    As a kid, we used to bend the wheels down intentionally because if you could get a car to ride on just the outside edge of the wheels, It would eliminate some of the friction, and they were considerably faster on a piece of flex track.

    My father taught me cars, from back in the day when you could start swapping a motor out in the morning and drive it later that evening. I always enjoyed the paint/body work more than engines, but these days have no method or means to work on full size vehicles. I do believe you've given me the inspiration to do paint and body work on scale cars. How perfect is it, a few hours here, a few hours there, blood sweat and tears, all in the palm of your hand.
    Appreciate the work you put into these videos, not only fun to watch but inspirational as well.

    This was the first HW's model I owned..
    Here in the UK They seemed rare and exotic...
    I used to spin the wheels and time how long they ran for with a stopwatch..

    Just a note of FYI
    I am a collector from way back, I bought this model new when it came out as did lot of my friends. I still have it and it's near perfect still. You did a fantastic job! Nice work. But I think I can shead so light on a question you had. You asked about the wheels being bent down on some cars. At the time there was some magazines "cartoons" and "hotrod cartoons" they were like mad magazine but about cars. When they would draw a car in motion to show it's power it would be raised in the front and the wheels bent in together we as boys tried to emulate that so we bent them down. Keep up the good work and thank you. Rick

  • @ThomasCollectables
    @ThomasCollectables 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    The restoration adds more value than I expected. I can see why though because it gives collectors the opportunity to own an original 1968 car that they might not be able to own otherwise, especially not in amazing condition!

    Wheels curling down is a real conundrum. Many of my early cars had that, and I never pulled them down as a kid. I still have all my original 16's, unrestored, as played with. Wish i still had them in the packages. I was 8 when Hot Wheels were released. Ironically, my very first one is in the best shape, a gold Mustang. Great video, Thanks.

    Man, there's just something about the Stingray isn't there? The curves and lines that are almost like an updated art deco aesthetic, it's slightly organic form makes it kind of look like a living creature more than a machine, powerful but also compact and nimble, it's a beautiful little car, and it's a real joy to see a master like you at his work. And you just gotta love that rich, glossy gorgeous paint job, really great work as always.

    So, my theory on the axles being bent down is the opposite. They're always bend upward by kids pressing down while playing; as you noted. But then, when off their wheels that bend upward free-rotates downward as the weight of the wheel, on that now-bent axle, pulls them down. Hopefully that'll keep you from being up at night...at least that's how I sleep better. ;-) Great work and my sons and I love watching!!

  • @ChristopherCobra

    The roughness of the zinc plating comes from the growth of zinc dendrites. Any microscopic imperfection will cause the current to focus there. The zinc will begin to build up to shorten the anode/cathode path at that point - pulling current away from the target area around it. You might notice the effect accelerates over time. Given time, these will grow into "trees" reaching out to the cathode. Eventually, they will cause a short. In industrial cells, they sometimes reverse polarity for a bit to get rid of them - they get deplated way faster than the areas surrounding them on the target (the "good" plating"). Not sure that would work for you or not. Good video.

    We used to race these down the run-off drains at school... it used to be pretty competitive, with some races being for the actual cars... I had a pretty good collection by the time I left school, but as happens, the collection remained in a small bin when I left home and my dear old dad (RIP) eventually threw the bin out after numerous requests for me to come and pick them up... oh how my heart is filled with regret in my later years haha... I would have cheerfully invested in renovation equipment and recorded my own makeover efforts for TH-cam... I could really use a hot tub time machine right now haha...

    When I got my first Hot Wheels car (the Corvette you just did) the axles were flat. I was told that the wheels would angle down over time and that, that was normal. I think it had something to do with contact with the track (or less contact with the track) and going faster. That is what I remember from 50 years ago.

    Positively gorgeous! Interesting factoid on this reaching the hands of kids everywhere before the real ones getting to the Chevy showrooms! I was a “space brat” (children of aerospace contractor employees at the Cape, Houston, White Sands, Edwards, etc). I remember many of the early astronauts drove Vettes....from Rathmann, I seem to recall.....and while stationed at the Cape and Patrick’s AFB, we would spot them driving the bright red and blue ones across the causeways at illegal speeds! That was 1967, 68 and 69.
