- This is an ancient Japanese axe, it is likely to be very old, if you know its age, please share. The face of this ax is slightly chipped and has a lot of rust, but the quality of the steel is still very good, It can be restored.
I started restoring this ax by re-shape the body and the face. I clean all rusty by grinding and polishing. I finish this restoration by making a new ax handle.
I really like the final result of this restoration.

That original handle was really cool. Very crude and simple like they broke off a tree branch and wittled it down. Very cool. Gorgeous restoration. :)
now make a custom battery pack for it! (great restoration)
That thing also needs rewound motor to be able to be powered from a battery too.

On the blade, most likely not a cavity, but forge welding. Welded a harder strip of metal. On the handle, a sample is made not from the front, but from the back. Since you made an ax will turn the ax from the hands when cutting, if only on the souvenir, hang on the wall.

A beautiful finished job but I'm curious, what's the reason for the axe head being that shape? A blow with the lower part of the axe head will only impart a greater bending force on the joint between the head and the shaft?
Prob to save weight and material
I believe it is shaped that way so the hand can fit behind the blade. In this way it can be used to shave on a push stroke rather than by chopping. Thus a shaping tool more than a workhorse

@@per_asperaad_astra3265 I'm in agreement. This is not a restoration. Restoration is not removing a ton of material for the sake of making it look new. The flowering from using the hammer side of the axe was a natural effect of its use and should have been shown off, not completely removed for the sake of making it look "clean". I'm surprised he didn't remove the makers mark entirely from the sides of the axehead.
Some people may like this approach to "restoration", but I see it as removing the history of this tool.
I’d stick to rebuilding battery powered tools.
I don't know. I haven't watched all of this video before commenting but this seems like modification rather than restoration the part you cut off in thr beginning, could you not have welded fill that area in?

You do know letting it get to hot will destroy the tempering on it so the edge isn't hard anymore. Besides that it looks great!!

Axe for light work only, with such a massive delamination on the blade I'd rather leave it as a relic instead of polishing the tur... whatever.
