Counter point: some how they found a way to make a talking yellow electric rat look accurate to the source material and work for live action. So it’s not absurd to already notice this design of sonic ain’t the one chief.
Also it works for pokemon because it was already a world where these characters interact with humans. Sonic's only human character should just be dr robotnik, and even thats questionable if hes even human or not. Half egg prolly lol hell he even turns into a cyborg in Sonic SatAm.

My idea of what the Sonic movie should’ve been is completely CGI with the production of Sonic Unleashed, setting in Sonic’s own world with the cast of Sonic Heroes, script writing done in the style of the comics and Adventure games, the music composed by Jun Senoue/Crush 40 and Tomoya Ohtani, and the voice of Jason Griffith as Sonic. Just like the recent Transformers Bumblebee movie, a Sonic production that shows people outside the fandom why we love the series so much. I’m not feeling that with what we’re actually getting.

When a film looks like garbage, we have a right to call it out. We have all done this song and dance before. As many in the comments have already pointed out, Detective Pikachu is eargly awaited with its very well done and loyal designs yet despite everything Sonic is making the even most defensive fan question themselves.
Detective Pikachu looks more appealing to the eye even if CGI usually make cartoon characters look more creepy

I understand their point on the hate of the fans on this but doesn't change the point that its a horrible character design at least in detective pikachu the pokemons look and feel like their source material but this feels way to off compared to the boom designs this will put more hate for sonic more than he already does in the gaming industry

Unfortunately, animated movies (despite who good they are) have this stupid ass stigma that it's kid stuff and it's not taken that seriously towards the general audience. If it was animated (which I would of preferred as well) it wouldn't really do that well. Hardcore fans and kids would watch it, but the rest of the general public? . . .not really.
The thing about POKÉMON in general that their more complex in design compared to the simpler 20's/30's rubber hose design that Sonic has, this making them more easier to adapt to live action.

This has been said many times already and Sonic's somehow still here. This movie might suck and put a dent on the franchise, but it definitely won't kill it in it's tracks.
At least we're getting potentially way better stuff to look forward to for Sonic pretty soon.

I’m not even mad at the design, I’m mad about how this HAD to be a live-action film. The fact of the matter is there have been way more bad outings like this than good and Sonic as a series needs all the help it can get. Taking a risk like this isn’t good.
Though even then, the design is awful. I agree that it doesn’t necessarily mean that the movie will be bad but people can comment on the design of the main character. Like, you guys ragged on those 90s films but you skipped over things like Space Jam or Roger Rabbit where keeping the designs of the character true worked out.

They couldn't win with Sonic, made me wonder why they try. You give him regular legs and arms, he looks too human-freaky looking. You keep the noodle arms/legs, and he looks terrifying in reality. There wasn't a way to make this look great for a live action film.

There's a reason people aren't complaining about the pokemon or whinnie the pooh movie. There's a realistic element while still staying true to the source material's proportions. This design is straight up into uncanny valley territory.

The problem that always comes up with these nostalgia properties is "Who are they making the movie for" or "Who is the audience they are marketing to". If a Hollywood production is making a family movie with a cartoon character in it they are NOT marketing it to adults who grew up with the character. They want kids, young kids, kids who may have never seen it before. They want their character to be distinct for marketing, merch and toy purposes. Distinct from the previous versions of the character so that if it gets popular kids will want to be buying the NEW toys from the movie and not the tons of existing toys and merch. As long as the new designs test well with kids in their focus groups, they dont care what any adult thinks about it. They are not worried in the slightest if some lone adults who grew up with the characters don't buy tickets. As long as a family of 4 goes to see it.

Why would you loses your fans that have always been with you to appeal to some that may be interested? That's just ignoring money at that point. I mean the only reason sonic is still around is because the rabid fans won't let it die despite the most of the games being mediocre.

They aren't turning their back on old fans? Sonic looks different but this doesn't mean he was turned into an entirely new character, his personality (based on one of the leaked images) remains the same and the most iconic parts of his design are there.

While Sonic is a bizarre concept in general, that does not give the makers of this film a pass to make him this cringy.
The concept of Who Framed Roger Rabbit was a bizarre concept but it worked.
Imagine if the cartoon characters in that film had "realistic " redesigns?

@@maddestmax6522 I used to draw the sonic 1 box art when I was like 4 (which got me in special classes once I started school), but yeah, this on the Sega Genesis (Megadrive) was awesome. Never played the RoboCop game, but Battle Toads vs Double Dragons, Taz Escapes from Mars, Ecco, Toe Jam & Earl, Subterrania, and my favorite, Sonic 3 & Knuckles were all classics. Anyway, we'll see what they do with this movie. I personally think Sonic should be around the size, or a little larger of the live action Pikachu in detective Pikachu and I think he should be rendered in a similar way to Detective Pikachu. I really hope they don't make him the size of a normal human LOL

Reasons why the original Sonic design was cool: His skinniness conveys a sense of speed and a spring in his step, his sharp spikey hair suggested blue flames like a jet's rockets, his sharp brow gives you a sense that he is a rebel with 'tude which was popular in the early 90s yet still works, the colour of his arms gave him a human touch, his gloves suggest he's a showman and maybe even a brawler, and the design of his eyes harkens back to Felix the Cat and, of course, Mickey Mouse. The 'live action' character design looks like a puppet from a D-grade 80s kid's show.
What really worries me is that they casted Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnick. Who’s dumbass idea was it to put a someone like Jim Carrey in a Sonic movie?

People can deal with the change if the design was good. They took away the 2 iconic pieces of clothing he wears and redesigned his eyes and body to “make it work in live action”. Then detective pikachu pops on the scene..pretty much takes the exact weird ass pokemon designs gave them some fur and texture and it looks damn good and works in live action. So ofc fans are annoyed.

Here's the thing, had they of went with that other design the someone on Reddit made people still would have complained. They would have compared it Sonic 06 where he interacted with humans. Can't say I enjoyed the Alvin and the Chipmunks movies but they looked cute and correct in CG. In the original animated series they looked like flesh-coloured mutants with a t-shirt for a body, and the Chipettes were basically human girls with pink noses and round ears. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Sonic looks like some trash from DeviantArt at the moment but we'll know more when the trailer is out.
That Rocky & Bullwinkle movie wasn't that bad.

In the early 90s, SEGA wanted their own mascot to stand against Nintendo's Mario so they held a corporation-wide staff competition to anyone who could come up with best mascot design. Out of all of the entries, they picked the hedgehog design of sir Yuji Naka. The rest is history.
If the people behind this endeavour were smart, they should have done something like this as well to come up a 3d live action design for sonic that could appease the fans and mainstream audience who remotely recognise sonic from the latest Nintendo games.
I feel a lot of the negativity stems from the movie being live-action when an animated full CG film would have worked better considering the source material it's based on. Plus there are all of the negative stigmas often associated with live-action adaptations, especially with already established video game/animated properties.
And while this new design CAN work, Space Jam, and Roger Rabbit proved you can have characters with their original designs in live-action and still work. We just really need to see this trailer already so we can make our own impressions of it.
Speaking personally, the new design just strikes me as gross. The human-esque musculature just doesn't suit the torso. And if you're going to have unexaggerated human-like features ANYWHERE on a character, the remainder of the design should follow suit.
The mix of the two is just unnerving. It also looks highly disproportionate as compared to the original character's features. Like, he looks taller than he ever was in any sort of redesign. Which throws off the staple of this small, lightning fast hedgehog.
I'm not calling the film bad. I'm calling the design poor.

Coming from big online film critics like you guys, this one of the most civil, logical, neutral, and reasonable takes on this topic that I've seen so far. I applaud you good sirs. I basically feel the same way as well when I come to this upcoming Sonic movie.
Coming from a HUGE Sonic fan, I'm very torn on the design. It's not as bad as people were making out to be (especially when you look at it from afar). . .but it's not good either. It could of been A LOT worse, tbh.

This is something that I've been hearing from people and it just doesn't make any sense. When you just plop Sonic's original design in a live action setting, no matter how much realistic textures you put on it, it just doesn't look believable. It'll just look extremely fake. There's a Sonic fan film that's was made a half a decade ago that did just that, and it simply didn't work. The examples shown in this video (Rocky & Bullwinkle and Woody Woodpecker) indeed proves this further. Even through the design for this movie looks questionable, I makes sence for the context of this movie.

Even though I and most fans would have preferred this movie to be fully animated instead, animated movies have this stupid ass stigma; not being taken seriously as an art form because "it's for kids" bullshit. If the movie was animated, the interest of the general audience will be lost and not many people will see it except hardcore fans and . . .kids. It's the harsh reality of it and it fuckin' sucks.
Speaking of Detective Pikachu, people are arguing that DP does a better job at translating the POKÉMON into the live action setting than the Sonic Movie is. Here's the thing though: really, the POKÉMON in general are more complex in design compared to Sonic's simpler 1920's/ 30's rubber hose design, this making them easier to translate into the live action setting.

I was kinda pissed off on how people reacted to the teaser poster when it was officially published back in December. I get the backlash, but at the same time. . .it was just a damn silloette. People really jumped the gun on this and now they look somewhat stupid for doing so, thanks to a good half of them now realizing that it wasn't as bad as they though it was going to be just by seeing it in hole.
People should be more concerned for the script than anything. If it gives the brand justice by telling a fun and engaging story, then the design for Sonic is the very least of the movie's problems. I have my doubts for the movie. . .many. . .MANY doubts, but since the talent behind the movie show promise (like holy shit, Deadpool director Tim Miller is producing this thing) . . .I don't know. I want the trailer already, so I'll know if it going to be good or not. Hopefully the design for Sonic will look good in motion.

Speaking of Jim Carry, he's gonna be Dr. Robotnik for this movie. I honestly excited on how he's gonna pull this off.
How much do you want to bet we'll all eat our words two weeks from now when they reveal the design for Jim Carrey as the live-action Dr. Robotnik? That shit's probably going to be a horrifying looking fat suit, and we'll all end up appreciating the Sonic design by comparison. I can feel it.

And what’s sad is Sonic is a property that can actually benefit from animation similar to Into the Spiderverse.
My issue is that they made him look like a HUMAN when he is NOT a damn human character 🤭...
As a kid I loved Sonic, yet I never really liked his design. To see a semi-realistic take on him makes me happy! I think his film design looks cute, and I'm happy they're making him look like he belongs in the real world (like Detective Pikachu) because if you just put him in life action with any of his game renders it would look out of place and really break the immersion.

Honestly the face looks fine. It's those legs though Something about those legs don't look right. That concept art looks fine though. They should never gotten rid of his iconic gloves or shoes. Seeing Sonic without his gloves is like seeing Mickey without his gloves. You guys like Roger Rabbit and that has straight up cartoons interacting with humans yet you don't find that weird.

To be fair Korey, modern Sonic's problems are a case where the parents are to blame.
I really feel like that Rocky and Bullwinkle movie has gotten pretty underrated at this point. Not to mention rather misunderstood. I mean, after seeing Nostalgia Critic review that movie a few years back, it really opened my eyes in seeing how surprisingly clever the film is in places. It’s more of the sense of how people hated that live-action Josie and the Pussycats movie and grew to like it when they realize how well it satirizes the music industry and the way it commercializes it. Take it what you will, that’s just how I see them.
Live action Pokémon, live action Sonic it all looks bad to me. Nintendo had the the right idea with keeping it animated at least to me.
