One of the best examples of honest redemption was Bartolomé de las Casas, a Spanish landowner in Hispaniola in the 1500’s. Like most invaders at the time, he was a racist, abusive monster… At first.
In 1515 he gave up his lands, slaves, and position to become a reformer and one of the most famous early Human Rights activists. He was known as “Defender of the Indians”, argued for their personhood before Charles I of Spain, and succeeded in getting the New Laws passed to protect indigenous peoples. Though his early efforts were somewhat misguided and sloppy (he argued for black & white slaves at first before condemning slavery altogether), he improved over time & spent 50 years fighting for human rights.

Depending on if the book was about what the person was going through mentally during the time in which they did those things then. While I would be kinda unnerved I feel like I would also kinda connect with the person on a deeper level and would be interested in what they were feeling like during that time. Also as a person I always feel that if you judge someone by one bad thing they did in their life then you haven't seen the real them in their entirety. I don't know maybe some acts deserve cruel punishment but for me it just kinda feels, wrong. Anyway great vid wander.

    @wagz781 2 ปีที่แล้ว +30

On the lovecraft thing: The dude was pretty standard for his time on the one hand, and just generally xenophobic on the other. It wasn't even based on race lines. He was just genuinely terrified of everyone equally including other britanic and european ethnicities. Hell, the shadow over innsmouth storyline was largely spawned from his fear of potentially being part welsh. Which is why it ends like it does. It's pretty morally dubious to judge someone by completely different standards to their own time and then try to be like "they CHOSE to be shitheels" when... they didn't really know it was a bad thing. I'll remind you that this was a time period when minorities were not even considered people, let alone cared about in any capcity greater than what we might think of farm equipment with. The fact that he toned down his xenophobic takes later on in life when one of his few friends informed him that what he was doing was, in fact, not ok suggests he was largely doing it out of lack of education mixed with fear. In fact his later works suggest he was trying to come to grips with the unknown to some degree. Trying to understand the things that were alien to him, and so feared and reviled in his early years.
If he were born today, he'd probably be your average tumblrite or twitter goblin with a laundry list of mental health issues almost as long as their terribly drawn webcomic that they've kept going on sheer bitterness and spite alone for an unreasonable length of time. Agoraphobia, discalcia, clinical depression, intense social anxiety, severe ptsd, and a few I'm sure more studious lovecraft historians can correct me on. I'm not going to sit here and say that the things back then were morally acceptable. Howard and many others like him are now understood to not be moral paragons upholding the aryan race. We've progressed a fair bit as a society since then. No, his modern contemporaries have learned subtlety and being aggressively offended for those woefully incompetent, infantile minorities they oh so graciously make a show of protecting. While it suits them anyway.
However, what I will correct is that many people take the understanding that howard grew up in a different time, with different standards when we enjoy his works. Because we can disconnect ourselves from the hatred and biggotry within his works to enjoy the stories in their entirety. Eldritch horror was born of xenophobia, and is characterized as horror of the unknown. What better father than someone that is utterly terrified of everything to the point of hatred?

Having witnessed the exact same thing before the internet was widespread, I can say that his beliefs are very reminiscent of “my parents acted this way, society seems to agree with them, and I have no conflicting sources of information, therefore this must be correct.” It wasn’t, but given how hard it was to get information around back then, I can understand where the beliefs came from, because I think just about everyone would be incredibly racist and xenophobic if that’s what they were raised in with no outside influence.

It's complicated, killing the author has long been discussed by people smarter than us.
"It was a different time" and yet history is filled with good people like Saladin, and bad people like Temyjin.
On the other hand, I know from personal experience that people don't become monsters overnight. A lot of people I know have parents who were previously perfectly sane, having jumped on crazy bandwagons like anti-vax in their old age.
One of my own experiences with this is Jeremy Blacks work sliding in quality, and his friendships evaporating. As he succumbed to his baser urges, and bloating ego over time. I have a hard time reconciling how much I enjoyed his early work with how much I can't forgive him for all the things he did.
With Ryan, we always thought his evil persona was a bit, and enjoyed it as part of the group dynamic. Looking back it's just weird to think about.
People also make mistakes, but if they refuse to learn from failure, or hear input, or don't care that they're hurting someone. It's not a mistake anymore, it's a choice.

Speaking as a pastor's kid for christians, your views on that topic hit the nail on the head. It doesnt bother me to talk about this stuff because i believe such sensitivity is the main reason its such a problem these days; if something does come up that bothers me i dont show it because these conversations NEED to be had.
My dad is retiring now, and basically the district said "You can retire or we will remove you" because he didnt care for the 'business' side of it, and thats all they cared about. I had to bite my tongue when he told me that.
Kinda funny this is on a game about a Cult, but Religion is basically a legal and not quite AS drastic cult. Only religion tries to convert people, only religion gives a shit about what other people are doing in their own time, only religion tries to punish those who are curious/ask questions (in a broad term, yes non-religious people sometimes do that but 99% of the time i guarantee theyre some hyper religious person if they act that way). I tried for several years to find a church when i moved out, hoping that it was just the small-town churches my dad pastored was the problem. It wasnt, if anything they were the easy-going ones. Nothing but hate for difference, disdain for slight opinion shifts, and extreme desire to control. I said screw that and stopped trying, and ive been much happier since.
For every legit, good religious person that actually yaknow read the bible properly (i.e. noticed the part that we are supposed to not follow the old testament teachings...) and is a wonderful, kindhearted person, theres 10000 hypocrites.
Sorry, i know you commented you dont really wanna hear others opinions, but i had to say it.

Fully agree with you on most of what you said regarding rights, which is extremely refreshing to see in a creator. Though I personally am of the opinion that no matter how bad the original work, the community around it can make it something that the original author ISN'T part of, one of the reasons I enjoy lovecraftian stuff isnt because of the man himself but because the elaborations that people he's known or even weird headcanons and fanfictions I've read have incorporated. It's the same with Harry Potter, looking back its a very...I don't want to say its a bad world but its very questionable (slave races, mind wiping government, "everyone in this specific school house is evil", etc.) and yet some of the works I've read made by people completely unrelated to Rowling are incredible, hell I literally have something on my watchlist about Gordon Ramsay being inserted into the setting to add some much needed support to the children.

"Devolver isthe best indie games publisher in the market"
That depends entirely on how much you value the indie /developer/ making the games, Devolver is always taking the entirety of the spotlight away from the developers, hell most peopole dont ever realise that devolveris a publisher rather than just a very efficient developer house, and the vast majority of devolver deals ends with single release indie studios cause they get crushed by that whole having 0 recognition thing and so cant drive their momentum to continuing on

I'm not so sure that DD is bad for their published studios brand recognition/continued success.
The devs behind Titan Souls, Hotline Miami, Serious Sam, Gungeon, Reigns, Shadow Warrior, Stories Untold, Absolver, Minit, The Messenger seem to all be doing rather well last I checked, are still making games, and will likely continue to work with Devolver.
I'm sure there are some issues, but from where I stand I haven't seen any yet.

Personally, as it regards the whole "separating the artist from their work", I'm of the opinion that conversation doesn't *start* until the author cannot actually profit from their work. Like, the Lovecraft debate is a worthwhile one, to me, because his work is public domain, and thus even independent of the entire genre's worth of works that ultimately derive from his writings, purchasing his books does not financially support his implicitly highly biased views anymore. On the flipside, I personally can't in good conscience continue to engage with the Harry Potter franchise because it provides substantial financial incentive to JK Rowling, and tacitly condoning her views.
In short, an artwork in its original form is inseparable from the artist while the artist still profits off the artworks' success. And even then, depending on the author and the work in question, it should be an ongoing debate as to whether or not it is worth attempting to separate an artist from their work on a case-by-case basis.

  • @travispluid3603
    @travispluid3603 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I agree that you should be who you want to be- except if what you want to be is a rap*st or a Mapper.
But I have also heard the stories of people who were pushed by others around them, specifically to transition, even when they didn't actually believe they were in the wrong body. It should be normalized to let you be who you really are, but some communities that seem to elevate it above being normalized, and instead want their personal preferences to be idolized, to be seen as better, more moral, and such.
And no, before anyone says it, I don't believe being gay or bi or anything is abnormal. I'm Ace, for example. But others do seem to think that being gay, for example, is a point of pride, like it makes them better than others. Sure, be proud of who you are- but don't think you're better just because you like guys or girls or whatever. You can't define yourself solely around your orientation. That's as shallow as defining yourself solely by your religion, or other aspects.
That is my opinion, which was unasked for, but I still felt compared to share.

Took me 15 years to finally get on hormones - "kids these days" are literally able to go out and start transitioning without going through even a fraction of what I did (even if things still aren't perfect), and that's so fucking cool to me. Nowadays I see a lot of the "but they're transing the kids!" shit is like... boomer grandpa dinosaur bullshit. Like the future is now, old man, get with it or get out.

tldr: categories are stupid, everyone can be racist, contact with other ethnicities and "social layers" (don't know how to say this in english) is good for kids
    in my personal experience:
    1. people who fear trans and lgbtq are too weak to be themselfes or are stuck in their way of thinking because of their education or the society they grew up in
    2. having a sterotype and being racist can be different things
    3. sadly, the most racist people who i ever met were a gay couple, they were friends of my parents and my mother booted them out after they demonstrated not being able to accept other ethnicities
which just proves that putting into categories like this doesn't make a lick of sense since stupid or "narrow minded people" (which is the polite way of saying stupid) are everywhere
    4. growing up in a very diverse area showed me, that most of the time the parents project their stupidity onto their children and when your children have enough contact with different groups of people this imprint of stupidity can be damped and from generation to generation we become better people

Hey Wander, great video and content as always, and just a little personal thank you from a NB fan. Speaking out against societal discrimination is never an easy thing, particularly in a public forum, and especially without the anonymity that those who use their negative world views to put down others often rely upon. Thank you for doing even just your own little bit to make this world happier, safer, and more accepting. Again, great video, I can't wait for this game, I'm certainly going to sink far too many hours to justify into this game

I can tell that I don’t agree with you on all of your politics, but hey, who cares? You make great content man! Keep up the good work!

I am asking to seeing if my views are toxic or okay cuz personal growth. My view is I want everyone to be themselves but no the the point it's a bother to others. Have your sexuality or religion or both but don't take force it on others. Idk is that a negative stance

The thing is, 99.999% of LGBTQ+ people aren't forcing it on anyone else, and the ones that are tend to either be actually mentally ill or just plain fake.
Yes there are things like drag queen storytimes, but considering churches get to do the same thing I don't see why it's a problem. They're optional anyway.
Most just want to be left alone and to have the same rights as everyone else, but since they're such an easy political target a lot of right wing media keeps making up some seriously heinous garbage about them.
