    Thanks so much for the video! As a kid I witnessed the 1954 parade celebrating the arrival of Browns, who became the Orioles. Saw my first game there in 1955 sitting on the splintery bleacher sits, and in later years saw games played in 4 World Series. It’s predecessor, Municipal Stadium was built in the ‘20’s. Baseball wasn’t played there until 1944, when old Oriole Park burned down. That same year the O’s played in the Int. League World Series, and the attendance outdrew the Major League World Series. That drew attention to Baltimore as a possible Major League city, which happened 10 years later.

      Memorial stadium will be remember for the junior Orioles kid day around 1979 to 80 Era kids loved Eddie,
      Lee.Mays Carl Ripen Sr. in his early. Years The whole. Team They had a package for several seasons getting free bats balls hats. We were
      even in parade on float for world series 78 or 79. We
      Really enjoyed those games. The stadium was in walking distant for us
      It was a wonderful time for our kids.

    When I was stationed near Washington DC, I drove in and caught a game at Memorial Stadium. We just drove in got tickets in the mezzanine, and remember they weren't too expensive! Friday night double-header, don't remember the teams. We were down the first base line, the stadium was kind of empty, so we moved closer to just inside first base. When the usher came to check our tickets, we slipped him a 5 spot, and he spent a lot of the evening chatting with us! Good seats for baseball, probably not for football.

    I went to the Y in Waverly for nearly a month before realizing it was at the old memorial stadium location.
    It’s clearly from the old days of stadiums just being in the middle of neighborhoods like Fenway and Wrigley. My dad got a brick from memorial stadium when it was torn down.

    A true Baltimore icon of the past. Unfortunately I was too young to remember it but that stadium was something else. I love the retro-futurist aesthetic design it brings being opened in the 1950s, it was probably the most impressive and state of the art venue of its time when it opened its doors for the very first time.

    Got to see a single Orioles game, a Stallions game and the Ravens play the Seahawks in 97, and so.e of the players in that game were Ray Lewis, Warren Moon, Ricky Watters and Vinny Testaverde. You forgot the Baltimore Stallions of the CFL. They won the Grey Cup in 1993 and that gave Art Modell the impetus to move the original Cleveland Browns to Baltimore (which due to a court settlement, had to leave the team name and history back in Cleveland and adopt the Baltimore Ravens nickname and status as an "expansion team").

    My brother and I were at the the playoff game between the Steelers and Colts in late 70’s or early 80’s. When a plane landed (crashed)into the upper deck of the Monument end of the nose bleed bleachers. The mighty Colts were defeated by the lucky Steeler by around 44 points. I don’t think anyone was injured (except the drunk pilot) the upper deck emptied well before because of the score and the cold weather.

    I went to a baseball game there in May 1991 when President George Bush and Barbara Bush hosted Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip. Yes, the Queen if England went to an Orioles baseball game. It's even more memorable for me because I, like about a dozen others, parked on the street in a No Parking Zone and had my car towed away. Came out of the stadium and my car was gone.

    I don't think Joe Robbie was built for multi-use. I believe it was adapted for baseball when Miami was granted the Marlins. But I could be mistaken. Also the 1953 Colts weren't an expansion team. The 1952 Dallas Texans were an expansion team, but failed miserably. They moved to Baltimore and became the Colts during the off season.

    • @forgottenplaces9780
      @forgottenplaces9780  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Robbie was built for multi use, hence the large space from the sideline to the field plus many other features such as retractable seating. The colts franchise doesnt recognize the texans so I guess tho not an expansion team in the tradtional sense the new team was historically est there.

    • @MJSIII
      @MJSIII 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@forgottenplaces9780 Joe Robbie was built with the ability for baseball. It was not built as multi purpose as a priority it was built by Miami Dolphins owner privately financed. It was later explored for baseball with modifications need for baseball with some stands being moved/renovated. As originally built would not have hosted regular baseball games.

    • @Bruce12867
      @Bruce12867 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, the Baltimore Colts franchise from the All-America Football Conference went 1-11 in 1950 and folded thereafter. The current Colts franchise came from the remnants of the Dallas Texans franchise (the last NFL team to fold), which was purchased from the NFL in 1953.

This marks the only time a US-based team has won the Canada's supreme football title. It was only with the move of the Cleveland Browns to Baltimore that the Stallions went out of business.

    Most multipurpose stadiums were better suited for one sport over the other. Memorial Stadium was better suited for baseball. The best seats were behind home plate which would be one of the end zones for football. A good football stadium would put the best seats at midfield. Even during baseball, there was too much foul territory because of football and so you weren't close enough to the action. My dad would take us to memorial stadium all of the time. The tickets were inexpensive and always available. Only went to one football game there. It was before the Ravens or even the CFL Stallions came. It was a preseason game between other teams. Sadly we were too young for him to take us to a Colts game and he died right before the Ravens moved to Baltimore. The Colts leaving was the reason why Camden Yards became baseball only, and the popularity of Camden Yards really spelled the beginning of the end for multipurpose stadiums. We have better stadiums now of course, but sometimes I still miss Memorial.

    • @ravenrick58
      @ravenrick58 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the preseason game you mentioned was the Saints vs Dolphins game in 1992/3. Baltimore was bidding for one of the expansion teams that would become the Panthers and Jaguars. They got to host a preseason game to show the league how serious the city was to have football back. I was there also.
