When Rupert and Gordon Killick are looking out the window Gordon says "most of us are too wounded to run" but Rupert should try. Rupert says the British are still thick as lice on the field. So the British you see are a fraction of the army surrounding that cottage. Also, what happened there is historical fact which Diana Gabaldon used. As was the letter (actually a diary entry) Roger shared at the end of S2. That's how DG knew her hero had to be a Fraser so he could fight at but survive Culloden. The diary entry didn't explain how that one lone Fraser survived; this was the solution DG came up with.

Claire waited two years after Frank died to take Bree to Scotland . Somethings happened at the hospital where she worked and she took a leave of absence. They showed up as Roger was clearing out the estate after the reverend had died.

According to the books, there were red coats swarming the grounds outside the building. They knew it before the red coats entered the buildings, and they knew it was unlikely that even one man could have slithered pass them to freedom.

They did establish that there was no escape. The countryside was crawling with redcoats. The Highlander army was all dead, wounded, captured, or on the run. The ones at the house who could run wouldn't leave the others behind. What I find strange to my own emotional reaction is how Roger mentioned offhand in the last scene of the season 2 finale that a bunch of wounded Jacobites took refuge in an old house and "then they were all taken out to be shot" except for Jamie. So we already knew this, but the way the episode draws it out, and we know that the sound of each gunshot is Jamie losing another brother, so to speak, is absolutely devastating.
I also find it really weird that Lord Melton's clerk didn't get why Jamie had no care for his life. Even without the knowledge that Jamie had lost his soulmate through time-traveling stones, who in the heck would want to live in a world in which everyone and everything they loved and fought for was destroyed? The Jacobites were so soundly defeated that there really was no hope at this point. Hope had disappeared long before Culloden. The show didn't really show it, but in the books, they had been out of provisions for a couple months. They'd already eaten the horses, except for Jamie's horse, Duras, because the prince was using him. Jamie took back Duras and placed Fergus on him to take the Deed of Sasine to Lallybroch. When Claire showed up randomly in 1948 at Craig na Dun, not only was she pregnant and wearing strange clothes, but she was showing signs of malnutrition, which led doctors and Frank to believe she had been held captive and raped and starved for 3 years and that she made up the time-traveling romance as a coping mechanism.
Claire's motivation for taking Brianna to Scotland was to reveal Jamie to her. The bit about Roger's father was just her cover story. And they were visiting distant family of Frank's in England. Both Frank and Claire were only children, so the family was like great aunts or second cousins or something. Brianna didn't figure it out in the book. Claire told her, but it was in an unplanned fit of emotion that was triggered by Claire being around all these reminders. I think in the show Claire was planning on telling her, but Brianna figured it out before Claire could figure out how to tell her. Either way, Brianna found out in a really painful, dramatic fashion when Claire probably would have preferred to be able to tell her in a calm and loving way, but that doesn't make for good drama.

I don't think there was any use in keeping a watch, because the battle/war was lost anyway. The ones able to stand were weak and tired. I think I read that some managed to run and hide, but what use is it to fight a British soldier when you are surrounded by a dozen others? And the Highlanders had one thing left, which was their pride. If it meant being executed for "the right cause", so be it.

  • @MissTeeFy
    @MissTeeFy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Re the Highlanders in the cabin, they were very weak because they'd been starving for months, they were almost all injured and they were unarmed. The English were well fed, heavily armed, and the victors. They had no chance.

I'm not sure the exact years but I know that in the fifties maybe But in the sixties and maybe some of the early seventies when a woman had a baby they put her in like a twilight sleep. My baby sisters were born in 1980 and 81 and that was just as Lamaz was starting and my dad was allowed in the delivery room for those 2.

Jamie and the men were housed in a house near the battlefield, too wounded or weak (despite Rupert’s apparent strength and energy) to get away with any speed. The British soldiers, healthy and well fed, were all around, killing the wounded and speeding after any opponents who managed to escape. The Scots were basically hunkered down, comforting each other and waiting for their inevitable capture and executions. No watch was necessary because they knew they would not make it out alive.

  • @mamaseesa3122

Bree's accent: I always thought of it as off because she grew up in America but had British parents.
There was no lookout at the cottage because they had nowhere to go without being caught; they were just waiting for soldiers to find them. They didn't try anything because while this was a small group of soilders, it was one of many nearby doing the same thing and so backup would be quick to the scene. Plus many of the Scots in the building were wounded.
I was so sad to see Rupert go, but he went out strong!
I like how they go back and forth here, it really helps you to understand why Claire raising Bree in the future was best. As the wife of Red Jamie, Claire would've been treated badly, at the very least imprisoned. Not good during pregnancy. And then if the child survived, trying to raise her during the famine that followed, possibly on the run? Also not good. In the books, the birth is rough, and there's a good chance Claire and Bree would've died without modern medicine. And yes, F that doctor. It wasn't a c-section, that's just what they did to laboring mothers back then. Knock em out so the 'poor things' didn't feel pain. Nevermind that they might want to actually see their child come into the world.
Frank. We book readers have a strong dislike, some would say hate, for this man. He's not as nice in the books.
There is PLENTY for the other seasons. Trust me. And we need to know what happened during the 20 years, because it is a LOT and of course all of it has future ramifications. Easier to see it happen rather than have a huge conversation about it between characters.
This season has so much in store for you!! Can't wait to see it through your eyes!!

Not to worry, Anna, there are a lot of interesting things that happen in those 20 years apart. It felt to me like it moved pretty quickly (then again, I binged that in a couple of days). My faves in season 3 are 4, 6 and 12. I am especially eager to see YOUR reactions to episodes 8 & 12 though! Love all of your insights and commentary!

In the last episode, Brianna said she was from Boston. I wonder if the actress is trying to do an accent. Maybe that’s why the lines seemed off if the actress is not really from there…

I find the acting a little jarring here too, it does get better though. For Brianna and Roger I think it's coming into this already well established story and needing a bit of time to grow into their characters. For Claire transitioning to a character living 20 year later and figuring out who she's become while still needing to play some parts of the much younger Claire was probably very difficult. It smooths out a lot as all the actors grow into their roles.

  • @dawnl3752
    @dawnl3752 2 ปีที่แล้ว

There was more to her going back to England, one of the reason you find out in Season five I believe? In the next episode you find out that Frank and Claire wanted to take Brianna to England to visit but then you learn there’s more to the story. Just in the show in the book there is more to the story of Clara taking Brianna to England in Scotland and in the book she was kind of on the fence telling Brianna about her dad Jamie. She really wasn’t sure if she was gonna tell her and how she was going to tell her. At least that’s how I remember it from the book. In the book the reason why Claire tells Brianna about Jamie was because Claire saw his headstones in the cemetery when they were walking through it and Claire freaked out about it.

l was laughing when you said, "You'd be mad if Jamie married Laoghaire." l've seen a lot of the fans call her leghair. lol. Everyone loves to hate her. Outlander is an emotional roller-coaster ride. l hate it when Jamie & Claire are separated. Something bad always seems to happen to them. In the 1940s/50s woman didn't have much of a choice what they did or how they were treated. Things slowly (60's\70's) started changing. What made me upset about Frank was the fact that Claire could not talk about or search for Jamie. She had to bottle up all her emotions, which as we know is not healthy. So how does he expect her to live in the future, when the past is wrapped around her like a blanket???? But he can do as he pleases. No, l'm not a Frank fan. There was something about Frank l did not like or trust. l discovered Outlander & binge-watched the first 3 seasons 2 months before season 4 began. Then l read the books, which confirmed my feelings about Frank. But l do agree with others about Frank & Brianna's relationship to each other. l'm trying not to give away to much of the story. If l have.... I apologize.

By the way, it's April 16, 1746. History cannot be changed. This is Black Jack Randall's last day on earth. Bwahahahahahaha.
Sophie's acting get better. But, yeah, she struggled this 1st season with the show.
I have a REALLY hard time finding any reason to like Frank. Sorry not sorry.
Everyone expected Claire to just "get over" Jamie. They didn't give her any time to grieve him. He was the breath in her body (Diana's words). This is one of the reasons I dislike Frank so much.
Claire stays with Frank because she believes Jamie died at Culloden and because she promised Jamie she would. And that's another point of contention. Frank HATES that she valued that promise over anything he might have said.
I'm so looking forward to watching you watch this season. It is an amazing season.

@Angelina Brown - We all have respect and a deference to Clare's point of view, but from Frank's position (in the series, if not in the books) I think as much as he can, given what he knows, can know, Frank is trying to do the right thing by Clare - and I think definitely DOES DO the best anyone could by Briana!

Even though I've read all the books I can't remember if it's same for anyone that goes through the stones but for Claire it seems to always be 200 years. Though to be fair if all she is doing is thinking about Jamie and thinking about Scotland and how much she loves him The stones will put her in the right place.

How Claire finds out is different in the book than in the TV show. Frank asked her to wait to tell her when he is dead.
Everybody's dead now? You are right. Infact at the beginning of the first episode of Season one except Claire, they are dead.....all dead.

In my recollection of the books, Claire went to Scotland to trace the lineage of the Lallybroch men to make sure they actually survived and Jamie's sacrifice wasn't in vain. She went to the reverand's house to see if he could aid her and she ran into Roger, who told her the Reverend died.
Sophie Skelton (Brianna) is British and I think she was struggling a little bit at first with the American accent. However, would someone who grew up in Boston in the 60s with two British parents actually sound fully American???? It does seem a little off, but that was how I resolved it in my head.
I also enjoyed the battle scenes. Sadly we do not see Culloden in the book at all, so it was a treat that the show paid that off for us. And now I'm going to stop before I write an entire novel in the comments section lol. Great reaction!!!

  • @TerryYelmene
    @TerryYelmene 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I've always thought somehow that I appreciated 'The Battle Joined' (TBJ) more than most... that somehow this wonderful episode was under-rated!?! Perhaps TBJ may be under-rated because it comes after Dragonfly which 90%+ of OL fans have always had... let's just say... a great fondness for - (personally, I think Df-in-A is one of the great masterpieces of episodic television, but that's me!).
But I think there is a much more visceral reason. I tend to think that while I see OL as an epic adventure, more fans see OL as an epic romance and it's this episode's launch of the long 20-year separation that strongly 'sniffles' any enthusiasm some may otherwise have for TBJ. It's often said by many: "Anytime Clare and Jamie are separated, bad things happen"... and that's demonstrably true. Well... this is THE BIG SEPARATION and their worlds and their timelines both crumble under great pressure... so, TBJ is a BIG PART of that chaos - adventure, enhanced... romance, devastated.
My other TBJ appreciation stems from this episode being exactly 'midway' into what I consider one of the greatest 10 episode runs (Prestonpans-to-A Malcom) of all-time... And, at mid-point, this episode joins the entire "end of the Scottish way of life" story to the next chapter of the OL saga (though I always maintain the bigger storyline demarkation point is Clare's story change at the end of 'First Wife.') At any rate... starting here... we have two truly 'bound-in-love' soulmates... separated by 202 years... passing... yet, passing away from each other.
Yet as good as TBJ has been for me, I came to appreciate the story even more this time around, due to the freaking FAN-tastic set of questions Anna poses midway through...
    ● "Would Jamie have put her through the stones if she din't have Frank to go back to?"
    ● "And what would she do without Frank?"
    ● "Would she have any options?"
    ● "And is it fair to Frank to keep 'wrapped' in this relationship?"
I also appreciate Anna's mention of how the 1940's men and their patriarchal mindsets were taking Clare BACKWARD from the respect she was able to earn among the men in the 1740s. This backward progression is even more jarring considering our current (in America) ever closer-to-Gillead cultural-political developments.
Where I think Anna's thinking is a bit off though... is her insistence on believing the rag-tag and injured Highlanders had any chance at all of putting-up any resistance to the English Army after the battle. Also regarding possible family in England, in the pilot episode, we understand Frank and Clare are going to meet his parents at a restaurant. when he springs an elopement on Clare. So, it's possibly Frank's relatives they may be re-connecting with in London.
Finally, Anna's cringe at those gunshot sounds signaling Rupert's execution... was as heart-felt as any... of the many... we've all seen.
However, however, however... I'll humbly add one more element... an apology to Anna... as a brilliant, inquisitive author as well as a... woman.. - right here - because, because, because... for all her great insight, I have to say... I kinda 'hate' a smart woman's intuition... I'm just sayin'... Anna's anticipatory comments about both Clare's friend's demise, OR NOT, and a possible future storyline for Jamie kinda makes me a bit annoyed As a man who rather simply falls into a story like this without thinking ahead that much... well let's just leave this at... I apologize, but... ya... still annoyed!

Just to point out they weren't fighting the English army they were fighting the British army. Most of the main characters are British, this is why they are traitors to the crown rather than enemies of the crown. They were English on the Jacobite side and Scottish protestants. To be fair on Brianna's accent, the actress is very English and so is her native accent. That mid-American is well coached but now and then the cadence is wrong. It's very much NOT Boston, though. She gets better as the show goes on. I just wish they'd found someone taller. That's significant in the book story, she was every bit a tall, sturdy repeat of her father.
Claire did have some means of her own in the modern time slot. She had a small but adequate inheritance from her parents and Uncle Lamb and of course she could have gotten work as a nurse. She could have made do without Frank. The book never tells us her reasoning for staying with him. Perhaps she was afraid of being entirely alone and knew that Frank, no matter what, would come to her assistance, so to say, which was Jamie's reasoning. He said she needed to go to a man who could help her. 1948 society didn't think well of pregnant women with no husband, however it came to be.
It was common practice in first world countries to drug women giving birth. All sorts of idiots thought modern women too emotionally delicate to well withstand labor and delivery. In reality those who thought that were too emotionally testosterone poisoned to accept that women are strong enough to do what every woman has done down through time, and not just giving birth!
I don't recall that the book gives any justification for Claire and grown Brianna go visit England/Scotland. I think Claire just wanted to go, and see, and remember. I don't think she intended to tell Bree anything, she just wanted to kiss some memories.

Knocked out the woman, pulled the baby out (and often wrecked the woman's bladder/vagina in the process). Bad times for childbirth and women in the US especially. Absolutely flawless... as a barely 20-year-old rational thinking, head-strong, American with British parents facing the most unbelievable, actually rather ridiculous, story in the context of learning very abruptly about a birth father controversy she couldn't even imagine she even had! I for one, think Sophie's performance was a miraculous triumph!

I'm glad u recognize that the actress who plays brienne is awful. No. She doesn't improve. She ruins every scene she is in until the very end.

Ironically, Black Jack dying on top of Jamie saved Jamie’s life. The book explains how his weight put pressure on that serious thigh wound and prevented Jamie bleeding to death. 🩸🗡️
