    What a wonderful tribute to the epic performance by Clifton Stroud of Abide with Me back in 1998. Fortunately, I was one of the few priveliged individuals present when he played this piece, that ended up on the 1998 CD "Emerson Richards Masterpiece". Interestingly, during our recording session in Nov of 1998, I was tasked with playing several pieces for the CD, including "Abide with Me". For some reason, I was having trouble with the pedal part. As history would have it, Clifton Stroud just happened to visit the hall and announded that he could play the piece. The rest is history. It was a stunning performance. Most people are unaware that at that time (Nov 1998) only part of the Right Chamber was working. Today the organ is many times bigger. Thank you, Jon.

      Thanks a lot! I'm going back in a few weeks and will have more time to truly explore the organ properly. I'm planning on bringing a Zoom portable recorder to get some better audio this time!

    Absolutely wonderful. If it's possible Please repost it without all the talking and back ground noise. It's a great rendition. 💜

      Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. Unfortunately, this was an open console event after a show, so people were milling around, etc. However, I just uploaded another recording done in a quiet room, playing How Great Thou Art. It came out MUCH better!

    A few years age, the Boardwalk Hall suffer flooding and damaged some of the pipework. I believe they have or are in the process of restoring the instrument. Have to love the enclosure surrounding the huge console!

    I never met Clifton Stroud, but he lived and played near where I grew up in Virginia. I’ve always heard how magically he played this, and you’re certainly doing the same! BTW I was fortunate enough to play (and tour) this fantastic instrument several years back.

    That was truly the most AMAZING rendition of Abide With Me I have ever heard!! 🎶💕🔥. I was also watching Carl. He looks familiar. What is his last name and is he a local organist? Both of you did an amazing job of navigating your way around the beast!! 👍😍. I would love to hear both of you play again. Thanks 🙏

      I suppose you could but there wouldn't be anyplace left for the congregation to sit

      First Congregational in Los Angeles, Riverside Cathedral, New York, Crystal Cathedral, Anaheim, California. . You can put as much organ as you want into any church, just as long as you have the space.

    I always thought the biggest organ in the world was at Macy's in Philadelphia, but it looks like I was wrong.

    • @quinnriutta
      @quinnriutta 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yes and no, the Macy's is the largest fully operational pipe organ, this organ is still being restored, when completed it will be the largest organ in the world.

    • @NateDulcimer
      @NateDulcimer 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe both can have a claim, it depends on whether you count the total pipe count vs the number of , iirc

    • @KingdaToro
      @KingdaToro ปีที่แล้ว

      It's close. The most common measurements are pipes and ranks. Boardwalk Hall has more pipes (33,112 vs 28,750), the Wanamaker has more ranks (464 vs 449). This discrepancy is because many of Boardwalk Hall's ranks have 85 pipes for a 7-octave range, rather than the usual 61 pipes for a 5-octave range. This is reflected by the Great and Choir manuals, which also have 7 octaves, just three notes shy of a piano keyboard.
      Boardwalk Hall's organ is also in the process of being restored, and is currently 64% operational. Going by number of currently operational pipes, the current top five are:
      1. Wanamaker: 28,750
      2. West Point Cadet Chapel: 23,511
      3. Boardwalk Hall: 21,597
      4. 1st Congregational Church of LA: 18,094
      5. St. Stephen's Cathedral, Passau: 17,774

      The Wanamaker organ is far less unified. It has more real stops rather than unit stops derived from extensions and a very impressive console. At this time neither of them are in their original state. Everyone is so fascinated with gadgets that they original mechanism is now scrapped and replaced by electronic controls - which will last for about 20 years instead for 50 to 70. The Wanamaker organ is far more practical. Much of that organ was build in the Wanamaker organ shop on th top floor of the building. But all that is changed as well.

    WOW!!! For being the largest pipe organ in the world (Which it is not) that is very soft. gentle. And something is way out of tune there. I expected so earth shattering, ground shaking sound that would blow the cones out of my speakers, after all that is a real 64' stop in the pedal, I didn't even see one quiver, much less the building shake. That sound like a large 3 manual that can be found in any church. Even European trackers sound more "Earth shaking" than that.

      The biggest thing hurting the sound quality here is the cell phone it was recorded on. With a proper rig, this organ sounds amazing. If you look on my channel, I have another video recorded with proper condenser mics in the middle of the room. Here you can tell what the organ really sounds like. It's called "How Great Thou Art on the World's Largest Pipe Organ"

    FYI, this is not the largest Pipe Organ in the world...
    The Largest Pipe organ in the World is in Atlantic City NJ at the original Convention Hall..
    33,112 Pipes, which exceeds the Wanamaker Organ by approx 2000 pipes.
    Now, this is currently the largest PLAYABLE Pipe organ in the world and is also in the #2 spot.
    The Midme-Losh organ in NJ is in the process of a complete restoration.
