    I played HS hockey in Michigan in the late 70’s. Hockey was blowing up. We made it to the state championship and had maybe 3500 people in the stands. The level of play was very high. Today? They play in front of under 1000 at some lame rink in Plymouth. It’s sad. Minnesota teams play most of their season on lame rinks with no fans, but the state tournament makes up for that. They also let Junior and travel players play both HS and travel at the same time, which Michigan doesn’t. That’s why MN teams have more depth.

      Michigan today has only 4 of 5 teams that can play to this level. Every year the number of schools that drop hockey increases. It’s sad. I played in Flint in the late 70’s. We had 26 HS hockey teams in the county. Today? 2 are left.

    • @calvinbaII
      @calvinbaII ปีที่แล้ว

      @@acerothstein4755 Isn't club hockey much bigger in Michigan though? Yeah, not having tons of grassroots level support sucks when the school system isn't involved but the talent level is still really high at the club level which matters most I'd say. It's the same thing here in Canada. Midget AAA Major clubs here might only get a few hundred fans a game but there will be like 7-8 CHL draft picks on the ice and the quality is high. Tradeoffs.

      mike hanzal Give the kid a break. Eden Prairie had played 3 games in 3 days and 2 of them were OT games.. The first game went into triple OT - one of the longest in Minnesota history. The first game of the tournament went so long that they were going to suspend the game until the next morning at 8 am, so the winner would have had to play another game later in the day. Eden Prairie played the equivalent of 4 games in 3 days. I’m sure the whole team was pretty exhausted and you could see it on the GW goal. Everybody was just kind of standing around. Eden Prairie outplayed and completely shut down Edina for the entire game aside from about 5 minutes and deserved to win.

    It’s amazing how big the MSHSL’s boys state hockey tournament is- 18,000 people in one arena for a high school tournament game? That’s unheard of in most other parts of the country.
    Meanwhile, the WIAA’s boys state hockey tournament in Wisconsin is so laughable. It’s played at a USHL arena that barely holds 3,000 people.

      ehhh, not really, it's just the depth of the teams... i suggest you watch some minnesota high school selects games, mostly made up of players who will play Division 1 NCAA / Major Junior or at worst Junior A AJHL/BCHL

      @calansmith9561 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah except these teams are stacked with NCAA D1 players and soon to be USHL players... and a couple NHL draft picks... also Jr B rosters are stacked to the gills with 18-20 year olds, these kids are average age of 16.5 or so.
