Rick: The binding has gold on it, well its worthless.
This is officially the saddest thing I have ever seen.
Whoever sold this book to this man, deserves what’s coming to them.
Plot twist: old guy signed a book.
Karma is going to bite someone
Depends how much he paid for it
it's crushing but just thinking would it make a difference if you use different ink pens? Could he try to contact JR the author for the validation?
@@terryjohnson3912 karma doesn’t exist Buddy
The man who saved the book for 19 years and later get to know it's fake. Such a heart break
He should of looked into it right away lol or even 3,4,5 etc. years later if it took the lightbulb that long to think of checking in to it then….hey tough better luck next time
I don't see how he couldn't have known, the signature looked horrible and obviously fake.
@@tiddybagel Not to the untrained eye.

Lol
I'm gonna watch that again

Did anyone feel that mans heartbreak like I did??? 😟
......Rick is so sympathetic to the guy....a swift handshake....and just walks away....
Poor sod.
Yah, how he said thank you to Rick, I felt that.
He’ll find somebody online to buy it.
But he is giving it to one of great grandchildren which will give him more happiness and 10,000 in his pocket😊
aww poor guy, some one even gave him a Certificate of Authenticity for it!. The old man was so soft spoken i like him. I hope he's healthy and happy.
I kinda wanna give the guy a hug, he sounded so disappointed 😥
Bet he was going to use the money as gifts to his grandchildren
All I care about is no wedding ring....
If he didn't sound so old and grandfatherly....I'd want him arrested. The book should be confiscated.
@@jasonmichael3676 , the dealer should be arrested 1st. The old man was a victim.
@@jasonmichael3676 I agree with the reply above me.
Such a heart break! If I were J. K Rowling I would sign that old man's book myself.
I wonder if it would be worth more than a regular signed book if she scribbled out a fake signature then puts hers underneath
@@awesomeavis7861 it's still probably wouldn't be worth anything. One guy on different episode went in with a authentic signature on counterfeit special event Stan Lee Funko pops and it wasn't worth anything.
@@wraithflaire1639 that’s cause funko pops are literal garbage
But then he'd just sell it. If i were a famous writer, want to sign a book for a person that would treasure and keep it
@@awesomeavis7861 just because of the background story I believe people would be interested in collecting it, if JKR would sign it just to make the old man's day. It would give the signature more value than regular signature from signing session.
Just in case anyone was unaware of who Harry Potter was. Thanks Rick
Rick will always be the greatest teacher of the most obvious.
It was kind of painful listening to him explain my childhood.
*Rick: "pizza is delicious". Thanks Bruh.*
I've heard the name before but I've never seen any of the movies.
rick also explains the simpsons...
I’ve never felt bad for anyone on pawn stars until I saw this...
I sooo wanted to see this guy get a boatload of money.
Me too☹️☹️☹️
he would give everything to his grandkids. I am sure of it
Rick would have offered him like 2k if it was worth 10k lol
Thing would have been worth like $200. They are common.
Well it was never worth 10k but it was sad to see him get nothing
My wife has this exact printing (a 1st edition as well), signed by Rowling (verified real signature), but with an optional acetate dust jacket offered by the publisher on the first weekend the book was on sale. Many people didn't get the dust jacket because it was an extra 10 pounds. We bought it at a book shop in Philadelphia in 2016. It's definitely one of her prized possessions.
You paid an extra “10pounds,” in Philadelphia.???
@@dexterboyz4023 WTF? No, that's how much extra the dust jacket cost originally. The First Edition was EXCLUSIVE to the UK, and the only way to get it in the USA was on the 2nd hand market as a collectible. Which is what we did, at a shop in Philadelphia.
Good call on getting the dust jacket.
@@dexterboyz4023 There is a Philadelphia in England as well.
This exact printing is a deluxe edition and not a true first impression though. 1999 vs 1997

How does she know, maybe JK Rowling did sign it and had a hangover that day.
maybe tired from signing books too
It's not so much about her knowing it is a forgery; when you have to authenticate a signature, all that is important is whether or not you can do that: In this case, she cannot authenticate the signature, which doesn't always mean a forgery, the chances of that are just too high to purchase it.
You can clearly compare it to the signature on the front of the book....nothing similar
Correct, even my signature differs when i need to put it down 20 times
@@libadjoembie6373 Yes, but you generally will use some kind of pattern. Just depends on how exaggerated it is.

All these years I thought this book was about a hairy potter. Thanks for clearing that up Rick.
I got a hairy Potter for you. Like to authenticate it .
She says it's a 1999 deluxe edition, not a first edition
Her copy is a 1999 Deluxe Edition, signed.
Every time the book is republished in a different format a new first edition is generated. There was a first edition published of the original book, but when they published a deluxe edition there would be a first edition of that deluxe edition too. The true first edition would always be most desirable for most collectors, but the deluxe first edition is collectable in its own right
@@dzonbrodi514 Yes, but this was printed in such huge numbers and for a market already expecting it to grow in value and by that time she was signing these books like crazy. Even with the real signature this is not worth much.
@@petrmaly9087 yeah collectable doesn't mean valuable, or scarce, or even rare; it just means people will want it. And they will, in good condition, with the actual author's signature. Even if it's only worth $50 or $100, that's a lot more than most books are worth.
@@dzonbrodi514 Sure, but in that case it is better for a used books store specialising in this and not a pawn store.
These "experts" are not as clued up as they think they are.
I worked as a manager in the factory that produced the Harry Potter books. I remember the first run on the presses and Joanne Rowling attended on the day the first books were produced and she and the publisher took a few.
The first true copy from the machine goes into the factory archives as a "pass copy" to verify the quality of the binding and print. In this instance JK Rowling actually signed the book herself (even though it was just the department manager normally did this). The book was stamped with the date and time, the department manager signature, a little line of text saying "first good copy" and was filed away in protective sleeves in our archive room.
Anyhow, a friend of mine acquired the book when the factory were clearing out the archives, he later tried to get it authenticated and nobody would authenticate the signature, because it was signed "Joanne Rowling" and different to how she is know to sign her name.
The last I saw the book was 4 or 5 years ago and was still immaculate. He is due to retire next year and will put the book for the first time to public auction along with all the provenance he has, it will surely make the news when it does sell as it was history in the making.
Poor guy ,I feel bad for him. Whoever did this to this man will get whatever is coming to them rest assured.
When she was writing the 1st book, she sat in a coffee house scribbling away....... the staff there used to HATE it when she came in - - - - her nickname was "one cup Jane", pretty much sums up how much she spent in there

Plot Twist: Rebecca brought the fake and did a switcheroo when they weren't looking.
Lot of people came into the store quick from 0:50 to 1:00 LOL
He always asks how much they want before he calls the expert so he can tell them how much to under value it

It always annoyed me how happy Rick seems whenever his “buddies”tell him that its not worth as much as the seller was asking for.
