of internet, the piece with the most view/share/engagement is always the one that had "content" in them (quick example would be fanart or short comic), Tiktok just happen to push that to the extreme. The problems i have is with these tutorials, there's always a "tips and tricks" to cover your weakness, Art aint no trick, you cant hide your weakness forever, i hate to sound old school but there's a lack of fundamental in art on social media , people end up stuck in there comfort zone and draw the same thing they are good at over and over and end up calling its their "style" instead of expand their skillset.

At first it was a great way to keep me drawing regularly for my own projects and receiving feedback, though the content I want to make and the kind I ended up making for the platforms began to differ a bit. I think going forward, I'll be stepping back and focus more on honing career-relevant skills. I'll still post and share them though, it just won't be as much of a priority.

I think the root problem is the idea of being a "hybrid worker" or a "jack of all trades." People are to fixating on this concept makes it where most of the time, the actual craft doesnt matter anymore. A pastry chef no longer only need to make great pastries, but instead also need to know how to make "pretty package" , also need to know how to "decorate" their shop so that they can let people to come & take "pretty pictures," A book writer no longer just need to write compelling & interesting stories to attract more readers. Instead, they might also need to be a multilingual ventriloquist, or be an Oscar-level actor/actresses, etc.
Same goes for artists/designers, the requirement of being better & better in crafts has become at the very bottom of the list. We might need to also be a great filmmaker, or be an expert psychologist, salesmen/marketer, or being able to accurately predict the next trends, algorithms, all these bs. It's good to have an extra skill & all, but as all the things go, more & more things are being expected & pressured on. Hell, including all the toxicities of social media & the "cancel culture" where someone can just rally up to cancel you for something they don't like. It's a complete hell hole
This is not a "TikTok problem" or a "Social Media problem," it's a "Cultural & Knowledge" problem
i don't ever save art tricks or tips, I usually save information(like books or movies or shows to watch later) or content others have made that i would like to recreate for fun
all art tricks from youtube shorts and tiktok are garbage, most tutorials are garbage. Kids spend 100 hours watching random tutorials for stuff out of context when they ould improve 100x just reading one solid book and doint studies from that

Dear friends, the only thing that AI or any easy art programs can't contain is the amount of time, heart, and soul that go in completely self created art and productions. It won't compare...ever! Only people who are totally unaware of real art products will not care. They are not the ones to be afraid of. Be afraid of selling out cheap. I rather be an art work that took 80 hours than a piece that took 8 hours. Heart and soul. Always. ❤
Getting better at art is a never ending process. The quick Short/Tiktok tips on stuff can be useful but it will never be more useful than putting in the hours of work to get better.
There’s no such thing as an artist on social media. The only thing people on social media are interested in is attention. What ever they’re recording themselves doing is completely irrelevant.
Camping for example: People who like camping *go camping.* Self-centered, socially-delayed children record an post “bushcraft” videos in an effort to impress the popular older boys.
If a social media person stops getting “likes” for their “art,” they stop making “art,” and move on to the next thing, until they get the attention they want.
Have you ever noticed, the only think you’re allowed to say about “art” on places like Reddit is “I love this!” There’s no such thing as an artist who doesn’t implicitly understand the importance of critique. On social media however, critique is a synonym for “bullying.”
I avoid tiktok like the plague. I honestly don't care if I never become popular or if my illustrations never sell. I keep my day job as a commercial artist while drawing and painting what I like as a hobby and share it with friends and those who find my job online and like it. My goal is self improvement and enjoyment not seek validation and instant gratification.
tutorial I save do help, mostly on youtube when time come in work when I need it for something specific etc, I don't even have tiktok, but some I saw around reuploaded on youtube, not really good and sometime misleading because of time, not enough information, lacking basic fundamental or just plain simple wrong like parrot repeating each other word and become bend copy after copy, like you do you, art is freedom, but for new artist, I really not recommending learning from shot video like tiktok.
Its ruining everything it touches. Theres not a single topic on it that doesnt lean torwards subverting peoples views torwards completely unhinged expectations and applications with no basis for any actual real life use that isnt either unhealthy or outright destructive.

Students should avoid it. It’s estimated 300 million jobs will be affected by it. It’s here we cannot stop the waves in the ocean so I will not waste any of my time fear mongering on it. I will just focus on efforts on myself .
It’s a shame human creativity is being replaced by poor facsimiles. It devalues craft and skill, but I will keep on creating.

Artists always fought for attention... Successful artists tended to be entertainers, madman, outrageous, daring, semi-social, and of course, out there.
Art is a competition for attention, and in the modern world, we all get to experience it live.
TikTok ain't ruining anything, it's just fast food content for a fast food generation.
All your points feel identical to points that were said during the 90's towards other types of platforms... This repeats itself often.
At the end of the day, it's all just giving people something interesting to experience through various forms of art.
The flash animation generation really proved how the only thing that matters, is just making something that brings intrigue in various forms.
Salad fingers is a classic, becuase it was insane... Not due to some extremely special art skill, it was just morbid, unique, unexpected and creative, it was brought on a platform of free expression.
There are no rules, just wave catching and momentum maintenance.
As for learning art...
Depends on which type of art the person wants to express with, and each has their own method of learning... The current generation certainly has attention issues.
People that really want to learn high art, would end up finding the means to do it.

Hasn’t changed art in the slightest for me. I don’t look at tik tok. Thats what you should do. They don’t change anything if they don’t have an audience. So many people forget there is the option of not using technology if you don’t want to.

Honestly I disagree with you on a lot of these points. I think you’re holding a very old school view of the art industry, and to be clear, art has always been entertainment. That’s literally what it is. Just because the form of artwork we enjoy now is changing does not mean it’s a bad thing. It’s easier than ever to make a comfortable living as an independent artist today and I believe the day of the large studio is coming to an end, thanks to technology and these apps.
I see and hear you and totally acknowledge I have an old school perspective.
I disagree, that may be the case for a casual viewer or consumer but if you’re an artist trying to level up your skills, many of these highly edited Timelapses or tik tok short tips do not have enough content to actually show you how to do a specific technique that you would like to incorporate in your workflow. Quality over quantity has always been super important and folks like Tyler are the type that I would highly recommend if you want to see real meaningful progress in your artistic journey.
How many thousands of layoffs in the just the last few months in the art industry? how many jobs are dissapearing forever because of AI? and you make a video on social media that looks like its 10 years too late.
those layoffs aren't directly related to AI nor is this video. This is about you and what you consume. are you making good habits or bad.

Because AI is the simply the expression of tiktok. The demoralization and ruining of art consumption and education is precisely about destroying you so that AI has it easier.
Plus you have to think in terms of action and solutions, not just what the external world is doing to you. You can't control AI, but you can control your habits and efforts to a certain degree and put up a better fight.
@@j.2512I’m not a concept artist but I just got a job as an illustrator and designer for a publishing company about a month ago. They didn’t care about how many followers I had. They cared about my skills in graphic design and illustration. There are still paths to working in a creative field but I don’t think you’re going to find them on a social platform.
