- Finally, it's done! My first ever voice-over video. God, this has taken a lot from me and after coutless rendering errors, tears and hours of stress I can finally show it to the world. I know it's not the best, but I promise the quality will only increse if they'll be enough demand for the next one. Thank you to my friends (Especially @arachnits for being my consultant) for cheering me on with this project!

one of my favorite concepts for dark forest mapleshade is that she's forever pregnant, which makes her seem like a simple mother, easy for cats to think less of her and be tricked because how could a pregnant she-cat be THAT bad?
I've actually seen this idea be used in a different dark forest Mapleshade design before, I wish remembered who the artist behind it was. It has some very horrifying impications

Brokenstar’s final design threw me out the window! His first concept had me thinking;
“Ooh, an eerie, unsettling threat. Pretty dang spooky”
And that final design made me think:
“Holy hell what unimaginable horrors will this monstrous creature unleash upon me and anyone unfortunate enough to encounter it!”
It’s fine. I didn’t want to go to bed to night :’) she did so great imma have nightmares now

SAMETHAT WAS FREAKY
Mapleshade's hidden part of her face honestly reminds me a bit of the split-mouthed woman. She was a woman in Japanese mythology who had her mouth split from ear to ear for cheating on her lover. Kind of reminds me of how Appledusk cheated on Mapleshade and, as a result of this, he caused for her to become an evil spirit after she lost her mind.

Yes, I know the quality of the speedpaints is very low. They got messed up during rendering but due to not having much time, I wasn't able to fix it. Same with the saturation. I know Brokenstar especially surffered from it, if you saw my twitter post of all the drawings side by side you can see he looks fine and not too dark

Definitely do a part 2 with other Dark Forest cats. If you do Starclan the Founders can be biblically accurate angels as well as Rock and Midnight. Cats like Thistleclaw and Ashfur who left or got chased out of Starclan can be fallen angels.

Listen I just realized this. You can literally make Fluttering Bird and One Eye godlike figures in the clans.
I actually had an idea about hawkfrost thanks to this, his dark forest form has beautiful hawk wings that he’s able to fly with but he’s always attached to a fox trap that is secured to his neck with brambles that rips his throat open every time he tries to fly, his fur is soaked wet due to his dead body being soaked in the river, also due to this his blood is basically water that if touched turns to Frost. ice surrounds his eyes forcing them always open leaving them looking bloodshot but still an ice blue, he has a shorter “teeth crown” in his head (similar to his father) and is always followed by a gold moth as his only companionship.
Edit: He also possibility has some leaches hanging on his body (reference to tadpole) but i thought it was a little too much.

the whole 'dark forest cats become more monstrous over time' thing actually kind of reminds me of one of my own hcs/rewrite-lore-bits!
basically, fading in dark forest cats tends to make them appear less... cat-like, and often monstrous, as time goes on. in the rewrite, fading is based on how strong a cat's grip on their personhood is, so even cats from the same time period fade to different extents.
so like. snowtuft is made of fog bc he's forgotten who he is, he's nothing and no one and so very alone and his foggy-ness reflects that. mapleshade always appears to be soaking wet, as though she just clawed herself out of the river, and has three maple leaves... somewhere on her design, although i haven't actually. designed her yet. ik i'll incorporate them somehow though. maggottail has a colony of worms in him because he's horrible and unpleasant. houndleap appears oddly doglike, etc.
fading also appears in cats who have largely held onto themselves; some loss of identity is just going to happen when you've been in hell for decades. they appear less noticeably different, though--willowsong (oc) doesn't need to blink, sparrowfeather doesn't appear to breathe, lynxheart (oc) has unusually sharp teeth, etc.

Reminds me of the book series Everlost by Neal Shusterman.
The longer someone has passed the more they forget, and start to look less like themselves when they were alive, and more monstrous in appearance

A concept I think would be good for sol is this: To start, his eyes are just black, blank eyes staring into nothing. Since their is no proof of how he died I thought it would fit him to die by being lured into a trap. So I imagine his body controlling itself as he tries to run, but instead he walks into an endless loop of bear traps being guided by an shadow. Of course I had to make a reference to his iconic action, the eclipse. So, he’d be walking into a circle trailing it with oddly colored, reddish-orange blood. (In the middle will be a black void). Just to tease the poor guy I decided that every once a moon he would choose a cat to be distraught by him, but when he sees that cat in dreams his mouth would be forced shut by thorns.
(I also thought about half of his body being a lying, guilty shadow. But I thought that just wouldn’t fit him as he was almost never the’shadow of anybody, also, it would just be too far) P.S. the reason I let him go once a moon is because he only deceived everybody. Never physically harming them.
Just so you know, you can take this idea (just try to give some credit for me) the only reason, I can’t draw. :’)
With Tigerstar it’s mentioned in the first arch that his claws are “unusually long.” I could imagine them curling into his paws and back out, growing longer and more deadly.
Mapleshades really went from not rlly tryna be a killing machine to someone who blends kits into potions
I really loved the Broken'Star concept. Although I'm a fan of mapleshade, broken star's idea of "eating kits" stood out as the creepiest. Sure having your fur hanging on her back when your just skin and muscles is scary, and putting reeds on your back to remind you of your doom is horrifying, but since I am terrified of anglerfish, Broken Star really captivated me. Also since I am scared of children, imagining them melt in acid is beautiful. Awesome job Pigeocore!
when you mentioned angler fish in relation to brokenstar and "luring kittens" my brain immediately jumped to the idea of a kitten carcass on the end of a rod on the top of its head which he bounces around to mimic life and get kits to come closer to play before lunging out of the undergrowth to swallow them whole

Gosh this has given me so many ideas! I adore this concept of dark forest cats turning monstrous to fit the stories being told and the legacies they left behind. I’m not a fan of horror for horror’s sake but this concept has reeled me in like a kit drawn to gleaming red deathberries. And so many people have shared their awesome ideas in the comments, so I thought I might too!
Snowtuft could be fading away, parts of his pelt and body becoming translucent, allowing Rootspring to see all sorts of dead and waterlogged orgins sloshing around within his body. Or his iconic scar could have claws growing out of it, or even full flesh like thousands of claws reaching desperately for the surface. Or he could have no face, being unable to remember who he is and begging Shadowsight to tell him what his name is. His brain perhaps spiralling out too, looking for something or someone to connect to.
Juniperclaw could be constantly sick and look horribly emaciated, juniper branches growing out of his skin but gleaming red deathberries replacing the harmless berries. Perhaps there are millions of mouths growing all over his skin, so starved they snap up the deathberries without a thought, causing him to violently wretch up bloody bile, nothing sustainable left in his stomach.
One-eye could have multiple eye sockets along his pelt, his one eye able to roll around within him and choose a socket to look out from. The veins and organs pooling out of his ripped open throat dangle limply, others dragging behind him. Perhaps they connect to little puppets, the veins acting as their strings where he can put on a show, able to connect new puppets and make them dance to his will.
Darkstripe could have layers upon layers of paws covering his mouth, the red juice of deathberries dribbling beyond his lips. Perhaps his eyes are buttons, himself turned into some sort of doll that’s attached to Tigerstar’s ripped pelt. But Darkstripe doesn’t mind one but, eyes gleaming, more than happy to be a subject, used by the king.
It would be horrifying if the least monstrous looking cat were Thistleclaw. His seemingly normal look lulling cats into a false sense of security, bringing them closer and closer. But once he would be able to reach out a paw and touch them, the illusion would be shattered. The monster underneath his serene smile making itself known but it’s too late. Tendrils of thistles peeling out from under his pelt have already secured themselves around you, you’re his now
Or even the spirits who were trapped in the dark forest. Perhaps they started to shift too, little by little.

my favourite headcanons are very similar to other ones spoken about in the comments - with mapleshade being eternally pregnant looking (but in a way that is a combination of all the horrible things that can happen during pregnancy and stuff) and a hole in her throat (death wounds, all dark forest cats have them in my little stories i write with my OCs 😅).
my other personal favourite is that hawkfrost has a wooden spike through his throat that makes talking hard and he is eternally sopping wet with blood from the wound and water from the lake; tigerstar being gutted like a fish and walking around eternally struggling to LITERALLY keep himself together is another personal favourite.
brokenstar i never really thought of but i'd like to think he is constantly foaming at the mouth and hacking up blood and death berries, that his eyes look mauled but he has eyes growing on the rest of his head instead (OR multiple bulging eyes squished into both sockets) and that his tail is almost grotesque in how bent and broken it is.

I really love the idea behind all of them, but brokenstar miiight be my fave just because of the little pawprints. I adore these ideas and the art! I love the idea that kits creating stories that describe dark forest cats as more teeryfying physicly actually makes them a little like that in real life. And oh dear Mapeshade looks fantastic. I interpret it as Ravenwing feeling genuely sorry for what he did and trying to make it up to her not knowing that while she was wronged by many cats shes now too far gone to bring back.
This is so cool! If you plan on doing a part two, could you do FreckleWish? I'd be pretty interesting to see your take on a cat who clearly doesn't deserve the treatment she got.
God this is so cool!! I love horror-themed Dark Forest designs and these are so creative and creepy, was fascinating to hear about all the ideas/symbolism going into them!! Anglerfish/gulper eel inspiration with brokenstar stuck out to me because I absolutely remember being freaked out and awed by deep sea fish in animal books as a kid.
(Also, I nearly choked on my hot chocolate at the spy kids trailer joke lmao)

I haven’t payed attention to the series in a while, but I love the idea of dark forest cats retaining their wounds from when they died and forever suffering from them.
I LOVE long speedpaint videos with voiceovers. Just seeing the test sketches compared to the final product is really satisfying! Also I love horror and these designs are phenomenal:D
these designs are really cool! i love the anglerfish/berry theme with brokenstar and maple being covered in reeds, it almost gives the idea that the dark forest itself is sort of assimilated into them, rooting into their bodies and keeping them trapped there. i would love to see more of this idea!
I'm in love with Mapleshade's concept honestly. I love the idea of her appearing soft, innocent, and seemingly misunderstood on the outside only to be gruesome, terrifying, and quite literally venomous upon further inspection. It really faithfully reflects how unreliable of a narrator she is in her book. She inadvertently tries to convince the audience that every cat around her is wrong, she is right, and every action that has a negative impact on her is done purely out of spite for her. The cats around her are purposeful and calculating in her eyes. They hurt her on purpose. She only ever wanted to have a family and be the best- not just for herself, but for every cat around her. When she acted in an unfriendly manner, it was because the world forced her claws not because she chose to, and if she did choose to, it was because they deserved it. When she made a mistake it was actually the fault of other cats. They did things that led to her mistake therefore she was cleansed of any fault and they deserved to be punished, not her. The reader ends up caught up in an unreliable telling of the events of her life due to her inability to accept responsibility for her own actions to her own self.
The soft sad look of her reed-covered face and hunched position reflects the hurt, beaten cat that she wants to believe she is. The sorrowful cat that the world had taken everything from and had been unfairly forced into committing actions that would lead her to the Dark Forest. When the reeds are lifted, the truth that Mapleshade herself refuses to acknowledge is left visible to all; the evidence of the choices that Mapleshade made of her own accord and the deaths and harm she has and may willingly cause.

You're description of them dragging them into a hut and then brewing them in a potion shot me to memories of Hocus Pocus (the 1st) when they lure Emily into their cottage. Also broken star might be my favorite he's really creepy and I love the paws it looks like theirs a kitten trying to paw their way out. (Maple shade is my second fav) And you should definitely do part 2 and I would love the corrupted angels I think crooked star would probably be one of them.
i love the eyes on brokenstar!! it reminds me of when yellowfang was talking abt him and one of the queens said “Dont let brokenstar hear you say that…” like he sees everything in the clan if that makes sense. kinda like darktail!

I absolutely LOVE designing ghost cats! I always make Starclan cats look "holy", like biblically accurate angels, but I always add a little bit of discomfort to them. Not enough to be scary but just enough to.... Not deny their prophecy or "wisdom". I also love designing dark forest cats! My favorite thing to do is to design them like distorted animals, or like "scary" mythological creatures!
For example, my oc Maggotmoth has a lot of maggots and moths (duh) crawling and fluttering around his corpse, spooky

This is such a fantastic video. Gorgeous art, engaging commentary, delightfully spooky! I would be so glad to see a sequel. Or sequels! The twisted angels idea is so intriguing!!!!!
Wow. I'm entranced by these designs and the amount of thought you put into them. Especially Brokenstar's, closely followed by Tigerstars (That skin idea was amazing). Mapleshade's design as a swampy river witch that has an appealing side and a disgusting side would fit so well into cannon as to why Crookedstar trusted Mapleshade (also because maybe the cats expect them to be extremely gorey and monstrous). I could imagine these all as cannon (if only the original characters had mentioned how grotesque they looked in the dark forest).
I feel like if Mapleshade had a familiar it would be a snake rather than a raven. It's portrayed in a lot of maps that she has a certain level of control over the snakes that killed frecklewish (despite this never appearing in the books). It would also fit her character well (harking back to the fact that snakes are known for being sly and cunning). Snakes go with the river theme too. But I really like the idea of Ravenwing being trapped as her familiar (and it would be so cool if he showed up in the books to do her bidding and potentially warn Crookedstar at the end about trusting her). If it was a snake maybe it would be Frecklewish after she died?
Anyways, I hope you do more of these. They are so neat and make the cannon series a lot more interesting to think about. It's always the fans that make the series better.
I like how broken star had death berries (I think those are death berries) for eyes, and the kits paw prints pushing through his belly just adds so much effect!

I love these designs! One thing I would have changed, however, were the clusters of berries on Brokenstar’s face. I think to further bring out the terrifying detail of his mouth, making the berries glow the same way the ones on the end of his tail did would illuminate his gaping maw. Keep pushing forward on your channel! Hopefully, it will become popular with time, and as your concepts reach other channels!

I love this idea, ESPECIALLY brokenstar. I absolutely LOVE the idea of a real cat being someone queens told their kits as a horror story. The gaping mouth just DOES IT FOR ME. I also love love love the concept of tiger star. Another idea I would have had for him was to make him frail and skinny, because he was famous for having huge paws and a huge build. So he’s the opposite. Anyways, awesome video. Love brokenstar

Personal idea I've always loved:That when the dark forest cats transform and become more monstrous that its extremely painful almost unbearable and starclan cats that were victims of these evil cats can visit or even see it from above and laugh at there agony as revenge for there deaths or horrible life's caused by this cat. I also like the idea where if the trainees stay in the dark forest for too long they begin to transform too and if they transform completely they won't be able to leave and are stuck in the dark forest forever. I also believe the evil cats mates and family can visit them but if they stay too long they'll be stuck there too. I also believe that walking or moving would be extremely painful for them too making it feel like there walking on knives or needles.

As someone who loves to draw stuff like this but is stopped by either art block or "what if mom sees this", this just gives me so much hope to go draw some creepy stuff when I can. The one that comes close is a personal design for dark forest Freaklewish where she has snakes crawling around her flesh. But then, me being me, all her snakes are her friends and she's loved in the dark forest for being able to care for the others and somehow being able to turn deathberries into a drinkable drink. Man I can't stick with complete creepy

If you do hawkfrowt you should definitely incorporate him dying by having a metal rod being forced through his neck into his design! Like he could have metal spikes sticking out of his neck and back like a lions mane to symbolise his relation to tigerstar. You could also use how is eyes are described to look like ice in the design!! But these are just thoughts u don't have to use them lol :))

I really love your art style! It's realistic yet cartoony in just the perfect way. It's calming to watch you draw, especially when you draw the head! I love how much you put into the designs to make them just right. The reasoning behind all your design choices, the unique parts to their body and their appearance telling their story.
Brokenstar's design was just wow. The deathberry motif was really really genius, the eyes were terrifying. The first concept was very intimidating, I'm glad you had the confidence to still add it to the video, and the final drawing made me awestruck.
Those designs are eerily amazing! I love how you incorporated symbolism into each grotesque character design! Especially Mapleshade with the Reeds dangling
off of her indicating Reedshine and the vision Ravenwing had. The raven that Ravenwing could have embodied, forced to reluctantly follow Mapleshade around. Love that idea btw. Brokenstars design heavily reminds me of the Garfield creepy pasta. With those uncanny large wide jaws and incredibly large body. The death berries tactic to lure kits from the comfort of their own home only to confront a terrifying creature is honestly genius. The thought and effort you put into these designs is outstanding. I love your drawing style. It’s so realistic and it really fits with the whole creepy concept art! If you decide to do more I will be enthusiastically waiting!

I am fascinated by stuff like this. Super creepy, but just that one step out of reality to keep it creative and foreboding. What I can't tolerate funnily enough is realistic depiction of death, like an animal hit by a car.
But a creepy zombie cat that wears his decaying skin kind of like a loose coat with stray eyes and teeth on his head, that's my bizarre bullseye!
Yea these all fit into the dark forest I like the idea of the forest corrupting the cats in it.
Ah!! These designs were literally so interesting and unique, especially the Mapleshade concept!! I love the idea behind both afterlives within Warriors having designs that make them more cryptic/monstrous and you absolutely pulled it off. The horror aspect with each design is so diverse from a literal two-faced manipulator to a luring baby eater- they all have such awesome details and I loved the process work!!

I’m not into horror, but my AU story is definitely pretty graphic. See, BloodClan is back, and far more sadistic than they once were. Things get especially brutal in the version where the characters are more humanized and use actual weapons; such delightful things such as BloodClan prisoners having their eyes ripped out with arrowheads, get flayed alive with a chainsaw, are fed feet-first and screaming through a wood chipper, and are even torched with an M2A1 flamethrower. Even heroes get in on it, plenty of their enemies take .50 BMG to the head and find out the true meaning of Pink Mist.
This was so entertaining! The concept is amazing too! I would love to see a part 2!

I love these designs so much?! I've always had the idea of the dead cats having symbolism to represent their time as a living creature but I've never been able to make it a reality but you've done these all so well?!

I recently drew some of my villain ocs as dark forest monster one named "maggotpelt" was a cream-ish tabby she-cat with blank, glowing white eyes and the back half of her body is like a maggot, centipede thing 💀 I love the characters btw❤
I know this almost certainly wasn’t intentional but your Brokenstar design keeps reminding me of the character Grizraz Hearteater from Tailchaser’s song (if you recognize the name but can’t place it, it’s the book that some people think at least inspired the names of warriors), probably doesn’t help that my personal interpretation of that character has the same weird mouth but still, I just find it cool

i absolutely adore body horror in art and i've had a headcanon of spooky monstrous versions of dark forest cats for a while, so i absolutely love these designs!

This video inspired me to draw all of my dark forest cat OCs as monsters and then proceed to just make horror movie scenes for all my Warrior Cat OCs, Poor Darkenedsight.
My household made some comments on Brokenstar that made me start cackling im shame. You got pretty close there but I feel like at the end he lost a bit of intimidation.

Honestly, i have the headcanon that Dark Forest carry the the cause of thier death forever, including the pain with it since Starclan Cats are restored to thier prefered and strongest form
So Tigerstar would be literally split in two, with its innards dragged accross the ground and him being unable to keep them inside
Or Brokenstar, his body forced to forever trying to vomit out the deathberries he was fed with, thier taste never leaving his mouth
