I owned the seven string version of both of these for a while, comparing them with pop culture references; the Black Winters are akin to Jack Nicholson hacking through that bathroom door with an axe, while the Invaders are more like the Kool-Aid man just smashing a whole wall down. Both sound good, just different.
😂😂
This was amazingly helpful. A more vivid picture has never been painted.
That makes perfect sense. I can totally visualize it too 👍👍
I talked to the custom shop yesterday and they said that they’re both their highest output passive pickups despite the website still saying that the neck version of the Distortion is their highest-output neck humbucker.
@@acutemadnessboth of those statements can be correct at the same time. The Distortion neck is the highest output neck pickup. The Invader is a higher output bridge pickup.
I had an Invader bridge pickup once upon a time, and I loved it. I’m planning on replacing an EMG 81 with it. The Black Winter, though, pretty much has the exact tone quality I want in a neck pickup (and I heard it used as such in another video), so that’s probably what’s going to replace the EMG 707. I really appreciate being able to hear these side by side.
Do it. I swear by an Invader bridge/Black Winter neck combo. Lush, rich neck tones that fit my clean needs and dig in some dirt when I need to emphasize lead lines; and a bridge that gives me an attack that lets my rhythm cut through without being icy or mushy.
Invader = low mids
Black winter = high mids
Great video!
both awesome, two of my all time favourite Seymour Duncan Pickups, along with the JB and the Nazgul.
The invaders are definitely heavier, but the black winters I find are clearer somehow. That being said they both are phenomenal. It depends on what kind of player you are.You just can't go wrong with either of them.
Black Winters are more modern
Yeah. Strange though. The Invaders sounded clearer clean but the BWs sounded way clearer with dirt.
The invaders sound heavier and more brutal but the black winters sounded more refined and dark
I still think the Invader is my go-to. Without a doubt
Apparently, the Invader and the Black Winter are the exact same pickup, only with different polepieces.
The tonal differences come down to the difference in the ferrous mass of the screws which influence the overall inductance of the pickup.
Interesting. Sources/background?

Both sound pretty awesome to me!!! Comes down to personal taste.
I'm feeling the Black Winter. It is reminiscent of the Super Distortion. I like the Black Winter cuz it has a bit darker flavor. Paired with a 1 meg pot,it will brighten right up!!
I recently bought a set of Black Winter pickups, but I like the sound of both of these and also the Dimarzio super distortion. A comparison of the black winter and duncan solar plus would be interesting.
The invaders are full and direct. Black winter are just spellbounding. I don't think it's fair to compare them side by side: it must be done in a context - they will both come out on top.
Imagine a band playing music on two "axes" - on one SH-8 Invader Pickup set, on the other Black Winter Pickup set! Carnage!!!! 🤘💪😈
It seems a Black Winter has descended upon the Invader!

Surprisingly, I did like the Invaders a lot.
They are hella heavy, the cleans are unexpectedly nice. As what I can descern: Invader are hotter, heavier in the lowrange (pretty readable tho), a tad brighter in the presence range, highs are similar enough to ignore. The Winters are more clean and precise sounding to me.
They both are very very cool, not gonna lie. I like the Winters for their accurate and articulate sound. Hence as I read through Invader's description I thought "damn, bet these are obnoxiously bassy and fuzzy". Somehow I completely forgot that Hetfield recorded MOP on these pups.
But still, imma grab myself pair of Winters. They much too coll to ignore 'em.
Playing with my EQ on playback, it looks like the invaders are hotter around 100 Hz, while the Black Winters are hotter at 4Khz. So the Invader sounds "fatter", and the Black Winter sounds "thinner" by comparison. I personally prefer the Invaders as there is less midrange which must be removed by the pedal chain - I like a scooped sound.
I wonder if the invader had normal sized pole pieces if these would be literally the same. The difference almost seem to be from that alone.
Kind of a airy thickness to the invader where the bw has a crisp clarity. The larger pole pieces would react to the atring vibration more which i could see being a cause of that thick sound.
This review made life tough . . . Lol. I have an invader in my cart at reverb. Now i have to reconsider.
Have you done invader vs El Diablo?
I think the Invaders are slightly heavier for riffing, but aside from that, they're damn near identical.
💯
Black Winter +
Invader and Black Winter hammer on and pull off demo lol
The first ho and po i heard i thought it was woody the woodpecker theme
The distortion tones of the Black Winter are far superior. The Invader sounds a bit compressed due to the Alnico 8's.
Invaders are ceramic
Invaders are ceramic
Я уже на клине запереживал за black winter, но на гейне все равно выиграл именно он)
Invader es más sucia ligeramente más grabes , winter es ligeramente más aguda y limpia incluso en el palm muting
Yall want my opinion!? Yeah you do? Black Winter over Black outs, Invader SH=8 over Black Winter. I bout bought Black Winter glad I took my extra second to check these out. Now what Ill do is come on tomorrow and see if my ear changes. look for me a comment tomorrow.
Im gonnawritethis down
The tomorrow never came
@@JeanMarceaux Lol It never Did, I cant believe you caught that, I remember this. I did go with The Invader, I did not come back the next day and check it out. lol I got The bridge pickup only, Guitar still under construction. Thx for commenting you made me happy.
@@gunstarhero222 it's all good, Rock on, my friend 👺👍
@@JeanMarceaux Bruh these words arnt cool enough for u.
Invader sounds muddy, Im gonna go with Black Winter !
Ive owned then disliked invaders, gotten rid of them for other pickups then missed the invaders haha I guess I need to just stick with invaders
What did you dislike about them?
@@FuckinRiven Probably the bass dominance and giant wall of sound you can end up with if not careful about EQ.
Invader wins, the black winter sounds nasally in comparison.
black winter wins easy, the invader is just muddy like a stock pu when compared to the black winter, I have had both and black winters were the one I decided to keep playing with.
Easy to tune the gain and tone knobs while comparing the two pickups.how fucked up is that??
The only thing that I don’t really like about the winter is that it has a bit too much bass and not enough treble in the bridge position, but it’s a great tone overall.
