    The amount of work that goes into preparing these coffins it unbelievable. They have to seal all of the lid to stop the smell seeping out after a few weeks and even months after the casket has been placed inside the tomb !

      Sealing these is not a good idea because gasses are going to build up causing caskets to blow open. Kari the Mortician has an entire video on 'exploding caskets' that talks about this very thing & some places will prop the lids open just to prevent this. I couldn't find the one I was looking for but this one also explains exploding caskets & what causes this to happen.

      Cemetery workers want to be as mobile as possible, so shorts or jogging pants are probably common (depends on the weather and the season, and also where they work - even if they now use a backhoe/excavator, you'd still want to keep a groundsperson warm while digging graves in the winter). If you wish to see a more "formal" look for cemetery workers, then cargos are the way to go. Definitely not jeans, too heavy.

  • @dianarendon4047
    @dianarendon4047 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    With all the respect, but actually, sealing the caskets are the worst idea because once death occurs, the human body naturally will start the process of decomposition, and in the process of decomposition, gases are released from the body, and if the gases build up inside without any escape, the pressure builds up and therefore the casket can EXPLODE, and there have been cases where not only the casket explodes, but also the crypt wall can also open from the explosion. I could also speculate too that the casket was sealed only for a moment for the psychological comfort of the loved ones present, but once the family leaves, the casket is unsealed, yeah because come on, it makes sense, and sealing caskets will not prevent decomposition and if left sealed, the gases from the body that can build up inside and without any sort of escape, its logical that it can explode, think of it like you were to seal a pressure cooker and putting it inside a small concrete space, so even with "sealed" caskets, it has to have some sort of air vent to let the gases leave and help relieve the pressure, so sealing a casket will defeat the purpose, and instead of "preserving" a body, it will actually do the opposite because of what I just explain. It really gets me mad that the funeral industry has turned into a business and try to prey on the families' grief to make extra $$ and going as far as lying into selling sealed caskets making the families believe it will prevent their loved ones decay...totally untrue. My best wishes to you and your loved ones.

The casket was wrapped and a tray was under it also. Edit: they also said they changed from metal dowels to wooden ones to slide the casket in the slot, because the metal ones would rust the bottom of the tray.

    Just curious, is there any particular reason for wrapping the casket?

    • @johnifly
      @johnifly 10 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      The reason a casket is wrapped in plastic (it's most likely in a bag first) is that (and I will try to be delicate here) since the body is being interred in an above-ground burial, it will be prone to FASTER decomposition. During the decomposition process, resulting fluid might be released along with the embalming fluid. That would settle on the bottom of the casket, eventually eating through the casket and if the casket wasn't wrapped or placed into a large bag, that fluid, once it ate through the casket, would leak into the crypt and cause damage and might possible flow out of the crypt and run down the front, which would not be a pleasant experience at all, along with the odor of decomposition as well. The plastic bag that the casket is in prevents that fluid from leaking into the crypt. Lawsuits were brought against cemetaries because of this fluid leaking out to the point it was visible to the surviving loved ones when they visited the crypt. Hope that answered your question. If there is proper ventilation in the crypt/mausoleum and some way to vent built-up gases in the casket, then there should be no problem. Again, I know it's a delicate subject but that's the reason why the casket it put into a bag and wrapped.

    • @johnifly
      @johnifly 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      johnifly
      I see they have the casket on a tray and that would facilitate any possible leakage from the casket. We have a local mausoleum that does the same thing.

    • @0413dec
      @0413dec 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      johnifly I see. Yeah I heard of that happening before. I've also heard that people can get a non-sealant casket, so that there is a small space between the lids and the rim of the casket, which might help with the ventilation, since it allows for the gases to vent out rather than build up inside a sealed/airtight casket. I don't know if the wrapping would be necessary then. I'm sure some mausoleums do that anyway to be on the safe side.

    • @johnifly
      @johnifly 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes, they probably do. I talked to a funeral director at the local cemetery where my parents are buried (not in a mausoleum) and I asked him specifically about that (I almost went to school to be a mortician) and he told me they put the whole casket in a large bag especially prepared to ensure no fluids leak into the crypt and damage it. They also have it well-ventilated so there are no odors. Being in a mausoleum, ESPECIALLY during the Summer will speed up decomposition and it's not pretty inside the casket from what I hear. Their body becomes a mass of putrid soup!!

    • @johnifly
      @johnifly 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's FAR BETTER to use a casket without a sealer gasket. The funeral director I'm friends with told me they have a "burper valve" built into the casket to prevent build-up of decomposition gas but still I've read stories that that didn't matter and they still had problems with "exploding casket syndrome" and fluid leakage so the reason for the bag.

      Hardly rich. Barely even blue collar. When your loved one dies, you do what you can to honor their memory.

      The casket has an air-tight seal that prevents odors from leaving and/or entering the casket. Embalmed people do not decay, though.
