Switching from cat litter to horse bedding saved me over $60 . Same 40 pounds. That $60 went into a savings for any vet bills . DIdn’t run my furnace for 2021 as it broke on Christmas night and I couldn’t afford to fix it. Fixed it in June when I had the money . Only used central air for 4 days in the summer of ‘22. Electricity went from $298 a month to $91 . Saved $77 a month by doing away with Direct TV and getting a Roku . Dropped separate flood insurance and got a combination policy . Saving $50 a month. Switched car insurance to Allstate Milewise . It’s for people driving less than 10k miles a year. So I went from $123 a month for two cars to less than $40. I switched to United Health Care from Humana . Healthy food and otc items allowance was $75 a month . I get $205 a month from UHC . Gas for my car is less than $30 a month. I no longer buy paper towels and napkins since I bought 50 washcloths from Temu . They were 10 for $1.88 . They are my napkins . Old tshirts are rags after I’ve worn them 5 years buying them 5 for $10 at AC Moore. I have 6 cats , 1 dog and I only feed them canned food once a day . Their other meal is homemade and that cut my pet food bill in half . Stocked for a year but still buy it monthly and rotate it . I’m happy I found you ladies and Mike . Living on less and with less made my money stretch so I live comfortably. I love being retired . Working 78 hours at two jobs was getting old fast . I paid cash for my property and my move leaving me with just SS .

Most Americans are spoiled, they have no idea what it is like to be truly poor or to truly do without. We grew up living on my father's disability ( he was injured on the job) we had hand me downs, we had chickens ( eggs and meat) we bought fresh milk and butter from our neighbors. Mama made just about everything from scratch. We as children thought we were rich, I am so thankful for the life lessons God taught us! We learned to be content with what He provided! Lord bless!

Makes a big difference if a house is insulated on the heat bill. I lived in a very small two bedroom duplex, kept the heat way down and wore a jacket in the house. The bill was 350. a month. Now living in a five bedroom house, insulated really well and the heat bill was 75. last month. That was for heat, hot water and cooking. I think the highest bill in the dead of winter was 125. makes a big difference to insulate.

In regards to Christmas gifts, an older couple from our church found one of those little children’s kitchenettes a neighbor was throwing out. They offered to clean it up for me and hold on to it until Christmas. I’ve been keeping empty spice bottles and may spend $3-$5 on kitchen items from goodwill for my 3 yr old.

My sister lives on $700 a month social security with $89 a month food stamps. She pays $425 for rent in a senior place and barely scrapes by. Her biggest problem is prescription costs. At times she ate a can of green beans for dinner. I helped her for a while until she had to go live with her daughter. No, she did not tell her family she was having problems. Many elderly will not ask for help.

Yes, I've gone through a bit of resentment that I have to curb my lifestyle, but am encouraged by this video and the help of a budgeting coach friend, I can do this. Yes, being faithful to God by trusting Him also helps to settle me down. Yes, my house is paid for. Even though I'm in California, my property taxes aren't much at all ($814 annually) because we never moved up in house. Free entertainment - my husband bought me a camera when I retired. Photography and posting on Facebook is free. Yes, cut the cable. $250 a month down to $49 a month just for internet with a different company. I could go on . ..

From what I understand, they will raise you SS benefit to match what he was making. In other words, if he was making 1200 a month and you were making 1000, they will raise your SS to 1200. We have been debt free for many years and try to be very careful with money...our lives have never been problem free, but we believe God is taking care of us...we don't worry about what others have...in our lives we have seen couples who spend like crazy and are so unhappy and some have even divorced...grass is not greener with another partner unless there was abuse...love all the wisdom on this !

Love money saving tips!! I have a couple for you. I make foundation last a bit longer by making my own tinted moisturizer, mixing as needed. And Brillo pads will last a very long time if you wrap the pad in aluminum foil straight after each use and store in the freezer. No rusting whatsoever. When the soap eventually washes out of it, just use your own and keep using.

Time is more precious than ANY bought gift. My daughter gave me a booklet of self made vouchers that she had hand written with things like 'making cups of tea all day, having a home movie night with popcorn and snacks, a hug, a promise to pay for a haircut, washing the dishes one night.. this is my most prized Christmas present ever as it was all things she knew would make me happy. (Similar to gift experiences that are often bought but so seldom redeemed in time.) This year she made her friends home made gifts and she's 24 now and thoroughly looks forward to coming up with ideas of gifts that mean something or show how much she cares.

On budgeting...Just because you initially allocate a certain amount, you can change that. A budget is just writing down how you want to spend your money. It helps you set limits. If you were able to spend $10 and get all the "gifts", move that $90 extra into savings, bills, etc. or roll it into the next month for that category. Don't just spend it because it's in the category. A budget is NOT written in stone. It's a roadmap. It's a plan. You choose (with your spouse if married) how to spend the money. If you put $25 a month into "clothing" you can save that each month until you can buy the item you want.

Yes, I’d have to quit fooling with my thermostat. I’d have to follow a grocery list better, etc. I’d have to THINK before spending. Though I don’t spend a lot, I know I could do much better. Living simply, buying generic and sale items, and choosing to limit your expenditures - best ways to spend less, therefore saving money. Love the advice in your videos! Being able to grow a few veggies or herbs helps keep the costs down, too. Also, knowing how to mend the clothing you have enables you to spend less because you don't have to replace as many worn/torn socks, jeans, etc. One other thing is when you have money come in (from whatever the source is), you put a portion into your savings account FIRST.

Ahhh thank you Katie. Never had anyone ask me how I eat my chocolate before. LOL I do have a system though. If I buy bags of the mini candy bars I will eat 2 a day. Sometimes one for a snack in the morning and one in afternoon or both in afternoon. Just depends. I do miss a day sometimes. If it is a regular size candy bar I will eat about 1/4 of it and a giant candy I will eat about 1 inch of it a day. Now every once in awhile (like around Christmas) I will loss total control and eat 4 -5 pieces of fudge every few days. I eat almost anything. My favorite is Hersheys and especially anything with nuts and caramel. Oddly enough I really like Hersheys just as much or more than expensive chocolates. The only thing that I am not too fond of but still eat is chocolate with fruit flavored anything. Right now I have a bag in my closet with peanut m&ms, almond joy, chocolate covered payday, milky way. I can't wait for Christmas though because the kids usually get me a box of Turtle's. Oh yum!!!!🥰🤭🤣🙃😍

And what’s worse, our elec. co. is NOT an American company! They’re owned by a company in ENGLAND, who promises a certain return for their shareholders’ stocks! What the heck?!?😭 I had our home paid for in TEN YEARS on our 30 yr mortgage, by paying an extra $50 on the PRINCIPAL ea month that it was possible . That way you’re knocking down the total amt you owe, not just paying the interest!🎉

Thank you for sharing. I pray viewers take heed cuz living basic is something we will all have to do maybe sooner than we think. I’ve always done most of it, I grew up that way. If I can share something is cook everything from scratch, it’s healthier and much cheaper.

The lowest I would get is 68F in my living room. Today it is 8F outside, dropping to 0 over night. Inside I have the heating on, and the woodburner. Its not all about saving most money, I need to be comfortable. 😊 I can stretch every penny on everything else, clothes food, transportation, but I refuse to freeze in my home. 💕Life on 60 degrees north 🇳🇴

Growing up we used worn out towels cut up into cleaning rags. I have a friend that uses cut up towels and washcloths to use for “ toilet paper”. She keeps clean knees in an old Baby wipe box and the soiled ones in another container. Then she washes them separate from other clothes.

    • @rgmeadows7712

Yes, it's important to watch the humidity and run the AC or a dehumidifier when it is high - otherwise you run into a mildew/mold problem, and that can be more expensive in the long run! They are expensive to run but necessary much of the time in areas of high humidity. Even in Ohio, I can almost get by without it, but most summers have some periods of time that mildew/mold become a problem if I don't run AC or a dehumidifier.

I couldn't live that cheap, my rent alone is $850, electric $200+, internet & cable $250, phone $50... Nevermind food and and and!!! My 2 grandchildren live with me too do they are VERY expensive!! I ONLY shop at thrift stores and Goodwill... and watch my money carefully (that's easy when you have none!) but it flies out of here! Thanks!! 💕🌷💕

Something frustrating in my area ,our utilities have minimum charge for the privilege of using them.
Even if I don't use any heat at all I will pay $40 for elec AND $40 for gas . They are billed separately.
Then we have trash, water , sewer and street waste water at about $55 per month. But our home prices are low because we don't live in a designer area .

Tawara, I live off $1196 monthly from Social Security. If I had not gotten into trouble with my credit card, I could live off that $750 month. I did the $20 weekly grocery budget for many years too, until Medicare started giving me $50 monthly for "healthy food", and then I found out I was eligible for food stamps ($88 monthly). What a boost, especially for my pantry stocking. Next year, the food stamps are being cut to $83 monthly, and Medicare will increase that healthy food allowance to $52 monthly. I will be just fine.
My utilities are approximately $200 monthly. My auto insurance on my 2005 Buick LaCrosee is $562 every 6 months.
I don't buy any new clothing unless it comes from the thrift store or a garage sale. Most of my new clothing is from my local buy-nothing group. I have been blessed.
Toiletries, I do buy toilet paper from Sam's Club. I buy a container of body wash and it goes into a rinsed out pump bottle - $1 tree hand soap bottle. The same with shampoo and conditioner, and dish detergent (I am the dishwasher in my home). I clean with baking soda and vinegar. I use rags to clean, not paper towels or even bought hand towels. Even on my floors, I attach rags to my swifter sweeper and wet jet and get it done. The rags wash well, and are used again, and again. Cat yak, yes, that's a job for a paper towel, followed by a vinegar soaked rag that gets rinsed out, and washed, same as the floor cleaning rags.
For entertainment, I do have the internet, and a dvd player. My sister-in-law sells stuff at the flea market, and gifted me 8 binders full of movies that she is unable to sell, due to copy right laws. I don't have cable period.

I found myself unexpectedly unemployed and have had no stress because of the choices I make on a daily basis. This is an example of the benefits of our daily choices! Lifestyle IS a choice and in an economy like this make good choices! Even if you start today it is better than having a victim mentality. Every choice makes a difference!!!!

I believe Jill. In 2004, 2005, I lived in a 1 bedroom apartment, and paid about $20/month for electric. I think the gas was around $50-60/month. Daycare was more like $650 a month, in contrast. I worked full time Mon-Fri, so I wasn't using the lights and heat while I was out, didn't have a pet to keep warm while we weren't there, didn't have cable to watch all day and keep the power running. We put the TV on for a little while on the weekend, but weeknights we made dinner, got baths, and read books. I think the size of the place makes a big difference. Where I've lived in PA, people would block off heat to some parts of the house to save money. Often in the summer, parents would have a window AC unit run in their bedroom for a little while on summer evenings to get to sleep, sometimes there would be another one in the living room for the hottest part of the day, and some people would hang blankets or close doors to keep it to that room.

So many people are used to luxury that they don’t even recognize it as luxury. I get upset with my daughter for keeping her home so warm that the grandkids are comfortable going barefoot. What!?! They could save a lot of money just wearing socks & sweaters. My slippers are so warm if the heat is over 62 I’m sweating
Something you haven’t mentioned is God’s provision. He has given you the sense to figure out budgeting and Jill’s history with little car repairs sounds like a straight up miracle

For a couple of years in Georgia, our furnace was broken. We had to use space heaters when the weather turned cold. My husband would go to work, but I couldn’t leave the house. If I did, when we came home, the house would be so cold that we had to keep our winter coats on for hours. On the other hand, when warm weather comes around in a hot climate such as in southern Florida, mold grows everywhere if the a.c. is turned off.

I don't understand why people can be so critical! Yes, they are justifying spending money they don't have. Yes, jealousy or envy. I admire you for living sacrificially and enjoying it. Some might moan and groan and not you. You seem genuinely happy. What a great role model you are. Personally, I love to eat so I choose to spend more on food. I also have a husband who makes enough for us to eat the way we want. (I do have to exercise regularly.) On most other things I am very frugal. Love your sharing of your faith as well!
