I love the resurgence of 'owning' the physical manifestation of music, not just vinyl but also tape (Fiio's new tape player comes to mind) and now this for CDs. I know for certain that having digital copy or having a streaming service is billion times more convenient than having to meddle with a physical hardware each time you want to listen to your music library. BUT I always feel like there's something missing, the 'ritual' or the 'mindfulness' I like to call it, are missing from relying on the convenience that a streaming service brings. I love the feeling of opening a new disk/tape/vinyl case, and looking at all the text and all the cool artworks. I'd love to see more of these on the market.
I gotta say, as someone who still rocks a high-end NAD CD Player from the late 90s and still owns a decent midrange CD Walkman, I’m glad good quality portable players are making a comeback. My CD collection is massive, and although all of it has been losslessly converted and put on my computer, it’s really nice just having a good player at hand. Still buying CDs today. And Vinyl as well. Love my high quality DSDs. But something about music on a disc or tape is just so tactile and satisfying.
Liner notes. Cover art. The joy of sitting and listening to a new album while you breathe in the music. Going to the record store and finding a one off pressing. These are given up when it’s all streaming. I love the chance to connect physically with music again.
Suuuper interesting to me as I'm currently looking for a CD player for my desk. Considering the Fiio as well, but this one seems a lot sturdier. Thanks a lot for the unbox, looking forward to the review 👌
To someone who grew up with digital, starting with a very first iPod, this thing seems whimsical. Especially in this day and age. Not ridiculous or anything, no. Whimsical. Thank you veryuch for this video and everything else! 🙏🏻
WOW! That brings back the good old days. I think the USB-A port is for music file mp3's flack ETC, via USB storage device. Enjoy it, it's good stuff obviously.
It is pretty amazing that Moondrop is starting to manufacture all these other devices. I saw an email where they showed passive desktop speakers. It should be interesting as we go into the holiday season.
As people mentioned here, I did not expect this. But good to see that physical media is having a comeback. I got some CDs laying around and Ive always found those cds with the paperwork kind of climatic(?) cant find a word for it - it just makes you feel the album vibe and what the artist is trying portray, I dunno maybe its just my millenial nostalgia.
This thing is pretty slick, had someone that needed my CD collection more then I did, so starting to rebuild it, think this just might make a great start! Cool to see you doing some hardware! Thanks!!
A very unique review you make this time I usually see IEM reviews but I'm also interested in something like this, an old fashioned audio item that is polish to look like a modern one but also the features it have
Missed out on the original discdream but this one is a little expensive. However, I believe the standard discdream 2 is available at $149. Much more affordable and hopefully they make enough that I don’t miss out this time.
I don't know about this one. I should probably wait out for the Fiio DM13 which has Bluetooth, with smaller form factor and looks more like a proper PCDP. Moondrop players look more like desk player types of units. That brings it just a little more similar to my laptop with a cheap disc drive and a dongle DAC hooked to it, i.e. not super portable. The doors don't look like they have a physical locking mechanism. Maybe a magnetic door, but that's not ideal for a true portable. And neither Fiio nor Moondrop looks to have the button lock feature which was present on nearly every anti-skip PCDPs back in the 90s/2000s. For the more authentic experience, I always use my Discman players with the in-line remote. But the sound output is always going to be mediocre compared to modern DAC devices. And I'm sure all of these new units have lossless anti-skip cache which I probably don't need to worry about.
Nice CD player! As an owner of many CDs,both original and hand made collections this is a nice and very functional piece of tech! ( As long as it plays both CD-R s and MP3 CDs also. Got lots of those too😊
ive actually been looking for a CD transport for a bit now. something small to add to my desktop Schiit Stack and front loading. recently got a limited addition 12in sleeved licensed to ill CD from Japan and have been using a $25 dvd player lmao. lead me to denon or pro-ject. love to see the hardware unboxings as much as the IEM and love that physical is coming back
I still own a very good CD player to play my collection which is not converted to files. It’s nice to know there are newer options and hopefully sound good too.
looking sleek, dunu also presented their one at sias, man that one made my wallet pop out of my pocket, don't have any cd at home anymore, not building a collection again so I'll save some bucks, but amazing design nonetheless. Good weekend everyone! ✌
I want one of these CD players. I'm glad these companies are bringing back physical media players like CD, vinyl, and cassette tapes. Now we just need an 8 track 😆 💯
This is very cool and as someone in the same boat as you it would be a very welcome addition to my desktop setup. I still have a ton of CDs and was just looking the other day for what I have that can play them. The best I came up with is a cheap two speaker mini boom box, is the best description I can come up with. I used to have a CD player and surround system in my daily driver but I no longer own that car after 20 years. So this is definitely a piece of kit that catches the eye and I would very much like to hear from you how you think it does it's job. Didn't know this existed so I'm going to have to look into it and possibly get one. Thanks Chris for as always bringing us cool new things having to do with this hobby. I pray this finds you and yours doing great. Take care and God Bless...
I miss the old days when you go to a record store and get to see the new releases. There are still record stores around but not a lot. Then CD's came and the music became less "noisy", "more clear". Music became "digital" (it probably already was during recording). Mini-disc, ipod and then the physical buying of music became a bit obsolete. Still have tapes, vinyl and cds. I listen to my music offline because I just don't want to be depended on an internet connection. Moondrop isn't the first of the chifi companies that bring out a CD player but maybe even more companies are bringing back more physical audio gear. Thanks for the unboxing video.
Cool that really reminded me of my scool days when you had a portable cd player you where a king 🙄when it was out of metal you became god like 🤑 i my poor self only got to have a metal walkman but from sony so i was a little bit higher on the social ladder 🤣 the so called good old days 🤔🤣. Have a nice day everyone
With the advent of online hifi streaming, it's just too much of a hassle to go back to using CDs. I miss the feeling of buying a physical copy from the store though and the excitement you get when you finally return home, sit down and unwind as you listen to your new finds. And that one CD you own that's your favorite it's full of scratches from being played too much.
Disappointed it doesn’t have any digital outputs. If it had optical or coaxial out you could plug it into an external Dac/headphone amp or a hifi system. It would also future proof the unit as you can plug it into better sounding dacs in the future. I have a little wooden portable cd player (it has 3.5mm, usbc, 2way Bluetooth and optical) not much bigger than a cd that uses an optical output to feed the dac of my hifi. It sounds great and it only cost me $60 on alliexpress.
Actually it is equipped with a balanced/single-sided 4.4mm headphone output and a 3.5 mm multi-function interface that has both a digital optical output and an analog linear output. During the unboxing he completely missed to show the right side of the device.
Your traditional audiophile will be all over this.. a cd player only transport is quite a thing to be coveted especially in the 2 channel world. There are a few hifi cd players still made but are like $2k+. Jays audio cd2 and PS audio PST are a couple examples.
I have to admit I was confused when these made a comeback in the last year but now I understand why. The constantly rising cost of subscriptions and geolocking content is honestly outrageous and people now prefer keeping physical copies more...
$289 is kind of crazy, but they make a cheaper plastic version. I’m surprised they made new versions, as the first Discdream supposedly had lots of issues, and disappeared pretty quickly.
Saw this in a few recent videos. I couldn't justify some of those super expensive CD players but I own enough CDs to eventually upgrade from the ps5 disc drive 😅
Wish I could just get a $200 CD transport with optical and coaxial outs with a good sturdy motor, minimalist design and nothing more. Technically it should not cost $20 for essentially perfection, but only audio people buy these so prices match.
I've been kinda interested in getting a good CD player since I want to listen to the Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom soundtracks which are only on CD
I been trying to buy the old v1 version asi have loads of cds but it's hard to find , it looks like it got discontinued very early, this looks too bulky for me but it would be intresting to know the difference v1 vs v2 in theres of power output and dac that's inside, I think v1 has no battery altho that's what's powerbanks r there for lol
Who wants a CD Player? I Do! Streaming is nice but I still maintain a healthy CD collection, so the need is still there. Thanks for this, man, I will look into it. 👍

Thanks a lot for the unbox, looking forward to the review 👌
CDs are my main source of music. This device is something I'll own
Really nice design. And good on moondrop for keeping CDs alive. I have not seen current CD players with this level of construction.
To someone who grew up with digital, starting with a very first iPod, this thing seems whimsical. Especially in this day and age. Not ridiculous or anything, no. Whimsical.
Thank you veryuch for this video and everything else! 🙏🏻

I still use my old TEAC as a desktop CD player and my beloved Sony Discman. I'm a CD since 1990 and this Moondrop CD player looks awesome!
This thing is pretty slick, had someone that needed my CD collection more then I did, so starting to rebuild it, think this just might make a great start! Cool to see you doing some hardware! Thanks!!
It looks well made and it reminds me a tiny bit of the old 1980's sportscars like the Testarossa. :)
A very unique review you make this time I usually see IEM reviews but I'm also interested in something like this, an old fashioned audio item that is polish to look like a modern one but also the features it have
Always has been, and always will be the best physical format for music: the CD
Missed out on the original discdream but this one is a little expensive. However, I believe the standard discdream 2 is available at $149. Much more affordable and hopefully they make enough that I don’t miss out this time.
I still have my CD collection, so this is an interesting piece of gear. It looks very nicely built.
I have a CD Transport that I use when I’m in the mood for a specific album or genre that I own.
Beautiful stuff, CDs

very nice for those who kept their cd collection taking dust for the last decade
ive actually been looking for a CD transport for a bit now. something small to add to my desktop Schiit Stack and front loading. recently got a limited addition 12in sleeved licensed to ill CD from Japan and have been using a $25 dvd player lmao. lead me to denon or pro-ject. love to see the hardware unboxings as much as the IEM and love that physical is coming back

A CD player wow that is nostalgic and moondrop did a great job with the design.
Did not expect a CD player. I remember going to the store with my lawn mowing money to grab a CD or two. =)
Looks pretty solid and a great edition ...still have CDs I want to play
Wow, a CD player! Amazing. Didn't see that coming.
so glad they did a second version of this cause i really wanted one...😊😊
looking sleek, dunu also presented their one at sias, man that one made my wallet pop out of my pocket, don't have any cd at home anymore, not building a collection again so I'll save some bucks, but amazing design nonetheless. Good weekend everyone! ✌

First diskdream got huge attention. I didn't know that many people used cds or waiting for a cd player.
I probably don't have the budget for this now, but would love to own something like this in the future!
Screaming nostalgic feels.. I dig this!
I was not expecting a chunk of metal, but it looks very cool
FiiO did the DM13 some time ago and Shanling had the EC Mini last year - apparently the discmans are having a comeback !
I'm still rockin physical media.
I have a changer and a CD Transport.
I like the top of the CD player. It would look good on my desk.
CDs are an amazing bargain these days. It's possible to scour used listings and shops to restart a collection of your fav music.
With the advent of online hifi streaming, it's just too much of a hassle to go back to using CDs.
I miss the feeling of buying a physical copy from the store though and the excitement you get when you finally return home, sit down and unwind as you listen to your new finds.

Nice unboxing CD players feels retro lol have a good one buddy
not sure i would call that portable. great review as always.
I got a shanling cd player recently and it sounds great!
A cd player in 2024! Wow, clean and nostalgic!
this makes me nostalgic for the old cd players

@@_s_t_e_f_a_n_o_oh, good to know. Thank you! I didn’t catch that when I looked at the listing.
Interesting to see a current gen CD player
In the future I plan to get both CD and tape player for my home setup.
Very cool. I don't think I have kept any of my CDs.
Man this looks dope. Got a 4.4 jack too!
CD quality is definitely better than streaming… but I would still pick streaming when listening on the go
Oh, I wish i could buy this one or the fiio cd player. Great for the cd collection i could not use.
Your traditional audiophile will be all over this.. a cd player only transport is quite a thing to be coveted especially in the 2 channel world. There are a few hifi cd players still made but are like $2k+. Jays audio cd2 and PS audio PST are a couple examples.
This reminded me i wanted to buy an external CD player for my PC
Don't need it but still definitely want one.
so cool. It gives retro hifi vibes
I have to admit I was confused when these made a comeback in the last year but now I understand why. The constantly rising cost of subscriptions and geolocking content is honestly outrageous and people now prefer keeping physical copies more...
There's something nostalgic about cd players, I kinda want one even though I've lost all my CDs
Wow! A portable CD player?! I haven't seen one in a long time.....
I'm not really into CD players but that thing looks neat 👌🏻
$289 is kind of crazy, but they make a cheaper plastic version. I’m surprised they made new versions, as the first Discdream supposedly had lots of issues, and disappeared pretty quickly.
I have boxes of CDs waiting for just this.
Something new after a very long time Chris 👍🏼
This brings to mind the new cd tech where you can store 1000tb on a single disk. Doesn't seem so crazy now.😅
Man, that is SO COOL.
Happy Thursday!
A CD player, Nice!
I miss the discman so this looks like a good option.
Saw this in a few recent videos. I couldn't justify some of those super expensive CD players but I own enough CDs to eventually upgrade from the ps5 disc drive 😅
I get vinyl, I kinda get CDs, but cassettes coming back is what I'm still trying to understand. I just remember them getting tangled for no reason 😅.
Wish I could just get a $200 CD transport with optical and coaxial outs with a good sturdy motor, minimalist design and nothing more. Technically it should not cost $20 for essentially perfection, but only audio people buy these so prices match.
I don't have a single CD, but that's cool
It would be cool to see original walkman style cd player with internal memory to have downloaded music in an all in one unit.
This one looks real nice. But shouldn't all the cd player with a optical out sound identical when used with the same dac?
I've been kinda interested in getting a good CD player since I want to listen to the Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom soundtracks which are only on CD
Happy Thursday!
Niche! Pretty cool...
Nope, not going backwards to CD's :) It might be great but not for me. Thanks for the show...
Cd player with batteries 2decades ago this would sell like chocolate
Moondrop's designer seems to be well aware of the sensibility of this era.
Perhaps the designer's age is expected to be in her 40s to 50s.
I have a CD player in my car, but I think it is the only CD player I have used in about a decade.
What a nice poster😎
I'm curious how many of these they will sell.
Thanks Chi-fi for bringing back the quality cd player that doesn't cost a couple grand
The original had a microSD card slot…
Oooh I actually need one of these for my girl, she has a ton of cds and nothing to hear them
Gloves where throwing me off for some reason. Are they necessary?
That little thing looks like a beast!
Who wants a CD Player? I Do! Streaming is nice but I still maintain a healthy CD collection, so the need is still there. Thanks for this, man, I will look into it. 👍
Never been into cds but this might get me interested tho 🤔
I still use my dvd drive from old desktop pc
WU TANG FOREVER 👐🐝
Moondrop are supposed to have speakers on the way, is a turntable next? That is really quite sweet looking
Happy Thursday
Lovely CD Player
Moondrop taking a note out of IGN's review "There's something for everyone!"
Is it supposed to be portable? I like the new one from fiio for a portable cd player. Still can't beat the original ps1 for cd player under $500.
Deja Vu. I wonder what DAC chip is used?
man i still have a decent collection of CDs
i mostly use my old laptop to play them
maybe it's time to get a proper CD player again....😅
Highway Star (Deep Purple)
Been wanting to get a discman, how's this compare to the fiio
