This is brilliant. I started knitting socks during winter lockdown here in Holland and so far managed to master the round heel or French heel as fitting best for my not-so-average foot. Also I adjusted the gusset to help the fit around my foot. But there is much more to learn and I will for sure study your video's further. Thank you for all your work!
Who knew?? I had no idea a foot could be measured in all these ways! Going back now to watch the video I started with: Tips to customize socks. I'm excited to learn.👍🏽 Tks for sharing all this great info☀️
Love this! Eagerly awaiting More. I have "average" foot ratios but my sis needs odd adjustments and I want to knit her a comfortable sock that custom fits Her. I am currently knitting socks for her and have finished one but I fear the increases have made for a baggier heel than will be right. Problem is she lives 4 hours from me and I don't see her that often.
I have knit many socks for people with challenging fit issues, whether it's the crazy high arches that run in my family, or mismatched ankle and ball of foot measurements. I bet that the upcoming tips will help to make a sock that fits your SIL well!
Roxanne, I printed and purchased your sock workshop you did a few years back. I have measured my foot in various places but am having some trouble putting all the figures down on paper and staying focused. I have ADHD (Attention deficient hyper disorder) and am overwhelmed even looking through a yarn store sometimes (overwhelmed)!! Could you do a step by step series for us ADHD folks from yarn size, stitch count, conversion to formula for number of stitches for your foot. I have a large size heel diagonal 13 inches but a slim foot!! I think if I get the hold of the formula process and inputting numbers correctly my brain will eventually follow suit. Thank you Roxanne for all you do. I am wondering if we could do a knit along kind of like a sing a long. (Yep, simple) TY
So I hav almost finished a sock based on hubby’s measurements n they look grt.. I was wondering about measurements for spiral tube socks for my 3.5 yr old as she grows out of her shoes n socks very fast...the problem with tube socks is that they slip down n bunch at the ankle....will knitting them high almost till the knee pit help? With a stretchy 3x3 pattern with one st off every 4-5 rounds... If yes, shud I take the measurement just where the cuff wud start or the foot circumference? Her ball of foot is 6” n top of calf measures 7.5”, so quite a difference, can’t have the same measurement for the whole tube...plz suggest how to go about this... and if I make it tight so that it doesn’t slip n it won’t fit next year n the whole purpose of long lasting socks is defeated... Kindly suggest if this is good idea or shud I just knit with heels :) Thnx
Roxanne, THANK YOU so much for your detailed instructions. I'm a new knitter (self-taught via TH-cam) and want to knit socks. will you be doing a complete beginning to end sock tutorial knit along? I've tried others, but they are either unclear in their instructions or work too quickly...leaving me with many unfinished starts and lots of frustration. I hope you'll say YES!!
I have just found your tips and tricks WOW !!! first two I watched answered so many of my questions thank you 😊 I have just put the ones I can find at the moment on my watch later list I shall be watching all of these with great interest again Thank You 😊
I"m so glad you liked them. Many of the videos are on playlists, so that might help you to find them, as well. You can also create your own playlist of videos that you find, which can help if you want to return to the videos again and again. :-)
I have knitted 2 pairs of socks, via the Magic Loop. (the 3-4 needles drive me crazy). How do I eliminate the "Ladders" when going from one needle to the other.
How do I knit a swatch??? From the beginning... How many stitches do I cast on? How many stitches do I knit or how many inches across How many rows down? What kind of edge do I need on this swatch? HOW do I do this! ! ! ! ! Im so lost!!! Im using 9" circular needle number 2 US and I need a gauge of 30 sts per 4 " These are socks so they have to fit right!!! Do I knit 5 Inches in a needle that is my guess of what I need for the size I am trying to knit?? I know I need to measure it and count the stitches. Im so confused. Never knitted a swatch before please help!!
If I make use of this pattern in measuring my feet, so how do I know the total about of stitches to cast on, the total rounds for the heel flap/heel, total rounds for length of feet and the foot. ( I make use of the magic loop).

Thank you for your videos on sock knitting. I’m going to try to make socks for my brother in law. My sister says she can’t find socks big enough to fit him. Hopefully I can customize a pair that will fit him. I think it’s going to be a challenge.
I knit my brother socks, sometimes, and it wasn't until my last visit home that I realized how tight regular socks are on his legs. They make lasting imprints! My brother is a big guy -- 6'3'', 10'' ankles, and the circumference around the ball of his foot is more than 11''. The secret to knitting him socks has turned out to be using 6-ply sock yarn, rather than 4-ply. That way, I can knit socks that are almost exactly the same number of total stitches as socks I knit for myself. I don't feel like I'm knitting forever. Good luck! You can shoot me questions over on Ravelry if you aren't sure at some point about what to do. :-)
Excellent! I'm into knitting socks at this summer (cuz it's not SO bloody hot doing so 😊 ), so your video is really apropos - for me! I'm testing all the methods to work a short row heel at the moment - but the jury is STILL out on that score. 🤔 I feel myself drifting toward a plain heel flap and gusset construction. 😲
I have finally learned to knit a SR sock heel that fits my ridiculously high arch, but I have found that it takes more thinking and calculating to make adjustments that fit *well* for a SR heel. It's far easier and pretty straightforward to adjust the heel flap and gusset for a good fit. I've always thought the summer was ideal for sock knitting. I used to knit one sock for each of the new balls of yarn I had purchased, because I was so entranced with how the self-striping patterns presented. I didn't need new socks, so I didn't care about making the second sock. When fall came around, and the weather turned colder, I had to knit only one sock to get a new pair! :-)
What an extra-smart way to approach sock knitting! LOL OR I should bite the bullet and learn to knit socks 2aat. My next heel flap and gusset pair, will be one were the first and last 2 flap stitches are knit/purled, and the knots are picked up. I'm thinking that it might be easier to identify WHERE to pick up the gusset stitches. The slipped stitches always do an extra roll for me - just for hellery and to complicate things for me - so the "knots'" might be the answer. 🤔

I love how you explained the measurements, very user friendly, thank you.
Thanks for this video, Rox. I am knitting socks for a distant aunt and this made it easy for her to know exactly what I needed.
Without a doubt, the best and most thorough measurement system I have seen for sock knitting 🧶 Thank you Roxanne ❤

Hello Rox
Well I was wondering if you have a pattern that you use. Also these tips are good but it would be nice to see these tip actually being used.
I need a a lot of hand holding.

Thanks so much!!!
I need one of those tshirts!

I love your t-shirts, where can we get them???
If I make use of this pattern in measuring my feet, so how do I know the total about of stitches to cast on, the total rounds for the heel flap/heel, total rounds for length of feet and the foot. ( I make use of the magic loop).

Do you have a full pattern for socks?
Is the measurement floor to where sock ends including the cuff width or just to where cuff would start?
The idea is to find the measurement of the total length you want for your sock -- so where you want the CO edge to hit, down to the floor.
Thanks
Rox - Always my go to for help. So clear and informative. Thank you for the time you take to help others.
You are so welcome, Alison! And thanks for the SuperThanks! :-)

Roxanne Richardson thanks that’s a good tip about the yarn. I’ll be going up to visit during the holidays so I’ll get his measurements then.
well, love your shirt off course!!
Does this measuring technique also work for toe up?
THANKS, Roxanne. Much appreciated. I hope that you will talk about EASE, PLEASE. :))
How do you find out the curve of the heel to the foot?
Do you mean the arch? What is it that you want to learn about it?
Ya
SHOCKER IN THE ARM

Advantages and disadvantages to each method! (That's knitting for you.)
I have a husband his foot is 11.5 inches long how I cast on for this?
your shirt makes me laugh! danger, danger.
