This is something that's such an underrated but vital thing for pvp games that have magic or attacks with particles. VISUAL CLARITY. When every attack is full of tons of particles, colours and effects, nothing stands out. And since nothing stands out there is no reason to really be paying attention in a fight because if you do you just fry your brain. So when you win or lose you don't even feel anything since you couldn't even see what was happening. If only mantra's had a more minimalist design philosophy then not only would the game be a little more optimized, but easier to watch and play.
They should've just added more elements that matched the previous ones instead of trying to make new mantras for all of the old elements they tried to hard to make them look new and cool

Two of my good friends who already picked up deepwoken about 2 months ago already seem to know this missing feeling of cleaner combat. We even said if we made a combat driven game similar to deepwoken that something like mantras would be combo extenders. Its not only the old players who are really feeling this, its the new players too.
Danvr effect is real guys, trust Edit: Verse one was beautiful, I loved it. The balance was mid since the game was around a year old, especially the enchants which were rare so they were op as hell(obsfucation that made your wep invis and gave you a speed boost paired with speed demon(I hated that)) but when you were in a fight it was clean, simple, fun, and fulfilling upon winning. Now I’m being blinded by mantra spam and combos that make my hp disappear because I don’t spec into erudition because I want my m1s to do dmg Edit 2: they put a banger combat ost into an instanced sever. Should’ve been open world

Obfuscation makes your weapon near invisible(not as invisible of today) but it didn’t give you a speed boost until a later update in verse 1 cause it was op. Before, it made your attack speed faster

I have hated on the pvp rework since layer 2 dropped. Nobody would agree that the changes they made were bad back then because they were blinded by their shiny new toys. Now that they have 1000 other shiny tools they are bored, and realize I was right all along
i only played verse 1 for like 4-5 months before verse 2 dropped with some friends while learning the game at the same time, and holy SHIT looking back at some old clips now, it was so much more fun, the atmosphere was so much more unique, the combat felt clean, everything was so interesting and enjoyable to explore and learn ESPECIALLY with friends (this is gone mainly because ive played the game for 2 ish years now, we know literally everything). i would much rather have a "mage" build in verse 1 where i have to spec HEAVILY into ether/reservoir to keep using mantras rather than "oh look at me i shrined down 90 intel and got 6 erudition i have inf ether 🤡". (every build has elemental rebound since an update near verse 2 release so you get more tempo from landing mantras AKA USING TEMPO LOL) the only bad things about verse 1 imo was the build making (notice i didnt say progression, progging was fun with friends excluding luck.) and the lack of any form of tutorial, not even tutorial just a screen that says "heres how to get food, heres how to level up, good luck!" is literally all it needed. i remember buying deepwoken AGES ago in verse 1 and was never able to learn it cause i kept starving trying to find food and rage quitting. tl:dr: deepwoken is ruined, verse 1 was better

@red-lu5go verse 2 is a whole different game compared to verse 1. top chime players can actually land hits and they run more diverse builds with high willpower, high agility, high charisma, etc. the game is NOT mantra spam, and never has been. saying "mage builds ruin the game" and then you go back to verse 1 and everyone had the EXACT SAME BUILD nearly 1:1. mantras being viable is NOT a bad thing and some people should not have to be close to the opponent to deal damage to them, it's going to kill the game AGAIN if we went back to the attunementless nlk dark ages like we had back in verse 1. remember when the best builds had 600 hp? and 60% damage res? and insane healing? AND there was no parry cooldown? yeah i'm sure sitting there and infinitely parry trading was so much fun

I didn't even think of this. In verse 1 I sucked at fighting fist users until one of my friends who was good enough to beat some lancelot players helped me train and find the flaws in the way I fought. After a few days of training I was able to confidently fight fists and that fighting knowledge helped me get better at fighting everything else. In verse 2 there's no reason to train anymore because no matter what you do, there'll always be a broken mantra, oath or weapon that skill can't help you against. The old method to get better was to practice, find flaws in your fighting style and improve upon them. The new method is to make a new build with all the strongest mantras and spam anything you have until you win. Right now, even with all the flashy effects and explosive mantras, winning fights feels empty because after a fight you gain nothing. No new fighting knowledge, no inspiration to make you wanna practice and get better, and no flaws to look back on because chances are, you couldn't even see wtf was going on.

Luckily there are tools available to reduce visual bloat on your screen at the cost of the game's visual quality. Moreover, the fact that these "people" can increase the size of the visual effects and hitboxes at the cost of "more ether cost" is insane to me. They may freely hit you over the head with a god damn meteor and you can't do anything about it. Mage builds need to disappear entirely. Mantras should be a combo extender or a flashy move instead of a throwing shit at a wall simulator. I genuinely can't think of a singular pvp interaction i've had in the past 4 weeks that wasn't a player just holding S on their keyboard and spamming ranged mantras. Aside from visual clutter and bloat, the literal lobotomy these people get from playing like this is just genuinely saddening because the meta is just "stand 100 ft away and throw rocks" instead of actually engaging with the base mechanics of the game(Parry trading and M1s). I really loved the Silentheart rework mainly since it just gave say 2-3 new moves that look flashy, but it's still only m1s at its core. All the other oaths are pretty wild, aside from maybe Oathless, Archwarder, Contractor and Jetstriker. I wish they could strip the game down to a base level and just bring back Verse 1 and just make a separate game on roblox. Calamity Mod for terraria did this in a way by introducing Calamity Mod Classic which brings the entire experience back down to a barebones level of their intended vision essentially reverting everything to a very early stage of the mod. If they did this i'm sure a very sizable amount of people would be happy.
I have also played league of legends before and i will say this, the Mana system is COMPLETELY irrelevant once you hit mid-game. You regenerate it so fast and you have so much of it that it doesn't have an impact anymore. There is barely any kind of resource management with the champions which use mana after your first base. I mostly played resource-less champs because i find them to be less braindead than the average mage champion who just throws abilities at you dealing about 400 damage each with a 2 second CD.

funniest memory of V1 is when ash slam was first found. some guy had it with a bloodless on it and spammed tf out of it. it did like 100 dmg and bloodless was broken asf back then he 1 v 11'd us with 1 mantra and we all thought he was exploiting LOL

I feel like what should be taken away from this is that a change to the functionality/use of mantras and/or ether is needed To me, things like hero blades make sense as long as they get handled correctly, which means that when picking mantras as the focus of your build, m1s still serve as a critical, but not as important part of the build when it comes to effective combat and dealing meaningful damage. The main thing here is that it should still require actual effort to get a payoff on using those mantras. It shouldn't be something that can be thrown out for free with no consequence. Those builds shouldn't become better than the alternative, which is focusing on the m1 oriented side, or attunmentless as many would say. With the addition of some legendary weapon, such as pyre keeper or boltcrusher, those same builds are given an advantage in the form of strength in all areas of combat. They are able to play in any sort of eay and still perform just as well or even better than others in the game. I feel like the theme I saw a while back and even now, albeit less prevalent, is that mantra oriented builds served as glass cannons, with high damage payoff coming from utilizing mantras, but less effective when it came to being up close and personal, and then m1 oriented builds that would use mantras as support for their combat. Those builds would be more resistant to mantra oriented builds, in a way countering them and keeping fair when they came across one another. I feel like that theme is almost non existent now, and mantra based builds have really taken over the game.

Verse 1 had really broken and annoying stuff but it would get nerfed really fast. The thing that stayed broken for the longest was prob atunementless but it was still fightable just the highest stats in the game. Verse 2 the parrying got worse the ping got worse the game lost character and they still havent patched the new movestacking thats been in the game for so long

And that's not even mentioning the fact that they have a permanent bug in their game where they can't find whats causing a data leak that's leading to players progressively getting more laggy. (As they AO Devs said themselves, its just bugs they can't find & roblox that cause the highest amount of lag.)

Arcane sure as hell doesn’t have 1k ping, it’s about balancing, how does arcane have multiple boss fights going on, travelling NPC boats, NPCs fighting each other on land and on sea, and with entire island raids all at the same time, but deepwoken still can’t fix patrolling npcs walking in place, still can’t do multiple bosses in the same map without lag, still can’t fix timings and ping just being so off that they added a setting to increase the time you get to parry Deepwoken develops gotta stop tryna take shortcuts and just optimize the game

I still remember when no one knew what enchants did or how to get bells. I found like 5 drowned enchants in a day at hive (which I didn't even know existed for the first like month) and everyone I asked thought it made it so you didn't drown or something. When you saw someone kitted out in enchants and had a bell that was terrifying and it was amazing. Now the game just feels horrible to actually play especially with things like mage builds running around even though everyone knows they are completely broken.

Obfuscation makes your weapon near invisible(not as invisible of today) but it didn’t give you a speed boost until a later update in verse 1 cause it was op. Before, it made your attack speed faster

I have hated on the pvp rework since layer 2 dropped. Nobody would agree that the changes they made were bad back then because they were blinded by their shiny new toys. Now that they have 1000 other shiny tools they are bored, and realize I was right all along

i only played verse 1 for like 4-5 months before verse 2 dropped with some friends while learning the game at the same time, and holy SHIT looking back at some old clips now, it was so much more fun, the atmosphere was so much more unique, the combat felt clean, everything was so interesting and enjoyable to explore and learn ESPECIALLY with friends (this is gone mainly because ive played the game for 2 ish years now, we know literally everything).
i would much rather have a "mage" build in verse 1 where i have to spec HEAVILY into ether/reservoir to keep using mantras rather than "oh look at me i shrined down 90 intel and got 6 erudition i have inf ether 🤡". (every build has elemental rebound since an update near verse 2 release so you get more tempo from landing mantras AKA USING TEMPO LOL)
the only bad things about verse 1 imo was the build making (notice i didnt say progression, progging was fun with friends excluding luck.) and the lack of any form of tutorial, not even tutorial just a screen that says "heres how to get food, heres how to level up, good luck!" is literally all it needed. i remember buying deepwoken AGES ago in verse 1 and was never able to learn it cause i kept starving trying to find food and rage quitting.

@red-lu5go verse 2 is a whole different game compared to verse 1. top chime players can actually land hits and they run more diverse builds with high willpower, high agility, high charisma, etc. the game is NOT mantra spam, and never has been. saying "mage builds ruin the game" and then you go back to verse 1 and everyone had the EXACT SAME BUILD nearly 1:1. mantras being viable is NOT a bad thing and some people should not have to be close to the opponent to deal damage to them, it's going to kill the game AGAIN if we went back to the attunementless nlk dark ages like we had back in verse 1. remember when the best builds had 600 hp? and 60% damage res? and insane healing? AND there was no parry cooldown? yeah i'm sure sitting there and infinitely parry trading was so much fun

I remember verse 1 I made a build with true ether bullets and eruption path with elastic enchant, this was when true ether bullets and elastic procced on every m1, shut was braindead but got nerfed in like 2 days
i remember playing deepwoken on day of release and getting a multiplicity enchant back when it spawned clones for like a minute straight and m1 whoever hit you and i remember me and like 5 friends were messing with it like cavemen with fire. that shit was so beautiful and i lowkey didnt mind being a open tester but once people began understanding what they were doing in mid 2022 and slowed down on updates i dipped until verse 2. that shit was miserable and as a low-skill player like myself were effected IMMENSELY however verse two at the start was MAGESTICAL. it had the same feeling as release with all of my friends but we actually understood it, but now we're this deep in in 2024 its plunged back to summer 2022 but WORSE
idk verse 2 was fine it was amazing when it dropped yeah the combat was different but it was still the same game same vibe just it got oversaturated over time with the weekly updates making it into this mess plus two years of no major content update really takes it's toll

I didn't even think of this. In verse 1 I sucked at fighting fist users until one of my friends who was good enough to beat some lancelot players helped me train and find the flaws in the way I fought. After a few days of training I was able to confidently fight fists and that fighting knowledge helped me get better at fighting everything else.
In verse 2 there's no reason to train anymore because no matter what you do, there'll always be a broken mantra, oath or weapon that skill can't help you against. The old method to get better was to practice, find flaws in your fighting style and improve upon them. The new method is to make a new build with all the strongest mantras and spam anything you have until you win.
Right now, even with all the flashy effects and explosive mantras, winning fights feels empty because after a fight you gain nothing. No new fighting knowledge, no inspiration to make you wanna practice and get better, and no flaws to look back on because chances are, you couldn't even see wtf was going on.

Luckily there are tools available to reduce visual bloat on your screen at the cost of the game's visual quality. Moreover, the fact that these "people" can increase the size of the visual effects and hitboxes at the cost of "more ether cost" is insane to me. They may freely hit you over the head with a god damn meteor and you can't do anything about it. Mage builds need to disappear entirely. Mantras should be a combo extender or a flashy move instead of a throwing shit at a wall simulator. I genuinely can't think of a singular pvp interaction i've had in the past 4 weeks that wasn't a player just holding S on their keyboard and spamming ranged mantras. Aside from visual clutter and bloat, the literal lobotomy these people get from playing like this is just genuinely saddening because the meta is just "stand 100 ft away and throw rocks" instead of actually engaging with the base mechanics of the game(Parry trading and M1s). I really loved the Silentheart rework mainly since it just gave say 2-3 new moves that look flashy, but it's still only m1s at its core. All the other oaths are pretty wild, aside from maybe Oathless, Archwarder, Contractor and Jetstriker.
I wish they could strip the game down to a base level and just bring back Verse 1 and just make a separate game on roblox. Calamity Mod for terraria did this in a way by introducing Calamity Mod Classic which brings the entire experience back down to a barebones level of their intended vision essentially reverting everything to a very early stage of the mod. If they did this i'm sure a very sizable amount of people would be happy.
I have also played league of legends before and i will say this, the Mana system is COMPLETELY irrelevant once you hit mid-game. You regenerate it so fast and you have so much of it that it doesn't have an impact anymore. There is barely any kind of resource management with the champions which use mana after your first base. I mostly played resource-less champs because i find them to be less braindead than the average mage champion who just throws abilities at you dealing about 400 damage each with a 2 second CD.

Silentheart is actually good now... way too good, basically attunementless but without any ether costs/mantra downsides meaning you can js spam stuff and have mantra res and free rtda, ardour scream and all, free jet kick too...

1. No more no attument mage builds(and mage overall)
2. No more 100 vent mfs
3. No more 560 hp builds

I feel like what should be taken away from this is that a change to the functionality/use of mantras and/or ether is needed
To me, things like hero blades make sense as long as they get handled correctly, which means that when picking mantras as the focus of your build, m1s still serve as a critical, but not as important part of the build when it comes to effective combat and dealing meaningful damage. The main thing here is that it should still require actual effort to get a payoff on using those mantras. It shouldn't be something that can be thrown out for free with no consequence. Those builds shouldn't become better than the alternative, which is focusing on the m1 oriented side, or attunmentless as many would say.
With the addition of some legendary weapon, such as pyre keeper or boltcrusher, those same builds are given an advantage in the form of strength in all areas of combat. They are able to play in any sort of eay and still perform just as well or even better than others in the game.
I feel like the theme I saw a while back and even now, albeit less prevalent, is that mantra oriented builds served as glass cannons, with high damage payoff coming from utilizing mantras, but less effective when it came to being up close and personal, and then m1 oriented builds that would use mantras as support for their combat. Those builds would be more resistant to mantra oriented builds, in a way countering them and keeping fair when they came across one another. I feel like that theme is almost non existent now, and mantra based builds have really taken over the game.

Verse 1 had really broken and annoying stuff but it would get nerfed really fast. The thing that stayed broken for the longest was prob atunementless but it was still fightable just the highest stats in the game. Verse 2 the parrying got worse the ping got worse the game lost character and they still havent patched the new movestacking thats been in the game for so long

What if every time developers made a huge change to their game (huge combat revamps, stuff like layer 2 etc) they published the old version of the game so people can play it? Arcane sure as hell doesn’t have 1k ping, it’s about balancing, how does arcane have multiple boss fights going on, travelling NPC boats, NPCs fighting each other on land and on sea, and with entire island raids all at the same time, but deepwoken still can’t fix patrolling npcs walking in place, still can’t do multiple bosses in the same map without lag, still can’t fix timings and ping just being so off that they added a setting to increase the time you get to parry

Edit: This is coming from a verse 1 player since launch. We were 100% just open testers and the game was absolutely amazing when no one knew anything. I still remember when no one knew what enchants did or how to get bells. I found like 5 drowned enchants in a day at hive (which I didn't even know existed for the first like month) and everyone I asked thought it made it so you didn't drown or something. When you saw someone kitted out in enchants and had a bell that was terrifying and it was amazing. Now the game just feels horrible to actually play especially with things like mage builds running around even though everyone knows they are completely broken.
