Doing the trail around the end of Feb/start of March, most of it solo. Good stuff and good to see all this stuff. Makes me worry less to know what I'm in for!
It’s a great trail! Despite the injuries and coming off trail early, I had a blast! I’ll be publishing another video soon about what worked, what didn’t, gear, trail conditions and future gear updates. Best of luck on your upcoming thru-hike!
Only had about 3lbs leftover. We budgeted enough rations for 9 days on the trail. I packed about 1.6lbs/day. You could get someone to supply drop for you but we wanted to do an unsupported trip as much as possible. Also, there were few times when I had to do a full water carry(3L). Most times, I just cameled-up(1.5L) at a water source and carried 1.5-2.0L.
Really enjoyed your video. Thank you for posting and letting us know on Facebook. Really awesome you and your dad had a wonderful time together. I love your dad hiking staff. Sorry you had to call it. Can't wait for part 2 to finish. Good call Ride That Tasty Wave
Thanks for watching the video! He’s been using that hiking staff for about 15 years now. It’s a great trail and I’m already itching to get back out there! I’ll be posting another video soon about gear, trail conditions, and overall experience. Glad you enjoyed the video!
@@ChristopherGalletto love mine too. I’ll get the new 1p after I wear this one out. Lots of improvements it looked like. Going to thru hike this trail starting next week. Great to have a recent video. Thanks again.
Sorry you guys had to get off - thanks for sharing vid hope you return as it feels great to reach a finish line. I as retiree did the trail with a friend and had a blast for 10 days. I have plans to return and do it again to train for the JMT. Gear shakedown, food taste tests, physical and mental preparedness. Likely March Hugs 🤗
It was a really tough call but ultimately was the best decision. I love the outdoors! It’s not worth jeopardizing future excursions for a current one. The trail will still be there a couple months down the road. Heal now, hike again soon! Glad your experience was awesome!
After the LSHT, I returned to my tried and true sock system I’d used for years….with little to zero blisters….thin, polypropylene liners under wool socks. The outer socks are still SmartWool, like in my hiking boot days, just an ankle sock versus a higher boot cut. Thanks for watching! Cheers!
Fun hike! I just finished thru hiking west to east last week. Winter’s Bayou and Tarkington are extremely wet/muddy. I am thinking of going east to west next time but using wader boots for those sections. Great trail overall! A real hidden gem for Texas hiking.
Congratulations on your thru hike! I keep hearing that about the East end. I’ll keep that in mind when I finish out the last bit of trail. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for watching! Definitely a fun trail and worth a go! My pack was right at 39lbs at the beginning. That included all my food for the trip and 3L of water. I dialed my amount of carried water to 1.5-2L after day 2. Hope you get out there soon!
That’s an understatement. It was heavy, lol. Base: 17.5 lbs Worn: 5.1 lbs Consumables: 18.8 lbs Total: 41.4 lbs That being said, there are many pieces of gear in my kit that I’ve swapped out for something lighter. I also wanted to do as much of an unsupported trip as possible. So, we planned and carried enough supplies for 9 nights on trail. Would I plan another unsupported, 8-9 day thru-hike? ABSOLUTELY! Would I change up my kit, for something lighter? HECK YEAH! If I were to go, today, with the kit I have. It’d look something like this…. Base: ~17.0 lbs Worn: ~4.25 lbs Consumables: ~14.65 lbs Total: ~35.9 lbs -Base- I swapped out heavier for lighter gear but also added recording gear that made it a wash. -Worn- Essentially, everything changed. Returned to a lighter(tried-n-true) sock system. Also, ditched the trail gaiters and the under shirt. Swapped to a lighter sun hoody and went with tights and exercise shorts. -Consumables- I’ve continued to dial this in for my Calorie needs and previous experience in this trail with water sources/needs. Food for 7 nights/ 8 days with extra snacks. Consistently carrying 2L of water with capacity to carry 4L, if needed. As with many other things in life, this will probably change and adjust as I get closer to giving it another go. Thanks for watching! Cheers!
We used AllTrails for this. There’s a free version and a paid version. I used, and still use, the paid version called AllTrails+ You can download maps for offline viewing. If you set your phone(Apple) to Airplane Mode, your gps is still active and you can navigate within the downloaded maps. I feel like it’s reasonably priced for what you get out of it. That being said, out of curiosity, I’d like to try Onyx or Far Out Guides at some point. Those seem to be more popular for the Big 3 US trails. Thanks for watching! Cheers!

Looks like an awesome trail! Well done. Crow
For sure. Got my summer gear list mostly dialed in now. Can’t wait to get back out and finish up the last section!
Thank You for the excellent video! I know that is a tough call to make.
Glad you enjoyed the video! Tough decision indeed. Can’t wait to get back out there!

No fee to camp on a National Grassland or National Forest. However, there is a fee to camp at Double Lake and Stubblefield Recreation Areas. Cheers!
