      @@abendrot___8055 The acrylic paint will be unable to stick to the oil paint, so it will flake off. This can sometimes happen very quickly, almost as soon as the acrylics dry, or sometimes it can take weeks. In any case, the acrylic will definitely flake off at some point.

    • @claudward6529
      @claudward6529 5 ปีที่แล้ว +57

      That really only applies to paint in process or recently painted mediums. If the oil paint is completely dried, in this case many years /decades old, it won’t matter about adding an acrylic medium over the top of oil. The theory of “fat over lean” still applies to any new paint but the ancient archival stuff has long lost any liquid/oil component over time

    • @claudward6529
      @claudward6529 5 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      KawaiiKaptian that’s not exactly the reason . Oil takes much longer to dry and if you paint over the top of oil with either acrylic or less dilute oil paint you’ll end up with that distinctive crazing /crackling that you often see in novice oil paint artists work. Remember the “fat over lean” principle - basically always put the quicker drying /less oil saturated layers beneath thicker oilier layers and you’ll be ok

      But you know one day , the oil will run out . At least that is what the peak oil theory states . I believe that oil keeps gushing from underneath the earth . Because we have capped well that ran dry and 3 years later oil is in the hole once again in abundance 🙌🏻 so where does the oil come from ?

    Always check what your painting IS online before painting over it. ALWAYS. I almost painted over a $130 dollar painting I got for 2 dollars at a thrift store because they don't check it.

      @nootnootimaboot8798 5 ปีที่แล้ว +219

      On one hand, yes, be careful and have respect for what you’re painting on. On the other, I’ve seen paintings sans skill or care go for 200-1200 at art swaps bc the buyers didn’t know what they were buying. Besides that, art is a good and a service and you pay for both, so value doesn’t necessarily reflect the value of the piece itself, and beside ALL of that, 130 dollars is the price of an amateur piece generally, so you would’ve been fine painting over it

      Ghoul Pen I think why some people werent happy with this video is because they wanted her to do something more respectful with the paintings and forgot about the part where they were abandoned and was probably gonna get thrown in the garbage, if she didnt pick them up. On the other hand if you totally destroyed a persons work for your own and others entertainment, disregarding the artist’s hard work, that would be totally disrespectful.
      Kasey REDESIGNED the art, if she didn’t it might have been thrown away.

    As someone who works in an op shop (Australian version of a thrift store) I can say that paintings that aren't sold will be destroyed after a certain amount of time on the floor. Kasey made sure these didn't get thrown away and possibly extended their "life" expectancy. She did a good.
    Edit: I’m an artist as well and if someone had brought a piece of my work and drawn over it I wouldn’t care. It’s like a collaboration between two artists. The art isn’t entirely Kasey’s and it’s not entirely the original artist’s either. Kasey didn’t defame the person she merely gave it a face lift.

When I die I literally don't care what happens to my work, I'm dead and gone and I wanna be in peace. This sounds really harsh but the dead don't need it anymore. You have to come to peace with things and someone continuing and transforming my art after I'm dead is honestly a nice way to pay tribute to myself. Art is meant to be shared with others and showing your own little world and universe and someone introducing their world with mine is just amazing. Edit: ive asked around a bit at some of the people who work there, barrister signed paintings were made namely in the seventies. Some paintings have been sold for more than $1000, however it is mostly aesthetic and/or sentimental value. Paintings this size in good shape can easily be sold for more than $200 though. Couldve been a great find in a thrift store.

    You are fusing your refined, cartoony, sylistic art style with these traditional styles, and it is so freaking cool.
    I'm an artist and I work in both more traditional styles and stylised characters, and if one of my artworks was used for this purpose, I would be beaming.

      Now, I'm not saying this is definitely the case, but it's totally how a *lot* of those paintings get made. It's about creating something, not about what's created. Those artists, either they've moved on with their art in different directions, or they've moved on from art entirely. One of those paintings was 40 years old. That guy's probably doing WAY different stuff now.

    Adding belated love to this video. This was the first video of yours I ever saw and I didn’t like it at the time because I had very narrow expectations of what I thought you should do with a thrifted painting.
    BUT you had so much fun with it and were so pleased with the results, PLUS it matched your existing art style, so I knew that no disrespect was intended, so I wasn’t one of the people who left a mean comment. I make an effort not to leave mean comments on anyone’s videos but in this case I didn’t want to taint your obvious joy. It makes me sad that so many people were mean about it that it made you cry because I think back to that video pretty often when I’m watching your latest videos and compare my initial reaction to how I feel about it now.
    Seven years of watching your videos has inspired me to be less precious with my own artwork and to embrace the silliness inherent in creating. I mentally credit you when I look a lot of the silliest things I’ve ever made because I don’t know if I would have ever made them without remembering you calling your own work “silly” and meaning it as a compliment.
    And when I saw the title of your newest video, my initial reaction was excitement because my attitude toward this video has changed so much throughout the years.
    All that to say what I’m sure you already know, people’s reactions to you are more about them than about you. Keep doing you. ❤

    A lot of comments are upset by this... but:
    1) It's possible it's not the original, so it doesn't matter.
    2) If they ARE originals, why are they in thrift shops? If the artist or the artist's family didn't keep them, or sell them to something more than the equivalent of a Goodwill, it's not worth that much (and even if they were, money isn't everything, sheesh!), and they certainly don't care that much about it.
    My grandma was an artist. She died four years ago, and I have all of her pieces still to this day. The thought of taking them to the thrift store *in the first place* is more disrespectful than somebody buying them there and painting on top of it. I would never take my grandmother's pieces to the thrift store, and if that's how some of those pieces ended up there, I'd be more mad at my family who donated them there, than at the person who bought them to do as they wish.
    This is also a MUCH better use of the paintings, considering if (some) thrift stores get too many donated than they can sell, they will end up in the trash anyways! Y'all need to calm down.

      That being said, from a conservation standpoint, you could EASILY varnish the painting (with a removable varnish) and use some conservation paint if you wanted to do this, as it wouldn't affect the painting at all underneath if you wanted to fix it.

    As someone who has sold original of my work before... I honestly dont care what happens after someone buys it. 🤷
    If i enjoy the piece i photograph it before selling. Thats my way of keeping it as i wanted. After that its up to the new owner. Ive had commissioners get inked pieces from me and later ask if they could try coloring themselves... Why would i stop them? They bought it, its there art now. All i require is that they dont take credit for the original. 🤔
    Otherwise if im that attached i dont sell it...

      Edit: I REALLY enjoy people attacking me in the comments. Fellas, i know my art is trash, you dont need to point that out. An artist of that skill level can easily pull off that small and that simple of a landscape. Yes art is hard, but i dont think that skilled of an artist is going to spend months sweating over a small winter scene. Also, someone paid for that painting with their money. Then it went to a thriftstore. Then kasey bought it. Its her property and she can do whatever she wants with it.

Selling a piece absolutely does not equal that the artist doesn't care about it any more. I absolutely adore her style but that does not change the fact that she erases someone elses work.
      Not to forget that those three paintings were really good quality for something that you find at a thriftstore. She could've taken the beat up piece and actually patch it up. To finish she doesn't even use a proper medium over the oil paint. Acrylics do not work well with oil paint and is prone to break or shift colour. I usually love her work but this vid is truly upsetting.

      Grace Sellers - You were the one who used the term “collaborate” not me. I was just clarifying that the words definition literally means more than one person working together on something. Either way, in regards to your point, I can only reply with my opinion as an artist. Every artist should know what it feels like to put time and effort into a piece. The feeling you get when someone buys your piece because they appreciate it and want to hang it in their home is something that’s hard to put into words - even if it sells for $1. Even if it ends up in a thrift store 40 years later. Those pieces could’ve been appreciated by someone as they were intended. I wouldn’t want the original theme of my pieces altered to someone else’s unless I made it a point to say it was okay to do that and was looking to collaborate with people online.
      And by the way she painted on an oil painting with acrylic. You don’t do that if you intend on keeping the pieces for long. It damages the oil painting underneath. She may not have been aware though.
      This is just my opinion though. It hurt to watch this video 😖

    I'm not upset that she painted on someone else's painting (that's actually funny and cute). I'm mad she didn't take the time to practice with and learn a new media before embarking on the project. Acrylics are very fun to use, ONCE YOU LEARN HOW. They are not like water colors at all.
    Kasey, since you asked for tips: Golden is a great paint, very high quality, very high pigment. First mix your color, then you add water to the paint on the pallet and blend the water thoroughly into the paint. A little paint goes a very long way. You can affect the transparency somewhat with how much water you add. If you are very careful you can even mimic a watercolor effect, but that takes a good bit of practice.

    Tip for acrylics!! There are these things you can buy to keep your paint fresh for MONTHS. It’s called the Sta-Wet palette. It’s basically a tupperware container with a wet sponge in the bottom and palette paper on top, and because of the wet sponge, your paints dont dry out when you arent using them. Its so useful for when you want to put down a painting for a while, but don’t want to remix your colors. Plus you waste so much less paint because you can use the paints so many times! I feel like I should mention, since you spoke about being new to acrylic and oil paint- that the two more realistic landscape paintings, look to me, like they were made with oil paint. The issue with this is acrylic paint can't go over oil. It may last years, but after a certain amount of time, it will start to peel. This is because it is water-based vs something oil-based. You can put oil paint over dried acrylic because it is fatter, "fat over lean" as they say, but not the other way around. I hope the original paintings were acrylic though! And if you already knew this- sorry to bring it up! I just felt it may be good to know. I only know about this from spending two years studying painting in college. Awesome idea and the paintings look great!

If you sell your artwork you are consenting that the new owner of the piece can burn it, paint over it, or leave it in their attic collecting dust. Really anything, plus it's probably been a while, and the original artist was or is much better now and doesn't care about some person ruining their work. Like old work you probably think is bad. Weird and silly and I LOVE THEM! What a great idea to get unwanted paintings from the thrift store and make them your own.

    The biggest difference in acrylic and watercolor painting from my perspective was you work dark to light instead of light to dark. I start with a light to mid tone to outline and put basic forms then go in with more defined strokes working dark to light. Also you should try working in thinner layers and see if you prefer that. The dry time definitely tests your patience. I have ruined a piece by working too quickly

    I have no problem with Kasey doing whatever she wants to these paintings, because she bought them. I just know that I definitely wouldn't be happy if someone painted over my art. An artist takes a long time to make something beautiful, especially when it comes to paint and so it just feels a little disrespectful to me that she painted over the original artworks...could she not have made a copy and painted over them. BTW that Barrister painting could have been sold for quite a bit of money. Always check if something is an original and has some resale worth before painting over it.

  • @eirinjensen

    I find it very interesting how everyone seems to be loosing their shit over Kasey doing this? As if this haven’t been done hundreds of times before.
    We literally had this as a school assignment!!
    It’s not disrespectful, those paintings were in a goodwill, they would probably have ended up in the trash, now they got a new life!
    Chill.

    Lack of detail doesn’t necessarily equate to lack of skill. There are artists who make beautiful, very simple work.

      @jennypeardon7508 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Absolutely! I felt a little uncomfortable at that phrasing...especially with Kaseys style being simplistic...it looked pretty well executed!

    • @katkanen2171
      @katkanen2171 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      she clearly stated that she was looking for detailed sceneries/portraits so that there would be as much contrast to her own style as possible. it was never about skill level.

    • @mrs.honeynuts
      @mrs.honeynuts 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      But, let’s be honest here- More detail is just better in most circumstances :/ it shows the artist truly gave that piece their all and 99% of the time the piece just looks better with more detail 👀
      But at the end of the day, the artist gets to choose :0

      katka nen at 16:15 ish she says the third painting didn’t have the same level of skill because it was lacking detail? Idk I just found that phrasing to be at odds with my own-admittedly very subjective-view on the piece

  • @VanessaLoveCounselor
    @VanessaLoveCounselor 5 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    I like your honesty here-- "I just right in.... I was getting impatient." I also paint on old canvases that I find or buy. I've done it a couple of times. Not many people on the internet have liked them but my husband loves them and loves having them up in our house. An issue you might have later is that you used acrylic over (most likely) oils and varnish. Oils and acrylics don't often mix. I haven't done it so I'm not sure if it will peel eventually or if something else happens. It's just one of those, "oh hey, these things don't work," type of advice from whatever classes I've taken.
    I also remind myself, when people are so shocked that I'd paint over a painting, that if anyone wanted the painting or if it was worth anything, it wouldn't have been in a thrift shop.
