    Great video. For what it's worth, I've found that a twist-tie works better than rubber band since it is less sticky and will slip off easier without getting bound up.

    • @Fishingreminder
      @Fishingreminder  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That’s also good idea. We use a thin rubber band just in case something goes wrong in the air, it can instantly come off from the drone. For example line stuck on a drift wood or birds flying through or so.

    • @Fishingreminder

      Thanks man. Lifting capacity, GPS return to home, (arguably a camera) and a few spare batteries are essential. The phantom 3 has it all but it's starting to get a bit outdated. Still a good option because it's very cheap second hand. Possibly the best option is a second hand DJI Mavic Air or a dedicated fishing drone like the Condor drone that we reviewed in one of our recent videos.

    could you just use a magnet just strong enough to hold the lure ?

    • @Fishingreminder
      @Fishingreminder  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think a strong enough magnet would interfere with the drone's compass and other electronics. It would be better to use a tension release system. Could be as simple as a downrigger clip attached to your drone and then the line will pull free on its own when you close the bail arm on your reel.

  • @jimsomerville3924
    @jimsomerville3924 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thank you! As you get out there, I assume the line in the middle starts dragging on the water, correct? If so, you just have to have a drone with enough power to overcome that drag? I guess smaller diameter and lighter braid would be better.

    • @Fishingreminder
      @Fishingreminder  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hi Jim, the line shouldn't drag through the water. Keep a little tension on the reel with very light drag ( I use a baitrunner reel for that ) so that the line stays above the water but is still easy enough for the drone to pull off the reel. If the line hits the water there is a risk it gets stuck on some drift wood or gets pulled under by a wave. Also fly the drone high enough so that line stays out of the water.

  • @AndrewVSmith10
    @AndrewVSmith10 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @Fishingreminder
      @Fishingreminder  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, those electronic releases are pretty fragile and don't last long. I've been using this simple release hook for over two years now and I never looked back. It's so much easier to use and never breaks :)

  • @ScubaChris
    @ScubaChris 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Is there an inexpensive powerful drone that i can use for dropping my baits off from shore for fishing? Say around 100m? I'm looking for a unit where i can just us the controllers built in screen instead of a cell phone. And no time consuming calibration like twirling it around. Just looking for a inexpensive no camera unit where i can just turn it on, then send it out visually to my spot that i can see 80-100m off from me, then have it return. A simple to use powerful unit. The Bayangtoys x16 so far is the closest, then the UpAir One. I'm using 3oz lead w/a bait maybe 3/4oz.

    • @Fishingreminder
      @Fishingreminder  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've been looking into inexpensive drones but there are a few problems. First you need a drone with a GPS and return to home function in case you loose the signal. Second you need to be able to buy a few extra batteries for your drone to extend your fishing time. Third the drone needs to have enough power and lifting capacity to drag out your line. That's why most cheap drones aren't really suitable. There is a cheaper Chinese drone - I think it's called an X8pro with GPS and reasonable lifting power - but getting spare batteries could be difficult. I think a used older Phantom 2 or 3 is still a much better choice.

    • @Fishingreminder
      @Fishingreminder  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah it's pretty good for fishing. It's got good lifting power and it's not expensive to get second hand these days. I get about 4 casts per battery. So 2-3 batteries is enough for a good session. You'd get a better distance with the phantom 4 but I find the half mile range of the p3 is enough for surf fishing.

      @@Fishingreminder how far out do you take your bait? 1,2,3 baits?

    • @Fishingreminder

      @@timorum I usually use a dropper rig with 2 or sometimes 3 baited hooks. I find salted mussels work really good as bait (check out my other video on salted mussels). The distance depends on the beach. On some beaches shorter casts are enough to get the bait just behind the first breakers. On shallow beaches I might take them out 400 meters/1300 feet

  • @bushmanphotos
    @bushmanphotos 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    the problem with this when I tried it is that if there is a bit of wind then when you fly backwards the drone tips into the wind which pushes the plastic connector up and the line can't come off. I spent a whole afternoon testing and not once would it slip off even with the reel locked solid. I almost lost my drone in the ocean several times because of this. It only works with hardly and wind and the drone staying almost dead flat.

    • @Fishingreminder
      @Fishingreminder  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there, to overcome this problem I would first make the forward hook shorter, it doesn't need to be very long. And if you use a rubber band then it's better not to hang the rubber band directly over the hook as this makes it harder to slip off. These days I use a paperclip. The paper clip is attached to the rubber band and then you hang the paper clip over the release hook. The paper clip will slide off very easily, even in wind.

    • @Fishingreminder
      @Fishingreminder  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      also, make sure you use a very thin rubber band and make sure it breaks easily to prevent losing your drone. In our next video, we will show exactly how we do it these days and how we make a rubber band that breaks easily.
