Switch Joycon Fuse

  • Have a joycon that stopped working wirelessly after you opened it? You probably shorted something with the battery plugged in and blew the fuse. When opening electronics with internal batteries, disconnecting the battery should ALWAYS be the first step. No matter, it happens, I did it myself even. I made this video to show how to properly repair this issue [by replacing the fuse].
    While technically these are 0 ohm resistors, they are used in a manner to provide an intentional weak link in the circuit. The idea is that, if there is a short between a voltage rail and a ground rail, this "fuse" serves as the weak link to avoid either overloading the battery or overloading whatever IC is having the problem. In normal operation, this should never happen but any time you have the joycon open, it is more susceptible to issues or any water damage could cause a short.
    My original issue was caused by me poking a tool where it didn't belong while the joycon was open and the battery still connected. Because I still had the OEM fuse in place, that part blew instead of the battery and means that I still have a working joycon after replacing a part that costs fractions of a penny.
    Fuses are safety devices and should NEVER be bridged.
    This is the part I used: www.digikey.com/en/products/d...
    Like I explained in the video, the reason discrete fuses are not used in this specific circumstance is that fuses simply are not made in this size. Or at least, the distinction between a 0 ohm resistor and a fuse starts to blur due to materials properties. The reason I chose this specific part, aside from being the proper size, is that per the datasheet, the part should blow if it passes more than half an amp of current. This may be a hair on the low side but I'll adjust upwards if I find that it presents an issue with regular usage. I have achieved a full charge cycle on this joycon after replacing the fuse though so I don't suspect it will be an issue.

    heh looks like that's actually an 0402, not 0201. Wew

      wish I would have read this comment and your comment on reddit before I ordered 10 0201 0Ω from your link and failed. Ordered a new joycon.
      Please for the love of Mario update the part link in this description and edit your Reddit post.

    It's crazy how much I have learned from your channel. Love all the little details you talk about

    Presumably having this issue with my right joycon too, though I haven't poked around with the multimeter yet. I foresee an order for a 0402 fuse in my near future. Halfway glad my dumbass shorted the fuse so I could find my way to your videos, you've amassed a treasure trove of information here, which is exciting for someone who has started getting into fixing electronics in the last few years (me).

    Thank you for reminding about fuses importance. I actually tried to solder a slightly bigger fuse above the original but i couldn't do it ☹️ so soldered a jumper wire😎🙈 but I'm not happy about it... i'll be fixing it soon, thank you

    Hey Makho, hope everything is swell.
    I just wanted to know as of ATM, which battery or batteries for the GBM do you recommend?
    Cheers.

    I got a kind of different problem. I bought a new battery because the old one die. But, after i put the new batterie, i can't power on my joycon and i can't charge it on my switch. BUT when i took the same battery on my other joycon the battery is charging.

    Damn that was a tiny component you had there. What solder iron do you recommend for that?

      "898d" clone is a good option for under $60. you can find it on amazon. it has a hot air reworks station built into it as well which comes in handy. very good temperature control and tips . just double check reviews on amazon first.

      tip is probably more important than the specific iron. TS80P is pretty good for something like this with a K series tip.

    Hmm... this might explain why one of my joycons stopped working wirelessly... is there any way I can check to see if this is the issue before ordering the part? Probing the fuse for continuity perhaps?

    • @makho
      @makho  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes, check continuity with a multimeter. No continuity on this part means you'll need a new fuse.
      Also, in case you didn't see my pinned comment, don't order the specific part I linked to. There's a better part that I will link once I test it.

    • @Avalon304
      @Avalon304 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@makho Yea, I tested my fuse (as best I could any way, it is rather small) and it appears that there is continuity... so I still have no idea why my Joycon wont connect wirelessly but works just fine when connected to the console. Luckily this is a spare pair, and my modded pair in ExtremeRate Dpad shells still work just fine..

    Do you know what causes the fuse to break?

    • @makho
      @makho  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've only ever seen it happen after taking a joycon apart so I assume improper handling.
