      It also works if you wrap a few of the threads around the bolt, but if you add too many you run the risk of having the threads lock before the bolt goes completely home. In a pinch for non heat environments a bit of electronic tape will work too.

    used to work with a mechanic that did side work. He had a side "customer" - an elderly lady that never drove her car out of that small Montana town and rarely exceeded 20MPH .. for maybe 4000 miles per year. Needless to say, the engine had more carbon than a bag of charcoal. Once a year, Larry would do a "tune-up" on the car, that actually consisted of little more than letting the engine get Hot, revving it up, and slowly drizzling about 10-12 oz of water into the carb. The amount of black smoke and soot deposited on the floor at the end of the exhaust pipe was dumbfounding! He would then change the plugs, oil, etc. The old plugs looked nearly new after their "bath"

      Gotta love the Italian tune up to. My mechanic gets a few jaguar xjr's that never get driven hard, gets gummy injectors, then they miss and run like crap. All he does is adjust tire pressures, fluids, and a hard test drive. The customer then comes back saying now way just those things transformed the car

      Tap the holes for STUDS. get the bolt size for engine in 10.9 that are long enough and cut the heads off. Get nuts washers and viola youve got studs now. For a small gas engine theyll last the lifetime of the crankcase👍

    I doubt the Antifreeze is doing anything useful. It's all the water. In fact if anything the Antifreeze is interfering with the water's ability to turn into steam effectively reducing the cleaning effect strait water would have. How water injection cleans carbon deposits in an engine is the water droplets land on the carbon deposit partially soaking in. Then the water is heated by the combustion pulse into steam. The steam takes up well over a 1,000 times more volume than liquid water. The pressure from this inside the carbon deposit breaks it up where it is then carried away in the exhaust gases.
    Basically this is a process where you want steam, but the whole purpose of antifreeze after stopping water from freezing is to stop it from boiling, you know turning into steam. So for better results skip the antifreeze. Also using clean water woun't contaminate your oil.

      During a high school shop class the teacher talked about "top engine cleaner" basically it's water with a little alcohol in it. Get the engine up to temp and then stream it in and keep it running. Then when about half is used up dump the rest in and let it die. Wait 20 mins and then drive it down the road for about ten miles on the interstate. Blows most all of the crud out. I did something similar with my 03 4.7l a few months ago. Ran a aquarium air line into the engine bay to a vacuum line after the throttle body and ran about two liters of water through it. Had a little blow past the rings but it floated on top of the oil and after a single trip the water evaporated off so not worried about it. Using pure water won't hurt the cat system either as often times a byproduct can be water so it won't hurt it at all.

Why I ask is because wd40 is thin and engin oil would make the rings seal better- maybe? In a pinch I have use wd40 for a cleaner and it would remove all the oil on the oil control ring. I've been watching your channel for months now, mostly late at night on my TV. I only recently subscribed, sorry for the delay in supporting your excellently entertaining and informative channel.
    I would like to see you test radiator sealant products. I used something called copper seal or maybe it was glass seal (not sure which brand it was as it was like 16 years ago). Anyhow, I had this 83 Thunderbird with the V6 (notorious for blowing head gaskets) and it overheated one day and after that it would actually pour water out of the tailpipe like a garden hose. I suspect the head gasket did indeed let go. So, I bought this product and followed the directions to a T. It took probably three hours to finish the treatment. As the time passed during the treatment the water pouring from tailpipe slowly decreased until it completely stopped. I did no further repairs. I drove it about another 10K miles and felt confident selling it to my Sunday School teacher for his son. He drove it for several months with no problems. I am confident you can devise some type of test for this purpose. Actually, that is one of my favorite parts of your channel, the ways you come up with to perform your tests.

    As far as the AF effect on the oil, I have a story of my own to share. I built my 383 stroker for my '70 C-10 and was losing AF. The radiator had a leak, the heater core had a leak, so I didn't think too much of it. I wasn't aware how much was really leaking.
    One day I drove my truck, and I watch the oil PSI like a person obsessed with not melting my several thousand dollar investment, and the oil PSI was fine. I shut the truck off. Went out to start it a few hours later, no oil PSI.
    I checked my stick and it was dry.
    Put some oil in and had PSI again. Drove it a few miles home. All was good. Checked oil level the next day - none again. But there was globs, like jelly on my stick.
    Poured some oil in again, had PSI. Got it warm and pulled the oil plug. It pooped out. It had the consistency of room temperature strawberry preserves.
    My AF leaks weren't all external. The intake was leaking into the crank case and the oil was doing exactly what it was supposed to do. Trapping contaminants.

    On another note, have you considered using your lubricity tester to do a shootout between several popular motor oil brands of the same viscosity? I know it might seem like an obvious one but you’re always hearing people say brand doesn’t matter; it’s all about the oil spec. Would be a good test to determine whether this really is the case. I might be wrong, but I think he already tried that. But I wonder if there would be any difference if water mist is used (a real mist, made by an ultrasonic mist generator). It might work better not only for cleaning, but supposedly it should also decrease fuel consumption, that might be worth testing as well :)

I know that other in the past did it with carbed vehicles and had fairly good success. So if he did and it didn’t work, then I’m not sure why it didn’t work so well. Off to the archives to look! There was an old-timer back in the 90's who reconditioned R/C airplane engines. I gave him a couple of old ones my great uncle gave me. When they came back to me newer-than-new looking, I asked him how he did it, he told me he boiled (cooked?) the block/head and parts in anti-freeze. I have never tried, but this video reminded me of that old story. I enjoy your videos.

      Bill ATF at any amount will not clean an engine. It has less than 1/1000 as much additives as a cheap oil. ATF does not have more detergents than engine oil! WHy would it a transmission does not need any detergents it is a fairly sealed system with ZERO combustion products. Just like hydralic systems do not have detergents in them in any amount they do not need them. The base stock in ATF is junk compared to what is used in modern crankcase oil. Why dont you send an email off to any oil or atf formulator about this and post their response. I have been trying to educate people on this topic for over 20 years and am getting tired of wasting my time. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sperm_oil www.amsoil.com/newsstand/drivetrain-lubricants/articles/transmission-fluid-as-an-engine-flush/

    Awesome video man, I watch all ur videos 👍🏻. I have a common rail turbo diesel truck and decided to install a catch can and blank off the egr. Because of the way the engine is set up u get a lot of gunge build up in the intake manifold. After installing the catch can and blanking plates I took the manifold off and cleaned it with oven cleaner, worked like a bomb. Maybe try spraying oven cleaner into the carb to see if it’ll clean the engine. Not sure how safe that will be though 😬.

    When I changed my leaking head gasket you could easily see exactly where the leak was coming from. Mine was leaking between #2 and #3 cylinders, and those pistons were spotless, emanating at the common cylinder wall. But, like you said, I would not do this just to clean out the combustion chambers, as the risk isn’t worth the reward.

    • @EricFixalot
      @EricFixalot 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Andreas Glatthar, I’ve never heard that one. I’ve been told flushing with brake fluid can help an older slipping automatic transmission. It will make newer transmissions worse because the bands are a different material or something though.

    • @mannys9130
      @mannys9130 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Eric Fixalot Kinda. Adding brake fluid to a transmission that slips due to leakage of pressure will cause the leaking seals to swell and hold pressure for a short time. The seals become very soft and degrade rapidly thereafter. This was an old scummy sales tactic used by crooked dealers, sort of like using gear oil in the engine to mask a rod knock or adding saw dust to the differential to mask the whine of a worn pinion gear. The leaking seals would hold up long enough for the car to be bought, and then they'd disintegrate shortly after the buyer used it for a while. We now have specifically engineered compounds that rejuvinate seals in a controlled, predictable manner. High mileage oils contain these additives to help with shrunken, hardened old seals. These compounds work very well when the seal is not too terribly damaged, but of course you can't buy magic in a bottle.

      ATF doesn't need much detergent to be an effective cleaner because it is composed some pretty powerful petroleum solvents, namely Naphthenic, Propanol and Toluene. It also has some very powerful dispersants that will keep sludge in suspension until it can be delivered to the filter for removal from the oil stream. As such, it makes a very effective internal engine cleaner when added to the crankcase at each oil change. Testing I personally performed back in 2005-2006 using as low as 5 weight synthetic oil shows it is the addition of the ATF, and not the thinness of the oil, that is responsible for the cleaning effect observed. I speak primarily of Dexron III, as that is the type I am most familiar with the composition of.

    That's really impressive! I love the videos. Definitely some really bad don'ts. I wonder if you could have some videos showing practical things that actually improve the smog test results and don't ruin the engine.

    Have you tried using water instead of antifreeze in the same cleaning manner? I had old mechanics tell me to dump water in a hot engine to "steam clean" it- never wanted to try on my own though...

      Don't dump it in, do a drop at a time or spray it

      If you dump water in an engine, you might as well kiss it goodbye. Mist it if you're going to try it.

      Nabre Labre I didn’t literally mean dump- I meant dribble or trickle like the antifreeze

      Engine steam cleans itself as it runs. What do you suppose becomes of the fuel?

    What would have happened if you had used pure anti-freeze instead of the one mixed with water?

      I concur, I suspect it may have simply been the water cleaning the carbon as the glycol would have just burnt with the fuel..
