      I think that’s to prevent animals like Raccoons, possums, and cranes from swiping at the fish. That used to happen all the time in my parents’ pond

      I live over 75 miles from the ocean and had my 14 and 15"+ koi and 12"+ gold fish taken from my pond by ocean birds. Had to put a net over it. At first I thought it was the racoons or possums doing it. After watching a bird swoop down and take one the net went on. I wish I had an electric fence when a dog decided to go swimming in my pond killing one of my 24" koi breeders and two 15" males. The insurance money didn't begin to cover the cost of losing them.

    Absolutely "Love" your pond and it is a very small World after all...We not only have a fish pond, but I also have a pet goose named "George" and my wife's name is "Vicki"...We live in Northern Wisconsin and "George" is a member of our indoor family...He lives downstairs in the room I set up with (2) 180 gallon fish tanks for our pond fish to spend the Winters and all our Tropical plants and Aquatics that would never survive this climate...Our home is on a river and until last week we still had 200 Canadian Geese and 26 Trumpeter Swans, but they have headed South now that our river has frozen over...Our TH-cam channel has 40 videos of our goose "George" and his Life here in our home and yard full of North Woods Wildlife...I noticed a picture of ice on your pond...Do you bring your Koi indoors, or let them freeze ??? Sincerely, Bob at "CraZBob1" on here... 1/10/2019

    this is nive but the conformation is dangerous for your fishes!!! you have a part without plants, with the little rocks, perfect for the developpement of algees and when the temperatur rises, you haven't so much water movement ...you need to have more water mixing if you you don't want to renove all fifth year your pond. ;)

    • @StuartDWright
      @StuartDWright  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. Do you mean why *didn't* we put in a bottom drain? There's a pump and pipe going to the side of the pond and up under ground to the filters. It's located at the bottom of the deepest part so that it's easy to pull out and maintain. It does the job fine without having to do lots of digging to put in a drain and more pipework.

      I didn't see anything that could be used for filtration systems. I have 2 pumps set up for filtering the water and still have to suction the bottom at least once every two weeks plus the filters. Everyone who thinks the work is done after being built needs to be aware that the ponds need to be cleaned every week, maybe 2 at the most. The fry area will become a rotting mess and stink to high heaven if not cleaned.

    Nice Job but servicing the skimmer will be a challenge. I put one mothers pond and it is a pain to service reaching over the pond, Here is just a suggestion raise the rock level in the beach to 2 inches above the water level and put the return line off the skimmer pump under the rock at the shallow end. This will stop the algae from growing and turn the beach in to a active bog the little fish will still go in for protection, and the large stone will make it easy to thin the bog, and it will help with filtering and water clarity and algae control. when its time to thin the bog thin by 1 third.

    • @StuartDWright
      @StuartDWright  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. The skimmer sends water to a T junction under the beach for two outlet there to increase water flow. Getting the skimmer basket out is easy with a hook on a pole. Getting the pump out is more of a challenge with the short pipes, do we're having the pipes lengthened to help.

      Update: now the pipes have been lengthened, the pump is much easier to get out. Only problem now is that the holes in the Oase Aquaskim 40 basket are too large, causing debris to block up the Hozelock pump. I have to keep unblocking the impeller every few days.

    What are you doing about a filtration system and cleaning? I see the waterfall and plants for oxygen and water waste removal but didn't see anything for the bottom and ledges. I'm lucky enough to have a pond I can hand vacuum with a sump. But even with 2 filters that has to be done every week or two. I live 75 miles from the ocean and had herons or other birds taking the fish and had to devise a net cover because they weren't afraid of my owl decoy. I've been lucky enough that the racoons and possums have stayed away. Other than a dog going swimming and killing 3 koi I've been blessed with no problems these last 15 years counting 3 hurricanes and a tropical storm. Always have backup power options.

      There's a pump in the deepest part of the pond which pumps water up through a UV tube into a large Cockney Koi filtration system consisting of several large tanks. From there the water flows out to the waterfall.

    I have got a pond and is 22x 10x and I have got to rebuild it because the liner and sleepers have had it

    • @StuartDWright
      @StuartDWright  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, it was an old, swiss cheese, PVC liner that we eventually had to replace. We had always had to top the pond up regularly, but it eventually floated to the surface when all the water seeped under it. So we had no choice but to renovate.

    You haven't made a foundation for the coastal stone, how long will it lie there? Will it be possible to walk on it?

    What a beautiful pond.
    Quite often Koi ponds are void of wildlife, this has a mix of both clear water and a space for the wildlife.
    Do you get birds bathing in the waterfall?

    • @StuartDWright
      @StuartDWright  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We had ducks nest in the plants around the waterfall a year or two ago. Don't see birds bathing there, but then we wouldn't because they wouldn't when we're out by the pond.
