Bed, wardrobe & washer stack in Mediterranean tiny apartment

  • With only 25 square meters (270 square feet) to work with, Yuda Naimi decided to think cubically when redesigning a tiny apartment in Barcelona’s Raval neighborhood. Taking advantage of high ceilings, he created a furniture bed perched high enough to provide: a double bed, two nightstands with electricity outlets, a deep cupboard for hanging clothes, 11 drawers, a washing machine and ample storage space for the flat.
    The bed cube can also be partially disassembled to provide accessories to the rest of the space: “Each side of the furniture has multiple purposes: a shelf for drinks or extra bench placed next to the dining table, or the stairs/drawers that lead to the bed which can also be used as seats, becoming part of the adjacent entertaining area.”
    Naimi also streamlined the structure of the apartment by removing a false ceiling to reveal a vaulted ceiling (traditional “Catalan vaults”) and a brick wall. On the final wall he discovered hidden space; with this extra 5 centimeters he had enough to create a “function wall” of 5 nooks. The first houses a recessed bookshelf, the second hides the television behind repurposed shutters and the third is a sunken mirror that reflects and enlarges the space.
    At the back of the flat, the kitchen appears when needed out of 2 nooks: one is a recessed cabinet that reveals a sink and opposite this is a simple wooden cabinet that hides a refrigerator and stove.

    When he closed the shutters, I thought the lighting in the living area was impressive - it changed the whole mood.
    This apartment has such a lovely feel to it... amazing! It doesn’t feel like you’re in the middle of a busy city... it feels like you are travelling in time!

    One of my favorite designs. I absolutely love the ceiling and brick wall. I understand why he tucked all the storage and washer in bed unit. The unit divides the space nicely without destroying the sense of overall space the way a loft bed would. If you put in a Murphy bed and closets on walls it would look like a bowling alley. His design defines three rooms. I would recommend two identical rectangular person tables in front of tv and mirror that could be joined together or end to end for larger gatherings. And kitchen doors that slide into walls. Or maybe a nice shade that rolls up. I would center the sink so you could have dirty dishes on one side and drain rack on other. Love the doors. Would enjoy living in such an historic building in a central location. It does give a tree house effect. Well done!

      I would moved the washer away from the end of the bed and towards the wall next to the sink to avoid a potential fall. As it is, that "false step" could be a safety issue since it isn't fixed in place, especially for guest who are not familiar with the furniture.

    • @lql1094

      Or find minimalism ridiculous unless it's all you can afford.
      🙄🙄🙄🙄
      Also, this is poor use of space. With those high ceilings he could have easily used the vertical space.

      @@pau1976 It’s mostly in older houses, or even old shops, that have been converted from single family homes into (studio) apartments, and because of profit margins, the landlords feel no incentive to invest in plumbing for each unit they rent out.

    • @_w_w_
      @_w_w_ 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This is renovated for the owner. If you are having apartments to rent out, how the heck do you install the plumbing and washer right under the bed? That is so customized that it would greatly restrict the flexibility for a lot of renters.
      In addition, you should wait until the plumbing/hoses age a bit and see how it difficult it is to service those items.

    • @peadar-o
      @peadar-o 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@pau1976 It’s not just planning approval, which is important to ensure safe homes, but as is shown in the video, with a small space, you can plan for all the minimum required for a self-contained dwelling if you allow your imagination some leeway. The kitchen could have had a cooker & oven, but as was mentioned, the owner is an artist who also uses the place as a place to show his work, so kitchen was not at the top of his list of priorities, but a washing machine of his own was. I guess that is luxury of being the owner, as opposed to being the tenant.

    I currently live in a tiny apartment and have binge-watched a lot of these tiny apt/homes here on TH-cam and this is easily in my Top 5 as far as space utilization. I personally love the placement of the bed. Having seen a lot of these straight/long studio layouts, I appreciate it when the bed does not directly look into the kitchen. It still nice to have that separation and this apt does this effectively.

      @@eljimberinoq5518 Sorry, have no clue, I stayed there years ago, but Barcelona is huge and the neighborhood in the video is in the middle of Barcelona proper, so the prices must be very high, while the apartments are old and not so good by modern standards. You can hear everything from outside and inside the building.

I plug it in when I need it and put it away when Im done. for smaller things, I have a small toaster oven. I have an aversion to things occupying real estate when it is not used, so my bed is hidden as well. a bed or a stove is beautiful when in use, but when it is not, I would rather not have to look at it, or having it take up space.

Why wouldn't they be space saving tables where they can be made smaller when not in use? Ones with flip up sides only take up 5 or so inches, or leave one leaf up, even. They would be so much better to work around and walk around, plus a lot of them have drawers in the center for table ware or crafts! And another handy item is the rolling kitchen cart.

    some things I love, the height/volume of the space makes it feel so cosy. as mentioned, it feels like a safe treehouse, with everything one might need.
    the only nitpick is the 10 - 15cm protrusion of the bed build from the entranceway. it would have been so beautiful if it was flushed to the wall, so you have full light pouring in instead of the visual obstruction.
