@@maggiewright1781 Hi Maggie, it's deep (enough!) in the middle for toads and frogs tend to use shallow water for breeding, but there would be newts, dragonflies, damselflies and of course all the creatures that need insects or any mosquito larvae, such as larger insects, birds, amphibians and bats - they certainly take care of any likely mosquitoes :) Best wishes, Joel
Haha! India has such natural beauty, we seem to have destroyed so much of ours in the UK, but hopefully people are gardening now with nature in mind rather than against it - thank you so much for your comment, appreciated :)

You and me both! Digging the foundation for my back garden extension was impossible for a mini digger. We had to constantly break up the stones with a jackhammer because the digger couldn't pull them up. It took 6 hours instead of 2. 😵
All soils are workable im a kid and i did my pond thsts 4 metter long 2 metter wide and 1.2metter deep in a soil that my dad said it is too hard to do a pond in
I work as a landscaper. Currently a week off due to a bad shoulder. Yet I am watching landscaping videos. Good sign that i love my job. And, well done with the pond!
Thank you! Sorry to hear about the shoulder, I hope the channel is proving a distraction during your "down time" - wishing you well soon, and yes we're lucky to work in this field :) Best wishes to you, Joel
Im also a landscaper - I’m laying in a hospital bed it’s 3:30am and I can’t sleep, just had a back operation and watching these videos lol. Absolutely this! There's a 3 part series on the channel, not timelapse, that shows how I made this pond and the reason for the methods used. Thanks ever so much - best wishes, Joel
I'd love to do this. We removed the one that was in our garden years ago because it attracted so many mosquitos to the garden. If we didn't get turned into a pepperoni pizza by the mosquitos I'd absolutely make one again. Edit: Also the cats kept on catching the frogs and they'd die very slowly :(
Hi Eleanor - thank you. The bats, birds, amphibians and larger insects (like dragonflies etc) will all feast on mosquitoes and their larvae. Also, re adding a pump, the native oxygenating plants, the floating leaved plants and low-nutrient subsoil used all keep the water aerated and clear :) There is a 3 part series on the channel showing in real-time how I made this pond and why the methods are used. Additionally, you might find this video helpful, it shows just a few of the many ponds created in this way, after they establish in a few weeks: th-cam.com/video/jG1w7MUhhXs/w-d-xo.html Hope this helps Eleanor, best wishes - Joel

Buy cheap land on a swamp, and dig a big gouge out of the middle, bottom-most part of your land. It will drain a lot of the swampy area into a pond-like area instead. Or wait until one of the trees in the swamp falls over, and it should look like a natural pond. Just dig it out more and you'll have a pond next to a fallen over tree's root ball. Likely already shaded because it is in a swamp with tall trees.
I live in an apartment in a city, it's all concrete around me, and yet, here I am binging this - I am transfixed by your videos, can't stop watching. Wishful thinking or living vicariously? I neither know nor care.

I buried a Rubbermaid tub in my garden, lined it with an old shower curtain, threw in some potted umbrella plants and a small pump, and lined the edges with rocks found on the property. The only maintenance I've given it is an occasional cleaning of the pump. It's in its 10th year and has outlasted a heavy plastic pond insert I bought at Lowe's! I live in North Florida.😎

@@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton yep definitely: I decided to take more of an interest in my garden so watched all the episodes of Garden Rescue for ideas, eventually swayed by your other channel, The Butterfly Brothers, to go for wild-life. I let my grass and the weeds grow last year and was amazed by how much better it looked without me doing a thing. Next step is to experiment with multiple single seating areas connected by a small path, water placed somewhere, and adding my own plants in those areas where the weeds thrived. The fun part, which I didn't realize to start with, is that I get to experiment with the garden every year.

Hi there - thank you :) Only in very dry summers and also wind can play a part in water evaporation, but that happens with any pond. You did a really good job. I am a wild life vet and ethologist in Iceland and japan, so i am of course all about recreating (in any scale) wild life habitat. I however feel much respect for you and a tad alarmed for creating a pond so close to your house. The plague of mosquitoes infestation you must have suffered the following summer, must have biblical. I have a pond near my house in Japan and although it is gorgeous, i have to endure hell every summer, although the pond is at least 30 meters away from the house. I maintain it because it is a natural pond, was there when i got the house and it houses countless wildlife, and the oldest Koi in the pond is said to be 90 years old so i would never disturb that old lady. But now i schedule my work in Iceland in Summer so i can be away from the pond. Luckily UK summers are nothing compared to Japanese ones, which are extremely hot and humid so maybe you do not have such a big mosquitoes problems.

Hey Max - thank you, it was difficult to get back to this client's pond to show it once the plants/oxygenators had established - but if it helps, there is a 3 part series on the channel about how and why I make ponds these way. There are no artificial pumps or filters, and I don't add fish to these wildlife ponds, not only because of them eating small larvae etc but the extra nutrients the natural "waste" of the fish make means that algal blooms and murky water are encouraged - I do like fish, but this is why you see such expensive pump/filtration set-ups with Koi, it's the nutrients that you're battling. Anyway, hope this helps but do check out the series on the channel and it explains more. Thanks for the kind words and support, they do make a difference - Joel

Hi there Vincent - this is Butyl rubber liner, it's strong and has a lifetime guarantee, particularly when protected with the fleece - Butyl is recommended by Greenpeace as it's made from recycled tyres and with the longevity associated it's much better than pre-formed fibreglass ponds which can crack, discolour etc and then have to be disposed of. Hello Joel, do you ever have a problem with water wicking? I've built my pond using your technique with the underlay over the buytl liner. The pond loses gallons of water a day. The underlay came up to the edge of the pond, I now think I should have tucked it down leaving 2" to 3" of buytl around the edge to prevent water wicking away into the surrounding soil through the underlay.

Would you suggest a skimmer and pump in an area that has a lot of leaf fall? I heard you suggest a cover for the leaves (in another video), however, is there a particular reason that you wouldn't use a skimmer/pump?
Hi there Octavian, apologies for the delay but I'm just trying to catch up with everyone after the Christmas break. The only downside to using skimmers/pumps can be that smaller creatures, larvae etc can end up in them and obviously be destroyed by them. I admittedly haven't looked into these in depth but the general consensus with pond owners that keep koi etc is that they do lose a lot of diving beetles and similar insects to the skimmers and find that they no longer have water boatmen, pond skaters etc. Smaller ponds will suffer from leaf cover a lot sooner than larger ponds of course so I would still recommend using a fishing net and keeping on top of the leaves once a week during autumn, at least until the leaf-fall stops. It might take a little longer but will save a lot of life and some pennies I think :) Hope this helps, best wishes - Joel

Hi Diego :) That's not a stupid question at all, very valid - the natural oxygenators do the main work but using low-nutrient subsoil in the ponds helps keep the clarity of the water and also allows planting directly into the soil, meaning no need for plastic baskets. Absolutely this! There's a 3 part series on the channel, not timelapse, that shows how I made this pond and the reason for the methods used. Thanks ever so much - best wishes, Joel
Absolutely wish I was talented enough to pull this off!
I'd love to do this. We removed the one that was in our garden years ago because it attracted so many mosquitos to the garden. If we didn't get turned into a pepperoni pizza by the mosquitos I'd absolutely make one again.
Edit: Also the cats kept on catching the frogs and they'd die very slowly :(
Quick Question -- what do you do to prevent mosquitos? Would adding a small pump to keep the water moving help?
Hi Eleanor - thank you. The bats, birds, amphibians and larger insects (like dragonflies etc) will all feast on mosquitoes and their larvae. Also, re adding a pump, the native oxygenating plants, the floating leaved plants and low-nutrient subsoil used all keep the water aerated and clear :) There is a 3 part series on the channel showing in real-time how I made this pond and why the methods are used. Additionally, you might find this video helpful, it shows just a few of the many ponds created in this way, after they establish in a few weeks:

Buy cheap land on a swamp, and dig a big gouge out of the middle, bottom-most part of your land. It will drain a lot of the swampy area into a pond-like area instead. Or wait until one of the trees in the swamp falls over, and it should look like a natural pond. Just dig it out more and you'll have a pond next to a fallen over tree's root ball. Likely already shaded because it is in a swamp with tall trees.

Hi Michelle - so sorry for the delay in responding to you - I am not sure if you have seen the 3 part instructional video on the channel for this pond - it will be a lot easier to follow :) Thank you for your support, I really appreciate it - best wishes, Joel
gud day I'm a new friend in the philipines I'm fully suport to you. keep safe my new friend 👍❤️
Hello :) I am really grateful for your support, I have just seen your channel about your fish and I have subscribed - keep the fantastic videos coming! Best wishes to you and yours - Joel
Any issue with the pond being so close to the foundation of the house?
Not at all - this isn't the house, it's the client's shed :) The instructions for this pond are on the channel - best wishes, Joel
If it was next to a house it would only be a problem if the house was built on a waffle pad.
I like nature lovers like you very much You will make the next generation nature oriented🌿🍃thank you big brother,,,,, love you from India 🇮🇳 🙏
Thanks so much Amarjit. That means a lot. I hope to inspire many people around the world about nature conservation 😊 Love from the UK 🙏👍
DIY ers of the most creative ideas... Beautiful.
Thank you Kira, I really appreciate that. I wish I had had time to film this pond when it was established after a few weeks but time didn't allow. I hope to return in late Spring to do an update on it. There is also a 3 part series on the channel of the making of this in real time :) Best wishes, Joel
Beautiful loved your pond amazing
Thank you so much - I really appreciate you taking the time to leave such a nice comment, it does make a difference :) I hope you enjoy the rest of the channel where there are instructions on how to make this pond and several other videos on how they look when established - from small to very large :) Best wishes to you - Joel

Hi there! utmost apologies for the delay in responding, I don't seem to be getting all the notifications re comments and am having to trawl the videos to ensure I'm acknowledging everyone. Thank you for your support, though, it means a lot :) Best wishes, Joel
@@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton 🙏💛🌻
It's so cool I've made it smaller thanks to the tutorial Spirit🌱🌱
That's fantastic to hear :) Not sure if you've seen the instructional videos, sounds like you have already succeeded though - well done, I'm here if you need any help Lilian - best wishes, Joel
I want to build a pond this great like you, should I put a pump in it tho?
Hi there "J" - no artificial filtration or pumps needed for these natural ponds - there is a 3 part series showing how to make this pond on the channel - I'd recommend watching them as it is easier to follow than the timelapse here - you can see also in this video a few of the ponds I've made over many years and how they establish and how important they are for nature:
th-cam.com/video/jG1w7MUhhXs/w-d-xo.html
I hope you enjoy the channel and these videos are helpful to you - the more habitat the better in my mind :) Best wishes, Joel
3:10 whats the surface layer material that you covered pond with? Thx
how do you clean it or is it cleaning itself, since it's still water.
and what is your solution for mosquito season? Drain it?
Gr8 timelapse showcase. thumbs up
Hey Max - thank you, it was difficult to get back to this client's pond to show it once the plants/oxygenators had established - but if it helps, there is a 3 part series on the channel about how and why I make ponds these way.
Love and appreciate your hard work
Prachi Singh thank you so much for leaving a comment. It’s so encouraging to hear your thoughts 😊🙏
Hi. great video. Why did you put another layer of fleece on the top of the lining?
Hi Jane. It was installed to protect the liner from stones when backfilling with soil on top 😊
I think I am blessed because I live in a country where the soil is so fertile that if you throw a small stick forget about it, it will grow into a huge tree after sometime. I love sri lanka
I love Sri Lanka too! Although I have not visited, it is on my "must" list. My partner tells me about her trip there before we met and how she wishes to return. I love how you expressed the fertility of the soil, it made me laugh :) Best wishes, Joel
In India u dont even need to dig a hole. The rain fills the clogged drains leaving my house flooded in water 🤣
This gave me an idea .. love how it came out
Thanks Richy, so much. I appreciate you leaving this comment - for some other ideas there's a short video right here that shows a few of the other ponds I've created - hope it helps :)

Enjoy the channel and take good care - best wishes, Joel
Great video/s , what liner do you recommend?
Hi there Vincent - this is Butyl rubber liner, it's strong and has a lifetime guarantee, particularly when protected with the fleece - Butyl is recommended by Greenpeace as it's made from recycled tyres and with the longevity associated it's much better than pre-formed fibreglass ponds which can crack, discolour etc and then have to be disposed of. Forgive me if you've already seen it but there's a 3 part series on the channel explaining how I made it in detail:

Thank you very much for the encouragement - means a lot!
Me too🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳
Thank you very much you for subscribing 😊👍 hope you enjoy the videos to come 😁
Hello Joel, do you ever have a problem with water wicking? I've built my pond using your technique with the underlay over the buytl liner. The pond loses gallons of water a day. The underlay came up to the edge of the pond, I now think I should have tucked it down leaving 2" to 3" of buytl around the edge to prevent water wicking away into the surrounding soil through the underlay.
Hi there - out on site at the moment - please feel free to send some photos to hazelwoodlandscapes@hotmail.com and I'll see what I can do to advise :) Best wishes, Joel
You need a capillary barrier. Dig a ditch around the pond and cover it completely with the butyl liner, then fill it with gravel and stones.
You are so talented I have been addicted to your videos
Hi Smruti - thank you so much for your kind and positive comment, it does make a difference to me :) I am really glad you enjoyed the video, welcome to the channel - you might like to see a few of the many ponds I've made this way and how they look after a few weeks when the plants grow and establish:

A pond is a must for a wildlife garden. Mine is teaming with life. I've just put a video up about the frogs and frogspawn I filmed in mine last week.
Hey Mike - thank you, so sorry for the delay in acknowledging you, just trying to catch up with everyone's comments - so glad you've made a fabulous habitat for wildlife, it sounds like you're rewarded for all your efforts :) Best wishes, Joel
@@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton Thanks for your help. Love the videos.
God Bless you and your family .. Bravo .Very nice ...Heart Touching..
Thank you so much - I really appreciate the comment Hassan.
looks great and inspired some ideas to form in my noggins! I was thinking the pond might be in the way for gardening in the back corner over there. How is the pond doing in 2022 and was that ever a issue?
Hi Justin - this was the best place for the pond in this smaller garden, they're best in the sunniest spot and away from trees - I am yet to return to this pond and film it again as I work all over the country so it's difficult to return to the same place, but I do try - you can see just a few of the many others created using this method in this short video here, which might help and give some more ideas for you :)

So, what materials is used the white stuff in the bottom?
Hi Sayuna - if you go to the channel or click on "videos" section you will see a 3 part series where I explain everything in detail :) I hope this helps, but if there are any other questions I am happy to help :) Best wishes, Joel
Wow 1 million views congrats my man that is so cool 😎
Thank you! I really hope that this has encouraged even 20% of viewers to make a habitat like this, they're so important for so much life :) Best wishes, Joel
Sorry, maybe my question will be stupid: how do you clean the water pond? I mean, and avoid the process of nitrifying?
Hi Diego :) That's not a stupid question at all, very valid - the natural oxygenators do the main work but using low-nutrient subsoil in the ponds helps keep the clarity of the water and also allows planting directly into the soil, meaning no need for plastic baskets. But it is the oxygenators that do the vital work - if you wanted to see just a few of the many ponds I have created and how they quickly establish, there is a short video here:

wow, when you first dig in it, the soils open and thats a good soil

Hi bro your work is perfect
How to solve over flow
Thank you 😊 The water naturally overflows at a slow rate into the surrounding herbaceous borders 👍

Great video, love backyard ponds!
Rookie Adventures thank you! They’re certainly great for all forms of life! 😁
Looks great!.. I want a mini pond as well but more for my water lotus plants. I'm hoping my husband will make one for me this spring lol... Thanks for sharing my friend 🌹
Thank you so much! The plants will not harm the wildlife that will need this water source so much - if your husband has time then the full instructions for this small pond can be found here - with the reasons and method for doing it this way

Does water not go under the black/white mats when the ground absorbs rain etc and lift the mats up?
No, but I can see why you are asking :) Here are the ponds once established after a few weeks - I was unable to get back to this client's pond to do an update yet, but this video shows just a few of the many ponds I've created using this method for 17 years, and how important for wildlife they are:

Appriciated. Can you please inform what are those cloth type things and propose using those?
I would just like to take a minute to say this pond is absolutely AMAZING and you did a great job on it, and i would just like to say you are very very talented!
Thank you, that means a lot to me - I know there are a lot of negative comments but I think people expect these ponds to be for fish or koi in particular, but they are for nature above all and this method has worked without fail for over 15 years now - I really appreciate you taking the time, it makes all the difference :) Best wishes to you, Joel
